Summer 2023 the doctor and his PA Robin Mercer assessed my situation and helped me plan for my TKR (total knee replacement). I planned a six month light work out to gain strength before the surgery. This whole experience has been amazing. I'm not sure what could have been better. The entire surgical team is absolutely the best. The day of the surgery was easy. I had only a week or so of walker and pain killers, after that it was just Tylenol and walking unassisted. Dr. Salyapongse performed knee surgery on me exactly one year ago. I had a full knee replacement. It was in very bad shape and other doctors told me because of the way my knee bent in, surgery would be challenging. The surgery went so well, I was walking the day of the surgery, physical therapy started the next day, after being prescribed 20 tablets of pain medication, I took only 3, and after six weeks I had virtually no hint (pain wise) that I even had knee surgery. A year later I am doing great . . . again with what I think is a perfect knee. Dr. Salyapongse is terrific. I highly recommend him and his team. read more

Dr. Salypongse is an amazing surgeon. I had 2 hip replacements. One was performed by another doctor who used the anterior (posterior) method of surgery. There were many precautions that one needed to follow. There were many many exercises that needed to be performed many times a day. With this method of surgery, I had a hip dislocation that was excruciating. An ambulance picked me up and took me directly to the ER. The next hip replacement surgery was performed by Dr. Salypongse. His method of surgery was performed anterior (frontal). There was very little pain, minimal, if any precautions, and no regimen of exercises to be performed every few hours. Beside being an incredibly great surgeon, he is exceptionally personable and takes time with all of this patients. His schedule can be a bit booked up, but wait for the appointment. I suffered from "bone on bone" arthritis in my knee for years. I had developed a deep curve in my leg as a result of the arthritis, which caused my ankle to pronate causing severe pain and difficulty walking. Dr. Salyapongse performed a total right knee replacement 8 weeks ago. As a result of his expertise, my knee is now completely straight, I have zero pain and can now walk, climb stairs and live a "normal" with no pain. I have complete mobility and my "new knee" feels as if it is the knee I was born with. At 44 my hips were so bad I could barely walk. It was a struggle just getting through the day. My Dr make a couple recommendations but she highly recommended Dr Salyapongse. Outside having a family it was the best choice I've ever made. Substantially overweight (315)he encouraged me to loose some weight so that I would be able to have an anterior hip replacement. 25 lbs later we scheduled the first surgery. 5 weeks after that we did the second. I recently had a knee replacement by another surgeon in his former group, Golden State Orthopedics (previously Webster) The difference in care, including the in-home PT I was referred to was astounding. I accomplished in 3 1/2 weeks what took months after surgery performed by Dr Salypongse on my other knee 2 years ago. I never saw Dr Salypongse after surgery. His PA is nice enough, but obviously practiced cookie cutter medicine when you look at her after visit notes which had no mention of my issues and I was eventually referred to pain management. Dr. Salyapongse did my revision hip replacement surgery in October, 2023. About 2 years prior to this revision surgery I injured my hip playing tennis. After attempting rehab, I decided to get my hip replaced by a highly regarded local surgeon. Unfortunately, the outcome couldn't have been worse and resulted in leg pain, making it difficult to move around easily and prevented me from resuming my active lifestyle. Dr. Salyaponge was highly recommended by a number of friends. Prior to our initial meeting, he carefully reviewed my surgery history, so at our meeting he was able to describe in detail how my hip could be fixed and what the risks were. Although this surgery was much more complex than my prior 2 surgeries, the outcome could not have been better. Immediately after surgery, all my leg pain was gone. I had virtually no surgery pain or swelling and was walking around without a walker or cane within 2 weeks. After 3 months, playing golf regularly and looking forward to getting my full strength back so I can resume all my old activities. My Total Hip Replacement Journey: I am Dr. Judith Gayle Olund, having earned my Doctorate Degree in Organizational Leadership in year 2012; however, today I will share with you a much more personal journey - my decision for a total hip replacement. Over my past 70 years, I have enjoyed a wonderfully active life that began with dancing lessons as a young child and have continuously enjoyed all physical activities throughout the years; even until most recently often dancing at the local pub Friday and Satuturday nights for two to three hours straight. So yes, I ignored my slow but sure developing limp (over at least five years) and was finally diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my hips over one year ago (bone-on-bone). Finally I had a checkup with my general doctor Dr. Calvin Lei at Stanford Health Care in Pleasanton, California. We discussed my walking issue which resulted in a referral to my now orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Aaron Salyapongse of Webster Orthopedics in Dublin, California; however, after my first consultation with the surgeon...I remained very hesitant. Maybe all I needed was a shoe lift - funny how we rationalize when we just aren't certain about things. A few days after a follow-up blood test by Dr. Raj, I unexpectedly received a phone call from Dr. Salyapongse's office saying that I had been approved for total hip replacement surgery and was asked if I would like to schedule a date for surgery. I was definitely in shock...expecting to have months to reconsider surgery. I was then offered a surgery date in just two weeks which had opened up due to a cancellation. If I had not secured this opening, I would have had a month wait for surgery....that is, if I had decided to go ahead. We penciled in the date. Two weeks. So...because I was instructed not to take NSAIDS for ten days prior to surgery, I quickly realized how those little pills were actually masking my discomfort to a reasonable degree - more than I thought. By day eight without pills, I was reaching for the walls in my home (not wanting to put weight on my left hip); and, I was also compensating for my diminished hip movements by over-using my right knee which was becoming notably over worked. It was my time. I had a choice. Show up Wednesday morning for surgery, or go shopping for a cane and hideout more at home. Paperwork complete, it was now time - my time. I was escorted down the hall to the pre-op section and quickly asked to take two pills. I followed instructions and swallowed. Okay, I was then given my hospital gown, toothbrush, toothpaste, non-skid yellow socks to wear, and then asked to change and go potty; also, to brush teeth. Now it was time to get comfortable on the bed. So, I did. Three pre-op nurses were soon hovering over me -- each doing their task including the IV, asking many questions, and establishing monitors and so forth. Soon the medical team and my family surrounded me. Dr. Salyapongse, my surgeon, now in his light blue scrubs was asking me what procedure he was about to perform on me. I replied, "A total left hip replacement, anterior approach, 4 inch incision, then moving the muscles with your fingers giving access to the ball to be sawed off, which made way to the socket area which would be replaced with new materials; then a "test" implant (to hold the new ceramic ball) would be fitted before implanting the permanent titanium implant. ***** After surgery: No pain. No nausea. No dizziness. I took one pain pill as more of a precautionary measure by end of day one. I was up and walking shortly after surgery to go potty (using a walker primarily to prevent any falls). Day one after surgery: No real pain. I called it my "brick leg" but no pain. I was up and walking (using a walker primarily to prevent any possible falls). Day two after surgery: I returned home, remade my new bed downstairs, and went upstairs for a shower. Nice. No pain. I am presently enjoying my recovery time (Day 6) and continuing to take meds for continued healing and good health. I feel amazing. No more anguish when I walk. Of course as to be expected...I will continue with healing and adjusting to my new life, my new hip, and my new excellent mobility. Dr. Salyapongse was the first name recommended by each of the three doctors who I asked for referrals. But he was always out of network...until this year! I had tkr on my right leg 5/15/20. The surgery went smoothly despite the constantly changing effects that COVID had on planning elective surgeries. I had met Dr. S on Zoom and his cheerful can-do attitude put any unease I had at not meeting in person to rest. He is a contagiously positive person with lots of energy, for sure. I met Dr. Aaron Salyapongse at a program discussing TKR, after that talk I knew that he would preform my TKR at some point, just didn't know when. He would always say you will let me know when; that changed one day when he told me it was going to be now. So in November of 2011, I had my TKR at his special replay area area within Stanford Valley Care in Pleasaton. It was a life changing time for me and my fifth knee surgery on my right knee. Eight years later I'm still thrilled that I had it done and that Dr. Salyapongse is simply the best person for the job. When I see some people's scare after their TKR and compare with mine, I know that work was done my a true skilled, knowledgeable professional, a rock star in his field. He is the best orthopedic surgeon I have ever had, his team including the outstanding Robin Mercer, make a difficult and painful experience seem like a piece of cake. He and his team are very responsive - I had small issue after being released and not only did they fix the issue, they did it quickly and with compassion. My father had two hip related surgeries in 2015 (he was 87 at the time). The first was a hip replacement, the second was a repair to the femur and hip after he suffered a second break. The odds of a positive outcome from this type of surgery on a patient of my dad's age/condition were pretty low. Dr Salyapongse handled the second surgery. I'll just fast forward to today, about 6 months after Dr. Salyapongse his surgery. While my dad isn't walking on his own (he really wasn't walking on his own after the first hip surgery, so we didn't expect miracles), he is back at home and he can get around with the help of a walker. This may not sound like such an amazing outcome, but if you saw the situation my dad was in you would understand that the fact he's alive, let alone using a walker, is more than just a satisfactory result. I've always been active, and the deterioration in my hip had affected my daily routines to the point where I had trouble walking up a slight grade. Dr. Salyapongse did a total left knee replacement about 5 years ago and after 6 months it was like new and now I forget I ever had it. Now I had a total right hip (anterior) done in May. Dr. S and Robin are the best surgical team I have ever had. That is coming from a 62 yr. old that has had 9 surgeries. I have had a tough recovery from the hip surgery NOTHING to do with Dr. S and Robin but I had my 4th back surgery done in January and it did not go well so my hip recovery has been hampered and very slow. Seeing Robin 3 months ago she reassured me that the hip implants were doing great and she fully understood the slow recovery. Now up to date the hip is still not recovered due to my back issues. My Physical Therapist (shout out to Ida Hurst) and her amazing team that once the RFA is complete on my back that the great work Dr.S and Robin did with the replacement the healing process will speed up quickly. Dr. Salyapongse performed a knee replacement on my right knee in June of 2017. I couldn't be happier with the result! He is young, energetic and incredibly knowledgeable. His staff is top notch as well. After 27 years as a Firefighter, my right knee was bowed out and absolutely shot. I was on my way home about 5 or 6 hours after surgery. I was walking without assistance after 5 days of using a walker. I never knew how satisfied I would be, just to be able to walk normally again! If I could give Dr Salyapongse 10 stars, I would. He's changed my life, twice. I'm currently 46 years old, and have had both knees replaced within two years. The first knee was done 10/2017, and the second knee was done just three months ago. Both procedures were done at Pleasanton Surgery Center. The staff goes above & beyond to assure that you have the best experience. They come together like a well oiled machine. My legs were really bowed. Dr Salyapongse corrected the right side first. (I had already had 2 knee scopes on that leg)...I couldn't believe the lack of pain that I had when I opened my eyes from surgery. I waited for the pain to return. It did not. The mild healing pain that I eventually experienced after PT, I welcomed, because it didn't compare to the chronic pain I had endured for a couple to a few years. The left side was done in 7/2019. I had the same experience. I may have been a bit swollen longer, however, I'd gotten a nerve block with the left knee. No one else would touch my knees, because of my age. When I met Dr Sal, he understood the level of pain that I was experiencing, and that my quality of life was poor. We laughed & I cried about my X-rays. Dr Sal is very thorough, with superb beside manners. He listens with the intent of resolving any issues, requests, and/or concerns that you may have as the patient. (He even apologized for the scar, of which, by the way, I care nothing about!) He is effortlessly humble. I feel his right hand man,I mean, his PA, Robin, are cut from the same cloth. In the last year, I have had some physical issues. In August '19, I needed a partial Left Knee Replacement. In February '20, I needed a Right Total Hip Replacement. Dr. Salyapongse did both surgeries. I want to express my greatest gratitude for his expertise, compassion and professionalism. Before I met Dr. Salyapongse, I cannot describe the level of pain I was experiencing. Dr. Salyapongse completed both surgeries and I am almost pain free. I used the reviews on Yelp as one of the sources to help me find the right doctor to replace my hip. Nine Five-Star reviews were pretty impressive, but after having Dr. Salyapongse do my hip, I would rate him six stars, if possible. Dr. Salyapongse, his PA (Robin), the support staff in the office, Pleasanton Surgery Center, and American Home Healthcare were an amazing team. Incredible skills and personable, too. I had my hip replaced in the morning and I was using a walker and home in seven hours. I can't believe how little pain there was and how fast I'm recovering (it's been two weeks today). I gave up the walker after a week and really only needed a cane for a couple of days after that. The anterior method left a scar of about 4 1/2 inches, but otherwise it's been like dealing with a muscle pull. It's so good to be able to walk again with no hip pain. read more

I'm close to 5 months out from a TKR done by Dr. Salyapongse. My new knee is terrific! From my first visit to my final follow up, the entire experience was very high quality. The staff was very kind and professional. Dr. Salyapongse spent a great deal of time explaining everything I needed to know. I was in the hospital for only 8 hours! An update to my 12/01/17 review. It has now been 3 months since my hip replacement surgery and I just had my follow up appointment with Dr. Salyapongse. My experience with Dr. Salyapongse, his team and Webster Orthopedic Physical Therapy in San Ramon solidified my previous 5 star review. Dr. Salyapongse treats you with respect, compassion and patience. His calming demeanor and warm smile are reassuring throughout the entire process. Thanks to this wonderful surgeon (I call him a miracle worker) I feel on TOP OF THE WORLD and highly recommend Dr. Salyapongse. I went from 5 months on crutches to walking 3 to 6 miles daily after just a few weeks. Two weeks after an anterior hip replacement, I'm cleared to drive. Although I have a ways to go in terms of strengthening muscles and getting more active, I feel like I have the better version of my life back, thanks to the expertise of Dr. Salyapongse and everyone on his team, especially PA Robin Mercer. He is sharp, compassionate, skilled, organized, focused, kind...need I say more? I'm glad I found him...and I'm glad to be on the other side of the surgery, which involved a one-night hospital stay. I am a 56 year old active male who had a hip replacement. I was walking the same day as the surgery. I was off all meds by day three and returned to work in one week, Thankfully, I have a sedentary job and was able to drive by week two. I found Dr. Salyspongse very down to earth, easy to understand, and confident. The total experience from the Webster office staff to the P.A. and pt. care coordinator were super friendly and helpful. As is typical for any MD office, there is a 30 min. wait but it is worth it. Also, the ValleyCare Hospital experience was excellent. Even though I was doing well, I still requested some Physical "Therapy to coach me in my return to the gym and to walk without a limp. I only had five visits and will be able to return to tennis, hiking, and even skiing after three months at the gym. I would not hesitate to use Dr. Salyspongse again.
