The office is fairly clean and the front desk team was polite. The check in went smoothly and I didnt have to wait too long in the lobby which I appreciated. The staff seemed to know their routine well and guided me through the visit. The doctor came in after a short while and was calm and soft spoken. They asked a good amount of questions about how I've been feeling lately and seemed to be listening. It didn't feel rushed which I've experienced at other offices before. They went over some health history with me and looked over notes I brought along from a past visit to a different clinic. There was a bit of a delay in getting a follow up plan but overall the conversation was helpful. The assistant who walked me out was courteous and made sure I knew where to go next. I broke my fibula at the ankle just before Christmas. Dr. Semkiw saw me a couple of days later, and two days later he installed a Titanium plate over the fracture. And it was proven that I had made a best decision for my medical need. He's knowledgeable, confident and very sincere. I have had a lot of repair done over the years from accidents in the military etc. Every time I would have weeks of painful recovery and physical therapy. Then I injured my left knee somehow and my regular doctor recommended Doctor Semkiw. He did not jump to any conclusion on the first visit. Just that there was good spacing and that I should go for an MRI. So I had a bad complex tear and I was really afraid that this would not turn out well. Doctor Semkiw fixed my knee with three little holes. I was walking on it without assistance in 1 day. I was back at work in four days. No physical therapy was needed. Much better than the other doctors I have used in the past. If I ever need a repair (knee, shoulder, hip...), I am going back to Doctor Semkiw. At the five month mark, I can now ride my motorcycle again and I walk every day for about two miles -- no pain!!. Going back to Yellowstone this year and don't have to bring pain pills this time. I first visit Dr. Semkiw in 1999 when I dislocated my left knee, he preformed arthroscopic surgery and I was back playing soccer. He did informed to take it easy and not to play everyday because our body gets adapted to the pain, and I will put more pressure on my healthy leg. Of course my love for the game didn't stop, I continued playing 3-4 times a week on the outdoor an indoor leagues. In 2005 I dislocate my right knee, I went back to Dr. Semkiw and I did an MRI on both knees, he told me both my ACL are torn. That was a time I had to retire my soccer cleats and focus on my knees. Dr. Semkiw was very knowledgeable and walked me thru the Pros and Cons, he also gave me the option if I wanted to do a cadaver or patellar tendon graft. Since I had to do both knees I decided to use cadaver on my left knee and patellar on my right knees. I had my first shingles vaccine and after 8 weeks I still had shoulder pain and limited range of motion so I called Dr. Semkiw's office for consultation. I received excellent service from the initial call to Dr.'s visit. I called on a Tuesday and despite the schedule being fully booked on Friday, the receptionist asked the doctor if he could accommodate me since I had pain. And indeed the doctor said 'yes' and was even willing to see me at 8am. Upon arrival to my appt, I was greeted at the front desk with a friendly smile. I have been here for four times and didn't have a good impression about this place. Wait time was about 40 min and got to see the dr for about 5 min. For the fourth appointment, I had to just come back home because THE APPOINTMENT CLERK FORGOT TO PUT MY SON IN THE SCHEDULE. At first, she made it sound like we were there without an appointment. I took my 6 yo son to Dr. Semkiw for a second opinion on his broken arm. Thank goodness I did! Dr. Semkiw's staff was very helpful and accommodated us with an appointment. The first orthopedist my son saw, was just going to put a cast on his arm. After personally seeing the xray and my gut feeling, I knew he needed more than just a cast. Dr. Semkiw looked over my sons xray and recommended surgery to place some pins in his humerus/elbow because his bone was not only fractured but displaced as well. He was very thorough with what to expect prior, during, and after the procedure. He answered all my questions and concerns, yet he was also very patient with me. My main concern was the fact that they would have to give him general anesthesia and he would have to be put to sleep for the procedure. He assured me that everything will be fine and that the anesthesiologist will be contacting me prior to discuss the whole thing. I decided to go ahead with the procedure, so his office staff was able to schedule my son for his surgery 2 days later. Long story short, everything went very well! The whole staff, Dr. Semkiw, and the surgical center were on top of everything. After 4 weeks my son got his cast off yesterday and healing just as he expected. Dr. Semkiw is great with kids! Dr Semkiw did an arthroscopy surgery on my knee. He is probably a good surgeon. However, I would not recommend him to anyone because of the following. Since the surgery, I have switched doctors because I lost confidence in him and I deeply regret agreeing to the procedure. 1. Based on expert opinion, I am not convinced my surgery had high probability of resolving my issue at all. 2. Dr Semkiw either did not know or at least did not warn me of possible negative outcomes of the procedure, other than possible infection. 3. Setting expectations to what is to happen after surgery, before the operation, as well as explaining to me the reasons for the knee's state, few weeks after, was unrealistic (runner returned to running days after surgery), non existent (why is my knee still swollen?) or seriously lacking, day and night compared with my current physician. 4. Dr Semkiw told me there are "no restrictions" on physical activities few days after surgery and "no pain no gain" few weeks after that. This is in complete contradiction to what my current doctor is saying and, in fact, some activity might actually cause lasting damage. 5. Dr Semkiw gave me pills which I suspected to have side effect of sleeping problems. I asked him about it and he said they will not. This was in contradiction to what the pharmacist told me. read more

I had a worn out knee cartilage and was looking for an Orthopedic Surgeon to make sure everything goes well. My best source was my family doctor of over 30 years, Dr. Fredrick Benson. I got my Total Knee Replacement surgery done by Dr. Semkiw at Goodsam Hospital. The second day of my surgery I walk 300 feet in Hospital. The heeling of incision was within two weeks. First few days I took only Advil for pain. It is a month now and I can walk for few miles without problem. I highly recommend Dr. Semkiw as he is great surgeon. If I have to get my second knee surgery, I will go there again. I should also appreciate his staff members Roseline and Sabrina and others. The lobby is pleasant, with a nice plasma screen TV...I wish they had more of a variety of magazines, but that doesn't have anything to do with the quality of care you will receive in the office! I consulted Dr. Semkiw regarding an escalating shoulder cuff problem. The office visits were always on time, he and his staff were very professional and addressed all of my concerns. The X-Rays of my hips showed the cause of my pain: Over time, when walking, my length of stride diminished and ordinary walking became a very painful experience. I would walk a bit, then stop, then restart walking when the pain diminished somewhat only to have it reoccur. This situation needed to be addressed, and I learned that full relief would only come with both hips replaced. My right hip was the worst and I decided to have surgery on that one. Surgery was mid-December, 2014 I researched total hip replacement and surgeons in the South Bay. After careful review, I chose Dr. Leo Semkiw to perform the surgery. It is almost five months since I had my right hip replacement surgery. Surgery was done after I was given a spinal injection to block pain, and also an anesthetic. Recovery from them was uneventful. I was in the hospital for two nights. Recovery and exercises began while there, and continued at home with physical therapy. I had no pain, just soreness and weakness in the hip and buttock areas at the site of the surgery which gradually diminished as the tissue healed. I needed no pain medication while at home (I don't know what I may have been given at the hospital). Following the doctors orders and physical therapy, I became stronger by the week. I began using a walker at the start. The walker was replaced with a cane. After a while, I needed no cane and home physical therapist. Later, I began to drive. It is now nearly five months since the surgery. I can walk miles without pain. I've had no problems with the right hip surgical implants Dr. Semkiw used, which are a new hip socket (metal with plastic liner), femur-inserted stem and attached ball (both metal). The doctor's work is superb. An added bonus is his responsive staff. From my experience, I recommend Dr. Semkiw for joint replacement surgery based on my own hip replacement experience. I assume his approach and caring style extend to other joint repair and replacement needs. I think anyone with a joint problem should consult with his office. Mike R. read more

To preface this review I will tell you I have never been seen by this office. I called to get my daughter in who has two fractures in her arm. My Dr. gave me two referrals. After reading the Yelp reviews I called this office. I was put on on hold twice for over 7 minutes only to be told that they did not have any appointments for a week. I let them know it was urgent as my daughters arm is broken and they said sorry, nothing open until June 6. My preschool age son was treated by Dr. Semkiw more than 20 years ago here in Illinois. He reset my child's badly broken elbow, and the results were much better than we had been told were originally possible. When I lifted my son, Dr. Semkiw inquired about how I had broken my own arm - an injury that occurred when I was very young like my son.
