went on a saturday at 4 pm there was lots of empty tables but we made a reservation prior just in case. could be 5 stars but the service is horrible. there was a mess up with my boyfriends meal and they gave it to the wrong person so they had to recook it. none of this was communicated with us even though the server walked past us multiple times. i was finished with my food before my boyfriends ever came it was at least a 20 minute wait. besides that the food was really good i had the popcorn chicken and the french fries. my boyfriend got a fried tuna roll and a spicy tuna roll and loved them (once they finally came) the restaurant was straight out of anime. lots of artistic decor. read more

The vibes are absolutely there, and the drinks here are insanely good. Unfortunately the sushi isn't anything special in my opinion, and dishes have been extremely inconsistent (looks/tastes different week to week, i've tried this place like 4 times) I've gotten their shrimp tempura (delish), spicy salmon (okay but inconsistent), hello kitty roll, and many many gyoza. The sushi here was okay, nothing too special but fine for midwest sushi. The crab rangoons had a really good amount of filling and would have appreciated a little bit more of a crunch! Our biggest complaint was the service. We walked in and waited for a while before realizing that there was a sign up sheet to be called. It would've been nice if the waiters made us aware of this as it was clear there was no separate host. We returned after we got a call saying it was our turn to be seated but then were standing for another 10 minutes before being approached by a waitress. At this point we asked to sit at the bar, hoping that we would get better service at the bar. This turned out to be true and we enjoyed our conversations with the bartender! We loved the atmosphere of this spot and it's a good spot for a casual date night in the loop. And then the spicy pork ramen with an egg was good - I liked the meat, egg, and broth but the noodles were thinner than I like them and a good amount of them were stuck together. I give the atmosphere a 10/10 since the inside was pretty spacious with a good amount of tables. They allowed tap to pay but when paying on the device, the server was looking right at the device even when choosing tip option. We paid higher tips than we normally would since he was looking. I decided to check out Blue Ocean for dinner, upon arrival it was pretty quiet and I was swiftly greeted and seated by friendly staff. The atmosphere leans heavy into Japanese pop culture oriented decor including retro anime and kaiju themes with a little bit of a cozy izakaya energy, and the menu leans heavily into the same Japanese inspiration and is complimented by a whiskey and drink bar. I ordered the goons and takoyaki as appetizers, the goons were well fried, layered, and crispy with a filling that was nicely seasoned to separate it self from the general crab rangoons you'll find across the STL area, the takoyaki were soft and chewy however the flavor was a little overpowered by the oil it was fried in. For entrees I ordered the spicy miso ramen with onsen egg, Godzilla roll, and chashu don, the spicy miso ramen broth was well seasoned and had a good body however it was not spicy, the pork and onsen egg were well cooked and melted in the mouth, the Godzilla roll was a unique blend of creamy, chewy and crunchy delights, and the chashu don was pleasant and the pork was melt in your mouth good the same as the spicy miso ramen's pork. If you're looking for a fun Japanese themed outing and dishes, you'll very well find Blue Ocean fits the bill. read more

I was excited to try this place but after finishing my meal it was okay. The rice was a bit gummy and to me, it might have not been freshly made. Overall, it was okay and got me full. I walked in and asked a man at the bar if I could place a take-out order and he sent a waitress over right away. Ordering the food was fine and I told the waitress I was going to sit in the foyer. She didn't put my number in the machine to text me when the pickup order was ready nor did she let me know it was ready. After waiting a while I peeked back in and my order was sitting on the table. To me, that isn't being attentive to customers. The inside seems like a chill spot to eat so perhaps maybe I will try to dine in next time to give them another chance. read more

Shrimp tempura roll was simple but tasty, a little on the smaller size. Crunchy Cali was interesting with the crunch, adds a little sweetness to a normal Cali roll. Caterpillar was a favorite, sweet and savory. Mango tango roll had a slight mango flavor. La Flama roll had good spice but not over bearing. Rainbow roll was simple and good. Walking into the restaurant is interesting because they nail the balance between a sleek, upscale sushi restaurant land and a shrine to visually stunning Japanese cultural touchstones like Gundam, Godzilla, and Studio Ghibli. The waiter was very friendly and told us that they hire muralists to come in and redecorate the walls pretty often, too. The rolls were great, and the cocktails had unique twist on old favorites. I did the street parking fairly close around the corner. Once I entered I was greeted immediately and sat at the bar. I got a Himbo drink that was really good. It was more on the tart side but matched well with my tastebuds. I then ordered the skinny fries and mango tango roll. The fires were ok. They were served with a spicy mayo and when I asked for ketchup l, they said they didn't serve any. They were really greasy too. The skinniness of them had them take on more oil. I'm not sure if they are drained properly. The roll on the other hand was better. It was aesthetically pleasing and had good flavor. If you're in the area it is worth a try. read more

The food was a 4, the table service was a 2, bordering a 1. They have COVID-19 precautions in place. You order by scanning a QR code with your smartphone's camera, which brings up their menu. Place your order via your phone. There's no way to ask questions about an item unless you happen to catch the waitress passing by. However, there is a box to add instructions/requests, which is how I omitted eel sauce from one of my rolls. The menu said they were out of a few things, which ended up being inaccurate after my bff asked about a Cola. The waitress hated us, her job, or both. She had an attitude about everything and wasn't attentive at all (e.g. Not bringing soy sauce to the table when we ordered multiple sushi rolls. Like, really?!). Some of her actions were COVID questionable also... On to the food. The Sweet Tofu and Fried Sweet Potato rolls were both tasty and fresh. I omitted cucumbers from the tofu roll and requested jalapeños but they don't have jalapeños at this restaurant. Rolls were still very good though. Tokyo Skinny Fries were delicious. Loved how crisp and thoroughly seasoned they were without being salty. Definitely craving more of these right now. Veggie spring rolls and the accompanying sauce were yummy. It's really hard to mess up spring rolls though. I've been a big fan of The Blue Ocean for years, for both the food and the atmosphere. The anime posters, varied soundtrack, Spicy Beef Ramen and Mango Tango are just a few of the highlights. I believe I've tried nearly every roll on the menu by this point, and I've never encountered one I flat-out dislike (though it's hard to branch out from some personal favorites, like the aforementioned Mango Tango or Fried Cardinal). A recommended stop when touring The Loop, and possibly a perfect dinner choice for rainy days (I'm not entirely sure why, but it definitely feels true). I'll be stopping by again soon. read more

While the Blue Ocean wasn't the greatest Japanese & sushi joint around, it still had some decent options. The Gyoza was the highlight of the meal. They were flavorful and sprinkled with what appeared to be seaweed and accompanied with a soy-mirin dipping sauce. As far as the sushi goes, the Spicy Girl (crab mix, shrimp topped with spicy mayo and scallions) and the Mango Tango (Shrimp, Asparagus, Crab, Radish Sprouts, Chipotle Honey, Mango) both would get a 4/5. The Mango Tango had a delicious sauce giving it an extra flavor kick. The Sweet Tofu (Asparagus, Cucumber, Mango, Inari Tofu, Avocado, wrapped with Pink Soy Paper) was different and not too bad either, although the flavor was not anything special. The Spicy Tuna (spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber) and Spicy Salmon (Salmon, Rice Puffs, topped with Spicy Mayo) were pretty basic and seemed to be lacking in something. Overall, not a bad place to try out if you are around the Delmar Loop. There is something you would be able to find that was delicious but definitely not the best sushi option in St. Louis. read more

When you walk in it is very cozy and comfortable there's not much seating in the restaurant. The service was good overall a little slow but she was extremely pleasant and the only person working so we were patient. The food actually came out extremely quickly and everything was cooked to perfection some of the best ramen I've ever had it had great flavor and spice the spring rolls were crunchy and also tasted amazing. The Blue Ocean is my favorite sushi spot in St Louis. Sushi restaurants for me fall in 1 of 2 categories. The fancy high end joints you're dropping $50+ per person, and the normal spots you'd go every day. So, with it being Wednesday, I ordered 2 regular rolls: the scallop roll, spicy tuna roll. In addition to that, I ordered a special roll: the Shanghai. I love how they serve it on wooden blocks - great presentation. I'm a big fan of all and any sushi, so I definitely recommend all three! The Shanghai roll is one of their best sellers and I really debated between this and the Crunchy Dragon Roll. I have had the other and I would say that I prefer the Shanghai roll because I'm not the biggest fan of cream cheese. Some places will overdo it on the cream cheese. I won't say that I won't eat it, but the Shanghai was the roll for me! Avocado inside made it worth it!! The scallop roll seems to have a bit too much mayo in it for me, but I love scallops nonetheless. And spicy tuna is always my basics that I crave Other items on the menu are ramen, udon, nigiri, and appetizers: edamame, fries, poke. Go for the lunch and get the bento box with chicken katsu and a roll Ramen: I have had the spicy miso ramen and the umami mushroom ramen before. I would recommend either! You need to be a big fan of mushrooms for the umami and with the spicy miso, it wasn't too spicy!! Appetizers: Can never go wrong with edamame or poke. Poke is going to make your dinner a little heavier, but you can pair it with a roll if you are trying to get full and to satisfy your sushi cravings Props to the waiters and waitresses for pounding out everyone's needs, even when it was busy. I had never been to Blue Ocean before but I was prompted to try it out by a Yelp elite event. This order was to-go and I enjoyed it at home with my dinner date. The rolls we sampled were the Blue O, the Spicy Girl, and the Cardinal which were part of the event. I also ordered a Rainbow Roll and a Crunchy California Roll. Blue Ocean threw in 2 Crab Rangoon which was very nice. The guy in front of the house packing up the orders and expediting is super friendly and nice and it was nice to see a few tables of people dining in. There was ample room to wait in front for your order to be ready and I enjoyed looking over the selection at Blue Ocean's bar because I had never been here.
