Central Rock Gym in Warwick was the first CRG gym I've been to since moving to RI and NE in general, and I've been going back since! Membership prices are within if not slight lower than average which is great for beginners trying to stick to something new. On my first visit, the staff was very helpful and provided a tour of their facilities, and explained ground rules clearly. Having been to other gyms while in Texas it's always nice to see staff explain simple do's and don't's to new visitors. My only concern is regarding kids running under or too close to the walls while climbers are on them, as the parents are either not aware or unfazed of the dangers to both their kid and the climbers. It would be nice to see staff address this to the parents. Overall great gym, amazingly friendly and helpful staff, facilities are always cleaned, and the climbing community is one of the most supportive out there! read more

My regular gym is the Central Rock at Randolph, MA. This is my first time visiting this Warwick location and I am loving it! Compared to my home location, I felt that their bouldering had a great mix of problems catering to varying different skill levels. I checked the website and it said that both locations had 3,000 square feet of bouldering. This Warwick location felt like it was bigger and had more, but who knows! For those that have not been here, there is bouldering that is on the right wall upon entering that extends to the back and wraps to the left. Then there is some lead belay walls right across the main bouldering. Off to the left are more top rope and auto belay walls. They also have a fitness center with gym equipment as well as a wall with all types of holds to practice on/learn hold types. Lastly, there is a yoga studio that is available to members. I really enjoyed the variety and the set up of this location. Visiting different locations is definitely fun and I'll be back whenever I'm in the area itching to climb. read more

When home visiting Rhode Island, I did my typical climbing gym tour. When I was living in RI, this facility wasn't open yet, so I only climbed at the Rock Spot locations. If/when I move back, this will become my home gym. Not only is the setting diverse, it was fun. The wall angle variety was phenomenal and there was something for everyone. I'm 5'1 with a -3 ape index (my arms only span 4'10), so typically the harder the climb, the stretcher and less possible the spans become for me. Not here! The setters made everything accessible and recognize that putting holds further from each other isn't the only way to increase the difficulty. The only two down sides to this gym is the soft grading, which for climbers means the grade listed is much harder than what the climb actually is, and the lack of auto belays. For example, I flashed a V5 that probably would have been a V1 or V2 in the Lincoln Woods. There beign no auto belays also meant I had to either bring someone with me or I was forced to boulder, which as a sport climber is annoying. But if you can ignore the grades and accept that you have to boulder sometimes, I HIGHLY recommend this gym. read more

Great climbing gym. I believe, at the time of this writing, it is the newest gym in the CRG group. I am decreasing 1 star for, what I believe, is a silly design choice in the gym: They have a concrete walkway between the mats that separate the bouldering and top rope walls. It seems insignificant, but when you are wearing agros you do not want to be walking on a hard floor. read more

My first time there last night and I had such a fun time! We just bouldered-they had some pretty challenging set ups! But for the beginner like myself they had the levels that I could do as well!! Staff was so friendly and the facility was so clean! Will definitely go back and would recommend anyone there for a fun time! No matter how good or bad you are at rock climbing!!!! read more

great environment for beginner climbers- staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. membership is relatively cheap compared to other gyms and comes with rental equipment (until you get sick of it and end up buying your own) and classes to improve your skills. yoga and HIIT included too. other climbers are friendly too, always willing to help you if you want it and to support you. no shaming here, at least not that i've experienced. great spot to start read more

I really enjoy this gym. I'm mostly an outdoor climber but with a summer stint here in Providence I wanted to stay in shape. I've tried both gyms - here and Rock Spot - and as someone who doesn't have a climbing partner, I can only speak for the bouldering. The only thing Rock Spot has as a plus side are autobelays - if CRG has a few these it would be better in every way. The whole area is large and feels super spacious - I never feel like I'm in the way of anyone else when climbing. Also, as someone who runs perpetually hot and has ever sweaty hands, I appreciate that CRG has pretty good temperature regulation, which I can't say about RS. The bouldering area is large and well thought out. As someone who isn't particularly great at bouldering, I appreciate that there are enough easy ones to keep me entertained and challenged without getting overtly frustrate. There are plenty of V0-V3 for those of you starting out, and plenty of much harder routes for more experienced climbers. I also love that all the walls aren't just vertical or overhung - there are a few walls (both boulder and toprope) that are less than vertical, plus a huge variety of inclines. They have a board up front that tells you the upcoming schedule of re-sets. I've been coming for about two months and maybe 40% of the bouldering walls have been reset. I think this is the perfect turnover - long enough to work on projects, not too long that you plateau or get bored. Again, the venue is spacious enough that it always feels quiet, even when it's been busy. The staff have all been lovely as well. I don't use the gym equipment, but it looks large with a good variety. Give this place a shot, you won't be disappointed. read more

I've been to plenty of rock climbing gyms, and this has been my absolute favorite. Admittedly, other gyms have better facilities (bigger lead walls, more boulder walls, etc.), but when climbing at those I always find myself missing the CRG in Warwick. Everyone who works and climbs there is incredibly friendly and caring, and that's a huge part of why I love climbing. Below are some more specific pros and cons I've observed after climbing at the CRG in Warwick for over a year and a half. I'm a college student who will graduate soon, and I find myself worrying about finding a new gym I love as much as CRG Warwick. I originally chose between Rockspot and CRG, and I'm so glad I ended up at CRG. PROS -The climbing is great. Routes are reset regularly; they're reset well and with care, and I can always find something both challenging and engaging. This should be one's main consideration in climbing gyms, and CRG Warwick certainly ticks that box with ease. -The social atmosphere at the gym is wonderful, largely because of the wonderful people who work there. -The lighting in the gym is great at all times of the day. This can seem like a minor detail, but for me a well-lit gym is fundamental for winter training. -The walls and holds are very new, so the friction is great (prepares your skin for granite really well too!). -The fitness room has everything I want, from free-weights to a tension board, from treadmills to circuits and campus boards. -The bathroom is always clean and there's a great shower if you need it (bring your own towel). -There is a sufficient variety of overhung and slabby walls, for both bouldering and ropes. -The membership has tons of free classes that I've never used. That option is wonderful and it's cool how many options I have. Also, as a CRG member, you have free access to climbing gyms all over the north east. I went to NYC for a weekend and climbed for free in their Manhattan gym. CONS -The grades are pretty soft, particularly for the boulders. This is fine, so long as they are consistent, but sometimes the grades feel on par with outside, and sometimes they feel like CRG Warwick grades. Overall, a minor issue. -The majority of the boulders finish by grabbing the top of the wall. This is fun (if in doubt, dyno to the top!), but hasn't prepared me well for more technical outdoor top outs when climbing my limit (more air starts would be great). -I believe there is only one route setter. Others help him, to be sure, but I find that I've gotten pretty accustomed to his overall style. Of course, I love all the routes and have no complaints about the climbs themselves, but some more variety in setter-vision would help me progress as a well-balanced climber. -The lead wall is not as tall as other gyms, and the boulder walls miss out on more extreme overhangs. That being said, I don't find myself wishing for them. The cons overall are minor in comparison to the pros. This is my favorite gym, and I genuinely love it! read more

So excited to see CRG make it into Rhode Island and do so with what is now easily the best gym in the state. The whole facility was put together thoughtfully. The setting is fantastic, the work out room is stocked with incredible fitness equipment, and all of the staff are friendly and knowledgable. Glad to have a climbing forward gym only 20 minutes from Providence. read more
