I honestly don't understand all the bad reviews about Golden State orthopedics…read more I came in today for the first time. I had an appointment to see Dr. Nathaniel Cohen at 1:45 pm. I showed up 1/2 hour early to fill out the paperwork and was greeted right away by one of the 3 receptionist. The receptionist also helped helped me fill out the paperwork as I had some questions. WHAT WAS GREAT ABOUT THE VISIT #1. My appointment was for 1:45 and they called me in to see the doctor right at 1:45 "no wait. "And there was like 20 people in the waiting room" #2. The doctors assistant asked me why I was there and took notes while listening intently. #3. About 15 minutes later Doctor Cohan came in after reviewing my MRI cd, the 4 page MRI write up and looking up information about my case in doctors journals as it is unusual. He then asked me to describe my pain level, what happened, what I was feeling etc, etc. He asked me questions like who is the surgeon who made the recommendation for surgery and was perplexed by what I told him because for the most part surgery is not possible. When I told him the surgeons name who made the recommendations Dr. Cohan became even more perplexed as the surgeon is a very well known and knowledgeable surgeon in the medical community. So he asked me more questions and even called the surgeon to speak with him and "unfortunately the surgeon was out of the office" try to get to the bottom of the confusion. After Dr. Cohan examined me and we spoke more, he was able to ascertain why he believed that the surgeon was recommending surgery for me and believed that if he is correct then he would also recommend getting the surgery. What struck me about Dr. Cohan was that after he had looked at the results of the MRI's and talking with me; he was not sure of a proper course of action and that he told me that he did not know everything. "Now to me this is a sign of a great doctor who is also humble" (instead of coming to a conclusion and possibly giving me misinformation, (like my GP) he chose to say I don't know!, now that's a good doctor!!!) He told me to make another appointment with the surgeon and wrote down for me what to ask him specifically. He then said that if the surgeon confirmed what Dr. Cohan told me to ask him, that I should have the surgery performed. (Here is an Orthopedic surgeon telling me that the other surgeon is more capable to perform this specific surgery... I mean wow!) All I got to say is Dr. Cohan obviously cares about his patients!!! Dr. Cohan, you are the best!! Thank you for your kindness, bedside manner, honesty, compassion and concern for your patients. #4. He even gave me a referral to another GP!! And told me to call him if I had other questions about anything. 5 stars is an understatement! Everything about this office is 5 stars including the receptionist. Again I really don't understand the bad reviews.

My partner came here for a consult last year in February. He had spinal stenosis and degenerative…read morediscs and was tired of being in pain. We met with Dr. Gadvani and his staff who were very professional. The doctor gave a detailed overview of the surgery (spinal fusion surgery and replacement of 3 discs) and said he'd be up and walking and out of the hospital in one or two nights, starting physical therapy within a couple months and back to his normal activities and pain free etc. He decided to go ahead with the surgery as we really believed back surgery had come a long way after speaking with the doctor and he gave us a lot of confidence in his ability. The first sign things weren't as they seemed was he definitely could not leave the hospital in one or two days. It was two weeks in the acute care center next door before he could be released and be able to get up and go to the bathroom and take basic care of himself he was in such terrible shape and intense pain. What followed were months of following everything he was supposed to be doing (physical therapy outpatient and inpatient, wearing a special belt to help the bone regrow around the surgery area etc. Fast forward to now (some 18 months later) and the surgery was a complete failure. He's in more pain now than before and his quality of life keeps diminishing. His back is weak and he has constant pain. After going to every meeting with him and seeing this clinic it seems they really just funnel as many people as they possibly can through here. I don't feel they are forthright in some of the consequences of what happens if this surgery fails and give unrealistic expectations of recovery times and results of spinal fusion surgery. We have chosen to not go back here and try and deal with his issues as a result of this surgery elsewhere.

On July 18, 2026, my mother had a hip pinning surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital . Looking at the…read moreX-ray taken after the surgery by Dr. Peter Kim indicated that the surgery was performed successfully, with care and precision. However, ultimately, the post-operative care of Dr. Kim has caused far more harm than good in my mother's recovery process. After her transfer to a rehabilitation hospital, we learned that the post-operative order left by our surgeon were confusing and even contradictory, stating that she should be doing both "50/50" and "toe touch." Since the physical therapist was confused by his instructions, they attempted to contact the surgeon to gain further clarification. The physical therapist also asked me to also follow up with the surgeon, noting that at times they can be more responsive to the patient's concerns. I called the surgeon's office three times and, after four days of waiting, finally received a phone call from an office assistant. She said that the order was for 50/50 and the toe touch was wrong. I asked her to call the rehabilitation hospital to communicate these instructions to our physical therapist. The assistant replied that the rehabilitation hospital might not answer as it was 5 pm but I asked her to please leave a message and I gave her our physical therapist's name. To this day, I do not know whether a phone call was made or not. I tried to relay the information myself in an email to the rehab hospital. As the result of this information, my mother's therapy changed to walking rehab while experiencing excruciating pain. She had been experiencing great pain even while seated on the wheelchair for any period of time. On the morning of Thursday July 30th, we were informed that she had an appointment at 11:15 with the surgeon. She was to be taken to the surgeon's office with a wheelchair transport. I had never heard that a patient after surgery must be taken to the surgeon's office. I assumed that the surgeon would come to the patient. The ride -- though secure -- was difficult and painful for her. When we arrived at the surgeon's office, our appointment was 15 minutes late. Finally, once the appointment began, I handed the comprehensive report on my mother's surgery and rehabilitation (sent with us from the rehab hospital) but the assistant did not even look at the document. He then proceeded to ask us very basic questions making it evident that he did not know that there was any surgery performed, what type of surgery. In an off-handed way, he asked whether my mother was experiencing pain and when she answered that she had been and continues to be in extreme pain, he was surprised. His surprise was shocking to us given that she had been sitting in the wheelchair for almost an hour at this point and was not at a place in her recovery to sit comfortably for extended periods of time. He then said that he needed to remove the sutures from her leg. Astonished, I looked at the wooden, fixed-position examination bed situated in the room. The bed was 36 inches high with a small footstool next to it to allow the patient to climb atop it. I told him that my mother could not stand and climb atop that bed in her current condition. He said he would remove the stitches while she was seated on the wheelchair. I explained that she needed assistance to stand up to take off the pants in order to sit back down on the wheelchair for the suture removal. I also stated that her adult diaper needed to be opened to reach the sutures. The assistant looked shocked. He did not help to get her up and watched as my mother and I struggled to get her standing to pull down the pants. After checking the sutures, he left the room and came back with the surgeon. The surgeon arrived and looking at the sutures said to us, "you didn't need to come in for this, the nurses at the rehabilitation hospital could have removed them. They can stay in for another two weeks." I asked him if he had visited my mother since the surgery and he said no. So, it had been 13 days since her surgery and he had not ever visited with the patient. This means that the surgery rounds at the hospital were never made. I asked him about the about the accommodations offered for patients and he said if you wanted her to be laying down then you should have arrived on a gurney. I replied that I was not aware that a surgeon's office would not have accommodations available for patients. Overall, I'm writing this to inform others about the mistreatment that my mother received at Golden State Orthopedics and Spine by Dr. Paul Kim. Unfortunately, as a result of Dr. Kim's and his assistant's negligence in conveying incorrect information, my mother's recovery and rehabilitation has been set back quite a bit, causing her excess and unnecessary pain. I hope that by sharing our story, we can advocate for better treatment of my mother and other patients like her.

Early September 2019 I suffered herniated discs at L4 and L5 which sent me to emergency at Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Gatos, in excruciating pain, barely able to walk. Due to the severity of my symptoms, the neurosurgeon that saw me that night recommended that I go immediately into surgery for a laminectomy and discectomy to remove pressure created by the ruptured discs on my spinal cord (cauda equina), fearing that if they didn't relieve the pressure I could be paralyzed and lose the use of my legs. Fortunately, my case was borderline enough that I was able to leave the hospital after signing a release of liability, and promise that I would see a neurosurgeon within 12-hours. The next day my GP sent my MRIs to three neurosurgeons and an orthopedic surgeon for consultation. All four of whom wanted me back in the hospital for the surgery that day! Well, the way the "system" works, the surgeon had to send a request to my medical insurance provider for "approval" of the procedures. During which few days I was referred to Dr. Millard, who made room in his schedule to see me almost immediately. While Dr. Millard was testing (my left foot was so weak it was starting to drag on the floor with each step I took with my "walker") he observed that during that 2-3-day period it appeared that I had regained a bit of strength in my left big toe. Dr. Millard said this was "rare" but that he had seen this before, and thus, recommended I get into Stanford Hospital the next day for the cortisone epidural procedure he has expertise in implementing. (Figuring that the above-mentioned surgery would still be an option if the epidural injection of cortisone and other medicines did not work). It was a VERY painful procedure, but it worked! It was a slow recovery at first. Flat on my back in bed for 1-2 weeks while constantly icing the area of the injury, and taking strong anti-inflammatory and pain meds. I was wheelchair-bound for about six weeks, which experience gave me a whole new "perspective" and appreciation for good health, and empathy for those persons wheelchair-bound for life. Went from wheelchair to using a "walker" during the first couple of months. Then physical therapy, and after awhile I was able to walk (again) on my own. At my first post-procedure exam Dr. Millard observed that I had improved so well that I might not need another epidural procedure, which is typically required every six months to a year. Within 2-3 months I was walking normally again. Then longer walks, and by summer 2020, just nine (9) months later, I was hiking again. And by May 2021, 18-months after the injury and Dr. Millard's procedure, I was able to enjoy a full-day of Spring skiing at Mammoth Mountain (that first night in the hospital I was told that I might not ever "walk" again, let alone hike, jog, and ski!). Now, two and a half years later, I am 90% recovered, doing strenuous 5-10 mile hikes in steep hills on weekends, with some jogging, and flat-out running again! Had I had the surgeries that the four surgeons were pushing for I doubt that I would have ever been the "same" as before, again. In fact, I have spoken with others that had those surgeries and the majority said they were worse off, thereafter. So, it is a MIRACLE that I was referred to Dr. Millard, and that his treatment worked so well for me! I appreciate EVERY DAY that I can go about an active life, enjoying the hikes, runs, and activities that I always have. Dr. Millard is The Very Best in his field. I strongly recommend that you see him before making any decisions regarding your spine, if you can... John C.

Second, and the reason I'm writing this years later: at one visit he walked in and, completely out of nowhere, asked me if I'd heard the news about Huawei, and he asked me "You don't work for them right?" as a joke. I've had a complex set of issues that have exacerbate each other and Dr Vaughn is the second specialist I've gone to specifically for my knee. He listened and while I am not magically all better he gave me the feedback about what I could/should do and didn't try to sell me something.
