No reservations were taken for Mother's Day, and it was a complete cluster! The host was not pleasant which should have been our first warning. The wait was horrendous. After waiting for 45 minutes, the folks that actually were seated still didn't have their food! We left and went to Oakwoods Country Club who easily accommodated us. read more

We visited on a Sunday afternoon in September with friends. It wasn't very busy, and we were seated right away on the outdoor patio overlooking the river. The location is beautiful--tucked beside the Roaring River in a small valley, with a peaceful and scenic setting. Menus were provided when we sat down, along with an offer for drinks. Although this is a winery, they also serve beer and other beverages. Our server gave us a wine menu but directed us to scan a QR code for the other drink options. Since there's no cell reception, we had to connect to the winery's Wi-Fi first, which felt a little awkward. After all that, the beer menu was quite limited--something that could have been more easily explained up front. The food menu was also limited, which we expected at a winery. None of us ordered wine, but two of us had beers, and we shared the soft pretzel bites with beer cheese dip and a charcuterie board. Both appetizers were presented beautifully and tasted great--we really enjoyed sampling them. After our food and drinks, we walked the grounds. The property is stunning, with accommodations for overnight stays, a pavilion for events, and multiple access points to the river. Overall, this was a wonderful place to relax and catch up with friends. The highlights were the scenery and the food, while the downsides were the limited menu options and service that felt less helpful than expected. read more

We have been a few times and have enjoyed sitting out on the deck. We even brought our dog. The sound of the river was nice and the taste of the wines were pleasant. We enjoy a variety of wines so we were not disappointed. The kids enjoyed going down to the water and enjoyed the food. They do need a little more for kids on the menu. The prices are a little high but we like supporting locals. It's not cheap to run a business these days. If you want to relax and have some wine..... give this place a try... read more

Stopped in here because we were staying local. The patio is nice and overlooks the river, which gives you great ambiance. The view is a little off due to construction happening on the bridge and there being a crane, excavator, etc. I wouldn't say it "family friendly" based on other places we've been that are. No kids menu or really viable options for drinks for them (Koolaid Jammers and tea??) We ordered a tasting flight and the charcuterie board. Not your normal kind of board. I should have taken a photo but had my hands full. 2 little cubes of Colby cheddar, 2 little cubes of Jack cheese, a piece of Parmesan and a little goat cheese. The cheese was not the star of the show. I'm not really sure what was supposed to be. The thing that took me back a bit is we got a total of 4 crackers, 2 of which were broken in half. Not sure where the other half's were? And also broken pretzels. Honestly just weird. I'd pass on ordering it. We got it because there weren't options for kids and there wasn't enough cheese to make it worth it. Wine was really good. I'm a fan. Maybe we just ordered wrong on the menu. Loved the red flights (not in to the dessert wines but that's us) and settled on 2 glasses of Cab Sauvignon. Yum! Beer selection is pretty spare (a lager kolsch and IPA) but that will change when the bier garten is up and running this summer. We ended up there cause it was open til 6 and were happy to return after a stone mtn hike... the pork schnitzel was good and a big portion of two; ask for German mustard and you are good to go. I was disappointed in the cucumber dill salad; tasted watery and even with the dill didn't have much flavor. The potato salad was ok; a little dry and also needed more flavor. Incredible!! We found this by chance when searching up nearby wineries and I am so glad we did! It is the most beautiful spot with stunning nature and scenery. The wine is incredible, with types for all tastes, and better quality than a lot of the new pop up wineries in the area. The food was unexpectedly fantastic, since we expected it to be catered more to the winery aspect. Food is always amazing, one of our favorite restaurants since moving back from Charlotte! They have consistently good specials and I love that they change drinks every so often. The service is outstanding, have had almost every waitress and they are always so kind and accommodating! You couldn't ask for a more personable experience, regardless of who you get. Our first visit was okay. We had sandwiches and wine on the porch on a crisp day and enjoyed the Roaring River. The wine is good. I bought a case. Two friends each bought a case. Our second visit was a total disaster. Five people ordered the trout dinner. The trout was incredibly overcooked; the oven baked fried potatoes were dry, and the brussels sprouts were not edible. Not one of us finished our meal. The two who ordered hamburgers made a wise choice. We saw our waitress when she took the order, and we never saw her again. Someone else brought our buckets of wine. Someone else brought our meals. The hostess delivered the check. No water glass was ever filled. No one asked why all the food was left on five plates. Despite all this, I was a server in my college days, so I am very sympathetic to food service staff and still leave a 20% tip for bad service and a lot more for good service. I considered 10% as I was so angry. I was hosting these guests from three states whom I invited to this great place to buy wine. Due to a mix-up - definitely my own stupidity - and everyone wanting to just leave as quickly as possible, I made a huge mistake and left the worst waitress ever a $170 cash tip on a $230 meal. No one wanted to buy a case of wine by that time. I didn't realize my over-payment until I was in another state. I hope she needed it and appreciated it because she didn't deserve it. read more

Sorry, we won't be returning. The last time we visited, we were told there were no outside tables and the two couples behind us were then seated at outside tables, the service was marred by the waitress spending most of her time flirting with a single gentleman, the food portion for my meal (Brisket) was literally two small slices of mostly fat. When my wife mentioned it to the hostess, she was surly and rude. My wife cancelled her wine club subscription and we'll not darken your doorstep again. We arrived late on a Tuesday. We were met in the driveway by one of the owners Tom who very politely guided us to our chalet. He kindly pointed out the amenities and offered to meet us in the tasting room in an hour for a private tasting. We gladly accepted his invitation. After unloading our car, hooking up to the WiFi, and quickly freshening up we met Tom in the tasting room. His hospitality is off the charts. Once you arrive I'm positive you will notice with amazement the love, care, heart and soul that both Tom and his wife have poured in to this establishment. The pictures are just a slim peak into the beauty of this vineyard resort. The logging amenities are plush eye popping jaw dropping beautifully decorated. I visited Chez Joséphine or Roaring River Vineyards as my final stop on a self directed wine tour of NC wineries in the Ronda area. To start, This place has the best view of this "Roaring Creek" where a porch and dining tables are located. You can't just create this atmosphere! This is such a relaxing place to enjoy a fabulous meal and a glass of wine after tastings though out the day. When I visited, they had a wine tasting menu with approximately 10 wines. Whites and reds, tasting begins with the whites of course. The owner of the vineyard and restaurant did the tasting, explained the wines and answered questions. I highly recommend a visit here on your NC wine tour. Have lunch or dinner and enjoy the wine and the view! Meet the owner and learn about the wine and land! You will be happy you did! read more

Just over an hour Drive from Winston-Salem in a little town called Traphill (which is close to Elkin North Carolina) lies hidden gem called Roaring River Vineyard. It is situated on the banks of a little river and was once the site of a couple mills that were built in the 1800's. In fact several rock columns are still standing that at one time supported the mill. The tasting room opened last year, and is bright and beautiful. Everyone in which we came in contact was super friendly and helpful, ready to discuss the wine, or the beer that they have on tap too. Beautiful setting for enjoying a sandwich and a beer or simply a glass of wine on the wrap around deck facing the babbling river. For wine and beer tasting this is a wonderful vineyard. Sitting on Roaring River it offers beautiful views and seating overlooking the River. For tastings, their flights are the way to go. Reasonably priced with a nice selection. Unlike other vineyards, RRV offers beer also. There is a restaurant on site and lodging. We did not partake of either, but the setting is lovely! read more

We weren't impressed with this vineyard. It seems to focus more on their restaurant than the wine; it's more expensive than any other vineyard we visited; and the flies on the porch were unbearable. The river outside was beautiful, but rather than having the tables next to the railing so one can enjoy the river while sipping wine, they're against the building so while you can hear it, you can't see it. The servers could just as easily walk on either side of the table. We'll skip this one next time we're in town. read more

How am I the first review????? This place opened in July 2016 so everything is brand new and top of the line. We were instantly greeted by the bar manager and the owner. They were very friendly and we did the wine tasting, the wines were very good. Our favorite was the Viognier. They also offer local craft beer tastings as well. The food offerings are cheese and charcuterie, paninis, and flat breads. Our group got a bit of everything and it was very tasty. Now for the interesting part...this place is a compound. They have a tasting room, a restaurant, 2 apartments that can be rented, a cabin that can be rented, a small music venue, and a guest lodge and hot tub. The owner was engaging and gave us a personal tour. He is retired so this property is what takes up his energy and he does a fantastic job running it. The place is super nice, private, and accommodating. Whether you want to drink, eat, stay, fish, have a wedding, or all of the above...this is your place! read more

A really nice, classy little place in seemingly the middle of nowhere. Actually, the property is large with many different areas, but the restaurant is just the right size, and unique among wineries. Service was excellent. Everyone came to the table with a smile. Even the owners dropped by to spend time at every table. Now, that's how outstanding customer service looks like. I had their Pinot gris. I thought it struck a nice balance between sweet and dry. We shared the turkey sandwich on a ciabatta with Brie and sliced apples. I was hesitant regarding the apple, but it proved to be an excellent tasting choice. The ciabatta was big, soft on the inside and crusty on the outside. The fries that came with it weren't anything special, but we're good nonetheless. We sat outside on the patio against the great view of the running (roaring?) river. Such a lovely experience. Two friends and I went to enjoy dinner and wine. We arrived around 5:45pm and there was only another couple there. It took a few minutes to be seated because I don't believe they have a hostess. The place is absolutely beautiful! We were seated outside and where shades were pulled down until the sun went down. The sound of the river was incredible back ground noise. We were greeted and seated by the owners who were so kind. Instantly felt like we were regulars! The waitress was also kind and attentive. We were offered wine samples before ordering a class (no tastings at night). The wine was so good! I sampled the merlot and rosé. Settled on the rosé to pair with scallops. Hey gang... With North Carolina wineries now approaching the 130 plus or minus mark, there's always a new place to visit. And let's face it, once you get into the groove of visiting various wineries across the state, it can become addicting. And you soon begin tagging "favorites" that you tend to visit again and again throughout the year. My wife Jane and I have now visited over 76 wineries/vineyards throughout the state - with our favorites (so far) being located in the Yadkin Valley and foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We obviously have our preferences, but it's always a pleasant surprise when you discover a new winery - in particular, one that stands out as being almost resort-like. Please read on. To celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary a several weeks ago, my wife suggested we just get out of the house and head west for a few days - doing it all spur-of-the-moment (we live just south of Raleigh in Fuquay Varina, NC). We realized that all of the Autumn colors were long gone, but nevertheless, we were itchin' to see something new. So after doing some research, we accidentally stumbled upon information about a new, smaller winery known as Roaring River Vineyards located in Trap Hill, NC. If you're familiar with Jones von Drehle vineyards in Thurmond, NC (another fantastic place by the way), then finding Roaring River Vineyards will be quite easy as it's around 10 miles west of there. When we arrived, we were greeted by one of two "adopted" winery dogs - this one being named "Festus." Festus is a very outgoing dog that believes he has to greet everyone, while the other (more older) dog, Rusty, just had a laid-back disposition. The first thing you'll notice about this location is that it's more than a winery. In fact, as wineries go, this is a fairly small one. What it does include are a variety of cabins and rooms laid out almost as if the location is a small village. All buildings sit right next to the Roaring River (which is really a larger creek in size). The entire environment has a very warm, almost European feel with rolling hills, mountains in the back drop, and a pristine mountain trout stream running parallel to the winery. I can only imagine how gorgeous this place would look in the Spring and Fall. After giving the "greeter" dogs their due, we entered the winery building which is also the location for "Chez Josephine" which is a small Bistro, where you can either eat indoors, or on the verandah outside looking over the river. It's very quaint to say the least and the atmosphere is such that all you want to do is to sit outside (weather permitting of course) with a glass of wine and listen to the rapids of the stream. The best way to describe all of this is to say that you get a "nice, warm" vibe when you enter this place. The interior layout is a cross between a European (Alpine) and contemporary decor. It wasn't long before we met Thomas and Josephine Silvey, the owners. What a delight it was to meet them. Josephine originally hails from France and she had German parents as noted by a German banner hanging down from one of the walls. She was very friendly and outgoing. Tom was a real hoot and we did a wine tasting with him, which made it all the more personal. OK - now for the wines. As I mentioned, this is not what one would call a medium to large sized operation at all. It is a small winery that currently produces perhaps 500 or less cases a year. Because they are still a smaller operation, they provide their wine requirements to the folks over at Elkin Creek vineyards in Elkin, NC. There the wines get blended and bottled and returned to Roaring River. And folks, I've got to say, both my wife and I found the Roaring River wines to be superb. Currently (at the time of this writing) they had 6 wines (see their website for listing). We loved all of them and wound up purchasing two cases of all of their wines. The wine bottle designs feature an artists rendition of a mountain trout be reeled in (after all, the Roaring River has a healthy trout population). Both Tom and Josephine (since it was a very quiet Friday when we arrived) gave us a tour of all of the rooms, event spaces, and other structures of this very "village-like" layout. Everything was tastefully done and you can see Josephine's influence in all of this. All we know is that we most definitely plan on returning soon to spend a weekend or so in one of the rooms. I've uploaded quite a few high definition photos to give you an idea as to how everything looks. Keep in mind we arrived during the first week in December (2017) so the Christmas decorations were up. So this locale is a real gem and once folks discover this place, we're sure it will become a favorite destination place for many folks. Look for the uploaded photos I'm submitting. We had a firepit at our place and sitting outside with the fire and listening to the water was very relaxing. Owner came by and just so nice. Very excellent French style wines. This is a hidden gem about 45 minutes outside of My Airy, NC. Well worth the trip. We had lunch after tasting the fine wine. The chef inspired menu with all homemade desserts are fantastic. The owner gave us a tour of of the entire place. We will have to come & stay here in the near future. We had the pleasure of staying in the Serendipity Cabin at the Vineyards this weekend. What a truly lovely place! The owners and their dogs are wonderful hosts! Enjoyed an evening outdoor fire and a late night dip in the hottub. And the wines and restaurant are fantastic. We enjoyed the meat and cheese board, a ruben and the fish and chips. We did a wine tasting last Saturday after hiking at Stone Mountain and it was such a beautiful place that we came back to stay the weekend. Looking forward to coming back soon and often! read more

First of all, I am a local, so this is a regular vineyard and have had several meals here.The food is wonderful, I have truly never had a bad meal. The service is slow, but who wants to rush when you have such beautiful scenery. I feel they have limited kitchen staff, but again, who cares when the food is great? The wine isn't my favorite AT ALL, but the food makes up for it. Considering its a winery, they probably should make better wine, but to each their own.I have been looking for a venue to have our reception once we return from our wedding this fall. With the cabins and the outdoor venue, I thought Roaring River Winery would be ideal! Boy, was I ever wrong! I have never experienced such rude behavior from anyone in my life as I did the owner, Josephine. To begin with, she had 1 of the cabins booked and wasn't willing to let me book the venue as it would disturb the other guests. She insisted that I change my date and was very rude about it. She wanted to know why I couldn't change it because we were already married. While I do respect the fact that someone else had booked the $150 per night cabin, prior to me wanting the entire venue, at a MINIMUM OF $4000 venue rental along with the $2500 cabin rental, not to even mention the wine and beer costs. She was choosing not to rent to me. Kudos for that, but from a business owner standpoint... not smart! I ask her to contact them and see if they would like to come to my event or change their dates, which she reluctantly did. She made me feel like she did me a HUGE favor and it was costing her money not to rent the cabin to them.... WHAT??? At our meeting, she threw that up to me and told me that she had to offer them several discounts to change their weekend. I simply said, "That was a smart business decision". Although they were closed on the day we met to sign the contract, I was ask to move my vehicle which was blocking the restaurant (did I mention they were closed??) When I ask to see the venue again, her response was, "haven't you already seen it?" "You need to come in and sign". Again, I ask to see it before it started raining. She got so aggravated to take us out there and was so rude to us. My sister in law ask "whats her problem"? We had been there approximately 2 minutes at this point. Keep in mind, I was warned by several people about how crazy this woman is and how she ruins everyones trips there. I thought, because I get along with everyone, that I could make this work with her! NO NO NO. This woman is certified crazy! I didn't take anyones advice and I should have! Be warned about her !! Seriously the ONLY bad thing about this place is having to deal with her!! I listen to her crazy, dictatorship for 20 minutes until the point she told me that I was REQUIRED TO HIRE AN EVENT COORDINATOR . She insisted that I use her planner or a planner with "insurance". What is there to plan?? Its dinner for goodness sake. If she requires event insurance, then that is understandable. To be forced to hire someone was a bit ridiculous to me. She then said, "this is my property and if you don't like it go somewhere else". I got my keys out and proceeded to my car. She followed us out and talk to me like a dog the entire walk, then called me a bitch. Which was the final straw! You can take my advice or anyone that has ever dealt with her!! Go elsewhere to rent a cabin and venue, OR call before you go and make sure she's not there and I'm sure you will have a great time!! Not to mention, it is twice as expensive and they have not tables, chairs or linens! Good luck to anyone who rents this venue if she is involved in the planning! read more
