Dr Barrett explained the recovery process for my Achilles tear, provided the orthopedic boot, inserts, and Even Ups, checked up on progress, referred me to a nearby physical therapist, and so far my recovery has been going well. He provided a sheet with the typical schedule for the progression, though it is bit hard to read since it has medical terminology. It would be great if there was a brochure or "how to" guide on the recovery process with simple, clear explanations, practical tips (like getting a knee scooter) etc. read more

Always get a second opinion before making a health decision! I had received a " boxer fracture". More specifically, it is a fracture of the neck of the fifth metacarpal (a bone in the "pinky finger") I was upfront with Dr. Barrett about the expectations I had for my hand post recovery(I'm a rock climber/musician and laborer) and that if surgery was the best option than that would be the route I would rather take. He said my hand was within the range of "acceptable deformation " and assured me that surgery would not be necessary. He tried to manipulate the broken bones by hand and then put on a perm at cast and told me to come back in 4 weeks. 4 weeks later we removed the cast The swelling was gone by this point but at the site of the break there was a "peak" pushing my skin up like a tent. I questioned Barrett about the likely hood of my hand being able to function to my expectations and he still stood his ground. He told me to use it lightly for 3 weeks and then return for another follow up. That this point I had already made up my mind to seek another professional opinion. I went to a hand specialist in San Francisco and he basically told me that I should have gotten surgery at the time of the break. No questions asked. He said that because my bone had broken in the middle, the amount of potential displacement increased drastically. He said if I left my had as is I would never have normal functionality again. I booked surgery with him that week. We had to re break the bone and straighten it out with metal pins. I am currently in recovery now read more

I experienced pain at both my knees, and was referred to Dr. Barrett by my family doctor. He diagnosed my condition as minor Arthritis from age. The solution can be Corticosteroids, Hyaluronic Acid, or Platelet Rich Plasma. Pro and Con was explained for each treatment and additional information was given for consideration. One week later I decided to try Hyaluronic Acid and got appointment right away. This treatment requires injections for 3 consecutive weeks. Now it is one month after the procedures was done, I felt much better and pain free. Hope it will last long time. Doctor Barrett is relatively a young doctor, very personal, and strikes me as a smart person. The staff at his clinic is very professional, and no wait time for all my appointments so far. I had a very unfortunate experience at Modern Orthopedics. Last month I injured my finger, went to urgent care the following day, and had x-rays done which confirmed I had multiple fractures. The UC doc recommended I see an orthopedic doctor as soon as possible. I called Modern Orthopedics the next day, explained my situation, and they said they'd fit me in at the end of the day -- great, I thought! I drove over 1.5 hrs one way to this office due to the high ratings and their flexibility in seeing me the same day. When I arrived, one of the receptionists asked which doctor I was there to see. I said I wasn't sure since I was being fit in at the end of the day. The other gal sharply said "no we don't have anyone else scheduled on here". I was instantly filled with panic that I had misunderstood on the phone and driven all that way for nothing. They were indeed able to find me, stating they didn't initially see me because I had 'just been added to the system' whatever that means, since I made the appointment at 9 am that morning, but I digress. As I waited to be seen, my second sign that something was amiss was the "leave us a 5 star review and get a free baseball cap" display... luring people with freebies... got it. So anyway I get called back and the doctor comes in shortly thereafter with another man with him who he did not introduce to me and who appeared to be in, for lack of better words, layman's clothes. I have no idea who that was nor was I asked if I was comfortable with someone else being there. The doctor immediately says, "so what makes you think you dislocated your finger?" Confused, I respond with, it's not dislocated, I've fractured it in a few places. He says well that's not what my record says. Lol ok..? He then asks if I have a CD with X-rays. I said no, I emailed the three x-ray files I got from urgent care to the front desk staff at 9 am. He pulls up one file and says he only sees one fracture. Tells me to order some contraption off Amazon but not to wear it the way the instructions say to wear it. Says I'll have to order it because they don't have any in office since he "doesn't really do fingers". If you don't "do" fingers, why'd your office set me up with an appointment then? I asked if he could look at the additional x-ray files because the UC doc insisted there were multiple fractures -- Dr Ian brushed it off and said he doesn't need to see the other files. I then left. In the 45 seconds it took for me to walk from the exam room back up to the front desk, I heard the doctor say loudly to reception, "ok I'm outta here!" It immediately clicked that he had clearly been itching to go home. Fair, but dismissive. I scheduled a follow-up knowing quite well that I wouldn't actually be returning. I decided to seek a second opinion and saw a hand specialist at Stanford who was excellent. They took additional x-rays there and without me mentioning my experience with Dr. Ian, she pointed out the *multiple* fractures and explained them to me as she discussed a treatment plan which did not involve me having to order something off Amazon. Overall, I felt uncared for and quite honestly coned out of a $45 copay. Maybe if you have a non-finger injury and a non-last-minute-squeezed-in appointment you might have a better experience than I did. read more

I saw Dr. Barrett after dislocating my shoulder for the second time. Dr. Barrett performed a minimally invasive surgery and my shoulder has been stable since then. I've been able to perform most daily tasks 3 months after the surgery and continuing to improve in terms of range of motion and strength. The staff is also very helpful and friendly. I was provided clear instructions before and after the surgery. read more

I was hit by a car, with the result of dislocating my shoulder and deeply bruising my right leg. So I've only just begun the process to repair the damage... Dr Barrett was called in at the hospital after the arm fell out of joint for a second time after the original reduction. He was able to do a closed reduction where the hospital staff were stymied, and warned me that the joint needed some internal repair. He and his staff at Modern Orthopedics have been beyond excellent help through the beginnings of this process, including ironing out some truly crazy issues with the imaging company, etc. I'm very happy to work with Dr Barrett and his staff through the coming shoulder repairs, healing, and restoration to normal life... :D read more

I am not giving a review about the office, ONLY the SURGEON Ian Barrett. I came through the ER of Elcamino Mountain View with a broken leg, was assigned 2 surgeons, him and another. I was told that the operation would be around 10am and that the surgeon would see me before. Then it was going to be between 12 and 2pm. Then a slot apparently opened around 11am. I didn't see him before 1pm. No detailed explanation about my fracture, no X-ray picture shown to me. I will have 4 pins and a second surgery next week. Ok but I don't want to have any metal in my leg long term speaking. He asks why and when I tell him that my brother who's a physical therapist recommended me to remove everything after a year or so, he laughs and says that he doesn't see why, titanium is the best thing for the human body... well it is my leg so we'll see later. When I wake up in the recovery room I panick I don't remember anything, he's here and he manages to ask me hubby's phone number. He said to him that everything went well during surgery. I am discharged a few hours later but if I bleed again I have to call the service. Next morning huge blood stain, I call like 5 people to try to reach him, I am finally directed to the next ER. He's warned there and joins me, says to me that I must not be the fast healing type, lifts my leg with my external rods while changing the dressings and doesn't understand why it is painful for me. When he is finished he leaves but I am so in pain that I have to ask for morphine (and I'm breastfeeding so I didn't want to at all). No bleeding, until I come home and my dressings are soaked up again during the day. My husband changes them at night with some gauze that dr Barrett gave me " in case ", it is complicated and hubby doesn't feel good seeing the pins coming out of my flesh... Next day I have a post op appointment with the other surgeon who is surprised I hadn't seen any pictures of my fracture, he explains everything, says that my bleeding is NORMAL because the pin bleeding is the closest to the fracture, he changes the dressings AGAIN (and this time would be the last until the next operation 4days later), and he recommends that I REMOVE everything metallic in my leg in a few years ! We were ready to make a scandal as we were so disappointed with the care given until then, but the professionalism and kindness of this other surgeon gave us hope. I told him how I felt with Dr Barrett and he assured me him and his team only would take care of me. I was finally seen as a human being and not a case number... Never seen again Dr Barrett but if so I won't be afraid to tell him everything I think of him !! For information the other surgeon is Dr Yamamoto, HE is the REAL deal. read more

Following months of a great deal of pain and restriction of movement from severe arthritic degeneration, I had a reverse shoulder arthroscopy followed by several months of physiotherapy. Recommended injection vs oral variant to gain results faster which was my preferred choice since I was experiencing extreme pain. This is my second review for Dr. Barrett and his team at Modern Orthopedics. Dr. Barrett's level of knowledge and the care provided by him and the team is a splendid surprise every visit. I am 63, newly diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in my right knee. Dr. Barrett explained my options, answered all my questions, addressed all my concerns, and I chose to a began treatment with a PRP injection in my knee as it seemed the least drastic option. Dr. Barrett and his team offered me the greatest level of care that anyone could have asked for with it being my first surgery post military separation. Starting off, I fractured my clavicle in two places after a bicycle accident on Thursday, and they were able to get me in the very next day for a consultation. Due to the severity of the fracture, surgery was the only option and I wanted it done as soon as possible as I am a very active person. During my visit, Dr. Barrett broke down all the facts in a way that was very easy to understand without any medical knowledge. He explained the earlier potential time to be able to perform the surgery and was even able to get me in a day earlier, for which I was very grateful. The surgery went without any single issue and I was able to begin my recovery process which is still going on but I am almost back to being able to do everything I was before. My post-op follow ups have been great with more thorough explanations of what stages of healing I am in and what to expect in the near future. The physical therapy protocol was a little conservative for me as I healed faster than expected but Dr. Barrett was very understanding and offered more information on what I could/couldn't do. His team was also extremely kind of helpful. Any questions I had, they were able to answer or put me in contact with Dr. Barrett when he had time. Additionally, as this was my first time having surgery as a civilian, they helped me with my disability claims with a smile on their faces. I have been seeing Dr. Barrett for a year. I first started seeing him at his Advanced Surgical Associates office located in the Regional Medical Center. I was referred for chronic knee pain; he quickly addressed my concerns and ordered physical therapy and an MRI as well as offering further treatments for my pain. Unfortunately and unrelated to my chronic pain, I ended up with an ACL injury requiring surgery and more advanced care. Thankfully, I already had my care established with Dr. Barrett. I began seeing him at his Modern Orthopedics office following my injury and what a world of difference!!! Dr. Barrett and his staff at Modern Orthopedics have made a very difficult time in my life less stressful with their transparency, helpfulness, scheduling, easy to follow & understand pre-op and post-op paperwork, communication, support, and compassion. The staff at Modern Orthopedics really deserve all the praise, together with Dr. Barrett they are a fine tuned, highly functioning team. In the world of healthcare where things are confusing, frustrating, and often not designed to be easy, the staff at Modern Orthopedics has truly made the difference. I have always felt heard while being a patient with Dr. Barrett at either office, he takes the time to listen to my complaints and address them promptly and accurately. He has been very patient with this patient when I have had many questions or have even changed my mind regarding treatments presented.
