We came here to spend Mother's Day early. We had reservations for Saturday at 1pm. It was a nice day. They only have 1 indoor seating that you probably had to do reservation for. It's a small winery. It wasn't busy at all for a Saturday. There's two flights: $45 for white & red and $65 for all reds. We had the pleasure of CJ to explain and pour the wines. She was funny. I wished we liked the wines more. All the reds wines had some earthy flavor and tannins. The viognier and rose were ok. At least they weren't tannic and earthy. My husband and I attended the Bottle Blending Day Camp at Judd's Hill Winery. It was a fantastic experience! We arrived to find a lovely table set: sort of a cross between fine dining and science lab table. We were able to taste and learn about four different red wines. Our knowledgeable host, Charlie, taught us several elements of tasting while allowing us to share our own taste experience with each of the wines. We were then allowed to make and taste several different unique blends until we decided on a favorite. We corked four bottles of our wine, attached a personalized label, and brought them home to enjoy with family and friends. I would highly recommend this experience! read more

3.5-4 stars, but I'll have to check out their wines again in the future since my allergies flared up during my visit, and I was really congested during they tasting. They weren't busy at 2pm on a Sunday, and I was able to make last minute reservations a couple of days ahead of time through their website. There were only two options available for tastings: $60 for a cabernet omly flight or $40 for mixed flight of white and red wines. However, all 5 were very drinkable and fruity. I appreciated that they dropped off all the cabs in the beginning, and you could drink at your own pace; however, it also meant you had to use the same glass throughout your entire tasting. They also gave us a wine to try before the flight started, and I believe it was a rosé, but can't remember for sure. Their staff was really friendly and knowledgeable, and checked in often. There was plenty of outdoor patio seating, and many of the tables had umbrellas to give shade. I loved sitting outside and being next to their vineyard- it was very scenic and relaxing. Came here with our friends who are members so we were treated to a free tasting. I was a bit full from lunch so I just tried the first wine that was brought over, which I did like. I don't know if I caught the name of the gentleman helping us but he was super nice and had a good sense of humor. He explained the wines, sat with us for a bit, answered questions, etc. Truly a nice guy you'd want as a friend. My husband and friend mostly stuck with the set wine tasting list which included 6 wines (that's a lot of wine!) which were brought out in a cute beakers and placed on a sheet so it was easy to keep track of which wine was which. At the end, he also brought out a dessert wine which definitely smelled sweet. So in total, I think my husband and friend were able to try 8 wines? Good thing they weren't driving! The grounds themselves are very pretty and our host explained the surrounding vineyards and why some were planted in one way vs another, different varietals, the history, etc. It's definitely a smaller winery and there were only 2 tables (I think) set up outside and there was another party at the other table, but no where near us which was kind of nice, too. I went to Judd's with a friend and left with a membership and a case of wine. Love the vibe, the staff, and the wine. I really love the little tasting flasks. I've done the red flights and the mixed flights and am impressed with the variants. I'm also a fan of their Viejo Dulce. It's a great dessert wine, but I've also used it in a few cocktails. I love that they are right near town, at the beginning of the Silverado Trail. I'm now driving up to Napa regularly to visit and sample the wine AND bring friends. For too long, I would wiz past Napa proper for places toward St. Helena and I'm finding more and more gems closer in. Judd is possibly the nicest person on the planet. read more

We gifted my sis-in-law a family wine blending class at Judd's Hill for Christmas. Yes, we're the siblings who give gifts we also get to enjoy. It was super easy to book right on Yelp and made for PERFECT Napa day for our family...and our dog who slept through the whole thing. We got to sip on 4 newer wines and think about our ideal blend. Then we donned our mad scientist personas and decided what percentage of each to mix together. Using graduated cylinders, we each crafted a blend and our instructor portioned out enough for all thee of us. Of course, since we're family, we were able to tell right away who made what in the blind taste test, but we agreed on the winner and started the process. From getting the wine out of the barrel and into bottles, corking, applying the foil cap, and labelling we went through the whole process and our instructor was a total delight. Afterward, we sampled a bunch of their wines. We bought a few bottles of the GSM and the Ruby Fabulosa Port (my new drag name) and joined their wine club, which has amazing perks and really cool pick-up parties. Obviously in the midst of the pandemic things are a little different and you have to schedule a tasting by reservation. This is a smaller winery but they have great wines. I found this place on Yelp while searching for a tasting room in the southern part of the valley and it did not disappoint. We were served by Ryan who was so knowledgeable and personable (and a Bay Area native like myself - a dying breed!). I also loved his land acknowledgement; first time I'd heard that in Napa. He gave us great attention, telling us all about the wines and history of the business, despite being the only employee on duty. More importantly, the wines were excellent. This was the last stop on our winery tour. The first winery of our morning set such great expectations that the middle two were a bust, so by the time we got to Judd's Hill I had decided I was done purchasing wines for the day... until I had a sip of their Cab and it was game over. My friend and I just looked at each other and we knew we were going home with a bottle each. The tasting experience is a pretty no frills simple affair. There is outdoor seating where they bring you the tastings, but with such impressive wines you don't really need much more. This was such an amazing wine tasting. Get the tasting with CJ. She makes the tasting incredibly fun and makes it incredibly educational. Not only will you taste delicious wine, but you will learn why some foods go better with wine, what types of foods you'll enjoy wine with, and some of the history behind wine. You're able to ask many questions while you do the tasting (with CJ), so you learn a lot about wine, why people swirl the wine, how to get the most taste out of drinking the wine, etc. It's a free flowing conversation and CJ made it a blast. On NYE, I thoroughly enjoyed drinking wine from Judd's Hill. And not just any wine, our very own red blend that we named "Work Hard, Wine Hard." A good friend gifted us with a bottle blending day camp this past summer. It was a particularly great gift because we got to enjoy it with her, as well as another friend AND we ended up with five bottles of wine that would be ready to drink at the end of December. They were the perfect accompanying beverage for our fancy NYE prime rib dinner. Back to the day camp, when we arrived at Judd's Hill, we were seated in a private room and it was just us and CJ, our wine educator for the day. I really enjoyed the experience. We started with learning a bit about wine and tasting in general, and then we got to taste and talk about four of their wines -- Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. All four were incredible, so I knew whatever blend we created would be good. We were able to try three different combinations to land on our perfect blend. While CJ talked us through the process, she left all major decisions up to us. While we were still tasting, CJ saw someone walk by and waved him in. It was Judd! As in, THAT Judd! He was super nice and told us a bit about his family. His parents founded the winery and it is now multi-generationally owned and operated. Once we had decided on our blend, she took us into another room where we got to siphon the wine out of the barrels, bottle it, cork it, and label it. The whole process, which took about two hours, was a good time and it was so neat to put our own label on each bottle. We took the bottles home and waited patiently to enjoy them... and enjoy them we did! One of our friends joined their wine club, so our friend got a discount on the blending day camp. I look forward to returning for a tasting, or perhaps another blending day. read more

Great wineries! It was a blast to come over for their wine tasting! We were introduced about how the wines were made, the fire, and the contacts the winery made with the farmers. Such a great amount of knowledge! The wines here were extremely good. The Chardonnay and the white wines were pretty standard, with some of the mixing ones standing out as having a great ore&after taste. The ones I like the most were the 2011 mix, as it gave a little bit of bitterness initially, but it went away quickly to leave on the fruit flavors. The popular rose was fine, but a little sour and not outstanding for me. The estate was fantastic. It was definitely a very good made with little taste of alcohol, but yet you can tell the wine was deep and strong. The fruit ness of the grape mixed really well with everything else, giving you a great aroma as well as the richness of the grape - simply a condensed feeling. We had a fun blind tasting event suggested by the staff. We enjoyed it a lot and were offered with some sweet wines later on! Their sweet wine was on point, not as sweet as the ice wines I had in Canada so I bought two back. Fantastic experience in a great yard. Love it a lot! read more

We had a poor wine-tasting experience here. Our server just wasn't attentive. For a tasting for two (not the wine-blending experience or a tour), it took almost an hour and forty five minutes. This is not because we were relaxing and taking our time, but because we sat and waited with empty glasses for very long stretches of time. From the start, our server was not particularly friendly or explanatory about the wines. In looking over their sweet wines, I saw one I had not had before (the Tardy Harvest Roussanne). When I asked what that was, our server responded matter-of-factly, "A kind of grape." After she left I used my phone to look up what kind of grape it was, and what this kind of wine was like. It's true that toward the beginning, our server apologized for a brief wait and I told her we were in no rush. But, I did not expect for service to then drag on for SO long. At some point I saw a different server look concerned at how long we were sitting there between pours that she came and poured a wine for us. It seems like people can have wildly varying experiences. At some point, a different woman (maybe an owner or manager) came and sat down with a table next to us, telling them in detail about the winery, wine-making and the wines themselves. It felt a little awkward because we and another table were just sitting there with no attention. The wines were not to our tastes, so I think we were unlikely to buy either way. But, the service did nothing to sway us. read more

My friends and I were in Napa for a wedding and figured we should do a wine tasting before we headed back to San Francisco. We turned to our trusty Yelp apps and found Judd's Hill! We didn't book in advanced, but fortunately they were able to accommodate us. We didn't realize how small the winery was until we got there, but it was actually very lovely. Todd walked us through the history of Judd's Hill, all the different wines, and even quizzed us on facts about grapes and winemaking. Their wines were fantastic so ne of our friends decided to join their wine club, so he comped our tasting! Overall it was a fantastically relaxing afternoon. We stopped here because of all the good Yelp reviews. We did have our 3 yr old with us but that didn't stop us from having a good time. I normally wouldn't recommend people taking their kids to wineries, but our kid is really well behaved and didn't disappoint as he kept himself occupied during our tasting with some games. This winery isn't exactly kid-friendly, but they didn't mind that we had the little guy in tow. The wines were pretty good. My favorite was their zinfandel and cab. Our tasting was a personalized experience -- just the two of us with one of their reps in an outdoor patio area under umbrellas. It was a small, intimate area and their rep (the older lady with white hair) was very knowledgeable. This experience is best for people who want to talk a lot of wine and/or people who don't know much about wine, as they give you a lot of background info about winemaking that many might already know.
