I feel I have to warn other parents about our experience at the UC Berkeley School of Optometry's…read morepediatric clinic. We were referred there after our two‑year‑old had an abnormal result during a routine eye screening. At first, things seemed caring -- the staff was polite -- but we had problems almost immediately. The first optometrist told us she was in the "normal range," but mentioned someone else would need to check her results. A second doctor reviewed the tests, said the same thing (normal), and again insisted another review was necessary. (The first two doctors were in residency) Then a third doctor entered and delivered a completely different diagnosis: claiming our daughter was "extremely" far‑sighted, that one eye was much weaker than the other, and recommended she be given glasses immediately and wear them all day, every day. We followed that advice, bought two pairs of glasses the next day, and endured a painful adjustment process--tears, frustration, confusion. Within one week, her left eye began dramatically turning inward (crossing) while she was wearing the glasses, a change that reversed when they were removed. This was clearly alarming, especially because this had not been a problem before the glasses. I called the clinic to alert them to the problem. Every time, I was told I couldn't speak directly to the doctor -- only through office staff, who would pass messages along. The response relayed to me was that we should continue using the glasses despite the obvious adverse effect. I insisted on alternatives or reassessment, but instead was told the earliest available appointment was months away and that the glasses must stay on. Only after much pressure did the doctor agree to see our daughter in a few weeks, but I couldn't wait that long and demanded that she give me a call. Despite describing the situation and our concern, the doctor stood by her original prescription and told us to keep the glasses on even if it was causing a crossed eye. I told her I wouldn't do that and would seek another opinion. I was forced to trust my instincts and seek a second opinion from a pediatric ophthalmologist. That doctor determined our daughter's vision was well within normal range for her age, and that she did not need glasses. Worse, she confirmed the glasses were causing the eye‑turn. She was astonished the UC Berkeley clinic would allow us to continue the glasses in the face of visible harm. To be on the safe side she scheduled a follow up appointment in six months to ensure our daughter's eyes were not worsening. At a follow‑up, the ophthalmologist declared that our daughter's vision is now better than average, her eye alignment is perfect, and she won't even need to be seen again for three years! Meanwhile, we spent hundreds of dollars, endured relentless stress, and had our child's eye health put at risk by a clinic that persisted with a potentially harmful treatment when there was clear evidence it was making things worse. I strongly advise parents to steer clear of the pediatric optometry department at UC Berkeley, especially for infants and toddlers. If your child's eyes are in doubt, find a qualified pediatric ophthalmologist instead -- someone who will listen to you, follow the evidence, and prioritize your child's safety.

It is 3 vs. 0 stars as the ophthalmologists are…read moreexcellent however it is an excellent example of how significant the impact can be on healthcare when the BUSINESS end of such is a disaster AND when the PERSONAL ISSUES OF such individuals continue to go unaddressed. *Calls go unreturned * Messaging system which is so poorly managed calls get routed back to same extensions in a loop * Persistent rudeness (as other reviewers have noted) likely due to the horrendous management * Persistent use of cheap and non-standard IT products and services * Persistent use of standard email to communicate with patients vs. standard encrypted systems designed specifically for healthcare centered businesses re adherence to HIPPA regulations Whoever manages this clinic needs to find something else to do in life and executive management needs to DO THE JOB OF FIRING that manager(s). TIME IS UP for these individuals to change. The general attitude of 'as many patients as possible' vs. 'as many patients as CAN BE SERVED PROPERLY' will eventually, if this has not already occurred, result in either a lawsuit so big it will ruin this business altogether OR actual deaths (which is likely the same thing). This is not just the usual and customary too many patients and too few people to handle them. This is a combo of people with personal control issue problems micromanaging stuff such that the stuff cannot get done at all to management that is more focused on $ than purpose AND the denial of problems that might be at least minimized by simply FIRING the micromanaging ...management. Reality is it costs $ to run a clinic. You either spend the $ to do so properly or get the hell out of the business of healthcare. The only thing positive now about this clinic are the ophthalmologists which, were it not for them, this patient would have totally dumped this place overboard a long time ago but likely will now be doing exactly that since access to these superior ophthalmologists becomes moot given they have become inaccessible due to epic mis and dismanagement. Sadly, would not recommend anyone use this clinic now (2025). Nope. The less than stellar reviews here are accurate.

We came last week and they asked for a referral that was on us to get versus them contacting her doctor. What a frustrating experience. We rescheduled and I called first to see if they received the referral. They said no and I called the primary doctor who said they did but would do it again. Thankfully they got it. We arrived at the scheduled time with two patients in front of us. It's at least 45 minutes waiting. It's a very busy office that serves quite a lot of Asians which is comforting for mom. Parking is a nightmare so give yourself plenty of time otherwise there is a garage a block away. The garage is pricey.

Today, after a short visit (checking eye pressure), I headed to the grocery store with a very specific list of items that I'd been forgetting. But, when I got to the store, I didn't have the list that I was positive I had put in my pocket. My mind went blank and I couldn't remember more than a single item on the list. Low and behold, I received a VM telling me that my list must have fallen from my pocket, as it was on the chair I'd vacated. I quickly called back and asked if the nice receptionist could possibly send a screenshot of my list so I wouldn't have to drive back to get it. She was more than happy to!!! I'm a VERY happy client (patient) due to how personable and capable the entire staff always is, but now I have reason to sing their praises for going "the extra mile"! Thank you!!!

They were true two primary issues with Michael Wang's ophthalmology practice…read more The first one is that the communication with the office was terrible. They do not respond to messages in the MyChart system, despite asking you to use the MyChart system to communicate with them. They do not respond to text messages, despite not answering their phone and having a voicemail that asks you to text them. I have sent over six messages across those two systems and not received a single response. Second, the office in Lafayette looks like a barren movie set. There is absolutely nothing on the walls, and it appears to be some sort of temporary space. The chairs you sit in are rickety and mismatched. The furniture looks like it's something from a thrift sale. So strange. In the end, I had to leave the practice because I was not able to get my prescriptions renewed by virtue of never being able to reach their office. The care quality was quite poor.
