This space is so welcoming and I always have a great time when there. I just recently started rock climbing and have only been a handful of times but the vibe is so easygoing and helpful that it was not scary at ALL! I am very disappointed with my first time experience at this location. I signed my two sons up for their first rock climbing experience during their toddler time hours. Well let's just say the experience they had was to only view the outside of the building as nobody came to open up the building at 8am. It's not the easiest to get a family up with young children and travel 30 minutes to only be let down. There were 7 other families with young children (all first timers as well) in which we all had to then turn around and now tell our children we weren't going to rock climb after all the hype. Maybe don't make a family pay for this experience in advance if they are only to be let down. Figure it out! read more

We recently discovered this place because our three-year old daughter loves to climb. Once a month they offer a toddler time, which we have been attending for a couple months. Incredibly expensive... It was accessible to lower-income families and individuals at around $30 a month. Now a monthly membership is almost $100. Its clear rock spot caters to only affluent clientele, such as students with mom and dad's cards. It doesn't seem like the gym is struggling, given new locations popping up. Considering the community that these gyms are located in, it certainly doesn't serve these communities. It's deplorable because the climbing community has always been an inclusive one. read more

After my initial review, a representative from Rockspot reached out to me and offered to reinstate the passes that we had initially purchased. I wasn't feeling enthused about returning after our last trip, but rather than being stubborn for the sake of being stubborn, I figured (after much encouragement) that we could make the most of what we'd already spent and use up the passes we had left. We ended up using one of our day passes with a belay lesson ($15 for just the lesson) to allow us to open up more of the gym to climb. For me, it'd been quite a while since I belayed and my friend had never done it before so it made the most sense for us. Our instructor, San, was so unbelievably patient and kind with us that the singular experience restored my faith in Rock Spot. Not sure when he works (we came during the weekend), but if you're able to get a lesson with him- definitely opt for it. After completing the class, they offer a special introductory 1 month membership w/gear rental for only $25 (+ two guest passes)-- which we both decided to go for. Since then/my last review, we've gone back at least once a week and it's been a great time. My experiences with the staff has been good aside from the previous experience-- super nice and friendly. If it's your first time they'll give you an introduction to the gym and a walkthrough of the bouldering walls and autobelay devices, of which there are quite a few. The people who climb here consistently are also really pleasant-- definitely a sense of community especially for those bouldering consistently. Not rare to see a group observing and supporting each other as people try difficult problems. Also have yoga upstairs on occasion. Good for a fun evening with friends and family friendly. Some of my previous criticisms still stand, which prevent me from giving five stars. The space can be quite crowded at times-- I find that the peak times, understandably, are the hours immediately following work- 5pm-8pm or so during the weekdays where it gets to a bit overwhelming. During this time, there's also sometimes the adult climbing league which brings in quite a few groups to climb. Come after 8pm, ideally 9pm, if you want to climb more peacefully. Rentals remain pretty worn, though every so often, I'll luck out with a newer pair of shoes. All in all, I'm happy to write an updated review of Rock Spot because of the quality of the belay lesson, the friendliness of the staff, and the general chill atmosphere of the climbing gym. read more

We came in search of something to do with the kiddo on a cold rainy day in RI. And yes, for all you locals, 50 degrees is COLD to my southern Louisiana bones! The website stated again and again that they cater to all ages and experience levels, but even so -- I was intimidated at the thought of even going in the place. I've never done this before, my kid is only four, we really didn't have appropriate clothing since we were on a little vacation of sorts. The GPS in the rental car didn't get quite far enough down the road, but after some driving and a turnaround after passing up the hard-to-spot driveway, we pulled into the rather full parking lot. I told intimidation to take a hike and in we went, in all our jeans-and-thermal-shirts glory. And man, am I ever glad we did. The staff was super friendly; I never once felt like I was being judged or looked down upon while they were explaining our options. They had plenty of tiny-tiny gear for the littles, and were very patient in trying to find a pair of shoes that fit me as well. The day pass fand gear rental was $15 for the kiddo and $24 for me. We also paid $20 to have a staff member show us the ropes (pun not intended, but definitely welcomed, haha) for an hour, which was definitely worth the money for someone who has absolutely zero clue. Our guy (ugh, no name, I'm horrible with this stuff!) was really patient, explained everything to us thoroughly, and didn't even get irritated with the kiddo and his love of just letting go of the wall halfway up. It's fun, you know? *laughing* There were plenty of courses (is that what they're even called) for beginners, although a few of the places were a little far apart for my little guy. I did overhear them telling a staff member while setting up another course (?!?) to make sure it would be good for kids as well, so at least it's something they're conscious of. There were plenty of kids in there (though definitely older than mine), which was surprising and awesome all at the same time. The whole place seemed really open and welcoming and just.... not pretentious, I guess, even though there were obviously some pretty serious climbers in there. And the best part? We had a BLAST. This stuff is way easier than it looks, and with some good coaching (and cheerleading!) from our guy (*headdesk*), my kiddo made it all the way to the top of one of the courses. He got an awesome confidence boost, and so did his momma. My only regret is that we didn't find this place sooner! read more

Been climbing here for about a year. Priced about the same as other gyms in the area, and has a good number of autobelays for solo climbing. I would say they grade a little hard, but hey, that's forcing me to go a little harder. The space is smaller than other gyms I've been to, but it feels like thats been considered in the way it's set up, so there are a good number of routes. Because of my work hours, I'm nearly always there at the same time of kids classes or team practices, but there's enough room for everyone. This has been my first summer here, though, and be aware that summer camps for kids run just about every day during the summer, so sections will be blocked off for the kids. Staff seems great, and in particular, pretty good with kids. read more

I went there on Sunday morning with my wife and my son (3.5yr old). The stuff were very friendly and patiently gave us a guide. We are all beginners and used to climb just in Lincoln YMCA, where there are only one easy climb and lot of children wait in a line. We were happy to see there were a lot of auto belays, and most of all, lots of beginner climb routes. Usually a route is mix with different difficulties, differentiated with colors of hold. My son can climb on several holds too and he liked bouldering. My wife and I don't have regular exercise but we were able to climb to top on 3-4 beginner routes. Obviously we used too much of our hands so our hand tired up easily. Even though the place got busy but it was quite easy to find a beginner route to climb. Also there were lots of good climber there so I can watch them climb and learn. We had a great time there and will definitely come back. read more

I went there last week with a few friends of mine after a BBQ. Guess the beer and hamburgers left us with plenty of energy, so what better way to burn off the extra calories. Finding the place took a bit of effort. The turn-in was well hidden with a very small sign to point the way. We had to make a couple of u-turns before we finally found the "drive-in" that led to the main parking lot. Upon entering, we were greeted by a very friendly staff behind the desk (don't remember her name, curly hair, glasses). She was nice enough to give us a quick run-down on the gym and the available amenities. She was also nice enough to offer a lot of advice when we were trying on shoes in their extensive pro shop, and even let us demo them on the walls for a little while, which was very nice and rare compare to some other climbing gyms with pro shops I've been to. After the check-in however, sorry to say, is where it all went downhill. We first warmed up on some boulder routes, which were literally all over the place. I couldn't make heads and tails on some of the problems, and the grading system was not consistent. I was falling off of V0s, but then I'd flash a V3 (which rarely happens) afterwards. A lot of the routes were also very very reachy. And for heaven sakes, they need to clean their holds every once in a while! They did have a decent campus training area upstairs, with different size and degrees of campus boards, from tiny shallow rungs to slopy holds made with piping and sandpaper (clever). If you're in the area and you have the need to climb something indoors, it's a decent place to stop by. But with it so close to Lincoln Woods, I rather go there - the rocks get cleaned more than the Rock Spot's. read more

This place is a wee bit smaller than the one in South Kingstown, but customer service is just as great. We went there on a Friday night, and the place was packed. There was a kids birthday party (how awesome to have a birthday party at a rock climbing gym!), and it was the last night to renew a livingsocial (which is what brought us there as well). Despite the crowd, we still got plenty of attention and instruction from the staff. There are fewer beginner walls with auto belays than at the other location, and since there were so many kids, we had to wait a bit, but it honestly wasn't a problem. One other big difference between this gym and the SK location is that this place only has really, really high walls. They go all the way up, which for me, was a bit terrifying. Perhaps that makes this place more suited to the hardcore climbers, but I also found that once I forced myself to go all the way up (and stop looking down) I could totally handle it. So that was a moment of badassery I had not previously had. The facility was clean ad well organized (though I couldn't find the ladies room). I imagine on a less busy night, it's quite comfortable in there. Even with the herds of people, we still had fun, and it's kind of nice to see so many folks getting exercise on a Friday. Tried this place out with a Living Social deal on a Thursday night - I was super impressed with the customer service. Everyone on staff that night was very helpful, accommodating, and attentive. They had a decent section for bouldering, which I didn't attempt, but it looked accessible to beginners to the much more elite. I used the auto-belays, and was happy to see so many different stations that I could use. I found the routes to be MUCH, much more challenging than Carabiner's in New Bedford, but maybe it's because I was trying to challenge myself more this time? Not really sure. All I know is I spider-womaned my way around that place until my forearms just completely gave way! Love that they have a bathroom and showers you can use - it made the transition from climbing to cocktails quite seamless, and as a side note, my harness was super comfortable, as were my rental shoes. I can see why people fall in love with rock climbing ---I'll definitely be back. read more

Came here for a few 3 hour workouts after working in the area on a Tuesday and Thursday. There are quite a few things I like about this rock gym: - Walls are pretty high at about 30/35 feet maybe? - There are LOTS of auto-belay stations with routes ranging mostly from 5.6 to 5.10. Basically worked on the 5.9 and 5.10 routes, after the forearms gave out switched to banging out the 5.7 and 5.8 routes. - The gym is open until Midnight! - Front desk workers are really nice. - Pretty comprehensive store onsite to get you started and climing. - Lots of room to sit around, put on gear, stash gear away, etc upstairs. The following items I did not like so much: - Not much for bouldering, this is definitely a gym for top roping. - Did not see anyone lead climbing the times I was at the gym. I asked for drag rope and apparently they dont give you that here. - You need to bring your own ATC/GriGri and biners. At least they let you use GriGri here. - Not sure if there is additional parking out back, but I can image issues on weekends if all I saw was the parking that exists. Not sure on membership rates or associated fees, but definitely worth it for day pass if you bring your own gear. I will definitely return when working in the area, especially since I dont have to worry about there being enough people (and friendly ones that is) to belay me. read more

I'm kind of a wimp. But this place made me feel like a rock star. Literally. It's almost intimidating to see so many lines, and the little kids flying up them. But there were plenty of beginner level runs to balance the expert upside-down contortionists. The staff was very helpful. Our beginner lesson instructor was enthusiastic and made us feel completely at ease with trusting our lives in a roll of twine. Everyone in the place was courteous and friendly and it really was a laid back experience. Enough levels of difficulty as well as a bouldering section to keep even the most extreme climbers entertained in winter months. As an alternate for going to the gym I would rate it very highly. If I had kids, this is where I would take them to expend their post-Halloween sugar energy. read more

Great place according to this n00b. The instructors are very patient and know how to teach well. A great environment to safely get over a fear of heights. :) Seems like there's a little bit of everything for every level of climber. There's a mini rock climbing store inside the place which is very convenient versus going to a big place like EMS or REI and hope to Flying Spaghetti Monster there's someone who knows something about rock climbing equipment on shift. read more

Although indoors, Rock Spot is definitely one of the better places that I've visited. Depending on which day you visit, Rock Spot offers a selection of auto-belay stations, a decent selection of bouldering, and your normal rock climb stations. The shop itself is also quite encompassing, although it happen to have every size of shoe except for size #43, which happened to be my shoe of choice. Now, I'm not a crazy rock climber, but the staff are very friendly and helpful, and ultimately convinced me to get me to buy a 3-month membership with a pair of climbing shoes and harness. If you end up getting the membership, you can save up to 20% for a purchase of $150 or more, which is a pair of shoes and harness. Furthermore, you can invite new members to climb with you for free, once a week, so pretty newbie friendly. Overall, I enjoyed my time and hope to get better throughout the year. read more

I've been here four or five times and have been to a few other places as well so I do have a little bit to compare it to. I'm 100% a beginner and usually can't remember the knot-tying things with the carabiner and harness things. I don't even know the name of the most of the equipment, in case you can't tell. There are auto-belay walls as well as the "walls where someone else has to belay you" (technical term). It's fun and a good workout and seems to caters to different ability levels but it definitely caters to beginners if that's a concern. The staff is very friendly and their belaying instruction classes are helpful and straightforward (whether any of the material is retained is an entirely different story). There is a shop there too with all sorts of equipment if you need it. Also, it's near Lincoln Woods which is another really nice place to go if you want to hike or ride bikes or just go for a walk and have a picnic. read more

My first impression of this gym was that it was incredibly small. I thought I'd be done with trying new bouldering routes after about 15 minutes. The size is a bit deceiving, however, as the routes are placed very well. There are a lot more than you'd expect given the size. The membership price also reflects the size of the gym. For 55$ a month, it's definitely one of the cheaper rock climbing gym memberships I've seen. You also get access to the other Rock Spot locations for this price, unless you visit them more than this location, which is fair. Like the Boston gym, they have graded the bouldering based on voting. There are three grades to each routes and people are welcome to vote on what they think the difficulty should be. This is a really fun aspect, and I enjoyed debating with myself as I tried routes what their "real" grade was. Other than that the gym is pretty standard, but still small. It's definitely the smallest climbing gym I've been to, but at least they reflect that in the price! read more

It is great for all ages , they have walls for beginners and more advanced people ! The staff is very friendly and they always make sure you are safe ! So, this place is pretty cool. I'm no expert rock climber. Heck, I'm barely an intermediate rock climber. I'm pretty terrified of heights. But I love this place. Come to find out I really like rock climbing, despite my fear and weak upper-body strength. Perhaps it has to do with the staff and the climbers. The staff's helpful positive attitude and passion for rock climbing consistently makes my experiences here an enjoyable one. Even though I'm a bit of a rookie, everyone including the more advanced climbers are pretty friendly and are willing to give you any advice on what rock to grab or what have you. They have several marked pathways for different levels. They have a few smaller areas by the entrance for bouldering. And cubbies next to the entrance to place all your belongings. They have two options for climbing: auto-belaying or partner belaying. I recommend partnering up, it's a great for communication building. Plus, it's also a great cheat tool to rest on your way up. Especially if you are trying to advance yourself to more challenging climbs. They also give you a pretty good run down of how to belay safely. Pay attention and communicate with your partner! I can't tell you how many times I got pinched by the rope. The pricing is pretty reasonable. And great discounted deals/nights for families, ladies, students, military/rescue services! read more

I had a lot of fun here. I went for the first time this past weekend with 2 friends. I found the staff friendly, and the facility pretty nice over all. Plenty of snacks available and it looks like they'll host your next birthday party, team builder, etc. Since then I've already gone back once, and enjoyed some simply solitary climbs, just me and my headphones. Basically, if you'd enjoy a challenging work out (beginners to advanced) in groups or solo, give it a try. My only critique is the bathroom. It wish it was a little cleaner. read more

I just came from having a birthday party there for a group of 11 year olds. All of the girls had a great time. My daughter said it was amazing. The staff was very helpful and accommodating for both the kids trying rock climbing and also for me as the party host.. I was pleased when I booked the party that they had a wide range of times available. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the two-hour time for the party was all for the rock climbing and that they would then give us a half an hour upstairs for cake and pizza. We even had enough time to open gifts. It didn't feel rushed at all like so many other kids birthday parties can be. I highly recommend rock spot if you're looking for an activity for tweens and teens. read more

Staff was very friendly and helpful but not a gym for serious climbers. Location is terrible. In a really ghetto area with nothing else around. Hard to find. Rental shoes are such a low quality they are completely useless for anything but an absolute first time climber. Also did not like that they do not have lockers available only cubbies so make sure to leave your valuables locked in the car. read more

This gym is much better suited for leading than Rock Spot's other location. The walls are higher and they have a few long, traversing climbs to help work on endurance. It was not crowded when I was there and my partner and I were the only ones in the lead section which was nice. The route-setting was pretty awesome as well. I hopped on a short .9 to warm up and was amazed at how thoughtful and pumpy it was for a short climb. I think the grades are sandbagged for a gym but much more true to outdoor grading. On the downside, the gym is small and a bit dirty. There were also two routes that I was completely shut down by due to lack of height (I know it happens but two reach problems in one night seems like a lot compared to other gyms) read more

Great place, great people, great exercise! I got into indoor rock climbing a few months ago and am still loving it. The Rhode Island Rock Gym is a great place for any level climber. It has a beginner wall and then a few different marked climbs for each level after that. The prices are pretty reasonable and the staff is very helpful and friendly. They have a few vending machines in the upstairs lounge/changing area, which come in handy, and offer classes on belay and climbing at almost anytime of day. They also have a few auto-belay routes if you want to climb but don't have a partner that day. I would definitely suggest checking it out for anyone who enjoys a challenging and fun activity! read more

Went rock climbing for the first time ever and I had a blast! Overall the gym was clean and everything seemed pretty well maintained. They had vending machines upstairs for drinks and snacks. The other people climbing were all very considerate of each others space, even when climbing close together. There were a lot of areas for first timers like myself. I expected everything to be too difficult when I walked in, but there was something for every level which was nice. The best part of the experience was one of the employees. We were given an "orientation" by Josh, who was absolutely amazing! He was very knowledgeable about all things climbing and showed us how to properly use the equipment. My friend that brought me had been to the gym previously and said that the person who gave her an orientation could have cared less and had more of a " just don't hang yourself" attitude. Josh was really patient and answered all of my questions - even ones about memberships and purchasing gear. He shared his personal experiences and advice instead of just making a sales pitch which was appreciated. He showed me which gear I could purchase that would be best for me and what I wanted to do - I guess different shoes are used for different types of climbing, something I learned from him. I didn't have any extra money on me at the time, but I will be back in the next week or two to get a membership and buy the gear he suggested. I highly recommend coming here, whether it's a fun night out with friends or you are looking to get an awesome workout (I'm still feeling it!). I also recommend finding out when Josh is working, especially if you are a first timer. He has so much passion that he wants to pass on that it makes the experience that much better! read more

I have only been here once and it was only my second time rock climbing in my life. I went with 2 friends and we had a good time. we used the auto-belay systems, which were pretty cool. It is nice not to have to have someone stand at the bottom and belay for you. The staff were helpful and nice and I plan to go again soon! read more

This is a nice climbing gym! I've been here twice and enjoyed it both times. The staff are really nice and there's a good variety of bouldering, top roping, and leading. Good for beginners and intermediate climbers. Their hardest routes are 5.12's. Two little annoyances: they make you anchor to the floor when they belay no matter the size of you and your climbing partner because they don't wrap their ropes at the top. Also, yesterday, there was a kids party going on while we were there so there were kids swinging on ropes right behind us while we were climbing. I was afraid I was going to get hit while I was belaying, and also couldn't anchor to the floor because I couldn't back up that far or I'd be in the kids' way. One extraordinary thing about this gym is their auto belays. There are enough auto belay routes with enough variety that I could come here by myself to rope climb and be completely happy. Their auto belays also don't let you down as fast as most do, which I like. The price is good too! $14 for a day pass with a student ID. Much cheaper than some of the gyms in the Boston area! read more

Although this is the only rock climbing place I have been I thoroughly enjoy it. I have been over a dozen times and I remember my first time I was a little nervous. The staff there makes you feel welcome and they have a thorough tutorial with you to make sure that you feel comfortable before you begin. I used to only go if I had a friend to go with but now I am fine going on my own as I realized that no one judges you there, they are all so willing to help. I have tried walls that are more challenging and every time there is another climber willing to give you advice and what works for them. It is amazing how people are just excited for you to try and want to see you succeed. They are consistently on groupon so I tend to stock up when groupon has one of their 20% off sales. This is a great change up to your regular workout to challenge yourself if you want or to just try something new. read more

This place is fine for families or kids who want to have birthday parties, but it's not great if you are an intermediate/advanced climber. My main complaint is that there are way too many auto belays. If you are a beginner and you want a belay lesson it is $25--way too expensive for something that is very easy to teach. I came with someone that was new and he didn't want to pay for the lesson (understandably) so I was stuck with the auto belays. They let you down really quickly if you miss a hold and so you have to start the problem all over again. There were a few positives to this gym though--one is that they have some nice wall features. I also thought their route grading was good-a little on the harder side which I like. Not sure if I will go back unless I have someone who already knows how to belay. read more

I've been to this place a handful full of times in the past and ended up getting a 2 month membership when they had one of there monthly specials going on. I'd like to become a full member but I can't wrap my head around how much they charge for an adult years membership. An Adult 1 year is $500 ($620w/gear), and if you choose EFT option, its $39/month plus $10 gear rental. Unless I'm not seeing something, but what is the justification behind the high price for this type of gym? Is it because its more a niche sport around here? It has walls (bouldering included), one exercise bike, cubby holes for lockers, no locker room, and a couple small bathrooms and that's pretty much it. Don't get me wrong, the walls are challenging and the routes also get changed frequently. Moreover, the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable, plus very helpful if you need any questions answered. But, when it comes down to monthly/yearly adult membership fees, I feel it is way overpriced for what you get. If you were to compare this to LA Fitness, which charges 29 a month plus 99 initiation fees, that includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi, basketball courts, state of the art equipment, big locker rooms, showers, sauna, and a juice bar. Also, if compared to Carabiners, (judging by website only), the facility itself looks to offer a lot more for your money. New fitness facility and many different types of classes offered. It this place offered monthly memberships in the $20-25 range or yearly for $250, I would probably join, but not at the price they have now. Overall......the climbing is fun and challenging, great staff and the clientele seems to be a positive group of people from what I seen. read more
