The Rock Store is a great place to stop and biker-watch on a Sunday. The food here is just so-so; omelet and hash browns on a paper plate - hey, it does the job! Because it's in Malibu, it's overrated, but still fun. If you continue on Mulholland, there's sports photographers at the curve taking pictures of all the bikers and you can find your pic online. Bikers show off doing wheelies up and down one stretch of the road, so be really careful! It's dangerous up in them there parts! If you're lucky, you'll run into Jay Leno here! read more

Went here after a ride up Mulholland and I have to be honest it was OK. I had the Chilli omelette and it was good, but $12 for that and a water and it was just average. Stopped by this place during our ride today. It's a nice place for bikers. Saw some pretty nice bikes here. I didn't try the food so I can't tell you about that. The bar outside however is nice. There are a lot of seats outside by the bar but for some reason this place was very busy today and we had to wait a bit for a table to clear up. The staff was very friendly. The prices were very fair as well. It you are riding don't park your bike Infront of the restaurant. Other customers will block you in and then good luck finding that biker that blocked you in. read more

I have ridden by several times but hadn't stopped until a couple of weeks ago. Was riding with a buddy who wanted to stop for breakfast. I was impressed so I rode there with my wife today. She loved it. The food is decent and fairly reasonable (for breakfast at least) but the ambiance is what makes this place special. If you ride, it is a must visit. Probably one of the most famous motorcycle destination stops on the West coast. Seeing some of the bikes in the parking lot is worth a trip. It is like a motorcycle and car show every weekend. It does get a little crowded but it is worth stopping to check out the scene. We will start making this one of our regular stops. read more

I've been riding my bike here since the early 70's. Even back then it was a biker hangout on weekends but most especially on Sundays. Now days it still is but a whole lot bigger. You'll see every kind of bike here on a Sunday. From choppers, to dressers, to crotch rockets, to enduros, mopeds and even rocket propelled bikes that Jay Leno sometimes rides here on. The canyons here are my favorite. While I no longer drag my knees through the turns as I use to, I still enjoy cruising on them. Please be careful and stay well inside your lane when riding here because it is a race track on Sundays and as such you'll see other riders often times drifting outside their lanes and coming right at you at a high rate of speed. Also keep an eye behind you as you'll have others trying to pass you. I advice you stay out of their way, and let them by. Unless of course you're racing in which case they'd have to work their way past me. Bottom line is I highly recommend any biker to visit this place at least once in their life. Definitely something that should be on your bucket list. read more

Where do you go? The Rock Store. It's a great place to stop, rest and grab something to eat or drink. It's VERY biker friendly and you'll see all different types of bikes parked out front. THE rock store Heard about this place for years, see it in posters, movies, etc. Never been there until last Sunday. 3 cars, 300 motorcycles (give or take). Most of the patrons are over 40, maybe even over 50. The leathers are new and the bikes were spotless. It's a cool place for this type of eye-candy. Got the everything omelette with some jalapenos. Unfortunately it was a bit bland - had to doctor it up with some ketchup and Tapatio. My friend got the eggs & bacon. Looked very doable. I heard that the tri-tip is good too... So after years of driving within 100 yards of it and not knowing it. I finally got to see and experience it. It won't be my last, but I will be trying a different meal though. read more

Once in a while I have a day that reminds me of how much I absolutely love living in LA. Today was one of those days and that's why the Rock Store gets five stars - because today was damn near perfect. So my boyfriend (can't really call him the new boy anymore) is really into sport bikes. Before I met him I never would have even considered getting on the back of a bike - and it did take me four months to get on the back of his. But now, I'm totally hooked. We did 150 miles this morning thru the canyons in Malibu - taking every twist and turn together and enjoying the nice mellow straightaways. Honestly, it was relaxing and the scenery was beautiful. About an hour after leaving the house we arrived at the Rock Store and a had pretty substantial appetite worked up by that point. I hadn't even coffee before we left the house. So we got to the Rock Store, found our friends and had a great breakfast that filled me up for the rest of the trip. Nothing fancy - but still, really good and the girls working there were totally friendly and kept the coffee coming. It was fun standing outside with all the boys talking about bikes and checking out the pretty Harleys. Perfect weather and blue skies only helped to compliment the day. I was waiting to write #200 till I had something special to write about and today seemed like the perfect thing. And the fact that my ass is so sore now from 6 hours on the bike is even worth it. I've been going to the Rock Store for decades. I used to sit behind my step dad on his crappy honda, then his Harley and now I ride up on one of my two bikes. Like others who have commented, it's a bit of wierd atmosphere. There is and always will be a kind of tension between the Harleys and "rice burners". I've found as a person of the "rice burner" persuasion, Harley riders are highly sensitive to fear. Kill 'em with kindness, I say. In fact, I find that the squids are often much more annoying and rude than anyone else. Riding up to the Rock Store is like a right of passage for the motorcycle rider. I remember the first time I rode there on my first bike. I had this little BMW 650 Scarver and it was kind of raining. Being a woman and all...people just kind of stop and watch you. You have this fear that you're going to drop your bike or run over some hairy Hells Angel. It's all good though. The thing about the RS is the ride. We riders in LA are so damned lucky. It's like God's Country out here. Sometimes I sneak off for a quick ride and a Corona. Better than any pharmaceutical you can take. People still gawk when I pull in. Now it's the bike people are looking at and I guess the fact that a girl is on it. A little attention never hurt anybody. hehe. read more

What can be said about the legendary Rock Store? Previously a gas station and diner along Mulholland Highway, back when Model A Fords were the norm, this iconic bar and grille is now a landmark and a Mecca for SoCal bikers. It features tons of dining space, both inside and outside, including old school restaurant booths and large tables upstairs for bigger groups, as well as a breakfast/lunch counter. The facility itself is way old and has been built upon and added onto a few times over the years. The large parking lot is well maintained and very bike & dog friendly. Likewise the patio area is a great place to dine among the oaks, sycamores and pines. The restrooms unfortunately are rarely clean, too small and severely dated. Also it is not well equipped for the handicapped. The restrooms are upstairs with no ramps to get there. The food at this greasy spoon is nothing special. I don't come here as often as I used to, but everything tends to be overcooked. The coffee however is excellent and consistent and they will keep filling that bottomless cup as long as you carry it around with you. The staff are just as iconic as the restaurant! I've always had excellent service here from Rosie and the girls. The servers are extremely friendly, helpful and will remember you by name. However, if you arrive during the rush, be patient... By rush, I mean you can literally see hundreds of bikers here. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Rock Store are the customers. If you spend enough time on the patio from opening until the afternoon, you can observe practically every microcosm of motorcycling culture come and go. From the Breakfast Boys early in the morning, who are retirees on high-mileage Gold Wings and BMW's looking for any excuse to ride, share fantastic tales of the good old days and swap political commentary & jokes. They may decide to ride to Tonopah that day, or they may go home to take a nap... To the cafe racers on beautifully restored or modified older British, Italian, German and Japanese bikes reminiscing about the good old days, which they are too young to have experienced. Like Marlon Brando, James Dean or Steve McQueen, they carve out their own niche. Next come the Power Rangers dressed in brightly emblazoned 1-piece leather suits, hockey pucks and $600 signature helmets preparing to bomb the mountains and hone their racing skills on public streets, much to the dismay of local residents and law enforcement. Following are the squids, who are young, dumb and full of an immortality complex. Showing up with a helmet, shorts, tank top and little else, they'll get nabbed by the numerous CHP and LA County Sheriffs after they practice their wheelies, stoppies and crash once or twice. Later, the pirates show up - essentially HOG club members and Sons Of Anarchy wannabes on their new, fully-financed Harleys, complete with doo rags, sleeveless shirts and fresh tribal or barbed wire ink. They'll compare their latest chrome purchases, act tough and squint a lot, but are relatively harmless. Go Wild Hogs! You will also see the occasional celebrity here. Jay Leno is a regular and I've also seen others like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert Blake and more. And of course, interspersed in all of this are the car enthusiasts and cyclists who stop in for a bite and a drink. Finally as the sun starts falling, the old-school regulars show up on shovels, pans & rat bikes to salute the evening, enjoy themselves and find reasons for just one more drink. I went there on Friday afternoon for lunch with my siblings who are huge biker enthusiasts. They were so excited about going here that now I feel so bad I took them. In a nutshell: bad food and bad service. Basically you get over-cooked, greasy, rubbery crap served on paper plates. We ordered iced teas, which came in plastic red cups, and had a heck of a time trying to get refills from our waitress. Turns out she was too busy helping to set up for a personal party to actually serve paying costumers (we were the only paying customers in the place. Everyone else was there to help set up for the personal party or they were regulars who came in everyday to shoot the breeze). The party to which I am referring was for the owner's birthday. Which, wonderful, happy birthday and all, but we paying customers could have been shown an ounce of courtesy and maybe a little mustard and more iced tea when asked. After lunch one of my siblings went upstairs to the "store" to get a souvenir (even though we were having a bad experience, he still wanted a memento from the famous Rock Store). Absolutely NO ONE offered to help him in any way. He stood around the shop waiting to purchase a patch, but he was ignored. He could have just walked out of the store with the patch, but he was so upset from being ignored, he didn't even want to steal the damn thing! My favorite book as a kid growing up was "Mouse and the Motorcycle" by Beverly Cleary. I don't remember too many details of the plot, but the one detail that stands out in my mind was that Ralph S. Mouse (that's his name, I swear) wore half of a ping pong ball for a helmet. Why that cracks me up to this day, I don't know - it just does. I'd like to think the Rock Store is a place where Ralph would be at home. One might think a place like this would cater to the cruiser crowd, but I saw more Hondas than Harleys on that warm Sunday afternoon. Great place to see all types of motorcycles and riders. The best thing about the Rock Store is not actually the place itself, but the roads that you need to take to get there. It's prime location nestled in the hills overlooking Malibu takes you on some of the best twisities in LA County. My favorite turn you ask? Let me save myself a little bit of time and simply refer you to my review of Cold Spring Tavern. To all you reviewers who give a place like this more than three stars, how may beers did you have? It just cracks me up when you guys rate establishments because of the mood that you seem to be in when you arrive. So you have a blast riding your motorcycle through the canyons to the Rock Store, and that makes it 5-star? Let me guess, you also gave five stars to Mother's Tavern, The Rock Inn, Cook's Corner, and Hell's Kitchen (actually, the latter is quite good). As far as biker destinations go, this is not even one of the best. Granted, it's fun to sit on the patio and have a beer, but who stays there long enough to enjoy it as a 5-star establishment? I hope you all exercise better judgment while you're riding. Start making sense and after a beer and a piss ride down to the bottom of the hill one way or the other and go to Pikey's for a burger, Sagebrush Cantina for tacos, or Neptune's Net for some chowder. So that you don't think that I overlooked all that is good about The Rock Store, I will note that the cook who sings a bit of opera has a pretty good voice. Sing on chef! read more

For a scenic bike destination in the Los Angeles area this is about as cool as it gets. In the mind of a biker you will get your "Happy Ending" once there. The ride to the Rock Store is the best part. A lot of fun twisty roads and mountain like scenery through the canyons. There are a lot of cool little roads to explore on the way. I usually get onto the route off of Ventura Blvd and take the old Mullholland Highway to enjoy the ride and view. You can also go the other way from PCH but the old highway is really cool. As usual there are your typical Sport Bike riders in a support group and your typical Harley only riders that also have their support group. I myself have had all kinds of bikes and I just enjoy two wheels verses 4. For the most part everyone is pretty cool and just enjoying motorcycles and the joys of riding. You will always get one of those stubborn "My brand of bike is better" morons, but I watched these guys breakdown when it was 112 degrees out and I rode right on by on my 72 year old BMW motorcycle...giggle..hilarious The patio is fun to eat at and have a few drinks, Usually you always end up rubbing shoulders with someone. The last time I was there Carmen Electra was there meoww..She is hot even with little makeup! You never know who will be there. There is seating inside but I did enjoy the patio and all the characters that would roll up on their bikes. The food is great, the staff rocks, and the ride there as well as back is awesome! You can take any of the roads from the Rock Store and drop down to PCH. From there you can head north a few miles and hit another cool spot for cheap seafood called "Neptune's Net". Honestly, I was a bit disappointed in this place. The ride up was great - PCH, Mulholland... when I heard about this place I definately wanted to check it out. Then I heard celebrities frequent this place as well. A much more of a bonus if we saw any. Upon arrival, we got checked out by all the bikers in the parking lot - most of them were sport bikes and non-Harleys, while we rode up on our Harley's. Reminded me of a back-woodsy hole in the wall place... as with most biker bars. Anyway, as we got eyeballed all the way in we decided to eat an early dinner. Not much choice on the menu - tri tip burger, chicken burger, hamburger all around $10. Soda and water were $2/ bottle/ can. Not very friendly atmosphere at all. There was outdoor seating so we sat outside but bees kept flying all around us... one of my friends is deathly afraid of them and they followed her everywhere. Needless to say, we didn't stay very long. Just ate and left. Troutdale road is real close and it lets you cut over to 101 so it was a quick ride home. Not sure if I'll return. For now, once is enough although the roads were real scenic. read more

So I've now seen Jay Leno up there and Im lowering this by 2 stars. There are wayyy too many deaushbags riding this road, and therefore way too many cops. Last time I went up there I got a total bullshit speed trap ticket. I could do 61 in first gear, 61 in 4th should not be considered speeding. The restaurant itself kinda sucks. The service is slow at best, the food is alright at best, the menu is halfway to shitty at best, and the general crowd that inhabits this place can all but eat a dick. Mostly a poser weekend cycle group with their shiny new bikes and matching leathers. Looked more like a new motorcycle dealership than a diverse mix of experienced riders having a nice afternoon pit-stop. Food is way overpriced.. $4.95 for one biscuit split in half and a little gravy on a plate! Service was good though.. Very nice people there.. Since it is widely on the net now, it is just a "marketing gimmick", not a true local pit stop. Hence the T-Shirts and name dropping of celebs (you may see)... Typical LA hype... Go to Ralph's in Malibu, you can see plenty celebs for free if that is your bag! Also, it is very dangerous now, as the new idiot sport bike kids drive way too fast in the canyons, cutting off cars (and other bikers) and passing on double yellow lines.. Three cheers for the CHP! My Sunday home... The Rock Store is the real deal, and here's the deal... Ed and Vern bought this place, and have spent a TON of money, out of their own pocket, to protect motorcycles and motorcyclists rights in the area. This place is a true showplace of motorcycling history, and is pretty much the centerpiece of the best motorcycling roads in the state. That being said a few things about the place and the surrounding roads There are different times of the day that cater to different crowds... Early AM or on Saturday - The more hard core and the celeb crowd. Less cops, less crowds, less trouble. Almost no HD powered machines out, guess its still too early for beer Sunday after 930 - Pretty diverse, about 50/50 sportbikes and hd stuff.. lots of breakfast being had, and good times. Sunday after noon - The sport bikes have all gone home, and the HD and squid crowd tends to show up. You can tell this because the noise increases as each and every Harley guy revs the hell out of his bike leaving, making about 35hp. (please watch southpark's "F-Word" episode, it might clue you in" I don't get the idiots who insist on trying to play Lance on the tour while they are out wobbling around and stomping squares, while trying to climb to the look out in the middle of the lane, going 2mph at 40ppm. Yeah, that was me that chopped you off, sorry about that, next time, stay in the bike lane, or better yet, go find one! You aren't riding well, you don't belong in the road, and if you cant stay straight and not weave from side to side, you need a lesser incline to attack there skippy! Look really cute in your spandex tho... The supposed tension between the HD and sportbike crowd is a self created newbie thing, most of the regulars converse freely with everyone, or no one, but by and large, when you roll up, it really doesn't matter who you are, or what you are doing, you are just a guy on a bike. The food is well... food, and just a part of the environment, but the drinks are cold, the people are warm and friendly, and the fact that it is an icon in American motorcycling makes it about the best weekend stop around. As a newbie rider doing the "snake" for the first time with the beast of a Vulcan 2000 I must say there were scary moments for me. Its a 30-35 mile ride from Santa Monica one way, winding roads, twists, turns, up the mountain, down the mountain etc. The Rock store is something to experience not just see in pics for you will miss the brute noise of dozens of bikes with screaming exhausts, the cigarette and cigar smoke all wafting while you are stuffing yourself with sausage, eggs, hashbrowns, coffee ..lol. The menu is extensive and has beer and wine too. The restaurant has a breakfast menu before 12:30pm and a lunch menu after that. Riding the snaky road with its sharp twists and switchblade turns demands your respect and admiration not to mention improving your riding skills. I just recently returned to the Rock Store and am reminded how strange it can be. I've been here a dozen times but never ate. There's something just a little bit intimidating about the depth of two wheel culture here. That guy right there is the head mechanic of BMW of Hollywood. That guy right there builds customs. That vaguely Euro guy over there is wearing designer leathers. This place just defies small talk and casual conversation. It's in no way unfriendly, but damn I feel I'm in over my head. Honestly, they really gave me no choice but to give them one star - they never gave us service so we never got to order and never got to eat! My husband and I have spent a couple hours up at The Snake and decided to finally try The Rock Store for lunch. We walked up to the outside bar and asked if we should just seat ourselves and were told that yes we should and the waitress would be with us soon. So we found a table and waited... and waited.. and waited. After about 15 minutes, my husband went back to the bar to at least get some drinks. They were busy but not packed. We waited another 20 minutes while enjoying our cold drinks and then we just got up and left. During the whole time we were there, we saw the waitress once, and she noticed us as she walked by so we thought okay, she had finally seen us and she surely would come back to take our order, but nope. Seriously? No service at all! We weren't dressed in biker duds, so was this a case of we just didn't belong so we weren't worthy of service? Guess we will never know because we certainly won't be going back. read more

Descent food, standard beer list, awesome setting. Some friends took me there Sunday. Good breakfast menu w all the standards. BBQ was available beginning at noon. I had a couple beers, tri tip sandwich, and checked out some dope motorcycles. It's set a bit far back in the hills. So, not practical for a non-biker like to to visit frequently. GSX-R600s. Ducati 1098s. They're the tools of the trade. Now a days exhibition of Ferrari's, Lamborghini's maserati's, who has the best bike or riding gear, leather suits or maybe looking at a tall man Vanson racing suit, paying cash for a bottle of Dasani before wading into the alphabet soup of sport bikes parked on the pavement outside the door. All in all, simply who's who place and the trend goes on. Many bicyclists come to this place who also enjoy this area if I don't run them over. Also, there is this dude taking pictures from each rider and charges $20 -30 per shot.. LOL.. The food stayed the same over these years. Summer times, I ride very early to beat the heat. After having breakfast, I move on to the beautiful canyon roads. Winter time, rain or shine I still ride to Rock Store different times depends on the weather and temperature. Overall riding to Rock Store is my first choice after Angeles Crest Highway and HWY 154/ stagecoach road Cold Springs Tavern. Rock Store is okay "hello" place to stop and rest. read more

Ok gotta say this place is way to over hyped. Husband and I took a motorcycle ride up here with some friends. I've always wanted to ride there so we did. Got there and the service was not that great. I ordered a root beer and got a diet root beer brought to me instead. There were bees ALL OVER! Tables, seats, trees, on the drinks on the food etc. got the tri tip plate and it was extremely messy to eat. Sure the ride up there is great but save your money and grab a drink and some food from somewhere else. read more
