Staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. The health and wellness center is packed and there's very little room so much so that if you are on the cables people will walk through and even under the wire while you're using it. Lots of people sit on machines while resting to the point where lines will form waiting.. There's also a woman that works out in sandals so she can remove her shoes easily and she puts her feet on everything... she's there daily. They really need an attendant on the floor to monitor things. They also need more dumbbells and benches but first they need to make more room for all the members. It's crazy busy packed. read more

The pool doesn't look like it's gotten any love or updates since it was built. All submerged components are rusty and the lanes are very narrow. Swimming must be reserved five days in advance (45 minute sessions only) and almost no availability during fall and winter half of the day. The showers have no room. Women are always hanging out in the sauna on their phones and others carry out speaker phone calls in the locker room despite the numerous "phones forbidden" signs. No enforcement. Sad this is the only pool in the area. Totally monopolized and overpriced. read more

WAY too packed! The workers there are very nice at least the ones I have spoken to. Pam in the front desk always remembered my name when coming in. She's so sweet! Good luck trying to use the machine or even having space to workout even with the remodel. The woman's bathroom only has one changing room right at the center of it. I just think it's over priced for what you really get out of it. The price you pay to do classes or anything else isn't worth being a member. Might as well join the classes without the membership each month. During Covid even with it closed down I would get charged monthly still. read more

Clean ... super covid aware ... Limited locker room now (but niiice!)& sauna and steam off limits but pool is clean and ez to reserve lap time. I like the super early swim start time but would like to see Sunday hours. Nice people good facility. read more

Hi all! I've read a majority of the reviews and I've noticed that many people are dissatisfied with the child care that we provide. I just want to assure everyone who uses the Newport County YMCA child watch, that your kids are 100% safe. When checking your kids both in and out of the child watch area, the staff will ALWAYS check your ID. The only way to get into the room is with a code, which only staff know, therefore your kids will be safe inside of the room. With that being said, I would like to address some of the concerns parents have. There are no snacks allowed due to other people (kids/staff) having allergies, and we are trying to prevent any reactions. If kids would like to bring a drink, water is PREFERRED, but they can bring other drinks as well. Lastly, yes we have to call you and interrupt whatever you're doing, so you can change your kid's diaper because the staff are physically not allowed to change diapers. However, we will not call you if they need to go to the bathroom. The only times we call are if something urgent has happened. Also, please keep in mind that there is only 2-3 staff members and we can take up to 20 kiddos at a time, so it can get pretty hectic. Hope this clears some things up! read more

3.5 stars. This is a must-do if you're spending a winter in Newport. Always been a Y fan, but turns out this is the only place with activities during the cold weather. This makes them somewhat of a monopoly. The good. Very affordable, variety of classes, and onsite babysitting. You can't leave the premise, but can have your child cared for several hours. There's plenty of workout spaces (cardio, free weights, aerobic exercises) and the staff are pretty good. Gymnastics classes were great as of 2011, but I know the instructors have since changed. The not-so-good. The investment isn't as great as maybe other Y's. This surprised me when I initially moved here, but found out the middle class is very small (as is happening in other locales too). Thus, you make do with what you have. And sometimes that becomes a problem. The pool, for example, is often colder than expected and the services can sometimes be hit-or-miss (swimming lessons). Always will appreciate the Y for what it does, but I would encourage the staff here to get more creative with their facility. Seeing that you're the main draw, you have an opportunity to spruce things up and impact a lot of folks. read more

The Newport/MIddletown YMCA is a steal for a fitness center. First, the bad; it's a YMCA. Small children have day camps here every day, and the equpment (while functional and clean) can be dated, at times. The YMCA is cheap at 33$ a month, and offers amenities you wont get a WoW or Golds. Raquetball courts, Basketball courts, an swimming pool for laps, and a rock wall/obstacle course vary the exercise routine and keep it fresh. This is for gymnastics: Disorganized, when you show up you don't know who the teacher is or what group of kids yours should be joining. Second, the "observation" area for parents is a trip hazard. Parents letting kids drop coats and shoes any old place (like the walkway). There are so many classes going on at once that tumblers have to stop mid run because they are getting cut off by other kids running in front of them. The coaches look like teenagers and only one of them looks to have a handle on groups of unruly children. Most kids are left alone to do what looks like circuit training, only one kid getting any attention from the coach. I don't know, this is my first time enrolling my kid in gymnastics but for what we are paying I expected more. If there was another option I'd probably go there. read more

Not pleased with the level (or lack thereof) of childcare quality & safety. They don't ask for ID and leave the gate open all the time. I feel like my kids could be taken easily. Today was the last straw. One of the care taker's boyfriend came in and visited her and left the gate open after I had just closed it ! The sitter took my kid to the bathroom and was rude to the group of kids to the bathroom (one of them had Down syndrome - not cool!!). Also the front desk staff are rude and never say hello. I must be spoiled from the one in San Diego. It's very hard to sign up for classes - it feels like they don't want my money! Nobody at the front desk seems to be in the know. I'll be calling the manager on Monday about the lack of child care safety. Will likely cancel my membership. Poorly managed. The website leaves a lot to be desired ! You can't even sign up for classes there or get a decent schedule printout! No info on any sports or swimming activities and if there are , you can't sign up online. read more

Relative to other options, it's not cheap (about $50 a month) plus they charge $1 every time you rent a towel (what incompetent manager thought that one up) - in towels alone, I would spend as much per year as two annual memberships in Planet Fitness would cost ... just not worth it. read more

I just joined the Y and am fairly impressed. It is only $30 a day (for under 30 years old) and the equiptment is newer than the other local gym that was double the price. read more

LOVE Mike & Rich at the front desk. The kindest people. Don't love the rules of the Childcare--no snacks allowed, water in sippy cups ONLY (Nothing besides water), they interrupt your workout if your child has to go potty or needs a diaper change. Great selection of cardio equipment, however, the weight room definitely needs revamped. read more

I am disappointed with this Y. The customer service is horrible. 80% of my experience at the membership desk ended up with wrong information and me going on wild goose chases for my children's activities. They make you do the work instead of calling the department themselves. I continue my membership there for the proximity to my house, the summer camp and the treehouse child care while i work out. read more

Very disorganized. Personnel that are meant to know what they are doing - do not know what they are doing. My kids attended a YMCA program, we filled out some paperwork that the YMCA staff gave us - come to find out it was the incorrect paperwork (months later). Before moving out of state we spoke to this YMCA staff to ensure they knew we were no longer interested in the program and to ensure we owed nothing before moving. What makes matters worse is that the individual who had us sign the incorrect paperwork is no longer working in this location to say exactly what they did. Long story short, we were charged an undisclosed amount of $$ even after we had moved out of the state. Current management does not want to hear this, so - careful if you do business with this YMCA, ensure you get everything in writing and follow up with an e-mail about the transaction that just happen, or you might find yourself being deducted $$$ to attend the facilities after having moved out the state. Maybe this is the norm of doing business in this YMCA. One would think it is common sense - how do you attend the facilities when you are not even in the state. But, apparently here at this YMCA, common sense is not that common. BE CAREFUL here! read more
