This was one of the first ramen places I had heard of when the ramen craze started. Strangely enough, this is my 6th ramen place that I have tried in St. Louis. My wife and I used the nowait app to secure a place in line about 10 minutes before we got there, but still had to wait probably another 15 minutes. Since the place was so busy, I thought, "This could be it, this could be my new favorite ramen place in St. Louis!" So of course, when we got seated I already knew what I was getting... the ramen. There are quite a few choices, and I appreciate that they not only had a vegetarian option but also a chicken broth option for non-pork eaters. I ordered the Miso Tonkotsu with garlic, kim chi, and nori. The broth had a nice saltiness to it. A little too salty for me to finish the broth at the end, but it went well with the noodles and other accompaniments. The noodles were a little clumped up but tasted fine, nothing too special. There was very little meat, so if you are looking forward to the roasted pork, I would order an extra helping. Unfortunately, it wasn't the best ramen I've had in St. Louis, but it was inexpensive and would satisfy a ramen craving. Unless you've been living under a rock, you're surely familiar with the viral expansion of ramen cuisine across the United States. Robata, located in Maplewood, does its best to spread the Japanese fever, and while my experience there was decent, I'm uncertain if I can wholeheartedly recommend this particular oriental establishment. My wife and I ordered a myriad of dishes during our first visit here, in an attempt to stretch our palettes and be filled in the process. Plates of hand-rolled sushi, skewered yakitori, and steaming bowls of ramen graced our table, and we made hasty work of the spread. The sushi was fresh, but a bit ordinary, and the ramen we ordered was strikingly salty. To preface, I'm very familiar with the concept of "umami" in Japanese cooking (especially in regards to ramen), but the saline flavor was simply overwhelming and minimized the other ingredients in the bowl. In contrast, the yakitori was both well-textured and perfectly delectable, and reigned as the true star of our meal. Robata stands out as a unique (albeit average) dining experience when compared to the styles of cuisine that surround it in the Maplewood area. However, if you're looking for a high quality meal that's friendly on your bank account, I'm not sure that this is where you'll find one. read more

Went here for my first ramen ever, and I quite enjoyed it. The place was small and busy, but they seated us promptly. We started with some deliciously tender shrimp dumplings, and followed those with a couple bowls of ramen. I had the tori, which was full of flavor, especially with the addition of the sauces on the table. My partner got the yashi, which she says included one of the best vegetarian broths she has had. Wonderful joint to get all your ramen needs. The interior is a little cramped and the ordering's not 100% intuitive, but the staff is helpful and won't judge you for not knowing what's going on, not only with ordering but also in eating your ramen. I personally look even more like an oaf when eating noodles and broth and I didn't feel anyone being condescending to me - maybe I was too busy enjoying its tastiness. Robata offers a surprisingly wide selection of food to choose from, though their go-to is obviously the ramen, which they offer with a variety of broths, noodle cuts, and additions, such as egg, meat, and veggies. The sushi is all decent and none I've had here is by any stretch bad, but this may not be the place I'd go to if I was craving that specifically. Still, I may 1-2 pieces of sushi to start if I'm incredibly hungry before my ramen, though the ramen itself is filling. They even offer great take out options. As it's a converted old fast food joint (I assume), they have a small window. I've ordered online and drove directly to the window 15-20 minutes later to grab my food and head out. Very convenient. For eating-in the bar area is small but they have a few beers on tap and offer sake. If it's not too crowded that's our go-to. Robata's fairly unique in its offerings and how they do ramen for STL. Best ramen shop I've been to outside of Kyoto, and one of the best places to experience more traditional izakaya options that are often hard to find in these parts. Always get the ramen, and experiment with different yakitori (they have nearly twenty to choose from). Some of my favorites are the Quail Egg, Bacon Wrapped Cherry Tomato, and Gyu Tan Beef Tongue, all served with Japanese mayo. The ability to extensively customize your ramen has come in really handy with my family. My father is a picky eater, I prefer more traditional flavors, and my mother is vegan; between the three of us, we have never had a negative experience here. I only recently realized that they are open late on weekends, and I am very excited to spend a Saturday night downing Sapporo and sharing a large selection of yakitori with friends. read more

Karaage was average, deep fried squid legs were overcooked but edible and the chicken thigh was slightly undercooked. But the dumplings were burned and greasy. Robata is my go-to place for sushi and ramen in St. Louis. The crispy eggplant and fried squid legs are to die for. I could eat the crispy eggplant for every meal and not get tired of it. The tuna carpaccio is right up there with any 5 star restaurant. Now for the real star of the show; the ramen. This isn't just your run of the mill noodle soup. I always get miso tonkatsu, the richest broth they have. I myself am a fan of rich foods, and this delivers in the best way. Besides noodles and broth, you also get roast pork, green onions, boiled egg, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, nori, red ginger, and wood ear mushroom. I add fried garlic and pork gyoza as well, just to put it over the top. Because I'm a crazy person, I also add a good helping of their chili flakes. GO EASY ON THESE. They can quickly overpower and ruin a soup if you go too heavy; only add a little at a time. If you want spice but not too much, I recommend adding their signature spicy red sauce. I've never met someone who could finish a whole bowl of ramen in addition to appetizers, and I'm happy to report the leftovers heat up to be just as good as when they were fresh. As somebody who is always in search of good ramen, I can honestly say that this place is my favorite. My fiancé and I have eaten here half a dozen times or so and I believe that Robata currently offers the best ramen in the STL area. The restaurant is very cozy, in that there isn't much inside seating and one can expect to probably wait to be seated at an evening dinner. Now on to the food... The tonkatsu and tori broths are both very tasty and every accompanying morsel in the broth is also very tasty and compliments the broth. The only negative here is that on multiple occasions, the soft boiled egg has been forgotten; perhaps it's an optional extra now? Speaking of extras, the level of customization for the ramen dishes is second to none. The friend chicken appetizer is also very delicious, though portions are quite small. If you want great ramen at a fair price, try this place! read more

Well, the Ramen is cheap and there are a ton of noodles. The broth isn't super flavorful, but it gets the job done. It's not the best I've had, but if you want cheap ramen, it's easy enough. went in with a party of four on a monday night. it was pretty busy considering. we sat outside and asked for the first available indoor seating but I think they forgot about it because they never moved us in or addressed it. there is a little bit of room for improvement on their outdoor space. we ordered four yakitoris, three different ramen, soft shell crab, some sushi rolls, eel over rice, and some small sides. - in general, all the food we ordered was salty, the yakitoris were especially salty - some of the items were overly priced i.e., kimchi, garlic - the service was rude. we noted an error in the order and they were even more rude - wait staff seemed immature - hot sake was great - ramen noodles were good consistency - ramen soup was lukewarm - the sushi rolls were pretty yummy. good fish to rice ratio a major issue we had was with our ramen order. we ordered two miso tonkatsu and one tonkatsu and when she brought it out, it was super confusing which bowl was which. she didn't know what was what and all she could say was "I'm so confused." no apology, no figuring it out. we were just stuck with the bowls we got and that was that. two of us ordered additions to our bowls but all three of us had them... it was hard to differentiate whose bowls belonged to who. my friend's fried soft shell crab came out super late and apparently they lost her ticket. there's clearly a flaw in their expediting service. but thanks for the honesty. there were some pros but more cons. I really wanted to like it, I did. but I must say it was a disappointment. HOWEVER, I wouldn't be opposed to giving it another try at some point in the future. read more

The food was mediocre, the ambiance was bad, and the service was the worst. Went there on a Monday and it was a surprisingly busy night. Ended up sitting outside in the patio area with a group of 4. Outside there was barely any light, just a couple of candles at the table. You can't see anything which they definitely need to change. They also had a bunch of umbrellas just sitting haphazardly around the patio which the server awkwardly had to negotiate a few times. The outside patio also just reeked of a sulphur or eggy smell which tells me the area just stinks or their kitchen vents right by the patio which is a terrible idea. To start we had ordered some yakitori, soft shell crab, sushi, and then we each ordered a ramen. Overall all the food was mediocre at best, ramen was salty, yakitori had no char or flavor and softshell crab was mushy. BUT the service was the worst!!! Reason we'll never go back. When we got our food, the server had no idea about any of the food and wasn't even able to distinguish between the different types of ramen we got. when we asked her, she was super flippant and rude and just said she had no idea. We were clearly annoyed by this fact. We then continued to get rude service, the worst I've had in STL. If you're going to open up a ramen shop, hire people who actually care about the cuisine and not a bunch of rude ignorant servers. read more

From the restaurant owners who brought you SekiSui South Grand comes Robata Maplewood! That's right folks, they're back and better than ever! Technically they'll be back Monday 9/28/15, but they did a special seating Saturday night for Facebook fans. By the time I heard about it, 9 pm was the earliest opening for 2. The menu has been expanded to include ramen and yakitori in addition to sushi and the standard dishes you remember from their former location. Also new is the menu itself, laminated so you can mark your choices with dry erase marker. We decided to try a little of each and ordered three yakitori, ramen and 2 sushi rolls. Washed down with cold sake for him and a white sangria for me. First came the sushi, the Big Cheesy (a favorite of ours) and the Big Orange. They contrasted well. The Big Cheesy was tempura fried with cream cheese so it had a heavier decadent flavor whereas the Big Orange was lighter and fresher. Both delicious. Next came the huge bowl of piping hot ramen with two spoons. We ordered from a picture on the menu and got the Miso Tonkotsu with side of scallops and steamed vegetables. Really flavorful with great ginger taste in the broth. Egg and pork enhanced it well. Scallops cooked perfectly. While we were working on the ramen the yakitori came out. We got three skewers; Bacon Wrapped Scallops, Negima Chicken Thigh with Green Onion and Kushiyaki Marinade, and Buta-Bara Pork Belly also with Kushiyaki Marinade. Some of the skewers come Tare (Kushiyaki Marinade) or Shiro (Salt and Pepper). All three were cooked perfectly but the standout favorite for me was the Pork Belly. That flavor will haunt my dreams! We chatted with the owner after our meal. He said they cook the skewers over an open flame and bring them out the moment they are done so they are as fresh and hot as possible. The new space is beautiful but definitely smaller. You enter facing the bar with a view into the kitchen. Two TVs over the bar had football on when we arrived. There are bar height tables lining the front windows. The dining area probably had less than 30 seats. They do have some outdoor seating though at long picnic style tables. We asked if they'd be doing reservations and they don't plan too. However they will make use of the former drive through window as a call ahead and pick up window. So I expect some nights it may be a little crowded but we can always get it to go. Glad they are back and better than ever! read more

The ramen craze has finally hit the STL area, and Robata doesn't disappoint. Food [3.5*]: Each time I've been here I've ordered the Tonkatsu Ramen, it's a salty, flavorful, and creamy broth just how I enjoy my ramen. The portion is smaller than I'm used to back at home, and usually ordering an appetizer is needed in order to fill me up. Unfortunately the size of the appetizer and the price isn't entirely worth it and I would recommend snacking at home instead. Another reason for the lowered star rating is the overcooked ramen noodles, which doesn't provide the chewy texture of ramen I'm used to. Atmosphere [2*]: I am not a fan of this location, the lack of parking and immense condensation on the windows it takes away from the experience. I understand they're trying to give the ramen house style and feel but it shouldn't have warranted squeezing as many people in as possible in a small space. It doesn't make you want to stay and savor the food and the company, instead you're wanting to rush in and out as quickly as possible. Knocking elbows with the person next to you is okay if they're part of your party, but when they're complete strangers and you're already small, I can't imagine how others must feel. Overall, I'll probably come here again since this is about the only ramen place in the STL area. If Robata can fix the overcooked ramen issue we have a winner. read more

Went to this place for dinner, hoping for a nice ramen place like we'd recently visited in Chicago. Was highly disappointed. Menus were laminated and filthy, and had entirely too many items. The ramen section was a build-your-own kind of thing, and not very well thought out. I wasn't sure what all of the add-on options were, so I just asked the waiter if they had any spicy ramen options...he pointed and mumbled at the ramen section, then pulled a red pepper shaker from the condiment tray on the table. :/ At this point I was done trying create my own meal (I'm not a chef, that's what I'm paying you for), so I went to the sushi menu, which again had too many items. Didn't really find anything that sounded that good, but got the 8 samurai roll. Waiter brought the food, and didn't say a word. Didn't ask if we needed anything, but I assumed he would return with something to eat our food with (our tray was out of chopsticks)...he did not. Had to get up and get our own from inside the restaurant, then once again to get soy sauce. Food was ok...nothing memorable about it. Will not be returning. My advice to the owner...scale back the menu...come up with just a few good options in each category, and do them well. Don't leave it up to the guests to build their own plate...that's what buffets are for. read more

The food quality is on point, I read that people didn't like the sushi, but i feel like that has been fixed since the last reviews. I have eaten here twice and I'm sold. My only issue is the servers. My first time I ate on the bar and the owner served us and he was great, the second time both servers waited on us and they hardly spoke, and hey didn't know about recommendations for the menu. St. Louis is experiencing a ramen boom. Long after it's been popular on the coasts (sigh), ramen has finally made its way to the midwest in a big way. Robata, which used to be sushi joint Sekisui off Grand, is one of many new or rebranded restaurants cashing in on the ramen craze. However, the product here is merely average. I ordered the tonkotsu, a noodle soup of a rich, pork based broth topped with roast pork and a litany of other toppings. The offering at Robata is decidedly mediocre. While the broth did hit familiar notes of richness and saltiness, it was hard to divine out any taste other than fat and salt. It was opaque enough to pass as a tonkotsu broth, but also keep in mind that real/high end ramen-ya tonkotsu has not only an opaque color but also the secret ingredient of chopped up pork fat to really amp up the flavor game. The tonkotsu here appeared to lack that detail. The noodles are another spot of mediocrity. While they were of a tasty and chewy consistency, they lacked the quality of even the sun ramen noodle kits you'd find in the freezer at United Provisions. The toppings were also decidedly ho hum. Robata insults red meat crazed Americans by only offering one slice of thin chashu (pork simmered in soy and mirin until tender). They add another two slices if you decide for extra meat. Once again, even the generic ramen bowl at United Provisions offers more chashu for your dollar. Most disappointing was the overcooked, hard boiled egg. A classy ramen joint cooks eggs softboiled or poached, often to a perfect level where the whites are set but the yolk remains creamy but semisolid. Boiling until the sulphur gathers on the edge of the yolk is not cool for ramen. Overall Robata is worth a try if you've never been there, but if you're a fan of eating ramen it might disappoint you. read more

This is a great spot to check out in St. Louis. If you like Ramen* this is technically your only place to go but also the best. The broth is fresh and probably made in house and not boiling hot, the noodles are excellent, hopefully made in house from scratch and the Yakitori is pretty legit, aka meat skewers. I got the Miso Tonkotsu and Beef Tongue Yakitori, Pretty tasty; I ate it with the quickness. The pricing is pretty decent for the ramen but don't expect too much meat and noodles for $9. The average ramen bowl cost around $10 to $11 so pay some extra money for extra garnishes, such as fried eggs, extra pork, and noodles. I will be back to try another style of ramen for sure. Robata is a new and hot (literally hot) noodle/sushi shop in Maplewood. The location is very small and so it fits less than 50 people in the whole place. It can be a little bit of a wait during peak hours, but the turn over for tables is quick. Robata has a lot of options for sushi--I got a delicious fiesta role. But, I think a lot of people are really coming for the ramen bowls. There are (seemingly) infinite options for how to fix your ramen...from broths, noodles, meats, eggs, veggies to add and so on. I've also tried a few of their appetizers. I love the crispy spring rolls and veggie potstickers. A couple negatives or hopefully future fixes... First, because the grill/kitchen is open to the seating area, it gets kind of steamy and smoky in there. And you can count on leaving there with all of your clothes and hair smelling like grease. Second, because it is so small, it can kind of seem awkward talking to people with you because it seems like everyone can hear everyone else's conversations. The other thing is that unless you come in to have just water and ramen (which is like $8/person), it kind of seems a bit pricey for the whole experience and food. read more

Was craving ramen so decided to check this place out on Saturday night. I found out about this place from a Yelp search and I'm so glad I did! The building itself is pretty small, but they do have a small patio. It wasn't too crowded, so it didn't feel too small... . I can imagine if it were crowded, maybe feeling a little claustrophobic. The ambience was okay... Hopefully they will work on that...(Maybe cover some of the windows or change the lighting?? Something just felt off) I think that they just opened so that may still be in progress. The music station they were playing was nice. Loved every song. Service was good. Our server was very pleasant and professional. Now onto the most important thing... The food was fantastic! We started with bacon wrapped scallop yakitori and two sushi rolls.... One fried with spicy crawfish... And the other with shrimp tempura, crab and eels sauce. I can't remember the name of the rolls, but it was all so good. We both ordered the miso tonkotsu with gyoza. Delicious! Personally, I don't like ginger.. So next time I will order this soup without it.. But of course that's only a personal preference. I also ordered a side of kimchi and it was perfect. Nothing spectacular. It's edible, but broth was pretty salty and tasted like it had MSG/dashida. Only 1 slice of pork included. Had some yakitori, but I could have easily just grilled some small pieces of meat at home. I asked for Tare, but I think they gave me the salt/pepper version instead. It was underwhelming. Also had the uni (sea urchin) and it wasn't fresh. It had a fishy smell and taste. I'd just stick to the ramen here and be prepared to add extras. Get sushi somewhere else. Update: Today hubby and I got sushi and ramen. Within 2 hours, we both had gastroenteritis and diarrhea. We think it had to have been the sushi as the fish didn't seem very fresh and rice also had the consistency of sushi bought from schnucks. Ramen was a bit better today because I had tonkotsu instead of soy tonkotsu. The soy version is just way too salty in my opinion. The girl in charge of seating guests barely spoke English and had no concept of seating strategy. Came home for a visit and wanted some ramen. A friend stated that he knew the guy that owned the place and it was great ramen. Tried it the first time and it was good, but the wait times were long and service was ok. Came back into town recently due to a family emergency and wanted to hang out with my family and have a great meal to relax. We got there and they were busy, no issue there as it was like that the time before. My friend ordered a beer as we waited for about 30 mins to be seated and the beer never came. He had to remind them three times about the beer. We finally was seated at the bar and my friend finally got his beer. At this time the owner (Tom) came in and I guess he wasn't to happy to be there. We sat there for about another 10 mins, Tom walks by and my friend says we are ready to order. He reluctantly takes our order. I asked for extra pork in my ramen and he acted as if I had insulted him by asking for an item that is listed on the menu. At that point I was over it. Waited all that time and have to deal with an attitude from the owner. My friend mentioned how agitated he got when I asked for the extra pork on my order. At that moment we pretty much decided that we would not be returning to this place. The next time I come home for a visit I will find another ramen place to go. Also the sushi was bland, no flavor at all! The owner might want to work on his people skills and take his frustrations out on someone else. I've been to Robata many times and I think the prices are right and the food is tasty. I visited Japan last year and my host family introduced Temakizushi to me. I came back and was really craving it. Low and behold Robata had a temaki trio on the menu. I love it and it tastes the same as the temaki we made in Japan. The amount of fish you get varies on the person, but I've never felt like they skimped out on the fish. Of course, more is always better! All of the sushi rolls and nigiri are well priced and good, but the only thing that was not very good was the sea urchin. I've had it before in Japan and it was just not the same. It's possible it was the quality or the way they prepared it. That was the only bummer I can think of. The ramen is good. I usually go with veggie or the seafood. The broth sometimes has a smoky taste, and not in a good way, because they make the yakitori in the back too. So I don't get the ramen as much these days. Just a warning, there's often a wait. I usually go after 9/10pm to make sure we miss the crowd. Going here for early dinner on some days will not be fun trying to find seating. read more

Robata is a fantastic restaurant concept with an innovative and ambitious menu. We came around 8:45 pm on a Saturday night. The restaurant was packed (it was too cold to eat on the patio) but the wait ended up being only about 15 minutes. We started with the beef belly (shiro) and negima chicken thigh (tare) yakitori. Both were flavorful and nicely cooked. Next time I come, I will definitely try a few other yakitori skewers (e.g., beef tongue, scallop) plus probably order the beef belly again. For entrees we had the tonkotsu with regular noodles and seafood yakisoba. Again, we were really happy with both dishes. The tonkotsu broth and noodles were delicious but I would have liked more than 1 piece of roasted pork and for the egg to be less overcooked. Given that the soup is only $9 (another ramen place I recently tried charged $15 for a slightly smaller bowl), it might be worthwhile to pay to add a few extra pieces. The octopus in the yakisoba could have been more tender and the shrimp were a bit small and fishy but otherwise it was a nice dish. We will definitely be back to try more items from their awesome and extensive menu. read more

We were told to wait 15 minutes for a table for 4, which ended up being 50 minutes. The seating area is quite small and only seats around 7-9 parties total, so it was surprising that the estimate was so far off given the few tables there were to monitor. The host nonchalantly told us "it just happens", which unfortunately left a bad taste in our mouths. Whether he low-balled the estimate to keep potential customers from leaving, or was honestly but extremely mistaken in our waiting time, this wasted plenty of time that my party and I could have made other plans. I strongly recommend calling ahead if you want to eat here at a regular dinnertime. The food: I ordered off the a la carte menu, and my friends ordered the ramen. Quality good, but somewhat overpriced. Takoyaki was very good, though I haven't had this at many other places. Nothing was particularly fantastic, but I would return for the food. That being said, I would have been quicker to return if it weren't for our wasted time. It just wasn't my day for that, and I don't think the wait was worth it for what we got. But if I do return, I sure as hell will be calling ahead. read more

The ramen is not nearly as good as it used to be I got the carry out tonkotsu ramen tonight and the broth is way too salty, the pork is all fat, and the egg was plain and HARD boiled. The veggies were fine. Really disappointed as this used to be my go to. Please bring back the same quality you had when you first opened and I'll gladly update my review. read more
