Went to Robert Craig Winery last Sunday and we were in for a treat!! I took my long time friend, Robert Jackson out for his Burfday hehe idk why I think that's so funny but it is!? We arrived to the old house in Napa proper and KC welcomed us we discussed my background as an advanced certified Sommelier and were sat and begun the tasting!! We started with the Gaps Crown Chardonnay which was delicious because it was the 2017 and the flavors had come together making an exquisite balanced and beautiful Chardonnay mineral driven!! Then we had Robert Craig's first wine the Affinity which is a Bordeaux blend of sorts! Which has 83% Cab Sauv 5% Merlot 11% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec I get flavors of Blackberry, black currant, black cherry tobacco leather vanilla cassis pepper smoke coffee. It's their flagship wine. Then KC gave us the Amentet Cab Franc at $120 which was delicious Big full flavored wine with big tannins, medium plus acidity cherry red fruit leather petrichor, plum, pepper, barbecue smoke, brine chewing tobacco, crushed gravel! Then he poured us the Howell Mountain Merlot which was big bold and lush. Then he poured us a taste comparison of the 2021 Howell Mountain Cab vs the 2014 and the 2014 is so. Gorgeous and elegant it's to die for!! Then we finished with the black sears Zinfandel which was delicious and Brawny full of black and red fruits!! Overall it was an outstanding tasting!! read more

We have been here today for our very first Napa wine tasting. And we can't deny: it was perfect. Right after entering that very cozy "welcome to my home" place we ran into Scott. What a perfect place to sit on a porch and drink amazing wines. It's a historical building We stumbled upon this place because we parked right out front. Walking in can be a little awkward because it feels like you are walking into someone's home. But like someone's home they make you feel welcomed. You must have a reservation. That's the only caveat. A tasking is a reasonable $35 for five tastings. Well worth the price given that these wines run hundreds of dollars at restaurants like Ruth's Chris and Charlie Palmer's. Beautiful atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating feels like you are sitting in someone's capuz living room. They even have blankets. Would come back for may years. In fact, note to my kids when they grow, being me here, sit me down and let's enjoy together. Would bring family and friends here. It's perfect! After reading time and time again about Robert Craig Winery, I decided to book a tasting visit. We visit the Napa Valley an average of four times per year and it's always exciting to find a new winery to try. I made a hassle-free appointment online for 11:30 am on a Sunday. The winery itself is a little bit tricky to find as it's in a nondescript warehouse type office park. Siri kept getting confused with her directions leading to a lot of us driving around in circle. Be mindful of this and allow plenty of time to find the winery. If you're looking for a swanky vineyard view or opulent decor, this isn't the place. If you are looking for a super friendly and casual tasting experience with easy to drink, entry level and lovely cabernet blend wines, you'll dig it here. We were promptly greeted by Tia. She was hosting a group of four on a nice seated sofa area and kindly directed us to two seats at the bar. She was wonderful at juggling both of our groups and we never once felt neglected. Tia was professional and friendly, and is the type of employee tasting rooms should strive to have on their payroll. That's why I think Robert Craig is the PERFECT place for first-timers to Napa, twenty-somethings just starting out exploring wine, or those who are constantly made to feel inferior or stupid by some of the more snotty wineries in the valley. We're lucky because we're older, very experienced in wine tastings, and know a lot about wine, but I've seen time and time again newbies being made to look like idiots by aloof tasting staff. You do NOT have to worry about that here. This place is super friendly! We tasted a total of six wines, including one white. The tasting notes were brief and concise, and the pours were on the surprisingly small side but still appropriate. Perhaps a tiny splash more would've been helpful to properly evaluate the wines because we had about 2.5 sips with each pour -- technically enough, but still smaller than normal. It would also be nice if we had been offered to revisit any of the wines we tried, which we weren't. To pair with our tastings, Tia brought out the most pitiful looking cheese and cracker plate you've ever seen. I know this isn't supposed to be a gourmet lunch or a food and wine pairing, but the teeny amount of cheese was seriously laughable. We were taking itty bitty nibbles between sips of wine. I do appreciate this gesture, but it would've been better not to serve any palate cleansers at all. My first thought when she brought out the plate was "what, are we in the middle of a cheese shortage or something?" The wines were very good quality across the board but not many of them made my palate sing. I did find the retail prices to be a bit high, but we both very much enjoyed the Mt. Veeder cab at $90 per bottle. We purchased two bottles and our $60 worth of tasting fees were cheerfully waived with no fanfare. The per bottle prices ranged from $50 - $95. Tia didn't try to hard sell the wine club either, which I appreciated. She casually mentioned it a few times and then dropped it. I will say that if you are a wine club member or if you choose to join, you will earn a significant discount on the wines! I was very pleased with this tasting and based on the hospitality, would consider revisiting Robert Craig Winery in the future. read more

Another awesome tasting in Napa, Napa Valley st Robert Craig Winery Tasting Room. Just off the Main Street of Downtown Napa by less then a mile. Small, quaint and genuinely service by wine educator KC. My hubby and I drove in the heavy rain and came in for our appointment before heading to Meadowood Restaurant. It was a perfect warm up. Robert Craig Winery is situated along the summit ridge of Howell Mountain at 2,300 feet of elevation, the highest elevation winery in Napa Valley. They specialize in small-lot, mountain grown cabernets that feature their shy bearing growing sites in the finished wines. In conjunction with our winery's neighboring vineyard parcel, they own more than 100 acres of Howell Mountain property and farm 35 planted acres there of the finest cabernet variety vineyards anywhere in the world. Their Howell Mountain Cab is mouthful, structure, and voluptuous! If you like a big cab, it's a must try! In addition to the two Howell Mountain vineyards, they own and farm 17 acres of hillside vineyard for their classic Affinity Cabernet in southern Napa Valley on the lower slopes of Mount George. They also produce a small amount of Mount Veeder, which my hubby love! Spring Mountain District, and Diamond Mountain District cabernet from tremendous vineyards in those respective AVA's, each of which is situated above 1,850' in elevation. Diamond Mountain District is so powerful and structure. A sure thing to lay down for years to come and enjoy later. Their Merlot which I personally love, a tad of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, a classic "Right Bank" Bordeaux style blend, it was quite exquisite! We love all the wines we taste, even their new Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc too! It's a great spot to visit if you love classic Napa Valley Cab, where others could charge up to the $200-$300 Raif be. Hers is $90, $95, $120, well priced respectively! Enjoy! read more

**This review is in reference to a tasting at the winery/vineyards on Howell Mountain. We had the most amazing experience tasting with Lori up on the top of Howell mountain at their winery overlooking the vineyards and the entire Napa Valley below. Lori's hospitality and knowledge by far exceeded any tastings we have done before in Napa. She told us all about Robert Craig, had a cheese and crackers board for us and we got to sit out on their elevated patio overlooking the vineyards under umbrella shade. It was perfect! We went through several wines as Lori was able to talk to us about each one individually as the tasting was a one on one (there were three of us) experience. We took a few minutes to go over into the barrel room to do some barrel tastings as well which was fantastic! I would highly recommend the winery/vineyard tasting. We were complaining about how long it took to get up the mountain but once we were done, we were sad to leave and we would come back again and again in a heartbeat. If you get a chance to book a tasting with Lori, don't hesitate, DO IT! You won't be disappointed and we can't wait for our first shipment of Robert Craig Wines to arrive shortly! read more

Great tasting experience yesterday afternoon. Our host was friendly, attentive, and informative. We had a relaxed outside tasting on their patio. It was comfortable and perfectly paced. Their wines were delicious. We tasted at least six wines, five of which were reds, which is what they feature. Really good, quality reds! Impressive portfolio! The wines can be a bit pricey, but they are of premium quality. The location of this tasting room is in a more industrial area, but don't be put off by that. It's a good experience. read more

By far one of my favorite wineries we visited on our past vacation to Napa. We didn't visit the tasting room, but rather we were fortunate enough to go up on Howell Mt. for some amazing reds and an unbelievable view. Lori was so sweet, she really has a wonderful personality and was a pleasure to be with. We enjoyed her company as she walked us through the various wines and then took us for a tour of the barrels. We were celebrating our 15th anniversary and she really made it memorable. High atop Howell Mountain sits this gem of a winery. We had the pleasure of Lori being our "hostess". It was a rainy and foggy day so we used caution getting up to the tasting room. For a short distance there is a gravel road. We couldn't see much outside due to the fog, no matter! Lori treated us to a memorable day. The wines are fantastic, they embody true Napa Valley, thanks to their rock star winemaker. It was fun tasting from the different regions: Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain, Spring Mountain and of course Howell Mountain. This is definitely a must when visiting Howell Mountain. By appointment only, so book early! read more

This review is not about the tasting room but about the wine. When we were visiting Twenty Rows for wine tasting they recommended this place. While we were there Robert dropped in for a chat and, we were introduced to him. Unfortunately we were short of time and could not make it to the cellar door for tasting. After the evening I was a bit disappointed that we did not do so. That evening we were at the Village Pub and there was one of his wines on the list, a 2011 Affinity Cabernet Sauvignon. I decided to pick it as a wine to try considering what had happened in the morning. This is a great wine and we all loved it. Not too big, complex nose and great tasting and it was the perfect wine for the Muscovy duck we had. The sommelier was also very excited about this wine and was pleased we chose it. I like to acknowledge good things when I see them and this is one of those occasions. I would happily consider adding this wine to my collection and I believe it has excellent cellaring potential. I reckon this wine will be a cracker in another 5 years time :-)) read more

The tasting room here is kind of randomly in a commercial plaza, easy to miss. But, the wines here are pretty good if you're a red wine fan. The reds were very flavorful, and the prices do reflect that ;) I did end up picking up an $80 bottle of red because my fiance loved it so much, he was seriously get excited just smelling the wine over and over again. I have to say, 5 stars for their wines. In any case, the tasting room is definitely more posh in the sense that they do have very nice furniture, not extremely comfortable, but great to look at. The lady that helped us was fairly helpful as well, explaining a lot about the vineyards that they own. But we walked in without an appointment, so when their 3:30pm appointment (group of 4) walked in, there was definitely little attention for us since she was the only one working at that time. However, their wines are good and I would recommend stopping by to try their reds. The experience just felt less personal and maybe because of the posh decor, it felt less relaxing for me. read more

The tasting room at RC has a modern but warm vibe and almost has a cozy feel to it. As for the wines, they seem to be well made. The Chardonnay was tropical and creamy with good acidity, but for what it was it was pricey. The cabs are BIG. Tasting 2008 & 2009 vintages, it was hard to determine if I liked them. The tannins punched you in the face and it was hard for me to get past that. In addition, these have pretty high alcohol percentages (14.5%+), which is why they were so hot. There is definitely an audience for the wines served here and I can see people enjoying them. read more

Situated at the top of Howell Mt is a winery that produces very elegant, world class wines. Robert Craig sources grapes from coveted areas such as Diamond Mt., Spring Mt., Mt. Veeder and Howell Mt. Our host for the day is Lori. Lori has a wonderful personality and treated us to numerous wines and a wonderful selection of cheeses and nuts. Tastings last for 90 minutes to 2 hours. This allows you to relax, enjoy great wine and learn more about Robert Craig. The venue is first class with views of the valley and then some. The star of the show is Cabernet Sauvignon. Robert Craig produces small lots of wonderful mountain fruit cabs and a big Howell Mt Zinfandel. Our favorites were the Diamond Mt cab and Howell Mt cab but you can't go wrong with any of the selections. Robert Craig is a wonderful destination for world class wines, hospitality and a memorable experience. If I could, I would award them 6 stars. The extra star is because of Lori. We had the pleasure of trying one of their earlier vintages which drove us to visit. Their tucked away tasting room location near downtown Napa speaks of the hidden gems in this region. Tia was extremely hospitable, knowledgeable, and spent ample time with us telling us the history behind the wines. We had no idea they produced a very tasty Chardonnay that is not high in the vanilla, oaky flavors often reminiscent of the area's production styles. However, the Affinity drew us here and continued to be our preferred wine. Smooth, fruity, and will age well. The spicier flavors in the Howell Mountain vintages will beg for food pairings. Definitely something to try, bring home, and share with others. read more

This is not your normal wineries/vineyards in Napa valley. This is basically a tasting room in part of a commercial business building. By appointment only. Wines here are mainly reds. Not much service here. You get your pour one after another and you're done. I thought with being reservations only you would get more knowledgeable insights about their brand/wines. I was not a fan of this place. It is indoors, in a parking lot, with very little greenery- not really how I want to be wine tasting in Napa. The wine was fine and we were able to try 6 (I think), however, I had to put my credit card information down for a reservation and was going to be charged if we didn't show, but we went and it was very empty and weird atmosphere. When you go wine tasting in major vineyards a lot is lost when tasters serve big parties or lots of people (unless you have a private tour) but Robert Craig was excellent. It was a small building that catered to small groups and our taste master Jeff was the best maestro yet. He broke it down to us and told us about every vineyard region in this area, dropping vital wine knowledge in our brains and we learned so much as rookie winos. Not only did he drop beverage knowledge he also helped guide our hunger palate as well, letting us know the ins and outs of what's good food and whats a tourist trap in Napa. Thank you Jeff. A group of friends and I visited Robert Craig's winery up on Howell Mountain and were overjoyed with the incredible hospitality (Lori Reed is an absolute gem and the best hostess anyone could ask for), exquisite views, and fantastic wines. Napa can sometimes have a sense of snobbery, but Robert Craig has none of the pretense with all the high-quality taste of the region.
