My husband and I have both had bad experiences with this doctor. Mine: I went to him for treatment of persistent neck and shoulder pain if had since a car accident in 2001 that had worsened after my first pregnancy. At the first appointment he only offered physical therapy (no x-rays, kind of treated me like I was faking this whole thing), which I tried and which did nothing. I went back for a follow up and when we finally did x-rays it showed bone spurs where I'd been having pain. I asked if I should have an MRI and he replied, quote, "An MRI will tell us nothing." And suggested more of the physical therapy. When I reported, the therapist acted stunned that he had told me to do that for bone spurs that were causing a nerve problem. After we did one session my problem was worse than ever. I then found a new doctor, who immediately ordered an MRI, who discovered I have SEVERAL issues in my neck area, which were treated with a cortisone epidural injection. That doctor also expressed shock that Dr. Aptekar didn't think an MRI would help. I'm now greatly relieved of my pain. My husband: My husband then went to Dr. Aptekar for his left thumb that was broken 20 years ago and never healed correctly, and was recently re-injured. His left thumb is very visibly swollen and inflamed to the naked eye. He reported to me that Dr. Aptekar never looked at the X-Rays, and in fact didn't even know they had been done at first. He then asked if it was his right thumb after he had spent time filling out a lot of paper for his left thumb, and had x-rays taken on the left thumb. He then told my husband that basically nothing can be done, even though my husband has already been told by another doctor he needs surgery to fix this. After he called the office manager to report incompetent service, we received a call from the Doctor the next day, saying he had heard he "didn't answer all questions". I get upset even driving by this guys office now. read more

If I could do 0 stars I would. Do not come here! I went last year because I had twisted my foot and had been having pain for months. I had gotten x-rays done and those seemed fine nothing broken. I come into my appointment and this "Doctor" comes in and said I am getting checked for my foot and goes straight to ordering an MRI for me. Didn't ask me what happened and didn't even look at my foot. So I'm already sketchy with his way of checking his patients. I go and get a $500 MRI done and come back and he just walks in and says, "you're fine nothing is wrong with you. It should get better in 6 months (from the date of falling)." No explaining what he saw in my x-ray, no tips on how to deal with the pain, no exercises or stretches..nothing. Walks out like nothing. He does not care about his patients he just cares about getting you in and out and charging your insurance. He does not enjoy his profession and you can see that right away. The staff was very helpful. The doctor on the other hand barely talked to me. He looked at my hand as if it was nothing. My hand is swollen, I can barely bend my fingers without pain. I told him that I was a sculptor and he gave me an amused look? He did not ask about my pain level or cared. No medications or treatments were explained. He did not even give me a diagnosis!! The secretary decided to write in "sprained wrist"! Which by the way, not what the problem is, the pain is between my thumb and index and middle fingers. How did she figure it was a sprained wrist? I was rushed out with a physical therapy script and see you in 2 weeks! Not sure how he gets these great reviews. Dr.butcher has been my doctor for the past two years and i can not express how much he has done for me and how much i love and trust him... he really listens and really wants to help you and he will in any way possible... I have been the mystery case for the past few years with almost all of the doctors i have seen for my back.. especially the doctors in LA (horrible)... But doctor butcher follows up and is working with two other doctors to make sure that until we can figure out what is going on that i am as comftorable as possible... Over the weekend i actually totaled my car and had to be taken to the hospital, and I am so thankful that doctor Butcher came to the hospital as well.. he got there before my parents.. he talked to the police officer to explain my back pain, the doctors, and he was able to calm my mother down before she was able to see me.. He's a little rushed when he sees you. I've had to check the billing a bit, as it was screwed up (probably more the billing company than Dr. Aptekar's staff). However, everything eventually was taken care of. All this being said, he fixed my shoulder when no one else was able to. I had pain for two years, physical therapy for much of that time, and a surgery. My previous orthopedist swore that nothing was wrong with me after she operated on me. 6 months after my surgery with Dr. Aptekar a year later (who found a bone spur), I am the way I was before the pain started. I am so grateful for this, so I can forgive a little rush and a little lack of organization. He's a nice guy. The staff is very nice as well. Found this practice because they take Anthem Blue Cross Covered California. To my surprise very few doctors take this insurance. I am here to get a cast for a fractured ankle seeing Dr Sagoo who was first available. Their paperwork for new patients is onerous. Requires 13 pages of info much of it background and repeated questions about alcohol use. I found those particularly odd even though I completed them all. Attention to service is excellent. Staff is very helpful. Dr Sagoo was very efficient and clear. I left with in an hour of arrival after being xrayed and fitted with a boot. I would recommend highly. read more

He is an absolute quack and does not care for the patient in the slightest. I went in after dislocating my shoulder for advice on the steps to take next. After waiting over an hour past my appointment time, I went in the patient room . The nurse did not even know what my condition was even after filing 30 minutes of paperwork and booking an appointment 2 weeks in advance. Finally, Dr. Apetkar came in the room to examine. However, HE DID NOT EVEN TOUCH MY SHOULDER ONCE. He came in and the entire interaction lasted about 20 seconds. He said to keep it in a sling for four weeks and come back to him after. Fast forward four weeks. I go in again. Same thing. Terrible service. Long wait. He comes into the room again. EXACT SAME THING. Did not examine me whatsoever. This interaction lasted maybe 30 seconds this time, I was proud of him, making some time out of his exhausting day to tell me 3 sentences. This time, I can now take off this sling, and guess what?? I get to see him in 4 weeks again!! So of course, I booked an appointment with a different surgeon. This surgeon thoroughly examined me, asked all questions related to the incident, room and x-ray, cleared me for weightlifting, and set me up for top notch physical therapy with a detailed plan for recovery Long story short, this (less than a) man offers short, terrible service, and only cares for profit. read more

I only had one appointment with Dr. Aptekar end of February, he told me to take Celebrex for 6 weeks and come back to see him. He asked me my pharmacy name and location, I believe the office is sending the prescription to my pharmacy. After a week, I haven't heard from CVS Los Gatos, I called Dr. Aptekar's office, Patricia said I need to have my pharmacy fax the doctor's office the "PRESCRIPTION REQUEST OR ARPPVAL FORM" for Celebrax, I did and the Pharmacy called me twice telling me they faxed the request twice but never heard from them . My second appointment is April 2, I called to cancel my appointment since there is no need to see the doctor if I never got the Celebrex; Patricia answered the phone, she goes "you are a new patient right"? Am I suppose to spend more time and money with this doctor's office? read more

I was receiving treatment from Dr. Aptekar regarding my shoulder injury. Based on several visits, Xrays, an MRI, prescriptions, PT, and an injection it was decided that surgery would be the best route. Throughout my visits I can say that the staff is very friendly and helpful. The Dr., however, is not up to par. He does not listen to what you are saying, frequently rushes you out of the office visits, and rarely takes the time to actually examine you. On several occasions my visits there lasted less than 30 seconds! A great way to charge my insurance for a $300 visit. If I could go back I would have went out of my network with my first choice. Dr. Aptekar recently performed total knee replacements for both of my mothers' knees. Our experience with him and his whole staff has been amazing! From the moment you meet with him he is professional, knowledgeable and very caring. His staff takes care of all paperwork and appointments in a timely manner and also very friendly every visit! Dr. Aptekar really helped us prepare before the procedure and made sure everything was in place. Pre-op went smoothly and he made sure to always check in with us before the surgery. Post surgery Dr. Aptekar made sure to come see the family and kept us updated on our mother, which was very comforting. During the recovery process my mom had no issues and everything went perfect. This companies billing is ridiculous. I have health insurance, went to visit them 1 time for a consultation and 2 years later they send me a bill. My insurance took care of this 2 years ago. I call them to give me an explanation. They send me to an outside billing office that has no idea why. I now have a collection company calling me saying I owe them $650.00. Dr. Robert seems nice and understanding, and the office is clean. I am having Migrane and headache, back pain and Hand and finger pain, He told me that he knows nothing about Migrane issue, then he asked my other issues. The funny part is I am still having back pain and my finger and hand is hurting, but he told me at end that he think that I can go back to work with only 8 hours work should be fine. ;-( his many patients are all referred by insurance company and examiner, He knows how to deal with insurance company and he is partner with them, he seems just push people back to work and then he can continue getting pay by insurance company. I had a trigger finger issues and went to see Dr.Aptekar. I was able to quickly schedule an appointment and the staff was very friendly. The doctor ordered x-rays done and then recommended the surgery done since I already had other options exhausted. I had a very smooth sailing before, during and right after the surgery. The recovery was going well initially and I had regular appointments with Dr.Aptekar's team taking care of me and started the PT afterwards. Unfortunately, within 2.5 weeks after the surgery I noticed blistering on my palms that got worse during PT and suspected that it was an infection. I mentioned it several times to my PTs and subsequently dropped out of physical therapy at that office since the staff there did not seem to have any idea on what to do and did nothing to refer me back to the doctor's office. Finally, I just walked in to this clinic's doctors office without an appointment and insisted on being seen. Dr. Butcher(another surgeon there) saw me right away and collected the culture off the infected area. He prescribed an antibiotic pills that I have been so far taking with little or no effect. He also referred me back to my surgeon, Dr. Aptekar who saw me and said that everything was fabulous and great although I was taking antibiotic pills and clearly blistering with the ongoing infection. :) Up to now I have not heard about the results from the infection culture test and I am not sure if the prescribed medicine actually works at all:) read more

I never expected to be writing another review, as I hoped to not ever need surgery again. I was wrong. Being an overweight guy in his, ahem, 50's, means that some of the stuff you did in your teens and twenties will come back to haunt you. In my case, I was on a motor scooter in Bali last June, with the family. Literally, my family was on the scooter with me. It's a thing over there. We had a blast! Except for one thing. Balinese motor scooters are designed for Balinese people, not for 6'3", 250 lb. Westerners. After three hours of riding, with my knees wedged into the fairing, my left knee was stiff. Originally, I thought this was just muscle strain (as did Dr. Aptekar). Three weeks later, it was clear that there was something more serious, as the pain didn't dissipate, but was getting worse. When I went back to the office, I was seen by Dr. Butcher, as Dr. Aptekar was out that day. Dr. Butcher gave me a cortisone injection and ordered an MRI. The injection worked great, but lasted only a day and a half. When the MRI results came back, I ended up seeing Dr. Sagoo (so I had the trifecta of doctors at the practice). Dr. Sago explained that I had a torn meniscus, and described the surgery that would repair the injury. He also explained that with my situation, that I'd have to make lifestyle changes (exercise, diet, no more jumping rope, etc.) but that I should be fine. I had one final, pre-surgical visit with Dr. Aptekar, where he outlined my options (live with the situation and make adaptations, or have the arthroscopic procedure). I asked him directly what kind of advice he'd give one of his family members. He said, "have it done." After years of intermittent pain, and several months of moderate-to-severe pain, that is what I wanted to hear (and yes, I was still nervous). When it was time to schedule the surgery, I chose to stay with Dr. Aptekar, because a: I trust him, and b: he already had a past relationship with my left leg, and they seemed to be on good terms. The operation was on a Monday (two weeks ago as I write this). When I awoke, I could put light weight on my leg (I was outfitted with crutches, a knee brace/ice pack, and some leg pump things that would help my blood circulate while I was recovering in bed). I was also given a prescription for painkillers, in addition to the Tylenol I was already taking. Here's the awesome thing: I barely needed the pain relief medication. I used the ice pack religiously. I took the Tylenol as directed. I had to take Tramadol maybe four times. I was able to walk (albeit with crutches) pretty much immediately. There was no pain, and very minor swelling. Again, the ice pack worked best. As I write this, it's been two weeks since the procedure. I'm not using my crutches (I keep them in the car just in case). There's a little swelling if I overdo it, but I'm sure this will fade in time. What I also notice is that I no longer feel the meniscus "floating" around in my knee. I'm not limping anymore. I certainly don't feel anywhere near the pain I felt before the surgery. The practice has a very good physical therapy center as well (they were very helpful when I had my achilles surgery). When I showed Diana, the physical therapist the "inner-knee" photos of the procedure, and asked her to decipher them, she exclaimed, "Wow! You were really torn up!" Since I come from a family where the men-folk don't go to doctors until there's a tag going on the toe, this was very validating to hear! I'm very satisfied with the care I receive from Dr. Aptekar and the team at SJ Orthodocs. read more

What would we do without Dr. Aptekar? Thirty five years ago my father had a accident and almost cut off 4 fingers, thanks to Dr. Aptekar Dad lived a full active life as a carpenter. My entire family has been going to him since them. What keeps us coming back is his caring, gentle manner and an incredible mind and surgical talent. I've had a hip replacement at a young age, joint replacements, shoulder and many joint surgeries. All done by this incredible person. I recommend him to all my friends and family members. He diagnosed my friend as having Muscular Dystrophy just in one visit, after she had been to many doctors who couldn't discover what was wrong with her. Thank you to Dr. Aptekar and his fantastic staff! They keep me moving and enjoying life, but especially thank you to Dr. Aptekar for his caring and talent! I fell and injured my right wrist severely on November 2nd this year (2012). I was immediately taken to an ER at El Camino Hospital (ECH) where a set of X-ray was taken, and my wrist was splinted and slinged by an ER doctor. I was told to see an orthopedic specialist within a week or so. I had a lot of pain in my wrist, which was totally unusable, and suspected my wrist had fractures. About a week after I fell, I was seen by Dr. Aptekar. One of his staff took a set of X-ray, but Dr. Aptekar asked me if I brought the one from ECH. He didn't even undo my splint to inspect the wrist to see the range of motion I had. Then he asked me what the diagnosis was at ECH. I showed him the record I was given by the ECH, which indicated only that I may have a sprain. He asked me if I'm sure they told me that there are no broken bones. I told him that ER staff was unable to diagnose but suggested I'd see a specialist and showed him the list of specialists given by ECH. He took the list from me, folded and put in his pocket. Though I said that I'd like to keep the list, he said he's with the ECH system and I'd no longer need the list and didn't give it back to me. Then he just took my splint off my wrist, leaving it totally unprotected, and said to go to a drug store and buy a brace for the wrist. Then he was about to leave the room. He still have not even touched my wrist to inspect it. So I told him that I should have better instructions as to how to care for it. To my surprise, he reached into the trash bin where he threw all my splint materials from ECH, and grabbed the bandage that held the splint, and said "here, you may need this." I told him I'd rather buy a new one and asked him to put it back in the trash bin. I was appalled by this, but I went and bought a brace as I was told and started wearing it, but the pain was still very severe. So I called the clinic the next day and made an appointment with another doctor at the clinic. But when I went to see this "other doctor", I was told that Dr. Aptekar is seeing me. Again I told him how much pain I had. He told me that what I have is a sort of a contusion, which woul heal only with time. Only when I asked if I should have a physical therapy, he responded that he can prescribe it IF I WANTED it. Two days later, I went to see a different orthopedic specialist who inspected my wrist thoroughly first, and ordered his technician a set of 5 X-rays. After reviewing the X-rays, he told me I had distal radius fractures that are slowly healing. He said there's no need to operate, but it's imperative that I do physical therapy and prescribed it immediately. In my view, any doctor who misdiagnoses an injury so typical as this should have his license reviewed. If you get injured and suspect anything more than a minor sprain, you should go to a specialist other than Dr. Aptekar. read more

While Dr. Aptekar may be experienced in his field, he has zero experience in patient care, how to interact with patients, nor does he posses any bedside manners. I made an appointment to see him after my MRI showed that I had a herniated disc and an abnormal spot on my back muscle. I had the radiologist send in my scans and report to him 2-3 days prior to my appointment, so that he could make the appropriate assessment and walk me through everything. Fast forward to my appointment and waiting for Dr. Aptekar to come in. He sat down and asked me what I was in for, which I proceeded to tell him the two reasons: 1) the chronic back pain (from my hernianted disc) and 2) the spot on my back muscle. He did a quick exam (nothing thorough), touched the spot where the scan had said the small mass was, and proceeded to read my report. He hadn't even looked at my scans or read the report before seeing me. As he was reading the report in front of me, he kept making comments like, "This is strange, this is very very strange. Hmmm I haven't seen anything like this." Can you imagine going into an appointment, already nervous about what the results may be, and listening to a doctor making comments like that? My husband and I asked him to tell us if the result was benign or something malignant and dangerous. He looked at me and simply said, "I wish I could tell you this was benign." My heart sank to my stomach immediately, and I completely shut down. He wouldn't explain anything after that, and ONLY after my husband kept probing him with detailed questions, did Dr. Aptekar make it more clear that what he meant was that this isn't malignant/cancer but it's inconclusive, looks benign from what he is reading. He gave me three options, two which included a biopsy, which he did not recommend. In fact, he shared a medical case to try and scare us from going down the biopsy route. He even said, "I'm not trying to scare you, but I am making a point." Not to mention he didn't even bother going over my herniated disc, even though that was part of the reason why I wanted to see him in the first place. I was completely confused after that and decided to go for a second opinion. I am so happy I went for a second opinion with another doctor, a specialist (neurosurgeon) in back and spinal injuries. The specialist was reassuring, confident, informative, empathetic, caring...all the positives a doctor should be. He did a thorough assessment on me and concluded that I shouldn't worry about anything regarding the small mass in my muscle. He also provided great guidance on how to take care of the herniated disc, and said he would continue monitoring me for the next few months. You can't even imagine the relief I felt after seeing the specialist. I personally believe that a great doctor isn't just someone who is knowledgeable in his/her specialty and field. A great doctor is also someone who can empathize with the patient, care, and show compassion. Dr. Aptekar possesses none of these traits, and I would not recommend him. read more

I visited this clinic 3 times and met with Dr. Aptekar. He immediately ordered MRI's for both knees. After looking at them, he gave me a diagnosis and told me I needed to get on his surgery schedule. I asked what he was going to do in surgery and he said, "Mow the lawn and cut the weeds." I asked him to expand and he told me to look it up on his website. Seriously... The icing on the cake was when my insurance company was billed OVER $2,500 for ONE cortisone shot. You should have seen the parade in that room. Someone with an ultrasound machine, a nurse, another doctor and Dr. Aptekar. How many people does it take to give a cortisone shot?? Here's the EXTRA icing on the cake - he leaves the big needle in my knee for FIVE extra minutes to take an x-ray picture of the needle in me to send to the insurance company to prove he did the shot and then billed the insurance company for the x-ray. He also has in house physical therapy which was a complete joke. On my first appt I was left waiting for 40 minutes while the woman in charge put together my program, which consisted of some exercises printed on the internet. She spent five minutes with me before turning me over to the assistant PT. Then the assistant PT put me to work. She never checked my form, just told me to do 10 of these, 20 of those, etc. They had so many people packed in these two tiny rooms there wasn't enough room for everyone and not enough coverage to help the patients. The PT department is rude and uncaring. You have been warned! read more

Don't waste your time. I feel its a sham, he gets referred accident patients and simply talks to you for 15 minutes and will cycle you through 3-5 appointments doing nothing! I don't think he's truly interested in the patients. No constructive treatment or results. Personally, I felt he was just there to run up the bill and collect a check. Two months ago after a minor stubble down a couple of stairs I was in extreme hip and thigh pain on my right side. it was so intense I could not sleep. Went to Dr Aptekar expecting to need hip replacement, but "No," he said. After x-rays he explained it is probably a back problem. MRI proved him right. My L1 thru L5 were compressed with bulging disk. I was sure I was in need of Laser Disk surgery but, 'NO," again he said. "Check into my physical therapy clinic next door and start getting therapy 3 time a week. OMG he was right! I just need to strengthen my core and lose some weight. Within days I was feeling better. It has now been 2 months and I am 90% pain free. I will continue his therapy till I am 100% pain free, which I expect to be in the near future. In two weeks I am off to Montana on a 2400 mile motorcycle trip. Wah-whoo. Thank you Doctor Aptekar. read more

Dr. Aptekar is the best!! I had a hip replacement 2 years ago and continued to have severe pain due to a spur. My previous surgeon told me to go to physical therapy and said he could do surgery, but probably would cause more problems. I went to Dr. Aptekar for a second opinion. He was very thorough, professional, and answered all my questions. He did the surgery and removed a huge cyst the size of a plum! I followed up with physical therapy and was able to stand up straight for the first time in years. I'm so very grateful for Dr. Aptekar to take me on as his patient.. Dr. Aptekar treated me with respect and was always courteous, despite running a very busy practice. Additionally, I was very impressed with how efficient and knowledgeable the entire office and physical therapy staff managed the patients and scheduling. They were always polite, friendly, and helpful. I learned that Dr. Aptekar taught at Stanford and loves to teach. He travels to countries all over the world donating his time doing surgeries, and because he loves to teach, trains the doctors there. Pretty amazing, if you ask me! I want to add that Dr. Aptekar is located on Bascom Avenue. The Surgery Center is in the building next door and Physical Therapy is located next to his office, all very convenient. read more

Dr. Aptekar was recommended to me by the ER nurse at the hospital in Pebble Beach that saw me after my accident. I figured that was a pretty good recommendation and the office saw me ASAP and got me into surgery to repair my broken clavicle just 2 days later. I am very pleased with Dr. Aptekar and the surgery and also very pleased with my PT with Diana and Lori. I have healed fast and have great range of motion after just 5 weeks. read more

This review is about Maryanna who is in charge of helping? patients with workers comp issues. I was referred to the clinic in september and have been seeing Dr. Sagoo. He is wonderful and caring and I cant say enough good about him. Unfortunately Maryanna leaves alot to be desired. I first problem is the whole phone system is completely automated so it takes forever to get a human to speak to. This Maryanna has never responded to one of my voicemails until I complained to ther office manager. Because of her, my Physical therapy has been delayed unnessarily. I saw Dr. Sagoo on November 4, and he wrote out a prescription for additional physical therapy and I was told Maryanna would notify me when the authorization was sent and complete. As of November 20th I had heard nothing. I left her another voicemail asking for an update. I heard nothing so I called the office to speak with the office manager again, she apoligized and put me on hold for 20 minutes. She finally came back and apoligized again and said that Maryanna would call me!!!! And so she did, only to leave me a sarcastic message stating that she had faxed the request for authorization three times in september and I could call her if I had questions!!! So I called the office again and it went to her voicemail again. I called the office manager again and told her I had been calling about the November authorizatin not the september one,( that was already complete, no thanks to Maryanna). The office manager assured me someone would call me back. I finally get a voicemail back from none other than miss Maryanna herself and she apoligizes for the office dropping the ball!! but never once did she apoligize for herself, since she is the one who messed everything up. This woman is of no help. If I treated any of my customers that badly and didnt call anybody back, I'd be fired. She is dealing with patients who are sick and or hurting and need help in a quick and efficient way. I love Dr. Sagoo but once Im done with this workers comp issue I won't ever be going back or recommending them. Too bad the rotten apple Maryanna spoiled the whole office. read more
