Relatively clean facility with multiple recreational areas however staff can be rather temperamental and classes mediocre. Our interest in swim lessons prompted our visit to this YMCA; however, we were met with a rather rude, unwelcoming aquatics director who either did not answer our questions or brushed them off in a pompous manner. The aquatics classes left much to be desired -- The lessons taught relative to the skills required for progression to subsequent swim levels are out of sync and give an impression of a haphazard teaching schedule; this, combined with discrepant records on any given student's enrolled class -- computer records stating one thing, teachers apparently thinking they're teaching another thing, and enrollment staff trying to decipher the entanglement -- is more than disconcerting, especially given the importance of properly synchronizing teaching skills to the degree of risk associated with interacting amidst a water environment. Suffice to say that since our initial introduction -- and after having subsequently participated in various activities at this YMCA -- deficiencies in the aquatics program and a deceptively subtle yet ever-persistent "chip on the shoulder" demeanor by the aquatics director -- a caucasian male fellow, standing about 6 feet tall, and sometimes donning a ponytail hair style -- has prompted us to look elsewhere for a more suitable, hospitable YMCA (Sad to express that at one time this same fellow went so far as to glare at us and, of all things, twirl around a stick while we respectfully picked up some chips that we accidentally spilled on the lobby floor). What once appeared to be a large, clean, well-equipped facility eventually revealed outweighing character flaws. read more

This review is for the YMCA's Camp Ok-Wa-Nessett. This is/was my daughters 3rd year at this camp. Previous experiences were fine, as she was a prescooler/kindergartner. But this year was VERY different and I will NEVER send her here again. She was outside 95% of the day. Was not allowed to go to the bathroom unless more than one camper needed to ho or it was their designated bathroom time. She would go swimming but staff woukd not allow them to change out of swimsuits. They were told to put their clothes on....my daughter ended up with a yeast injection due to damp clothing and the humidity.(not to mention days later the lake was closed due to high bacteria!) One day they forgot to feed my daughter her paid lunch. I was upset and complained---They made up for it by giving her 2 lunches the next day. When i expressed my concerns a camp counselor laughter. Not funny! They constantly lost her bugspray and sun screen and send notes demanding I send some in. It was impossible to find your child in the dust bowl after standing in a check out line for 20 minutes. Camp counselors are high schoolers/young adults who do not care about your child. My daughter was always filthy, thirsty, upset--beffed me not to take her here again. Never again! read more

Really nice pool, looks clean and updated. I prefer this pool because there's more of a shallow end in each lane which is conducive to water walking and exercises. I haven't tried the fitness center yet but it looks very clean with good machines. Staff are really nice and helpful. Only thing I'd like to see change are the hours...it's very difficult to get to the lap swim times during the week because it's really only early mornings or before 4pm. That's tough for someone working full time. Same with the water aerobics classes - only two are being offered at 9 & 10 am on Tuesday's. So right now I don't feel like I can make the most of my membership, but I am hoping the facility will be open longer and have more times available that are conducive to adult work schedules. I do think this limited availability is due to Covid and being understaffed so hopefully it's only temporary. Other than that, it's a great YMCA! read more

Where families grow stronger together I have been playing basketball for decades so I have been in and belonged to many different Y's. Some were absolute cesspools that had some great, competitive hoop players but nothing else. Other were ancient and dirty places where you had to carry your stuff around with you, because no matter how large your lock, someone was going to cut it while you were away. Others places had people quite literally flashing guns or other weapons. Quite an sundry assortment of facilities. Fortunately the Y of Kent County is one of the friendliest, cleanest and most family oriented Y I have every been in. Lots of family programs for infants, youths and teens that include everything from gymnastics, crafts, indoor soccer, martial arts, dance and of course aquatics. A nice way to keep your delinquent from getting too doughy. For adults the Y offers lots of aerobic, dance and exercise classes, a nice pool, free weights and some nicely maintained exercise equipment and machines. Of course they also have a decent gym that that has pick up basketball going at times. Not the most competitive hoops, but nice friendly games with few fights. Of course there are some negatives. The parking lot is rather small and can be difficult to find a spot at times. The locker room and showers aren't especially spacious or nice. Sometimes the exercise equipment are all being used, especially during certain classes. All those great programs means that there usually are a lot of kids running around, although the staff does do a great job keeping them where they are suppose to be. One of the most annoying problems are cell phones. Even though there are signs everywhere with "No Cell Phones!", it seems a large portion of people ignore the signs and either stand in the way of sit on the machines while on the phone. I've seen people take a call while on a machine and simply put a towel or magazine on the equipment while they go off and prattle on the cell. The Y has a lot of different membership rates but can be a bit on the expensive side if you just join as an individual. The Y really becomes a bargain when you bring some kids or other family members with you. A cool place to have some fun, get some exercise and help keep the fleshiness at bay. read more

This place is awful. For the amount of money I put into the place I should have been treated a lot better. For starters, the pool is always freezing. My son who took swim lessons there was constantly shivering during lessons. I tried to enroll my son into private lessons. Forget it. "Brittany" never returns my call and you must speak with the aqua director. You would think for the price of private lessons Brittany would call you back but nope. Brittany probably doesn't even work there by the time I finish this review because their staff turn over rate is pathetic. Directors come and go faster than you can blink. This YMCA continues to reduce there hours of operation. They claim it's again due to lack of staff. Unless you're low income you will be paying $100 dollars a month for an establishment that's only open during business hours. Now let's get into their childcare. They kicked my son out of childcare because he has a developmental delay. They looked me in the eyes and stated "we just can't handle him". My son was devastated. Remind you I paid $250 a week for childcare on top of my monthly membership fee. It didn't matter. When I asked to speak to the director of childcare I was told "sorry he no longer works here and the position is vacant". Color me shocked. read more

We are on the family plan and love being members. Facility is clean and well kept with very friendly staff.

I'll start with the good stuff. The the daycare, splash park, outside park and pool are wonderful. The staff seems like they enjoy working with kinds and the daycare is always clean. I did a swim classes with my infant son and we both enjoyed in. Now the bad. The gym equipment has been falling apart for years and nobody fixes it. I have to screw in the Allen bolts on the dumbbells by hand every time I work out. Their are bolts with no nuts on them holding some of the seated equipment together. The padded foam parts of the machines are ripped and stained with other peoples sweat. The men's locker room is old and dirty. Tiles are piped out of the floor. Open prison style showers. The wood in the sauna is gross, like really gross. There's been an empty cup with an empty water bottle sitting on the window in the sauna for over a week. I gotta give the y credit on the kid stuff. They really are doing awesome in that department but the gym just sucks. read more

I went to the Kent County YMCA throughout my youth - and they have made some great family improvements - particularly the active family center. It is a ginormous room with a bouncy house, every type of toy imaginable, children's rock climbing walls, art table, sand table, and even a fully stocked baby room. The staff is generous and kind, and I love to bring my kids to play here especially on rainy or snowy days - rather than spend extra money at a local bounce place or indoor kid play space. You can choose to play there with your kids, or drop them off to play there under the supervision of the childcare staff. My children always have a great time and are tired and ready for nap when I come get them. The YMCA has a great assortment of summer camp options for kids as well. I didn't get it five stars because I do think the amount of variety in classes is lacking. I would like to see more yoga classes made available, and maybe some more adult dance classes. Swim lessons are a big there here as well, but the family swim times are pretty poor. If you have a young child - you're pretty much out of luck for family swim, since it's right in nap time or later in the evening. This is a huge bummer for our family since I really wish I could practice swimming with my kids. The gym fitness equipment is great and there's plenty of it. read more

UPDATE : For out of towners or people traveling : If you are perhaps in the middle of Warwick and Mansfield, MA, USE THE YMCA GREATER PROVIDENCE AREA!!! Trust me. There are 9 (I think, maybe 6) to choose from that are included in your membership. They cost less than the MA and the staff, facilities, and management are all FAR SUPERIOR to Hockomock!! We will be visiting the area for a bit and the kids and I need something to do while the hubs is working. The staff at this location is awesome. So super friendly and helpful. Lots of equipment, pool, playground, tennis! The whole 9 yards!! read more

Hi I go to camp at the y.m.c.a I am In the 7-9th grade adventure camp 2 for 7-9th graders. Let's start by talking about the respect here at the y.m.c.a. I enjoy my counselor her name is meg she is very nice to us especially those of us who can't control are actions. The buses do not have radios so we all take turns bringing a speaker meg and the other counselors are always there to say rather the music is camp appropriate or not. The one thing I do not enjoy about the respect level here at camp is that today a kid kicked my lunchbox they new my phone was on top of it and deleberitly still kicked it there is know a small crack in my phone. This child's name was eathen and he was not spoken to I was the one who had a witness my friend and meg who was the counselor even saw what had happened meg said to me and my friend that it was because I was bothering him and I did not even say I word to him nor was I near him. This iPhone which has and always will rightfully belong to me is barley even working know and is the iPhone version 6. I was very upset that my counselor told me that it was all my fault. Eathen also broke my water bottle which costs $10.00 and that also was on the same day which is today and did not once again get in trouble for doing so. Now to the safety I have been touched by a lot of boys and I have asked them not to touch me one being eathen. Once again all of the counselors saw this happening and did nothing about the whole situation. If you want yourself or your child to be safe I would suggest asking about the camp that has good ratings for you or your child's age. Also before I explain why I am writing this review please be aware that I am only a 7th soon to be 8th grade and I can't control what happens to your kid at camp ok-wa-nesset. Also with at further ado the reason I wrote this review and gave it the amount of stars that I did is because when I was younger I loved going to this camp so much but know being in adventure camp is extremely stressful and I do not enjoy being treated the way that both the counselors and kids do. Also the rumors are true they do not let your child go to the bathroom unless 2-5 other kids go with them. Phones are not aloud to be used unless you are in a camp that rides a bus no matter if there is a emergency. The counselors are kids ages 14-around like 50 years old. Also if your kid wants to be a counselor when they grow up then when they are in 7-9th grade that must learn how to be a boss during a $230.00 a week camp not including the bus or after care and also they have to be in this camp for all 10 of the weeks of summer and are not given a break during the day that camp I speak about right know if called "leaders in training" or "(L.I.T)" though they are not actually trained to be a counselor they just wear a badge and play games all day they also don't get to spend a lot of time interacting with the younger kids trust me I know because I have been in both of these camps before. Also adventure camp makes your kids walk even if they have asthma or need a break they are repeatedly told no sitting or keep up with the group which I personally believe is quite crazy especially if a kid has asthma. If your child is in adventure 1 or 2 we always combine and creat one big huge group of kids grades (5-9) I don't believe it is a good idea to mix grade (5) kids with grade (9) kids because it teaches your young kids about drama. I think that for young kids like pre-k to grade 5 the y.m.c.a is a perfect camp to go to but as your child gets older it then becomes a extremely negative choice in most situations. I love my YMCA. Kent County is a great example of what a Y with the right resources can be. It's not enormous, but the offerings are wide, varied, and enough to keep most any borderline fitness enthusiast involved and stimulated to keep up a regimen, try new exercise, ensure correct form, and maybe meet some nice people along the way. My family joined at the recommendation of family friends after a trial visit - the large, well-supervised playroom is such a plus that it almost single-handedly sold us on joining because it would allow the leverage to concentrate on fitness for a decent workout's time while our kids were safely occupied with fun (and burning a little energy of their own in the jumpy house). I like the various weight and cardio equipment; my wife likes the classes (like yoga and aerobics) and low-intensity, non-meathead crowd. The pool and spray park are nice-to-haves that we've taken advantage of, too, and our kids also like an occasional visit to the large, toy-filled sandbox out front. (There's a very kid-friendly bent to this location, and that can force you to be on your toes for scheduling - children's swim lessons fill up like Patriots tickets sell out, for instance.) Even the facade is pleasing to look at, and the staff is very friendly, willingly helpful, and knowledgable about many machines, regimens, and health practices. I've learned a good amount about fitness from asking, and have reaped some beneficial results as an outcome. At the same time, I rarely have to wait for a machine or station. It's not the same few structure my parents paid when they took me to our local branch growing up, but there's real opportunity to get your money's worth I'd you like what you see on an introductory tour of the facilities. One star off for the locker room facilities being pretty classically vintage-YMCA style and condition (though not too bad), however this place is always comfortably full for good reason. If the Y is the type of gym you're looking for, this is essentially the very best offering in RI, from my experience. read more

I have been going to KC YMCA for about a year now. It has great facilities for a family, not for profit. The pool is great, the equipment has just been updated. The staff is very friendly. If you have kids, they have great facilities inside and out. The day care is fantastic. You get 2 hours a day so you can work out , chill out or go shop. They have great programs, free and for a nominal fee. They range from yoga up to spin and some kind of new dance type training. read more

Been going here for about a month now. We live in walking distance which is nice. Inside: Good amount of elliptical/treadmill/stationary bikes. Never have to wait for a machine, never seems too crowded. Usually get to watch what I want on the TV, some treadmills have personal TVs. They have a good amount of free weights and machines/nautilus circuit, a nice pool with lots activities you can join for free. One thing that is a great value to my family is the children's center, on rainy days we take the kids to jump around in the bounce house or play with some of the stuff in the (rather large) children's section. They also offer day care if you want to drop off your child/children and work out, but we haven't taken advantage of that yet. Outside: They have a pond open in the summer, a splash pad for kids which is another great feature for our family. Also a nature path which I walked with a friend once. We thought it was a bit rough for kids and got lost near the end. Came out to a summer camp that we assume they still use (it was not summer when we walked the path) and another pond that looks open only to the camp. They have a lot of space at this Y and it looks like they are putting it to good use. Great for families! read more

More than your average gym Been coming to this Y since I was a young lad. Many great memories. Lost a lot of weight here back a few years ago. The gym has lots of cardio, including trendmills with individual TV's (or TV's with trendmills if your lazy to exercise :D), bikes, and cross-trainers. Your standard weight circuit, mats, nautilus, and free weights are also available. Wide variety of aerobic, yoga, Pilates, kickboxing type classes also, all free for members. However, what separates this from other gyms is the other "stuff". A pool, a gym with pickup and league b-ball, volleyball, etc. The 125 acres are used widely, with two ponds and a walking trail. I participated in the summer day camp and had a blast: boating, tennis, two ponds, and a spray park are all available. 'Nough said So while the gym up the street may have more cardio or more weights, does your gym have two ponds, a pool, a b-ball court, lighted tennis courts, a hugely funded financial aid program, and a sense of community rather than just the place I work out? read more

I just got a family membership and I can't believe I have slept on this for so long! You can visit any NE YMCA on their reciprocal program, which is great. The Kent Y has a great splash park that the kids loved. I can't wait to try some of their fitness classes. I went as a guest a while back to a cardio kickboxing class at the Hope street location and it was great. read more

This is a great, comfortable, family friendly gym. I'm super glad I became a member here. Hassle free and it has a pool!

This YMCA was recently renovated and features all new fitness equipment (treadmills with their own cable TVs!) and a huge kids playroom with a bounce house, super-sized building bricks and video games with a fitness angle (bikes/skateboarding/dancing). There are plenty of classes to take, most are included with membership, and the basketball court is always full of players. Friendly staffing and free child watch makes this a great place for families on a budget to enjoy together. read more

The people that are trained here are wonderful. Management is great and is always willing to help. Where there is a will there is a way for the ymca! My oldest has been going since kindergarten. Was a long time member... But I switched to a new gym. The equipment here was falling apart and a lot of the equipment was completely filthy. The kids care toys are always filthy as well. The pool and bathrooms are unsanitary.. There are a million dirty bandaids at the splash pad outside. I will not be returning. read more
