I've been here several times before, so my wife & I decided to drive up from Indy for a bite & a couple of shakes. We arrived in the afternoon to a full parking lot & dining area. Found parking & a booth right away. My wife got the grilled tenderloin with a coffee/heath bar shake. I went with the double cheddar bacon burger with a black raspberry shake w/ broken up sugar cone added. The tenderloin lacked flavor. It needed some seasoning. Salt, pepper, anything. Her shake was great, too. My burger was really good! As was my shake. It's funny, I managed to get pics of the menu, but when we got our food & shakes we were starving & forgot pics. I remember this being a must-have when visiting friends at Ball State, so stopped back in with a buddy for his first time a few weeks ago. On the plus side it was a weekday afternoon and during a college break, so there was no line - a far cry from my memories of standing in line for 25 minutes for a bowl of ice cream in college. I had a chicken sandwich and then later a bowl of ice cream. The sandwich was good - not spectacular, but good. The ice cream was more topping than ice cream, and felt a little underwhelming. There are over 100 options so maybe not all of them are a winner and I made a bad choice. All in all, it was a find experience. I probably over-hyped my college memories (or had lower expectations at the time.) If you're in town, it's absolutely worth the visit. Hands down. Classic American drive in restaurant! My wife and I stopped in Ivanhoe's as part of the Garfield statue tour and decided to have dinner. I had the classic pork tenderloin sandwich with onion rings and my wife had the nachos. The staff was super friendly and we got our food in a fair amount of time. The sandwich was perfect. The tenderloin was crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. This is an old school drive in and THAT is awesome! Lots of woodwork and a lot of local charm. We opted for ice cream after dinner and that did not disappoint. I ordered the Moosetracks shake and it was very good. How can peanut butter, peanut butter cups and chocolate chips be wrong? With this being our son's final semester at BSU, my wife and I took him up to Ivanhoe's. It has been over 25 years since we've been. The menu is as overwhelming as I remember, 100 sundaes and 100 shakes to choice from. Where do you start? Go for something you won't find at the Dairy Queen or other ice cream shops. There are sandwiches and burgers on the menu too. My son and I split the lemon bar shake, and he also got chicken tenders. My wife got a strawberry shortcake sundae. The prices were affordable for the regular sized shake and the tenders at $5.85 each. The regular sized strawberry shortcake sundae was pretty steep comparatively at $10. Everything was good. Nothing stood out or made me want to come back again. The service ensured my lack of returning. The person taking our order was not friendly at all. Could not get her to crack a smile. It took 25 minutes to get our order! The strawberry short cake sundaes are prepped in advance, and there was plenty of staff. When it was finally time, they called my name. I stood where the sign read get drinks here. No one came. No one said anything. They then called my name again, so I moved to the back of the store where the kid give me my food and then muttered something to his co-worker about having to call my name twice. The food was good the service was not so good. I ordered a large sausage sandwich as did my wife and she ordered a large Coke and I ordered a large hole milk. 30 minutes later we finally received our meals I would rather thirsty so I took it big drink of the supposed milk. Well it did turn out to be milk however it was buttermilk not regular milk. When I brought it to the attention of the manager his answer was well we use milk for other things here considering this was a ice cream store I thought this is rather strange. He then stated rather begrudgingly that they had gone to the store to get more milk I did find it rather hard to believe that a place like ivanhoe's would have only one gallon of milk especially when I asked the girl if they had milk and she said let me check and then she said yes we do. 10 minutes later I finally received my milk after my sandwich was cold and my soup was cold but I also ordered I ordered a bowl of clam chowder. I asked the manager what he was going to do about this and his answer was looking at me like a deer in the headlights. That's when I decided that I had really started having a conversation with someone who had no clue whatsoever about the concept of customer service. I own a business for 20 years after I got out of the Marine corps of which I retired for 24 years. And not once did I leave a customer hanging like this I always took care of my customers and that's how my business was ran and that's why it was rated one of the top. While I'll still go to ivanhoe's I will check real close as to what they bring me before I eat or drink it they might want to kind of think about a little bit of training for the workers as well as the manager. But this seems to be a norm when it comes to restaurants they seem to have no clue whatsoever. They charge exorbitant prices and give back absolutely no service. You would think that if you pay $30 plus for a meal you would be able to receive the meal that you ordered but that's not apparently the case. The old Roman saying let the buyer beware sure does but take on a completely new meaning in this world. I find it rather interesting that people come up to me and say thank you for your service when they see my retired Marine corps out of my head now because it seems like a platitude and really doesn't mean much. Perhaps it's more for them perhaps it makes him feel like they are okay with the concept of people who have served in the military. To say thank you for your service. It would be better for them to say thank you for your sacrifice for anyone in the military all have served but not all have sacrificed. As a retired disabled veteran who has very little use of the legs uses a stroller and has a broken back perhaps I look at the world differently. But regardless of what they say I would serve again and active duty. But the next time you come up to a veteran especially one that is clearly disabled thanks before you say something to them you might want to say thank you for your sacrifice. Just a thought. Glad I stumbled upon this place, heading home to Indy from Ft Wayne. I was just going to get some fast food off I69, but did a quick Yelp search and this sounded interesting! So, it's not a drive in, just a restaurant. Lots of parking. Inside was packed. It wasn't clear for a newbie, but you order food on one side then the crowd was people waiting for their orders. Separate line for just ice cream orders. Also lots of tables to eat in. I saw some strawberry shortcake on tables so I knew that was a go. She asked ice cream or whipped cream? I said how much do they cost and she said 8.75 regardless, so I got both. Also onion rings. I asked the girl at the register what her favorite sandwich was and she didn't hesitate to say southwestern chicken, so that's what I ordered. She said breaded or fried and I said you tell me, and she said fried, so that's what I ordered too, ha. Waited a bit for food (it was crowded) the the youmg guy who filled my order was very nice. Strawberry shortcake is packaged well to travel. I ate out in the parking lot cuz I had my dog in the car. It was a total #yum. The dessert is enough for a few people. Then, rather than fries or onion rings, we went with the Nachos Supreme and were pleasantly surprised at the tasty taco meat, nacho cheese, and sour cream. While I recognized the salsa from a jar I've previously had, it was still very good! We followed up with a banana split. It was huge! So unlike me to not get photos. I got the turtle sundae with caramel. It was absolutely the best sundae I've ever had! The hot fudge and caramel where so warm and gooey! The pecans were delicious, too! This is a huge Sunday. It is served in a pint plastic container for to the rim. My friend got a Banana split that was the size of a plate! I seriously cannot get over the sizes and taste of these heavenly treats! Who says you can't have ice cream for lunch? We did! This hidden gem is down the street from Taylor University. The ordering system and space within the building is an absolute nightmare when they are busy. It is such a problem that going here during actual meal times is horrible. With that being said, I'd take a look at the menu before you get here because there are over 120 flavors of milkshakes and sundaes, so you'll either have to make a decision on the spot or just close your eyes, put your finger on the wall, and go with whatever your finger lands on. It's solid. It's a small spot with a decent amount of seating, but there's chairs, tables, and booths for you to enjoy a quick meal or an abnormally sized sundae. Ivanhoe's Drive-In is probably what we'd call a Marion/Upland institution. It's primarily known as an ice cream joint and as I found myself wheeling through the Marion area on a Tenderness Tour it was a place that my roadie for the day insisted I needed to visit. As I had been wheeling for the day and had no obligations for the evening, ice cream sounded good and off we went. Ivanhoe's has been owned by the same trio since 1965. It was formerly Wiley's Drive-In. It's actually part of the Garfield Trail, a trail of roadside stops commemorating Garfield creator Jim Davis (who's from nearby Fairmount). There are I think about a dozen stops on the Garfield Trail - each one has a photo op type statue of Garfield. I tend to be a little hit-and-miss with these smaller town iconic spots. Often times, it seems like they're iconic precisely because they're unique enough that they stand out in a smaller town. This is at least partially true with Ivanhoe's, a restaurant for fairly average food with slightly above average ice cream that is most notable because they have about 100 different flavors of shakes, sundaes, and ice cream. They serve up burgers, tenderloin sandwiches, a famous chicken salad (I'm not sure how chicken salad gets famous), meal-size salads, etc. It's the kind of place where there seems to be an assumption that you know how things work - for example, they have a separate line for ice cream but there's not really much present that's telling you that. You have to figure it out. This likely works fine for locals, but if you're drawn in by its reputation as a destination spot then it can be a little frustrating. Fortunately, I was with someone who'd been there multiple times and didn't have much of a hassle. Plus, the line was long enough that I had time to peruse their menu of flavors. The tenderloin sandwich has some notoriety to it - I found it fairly mid-range. It was good, but not great. The ice cream was definitely enjoyable. The employees were enthusiastic and helpful. The line was somewhat narrow for a wheelchair, but it worked. A good majority of the tables worked well for a wheelchair, as well. As a fun fact, they have what's called the "100 Club." If you try all 100 of their flavors, you get a t-shirt and your name on a plaque in the restaurant. I've heard hit-and-miss things about the pandemic experience here, so that's something that might be worth checking out. I'm personally enjoying mostly drive-thru or carry-out meals these days, though occasionally I'll have a meal on a well spaced patio. I honestly don't remember the flavor of ice cream I got - knowing me, it was some variation of chocolate or cookies and cream - my usual go to flavors. I enjoyed my experience at Ivanhoe's - if you're in the Grant County area, it's easily a place to stop for the Garfield experience and for some ice cream. It's not really what I'd consider a destination drive unless you want to do the entire Garfield Trail or visit Fairmount where you can also check out some James Dean spots. 3-stars for me sounds about right - I'd say this is a bit oversold, but still enjoyable. It's mostly staffed by high schoolers. I won't rush back, but I'd definitely visit again when I'm in the area. read more

I was on a motorcycle ride with a friend and he introduced me to Ivanhoe's. This is a destination for many motorcycle riders in the area. I can see that it's also a destination for everyone else in the area, as there was a massive line! They serve regular food, as well as ice cream (which is the highlight of the show). We all ordered sundaes and it took us 30 min. to get ours because of the long line, but we were happy to wait. The wait was definitely worth it. I had the Black Forest sundae and it was the perfect blend of sauce and ice cream. My husband had the turkey club and enjoyed it also. The next day we were at a luncheon that was serving soft serve ice cream. It was incredibly rich and decadent. I was told that the mix had come from Ivanhoes. DELICIOUS. It was funny because I was teased because I made a big bowl of it. One of the best burgers I've had. I'm always on the hunt for the "best burger" and I've never been disappointed with theirs. Not a fan of crinkle cut fries, but theirs are crispy and good. Staff is always friendly and helpful even tho the place is most always inundated with customers. Finding a seat is always a challenge. Ivanhoe's came highly recommended by a number of people. I was incredibly disappointed. Went in to order 2 shakes. Waited 20 minutes at ice cream counter for someone to take our order. Nobody said anything. After waiting for 10 minutes I finally asked an employee if I was in the right place. She said yes but she was trying to get caught up. Waited another 10 minutes. Finally got our order taken. Took another 15 to get two shakes. The second shake had to be remade twice because the employee dropped it on the ground the first time and then another employee dropped the second one in the freezer case. When they finally made the shake they forgot to give it to me. I had to ask for it. To top it all off, 2 regular shakes somehow cost $17.23. This must be an anomaly, because so many people mentioned how great this place is, but that was not my experience. read more
