I got a Groupon for a day pass including gear for under $20. When I arrived, I wasn't actually sure which building it was because there wasn't great signage. The check-in process was a bit chaotic - it didn't seem like a great system was in place. There was a mandatory safety training for first-timers, so we also had to wait a bit for that. All things considered, once I actually started climbing, it was a great time. My favorite part about this place is the auto-belay walls. A lot of the people I came with weren't certified to belay, so this was a great option in addition to the bouldering.

Screw the infinity pool, this place has an infinity wall. It's technically called a treadwall, but it's basically a rock climbing machine that goes in loops and you can adjust the speed. A level 5 speed is the fastest. It's pretty tough to keep up. This place has a really helpful staff and a lot of activities to do. If there are too many people climbing, you can practice your balance on a slack line, run on a treadmill, lift weights, hang on a wall to train your grip, etc. For the noobs, they have this awesome slide you can go down when you successfully climb over the edge of the bouldering area. Sometimes there are discounts on certain days or even on Groupon. It's close to the Broadway T stop. It's a little out of the way for me, so I probably won't come too often.

Great rock climbing spot! The only reason they don't get all five stars on my review is that their crash pads could be improved. They do not feel as safe as they could. The level system in the gym is also interesting as they provide a peer contributed scale of grades for each route. Its the first gym I have seen that uses auto-belays.

I love this place for bouldering. I'm not an expert climber by any means, but I love that they have (super fun) problems for every skill level. The location is easy to get to from the Broadway stop on the Red Line and the gym is never too crowded. The staff is great and and prices here are generally pretty reasonable, even with gear. My friend and I took a belay class here and within an hour felt really confident with the technique taught here. Our instructor, Ben, was really attentive and he also helped us with our climbing. My friend and I also did an outdoor climbing session with another staff member, which was really fun. We learned crack climbing - pretty different from climbing at the gym, but a great experience. If you're looking to top rope, I would probably suggest going to Metro Rock in Everett, but Rock Spot is great for bouldering. Happy climbing!

The good: Tons of bouldering. Wide open spaces. Cool slide after you top out. When I was here, there was a nice little top-roping class exhibit. The staff are SUPER friendly and energetic, I loved that! 5/5 The bad: There's almost no top-roping at all. In terms of wall-climbing space, this place has probably 1/3 to 1/2 of what Brooklyn Boulders Somerville or MetroRock have. The ratings are set pretty high. 2/5 I think this place would be great for climbers who focus on bouldering, like me. But definitely not for top-ropers. Overall the experience was fairly pleasing, and it's always fun to check out a new gym.

Great spot for a casual workout by yourself or with a group. After you sign in at the front desk they have lockers to put your stuff away, you can either rent a lock for $2 or bring your own, We went after work, around 7, and I believe that is rush hour because there werent many lockers available. Once you are inside you get your shoes and they give you a quick lesson on how to use the suspensions and then its just you, on your own bringing out your inter mountaineer. Alot of the walls, if not all, allow you to hook, climb and discend on your own. The other half of the gym requires no suspension and once you climb over the wall you theres a slide! Fun place, nice staff, def going back!

I really want to give this gym 5 stars. The staff are incredibly nice and the hours are great. However, the routes leave something to be desired. First, the top rope walls are relatively short. On the lower grades, the walls are so short, I would be comfortable free soloing and I'm meticulous about safety. It's basically just a few feet higher than other bouldering walls. The lead climbing is also a little dicey. The walls really only have four clips that are very close together, and more importantly, close to the ground. I would not be comfortable taking a whip. Finally, the bouldering. The routes have a strange set up. There are exceedingly long reaches (which becomes a dyno) for a v1/v2. I would recommend setting up lower grade routes so new climber can learn instead of doing crazy moves. Focus more on technique than long, impossible (for new people) reaches. The reaches are really discouraging when you first start out. You can train your body to be stronger at crimps and slopers when you're starting out, but for me, dynoing isn't the easiest thing to learn in the first couple of months.

Lots of great bouldering with lots of roofs! The walls are really tall but the pads are good. The setting is very good and pretty well filled in up to V8, quite sparse above that. It's really nice to get so many roofs problems at low grade, it's usually quite rare to get those! They also have a few top ropes and auto belays, but I haven't climbed on those. The gym is right next to the Broadway T stop on the red line, just a few stops away from downtown, which is very convenient as well. On a side note, they actually have a lot of gear for sale as well, with a good selection of shoes, harnesses, chalk bags, ropes, rope bags, and a few carabiners and slings as well. In summary, a great new bouldering gym just a few minutes away from downtown! Awesome! Can't wait to climb there some more!

An awesome idea! It's harder than it looks!

Wow this is definitely my favorite climbing gym I've been to while on vacation! This review is only for the bouldering area, as I've only been once and just to boulder. This gym is about a half mile from the Broadway redline stop in Boston. A day pass with shoes cost me 20$ (this includes a 2$ college student ID discount). They have a pretty good size bouldering area. Their top rope seemed minimal, however, if you are into that sort of thing. The staff is nice, the routes are fun, but what sets this gym apart are all the innovative ideas going on in the bouldering areas. First off they seem to take a lot of feedbacks on the grading of the routes. All routes have a place for you to mark "easier," "accurate," or "harder." They even have a whole section where the routes are somewhat ungraded. They simply have a range of three possible grades and ask you to vote on them. I had a lot of fun climbing these and debating with myself what the grade should be. They also have something called the "Traverse Challenge" where you start from at one end of the gym and climb sideways along the walls, all the way around to the other end of the gym. While I didn't call over a staff member for an official try, I attempted the challenge on my own out of curiosity. I did not even get close, but it was extremely fun (and difficult)! This definitely would be a gym I would love to come back to for the traverse challenge and voting on route grades.

The gym itself was much smaller than anticipated. Staff was helpful but part of the wall was closed making access even more limited. The climbing wall was rather small even if that section was open. The gym area had enough equipment to lift and improvise other work outs. They only had one of two showers operable, as one shower was filled with storage. When I went to use the operable shower I was told not to take a hot shower or not to be longer than 10 minutes because it would set off the fire alarm and sprinklers in the whole building. I found it strange but there was a fire alarm/detector in the bathroom so I set a timer. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting. More than one days worth of hair in the shower. Grime on the walls and floors. The bathroom area outside of the shower was also dirty. Before I showered staff went into the bathroom to fill his mop bucket and mopped the entire floor in the main climbing area but didn't touch the bathroom itself. I would not recommend this gym if you are passing through and looking for a space to climb and hang out like we were.

Thankfully someone who has access let me through. You then have to go upstairs. As soon as you enter you're hit with humidity and stuffiness. The gym definitely requires better ventilation. I have experienced most gyms in the Boston area and other gyms in a few different states just to give my review context.. CRG Stoneham is a friendly gym with knowledgeable staff. I notice some of the staff came from a different gym that closed down which is great to see them in my local gym and able to ask them questions knowing they have experience. I don't feel any awkwardness if I talk to them or ask them some questions. They have always been willing to answer my questions or help me if needed. The space is modern and clean. I never feel like this place is dirty and gross despite it being a climbing gym which is nice. They sell small amounts of gear chalk, shirts, shoes and even ropes (which one colleague told me just have not been put out yet). This is great if you like buying stuff from a gym ( I personally don't but I did buy some swag like a hoodie and a T-Shirt). The gym itself is pretty large with two floors. The first floor mixed between top rope and lead climbing, which has roots for all levels and experience from straight vertical routes to overhang for lead. The variety of skill levels is nice for people who are not avid climbers or getting back to it. Do not let that fool you though there are plenty of experience routes that will be a good workout for the avid climbers searching for the indoor challenge. The bouldering area on the second floor has a good wall selection with plenty of space. Everything from slab and V0 to overhang V7 and up. I really like the variety that this whole space offers. Also there is a tension board training wall, and a hang board ladder system that provides a great training section and nice variety to just climbing routes. Again something for every skill level including a warm up/kids wall that is nice. They have a modest workout area, couple treadmills and cardio machines, two squat racks, dumbbells, hang-boards and other training equipment. I never have a problem using what I need in here because they have enough equipment for everyone. I can do a complete workout here that is not climbing related with all the equipment they have. The membership has some decent perks, free classes that are put on by the gym, a progression training from coaches (not sure if you pay extra for that or not but it is offered). One of my favorite parts is the employee belay. They are there a few days a week and will belay you if you do not have a partner. It does not cost money, granted you can not take up your entire session with this employee but the fact they offer this is amazing. Also you can pay 30 per hour and have an employee belay you if you would like. They also offer a adult team for the more competitive climbers for 85 monthly plus membership. With good come a few bad things. One being the website. I know not gym related specifically but I find some of the programs they offer hard to find on the site and I actually needed to email management to get the information (management got back to me within 24 hours which was great). As other reviewers have commented climbers with shoes walking around the bathroom. There is a sign on the bathroom door but it didn't seem to stop the people I have seen in there on a few different occasions so this is an issue and not a one time problem. The weekends are usually a little chaotic with some form of birthday party, which lead to kids sort of running around wild at times. I was doing some overhang work last week, when i feel off the wall I almost took out some little kid just running around the boulder area. My concerns is the kid will get hurt because I fall on them from any height. This does seem to happen quite a bit as other reviewers have commented and I tend to only notice this on weekends when there is a birthday or something. Not the worst thing but for me I would feel awful falling on some kid zooming around and hurt him or something. Closing thoughts: Definitely check this gym out if you are into climbing, plenty of gyms included in the membership including the Cambridge location which is bouldering only and geared toward more experience climbers but still awesome. Friendly staff and clean location. For 100 a month I feel like I get my money worth. Keep up the great work. If anyone read this far thanks.
