The office is on the 2nd floor and if they are not open, the elevators will not allow you to stop there. Our appt was at 10am, but we did not get to check-in until 10:30am. Waiting room area is by the elevators. There is a big STOP sign upon entering the office. It is a small space and you can only enter when you are called. One front desk secretary that does everything. I do appreciate the time the doctor took to thoroughly examine my mom's eyes. He is very old school - he has shelves filled with many different size lens. Our appt did not felt rush and his secretary was very nice and patient with helping us choose a frame that was covered by insurance. The doctor does not speak Cantonese fluently - just enough words to get by but his secretary does so if you need an interpreter, she is there. read more

What stood out the most to us was his refusal to prescribe her contact lenses. I'm a loyal patron here because quite frankly mom and dad refuse to go anywhere else. And now that I'm grown enough to make my own ophthalmic decisions, I still opt to come here. There's just something sentimental about going to an eye doc who knows your history. I'm not just another number on a queue. Dr. Hoh makes sure you know your options and goes the extra mile to make sure you're leaving with prescription that's most comfortable for you. When he found out I was wearing my contacts way longer than I should.. rather than scold me (yeah I've head health professionals SCOLD me despite being a grown azz woman) he took the time to figure out why I wasn't switching over to my glasses (cause under the same prescription I don't feel like I see as clearly) and upped my glasses script +50 to compensate. He also makes note of my interests and milestones (idk in my file or his brain) and always checked up on me about my studies/aspirations. Plus right there for being hella human. Annie is also great! I've seen her help patients make the tough decision between two frames they loved equally (or so they thought). Also very friendly over the phone and helping me deal with insurance. WHY is this page not for Dr. Hoh but for some Chinatown Optometrist? Anyhoo...I got my first pair of spectacles there 12 years ago! I left for a few years as I had moved away but came back because of their vast selection of frames and designer sunglasses, too! They know my family because we've given them so much business over the years. It was a quick routine checkup today. Would have been an even shorter visit had we not gotten off topic and talked about men for a little while...haha. I don't like the glaucoma test with the puff of air directed at each eye. The alternative test is available. Your eyes are numbed and some kind of pressure gauge is used to press on the eyeball a few times. Somehow, that seems a lot less scary. You won't flinch so much. Very inexplicable to me. We have opposing views on eyeglasses and the dependency it causes. I was really dependent on them (ie very blurry vision) especially when I drive many years ago. My eyes got progressively worse, up to 150 per eye. Then, I started these eye exercises and opted to train my eyes to not need them without feeling uncomfortable. These days, I can see the smaller print I couldn't before. Now, I'm down to 75 each eye, same prescription as when I was 20 -- stable for the past 2-3 years. He even says I can possibly pass the DMV vision test. read more

I've been coming here since I was 10, now 16, and I've never had a bad experience. (I'm 18 now, and everything in this review outside these parenthesis is a draft of a review I was going to post two years ago but forgot to, but I still stand by it all.) You can opt out of the air pressure measurement process of getting air blown into your eye for the eye drops instead by asking. When you pick out your frame, they'll try their best to help you find a frame of your style. I just picked out a new frame last week in two years and they remembered I like bigger frames. The doctor is very friendly and appointments are more than just an exchange of services. He asks about how school is like and gives advice about college, just an overall friendly place to get your eye needs taken care of. read more

Dr. Hoh is a really nice guy. He spent a good deal of time examining my eyes and talking to me about my progressive glasses, answering any questions I had and even explaining how health can impact vision. He was thorough and patient. I told him I wanted something very comfortable at monitor distance. I like progressives for every day wearing but I decided to get a specific work pair. I found a pair I liked and they did not cost very much. There is a wide selection but I'm sure you could just get your prescription and have the glasses made elsewhere if you don't like what they have. If you care about your eyes then Dr Hoh is a good eye doc for you. I want to get contact lenses soon and I'll for sure go back to Dr. Ho. read more

Dr Hoh is a true professional. He's just really good at his job. I scheduled my appointment for the same day, and got it. Came in around my appointment window and I was done in 30mins. Even spent a few minutes picking out my new specs. If I had 1 word to describe my experience it'd be efficient. Dr Hoh makes sure I know my options, my exam was thorough, he was very direct in explaining the level of differences I should be seeing between changes so I'm not sitting there like an idiot saying "looks about the same" on every option. So when I got my new prescription it felt right. Been wearing glasses for nearly 20 years, contacts for 14 years now. I took my Ray Ban shades there to get prescription lens on. They charged me about $130 or so for polarized lens, it wasn't a bad price for polarized lenses, I thought. They took a week to get done. I was happy with the time and the people there were really nice. I'd definitely go back. read more

HANDS DOWN, BEST OPTOMETRIST I'VE MET! I have been coming to see Dr. Hoh for more than 10 years!? I have lots of family here in the bay area but I actually live in Los Angeles. I've been to a few in LA and man, they do not compare to Dr. Hoh at all! So whenever I travel to the Bay Area I make it a point to see Dr. Hoh to get my eyes checked! Dr. Hoh is really attentive when it comes to my eyes and informs me everything he's going to do so I don't freak out if something weird comes up. He's also super patient, friendly and he takes the time to explain everything to me. The staff is super nice too! I don't see why everyone complains about the staff. Whenever I walk in, they smile at me and ask if I need any help each time! They carry a wide range of frames as well! I recently picked out a pair of Valentino's and they were able to get them to me with my prescription within hours so I wouldn't miss my flight back to LA!!! I have Kaiser insurance and thus have used Kaiser optometrists since I moved to the Bay area 5 years ago. My experiences have been fine, but certainly unmemorable. When I lost my glasses this week, I figured I would make a quick appointment with a Kaiser optometrist and get my glasses in a few days. Wrong. The first available afternoon appointment was in THREE weeks! With the 7-10 day waiting period for glasses, that's over a month WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO SEE. I checked Yelp and looked for an optometrist who could do an exam on a Saturday afternoon without breaking the bank. Prices ranged from $49 (Dr. Hoh) to almost 200 (!). I decided to give Dr. Hoh a chance because he was the most cost efficient and was able to give me an appointment right away. Now, I HATE spending money when I don't have to, but I found myself glad to spend the $49 to be examined by Dr. Hoh. He is extremely knowledgeable, kind, funny and explains things in incredible detail. I have long suspected that an astigmatism has been the cause of poor night vision, and Dr. Hoh was able to confirm my suspicion using thorough, objective analysis. His explanation could not have been any more forthright. I really enjoyed my experience with Dr. Hoh and also found his office staff to be professional and courteous. read more

You know when you show up one of these establishments, you'd think you'd get greeted and somehow they would acknowledge you and then point you to the seating area. Don't expect it here. When we showed up 20 minutes early, the receptionist could care less that we were there. She didn't acknowledge us and continued dialing patients to confirm appointments rather than set the phone down and address us face to face. After a brief nod (while she was on a phone call) we were pointed into the seating area. No, hello, how are you doing, the doctor will be with you shortly. Dr. Hoh is friendly and knowledgeable. I didn't find a wide assortment of trendy frames like I was hoping, but by then my attitude had soured so much it didn't make sense for me to stick around any longer. As Oaklanders my wife and I try to support our independent local business, so after googleling several local optometrist Dr. Hoh's was the most well highlighted with great reviews, immediately she called in and made an appointment towards an eye exam and most likely to purchase glasses. Yes, Dr. Hoh may be an awesome optometrist with great character, sharp at his profession and all, the site is pretty clean modern and legit, but what's NOT legit is the fact that they attempted to sell my wife the display Gucci frames. She went in and chose a $380 Gucci fames, within 4 day she got called in to pick up her glasses, my wife noticed the arms were a bit loose and also scratches here and there, plus there was no box/case to go along, so we tried finding the display model and they were no longer on the display panel. (fIShY) She ended up denying the frames and demanded they get them re-done on a brand new set. You guys be careful. read more

Dr. Hoh is a gem. The reception is very personable, accommodating and informative. I think one of the two women hasn't really mastered English, which sometimes may get lost in translation as rude. I get it because some of my relatives sound "not so sweet" with their "Engrish", but in actually really are nice people :P. The woman who helped me was awesome. Anyway...If you want to have a doctor that is patient, communicates the exam steps, someone who is willing to answer all questions with genuine concern, and someone who is thorough and extremely skilled, Dr. Hoh is the man. Dr. Hoh was the first optometrist I went to. I got my first pair of glasses ever from his office in 2003. Over the years I went to other optometrists because of my parents then I moved away for college. This year I moved back to Oakland so I had to find a local optometrist. I searched on Yelp and decided to go back to Dr. Hoh. He is definitely the best optometrist out of all I've been to, I should have stuck with him! I really appreciate how Dr. Hoh explains everything he is doing and he takes his time answering questions I have. The staff are really nice and helpful. I particularly like the lady who wears glasses and has the longer hair, she gives good frame suggestions. Prices are standard. The turnover time is ok. I've had glasses ready within a few days and another took over 2 weeks. One thing I wish they have is a larger selection of frames. Called them around 11AM asking if they give me a confirmation on my power, BC, and diameter. It's 3PM, had to call again to remind them. I understand offices get busy but FOUR hours later? I usually read Yelp's reviews, but I never joined until now because I felt that I should leave a review for Dr. Hoh's office. I have never had a problem with my vision, but lately I have been experiencing slight problems seeing far away. So, I decided to go in for an eye exam. Since I am totally new and do not have a regular optometrist, I looked up local optometry offices. I actually found this one called EBVC. Their address was already complicated to find as it was. I went in on a Sat and it was so crowded and the service there was not very friendly. I decided not to schedule an appt. My mother recommended me hers, which was right across the street, and luckily I was able to see the doctor right then and there. The office was clean, calm, and the people that work there were extremely friendly and knew what they were talking about. 5 stars for Dr. Hoh because he made my first experience a great one. He gave me great consultation and explained to me what was going on with my vision. Reception lady... Almost on par with the chubby lady in my dental review (CT Dental). This lady, boy... She responds so quickly. Good, right? Nope. Her responses make you feel retarded. It makes you feel like beating her up. She called a patient to tell them that it was their appointment date. The patient asks if she could go today. Reception--"I just told you that you could come in today. I wouldn't call you if it wasn't your appointment, blah blah. You get it. Basically she gets gets the last word, and you feel like shit. If you want to ruin your morning, go here. If you want to get a pair of glasses, it's the best place to go. Just be prepared to get burned by this lady. Why the one star even though the optometrist here is high-tier? It's from the reception, --minus four stars from her attitude. You know why? She was talking to my mom in that manner. Never do that.
