This isn't an easy review to write. If this place was in Indy, I would say "It's trying to be too…read moremany things and should concentrate on doing fewer things the best they can." But it isn't in Indy. Smaller towns have different needs and I support when someone steps up in the community to fill that need (I would much rather see that than some big box store take over!) So, I was looking for a late afternoon cup of coffee and somehow found Cool Beans. It's part of an L-Shaped building that houses Mathews Insurance on one end and Tiki Hutt Tanning Salon on the other. Nestled back in the corner is a hard to see (unless you are really looking for it) entrance for Cool Beans. After parking in a lot across the street, I entered a somewhat densely packed dining room with a large mural on the back wall, a foosball table in a corner, bulk popcorn and candy on the far wall, and an order counter for coffee and ice cream. I was quickly greeted by a woman who came over from the tanning salon who filled my order. Turns out she works all three places in the building! No wonder it was confusing. I will say the coffee was tasty and that the woman was friendly and patient while I made my order. All good there! And though I understand that this business is filling a need with some desired products, I couldn't help but feel even this single business was a little too much. Too many tables made it feel cramped. Maybe if they got rid of the foosball, they could spread out a bit. I think if the business could sharpen the focus just a bit, I would have enjoyed the atmosphere better. Review #2566

Beware...the crowds are big and the lines are long. But...it's worth the wait!! At the bottom is a medium sized cube of slightly warm shortcake. It is moist, sweet and slightly firm. The top of the cake has a thin layer of almost crispy granulated sugar - more sweetness! The bowl is piled high with fresh, lush, red strawberries. Some sweet, most firm and a little juicy. A good sized dollop of vanilla soft serve and whipped creme lay on top. The combination is delicious! It easily feeds more than one dessert lover for about $9.50. Strawberry Shortcake marks the start of spring season. Make a special trip to Upland to visit Ivanhoe's if you have never been there!

The restaurant was a lot more kitschy than I was expecting, which I loved. Our waitress had a wonderful energy. She was very knowledgeable about the menu. The menu had several unique items. I ordered a Scottish soda called IRN BRU. I love trying food and drinks from around the world. It tasted like an Orange Crush soda. Our waitress said they were known for their Cauliflower soup. It was cold outside so soup sounded perfect. I also got a pepper jack grilled cheese. The soup came in a huge bowl. The combo of the soup and grilled cheese was very filling. My friends ordered the sticky pudding. I had a bite and it was delicious. I cant believe it's taken me so long to eat here. I throughly enjoyed it and cant wait for my next road trip.

In fact it is my favorite restaurant of all time. Sunday we stopped again. I had the British chicken curry and the fatoush. It was amazing as usual. That fatoush is so refreshing! My wife had the pork chop which comes with these amazing mashed potatoes with mustard seasoning that will blow your mind. She can never finish because it's so much food, which is OK with me because I help her out some. My favorite way to eat this is to mix a little mashed potato, mustard and pork chop together into one delicious bite. We were too full for dessert, but the times that we had the dessert here were spectacular as well. Thank you to all the people that work at Paynes, please don't change anything, you are the best!
