I wonder if these guys are still blowing up people's cars when they tune them.... Royally ruined my Evo back in the day to where I had to spend another $20K to rebuilt it. They couldn't even take any responsibility for the perfectly good engine that went into the tune to the screwed engine that came out. Mike was a great guy he is super knowledgeable and has much race experience with a lot of big names and companies after talking to him for a while. I came to him to repair my AYC pump and he got to it right away and had it done within 2-3 days and he was very realistic on the time frame. They were also very understanding to hold my car for a couple days until i can pick it up. They pay attention to detail on everything they do, but just a reminder they really open up at 11am. If you need any EVO or mitsubishi Mike has been working with these cars since the 90's so he knows his way around totally recommend his work great dude, and great staff very knowledgeable about the evo. read more

Mike and team are the best. I've known Mike Welch since 1997 and he's the same guy today as he was then, obsessed with making the 4G63 as good as it can be. Many of the '90s Huntington Beach crew still haunt the shop so the level of knowledge is through the roof. This was my second time at Road Race with my Evo X. the first time was for a 30k service when I first bought my Evo, and the second time was for the infamous Clutch Master Cylinder upgrade. The guys here are awesome. Robert takes the time to help you understand what they are doing and why. On my first visit he made it aware that my CMC was already leaking at such a low mileage. Dealer prices can sometimes be horrible and leave your bank account looking less satisfied.. it's already like that with car payments haha Came in a couple weeks ago for a drivetrain fluid change. Got hooked up with a good price and got my serpentine belt replaced also. They checked and made sure my brakes were working properly so I don't go off a cliff and die all while explaining to me that safety matters any way you drive (reckless driving) or what car you own. Great info on recalls and upgrades I can get and apply. High end to conventional oil, brake upgrades and checkups. Rally cars and racing. These guys have it all. Trophies and plaques hang on their wall proudly and all with a funny story behind it. I recommend this shop even if you have questions the dealers don't want to answer. Their relationship with HKS USA took an unexpected turn as they lost their support after a former employee partnered with them to create the business. Since opening, RRE (as it's more commonly known) has established themselves as unequaled in the industry for the areas of which they specialize. They are best known for their work with Mitsubishi cars, but have worked closely with many race teams, both on and off road. The company has since spawned off-shoots like Road Race Chasis, Road Race Motorsports and the unfortunate abortion of a douche, Mullerized who lives in a shallow box filled with anger, excuses and FAIL. (sorry, that's another review) Customer service as road race is poor. Several of their sales staff have the attitude that they think they know more then you by way of the company's reputation. I avoid them as much as I can. If you must deal with them, be direct and to the point, have you part number ready and don't ask "what if/day dreamer questions." Ordering through RRE online is always good. They are quick to ship parts as long as they are in stock. Getting an appointment with RRE is often a challenge. The wait list can be long and arduous. Not always, but frequently. The quality of work at road race is simply unsurpassed. I personally do not trust dealerships to work on my cars. I do all my own work because I want it done right the first time and not thrown together by some HS drop out who managed who's dad's brother's uncle's son knew someone who owed his GF a favor and so they hired the guy to change oil. These guys do it right the first time. They don't man-handle installs and they are innovative as hell when it comes to making customizations work. One of the things I appreciate most about RRE is that they DO make mistakes. It's not often, but it has happened. Something may break during an install, someone forgets to put fluid in a transmission, whatever. Road Race is a shop who will take responsibility! Operator error and defective products aside, if someone goes wrong and it's their fault, they are quick to own up to it and resolve the issue. They aren't going to make ludicrous excuses as to some phantom cause, they just absorb the cost and move on. This is the mark of a well established shop. If ever I get in over my head, I trust road race with any/all of my cars. There's only one winner in a race. And only one shop that can be the best. That's this one. read more

I was a client of Road Race for about 7-8 years. They first worked on my eclipse gs-t and did a bunch of work for me. Sold it. Bought an evo ix mr. Started going back to them, mostly for parts since I myself am a mechanic, but not for mitsubishi. Anyways long story short, they installed a sheptrans for me. Got my car back. had a couple leaks from my transfercase, It was from my extension housing seal. I get fed some lies that they over filled my transfer case because the redline shockproof fluid expands a lot, even though it never overflowed when I changed my own fluid. So I wait there patiently for 3 hours. I notice they test drive my car 3 times. all the while I am wondering why. Finally they finish my car. I get it back. First I notice all of the grease around my entire steering wheel. Then on my hood. Then on my side skirt...not sure how that got there. Anyways. I would have gotten fired if I ever delivered a car like that. The lesson really was taught to me not to be lazy and just do all of the work myself. Road Race does cheap work, and for the most part it is done right. however if they mess something up, be ready to wait, hear lies and excuses and receive no customer service whatsoever. But then again they have always been like that, I suppose its just since I have been in the field that I know what the real minimum of what to expect actually is read more

My husband is has a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and he got me a ralliart sportback soon after we were married last year. When I first got it, I was a little disappointed because I did not feel that the car was too much better than my Civic before even with the fancy Recaro package and all the other options. We took it in to RRE for a tune up and they did their magic to it with some adjustments. I really enjoyed the car so much more after they fine tuned it for me, there was a big difference. Since then, I have sent a friend in with her old Eclipse. Even though her car wasn't a fancy race car like the other cars there, they fixed up her old Eclipse and gave a second life to a beater that she had since the 90s. If you have a Mitsubishi, this is a great place to go! My husband knew about RRE from the mid-90s, so they have been around for a long time and they know their stuff. As for the other review about "the huge fat Mexican guy with glasses," his name is Honda Robert and he is a big reason I feel comfortable going there because he treats ladies like a total gentleman. A lot of car places are huge headaches for women to go to because the mechanics treat it like their personal dating service. At Road Race all the mechanics have been super polite to me. Honda Robert is a well loved fixture in the car community and I have never had anything but a great experience with him. It is uncool to make jabs about his weight and call him an idiot, it says more about the person posting the negative comments than about Honda Robert himself. read more

Road Race Engineering IS THE BEST Mitsubishi shop in the US for sure. I have been coming here with my EVO since I got it in 2008 for service, tuning and aftermarket parts. Everything they have done on my car is perfect OR they have immediately fixed it to perfect for free without hesitation or question. I have gotten: oil changes dealer recommended services psychological counseling custom exhaust fabrication fancy/shiny aftermarket parts installation turbo replacement (+associated bits with custom work) dyno tuning suspension work track preparation pre-trackday tech inspection clutch work brake work electronic work ...and I will get anything else done here that my car needs to be a daily driver that I can track 4-6 weekends a year. The shop has a close knit family vibe and every single person that works at RRE is good people. If you have a mitsubishi and you want more personal care with a local independent service shop that can do more than just simple service as well, RRE is for you!! They have everything from basic oil changes to custom fabrication on hand. I HIGHLY recommend RRE for your most simple to your most complicated Mitsubishi needs. Just when i called to reschedule an appointment he said if i ever missed one again that he wouldn't do business with me ever again! just a compression test? Friend got his Evo X tuned here and at first, the service was really bad. A lot of people were waiting past their appointment times, many technicians were late to work, and their waiting room was a mess. When a technician was finally available, he (Rick) told us that he had to go home for about 1-2 hours and pay his bills - and then he would start with the tune. My friend and I were like "WTF" and I was about to leave this place a really negative review until Rick suggested that my friend give him a ride to his house and he'd road tune his Evo on the way (pretty cool because you can feel your car going faster while driving and it's cheaper than a dyno tune). Rick was one of the most knowledgeable guys I've ever met and I learned so much about tuning/cars that day. After the tune, he even gave my friend and I a ride in his crazy 1,000,000 HP Evo IX (which I swear is the fastest mother fu!kin car I've been in). The quality of the technicians' work and their knowledge about tuning easily outweigh any negatives about Road Race Engineering. Hands down, best place to get your Mitsubishi tuned. read more

I bought a used Nissan 350z from some kid that had it about an inch off the ground. After bottoming out my sports car endlessly at 2 mph, I had had it. After visiting a few places that did not want to touch my suspension, I decided to take some yelper advice and make the trek down to Road Race. Not only were Matt and Mike helpful about getting me in on my day off, they also ordered parts in advance to save me a trip down there. Upon inspection Matt discovered that the car not only had low springs but also aftermarket shocks. Being active in the racing world he found me an avid drifter that was anxious to swap me his stock springs and shocks as an even trade. Road Race saved me money on parts and was so knowledgable from start to finish. I'm much happier now. Two words of warning, they aren't the cheapest, but they are known for doing the job right. As I mention because of their connections and resourcefulness I ended up only paying half of what I had expected. Second, they are VERY busy. On their website they warn you about good times to call, and that you should only drop by between certain hours. If you have patience this place will work for you. If you don't then you may need to try elsewhere. Highly highly recommend Road Race. read more

Been here twice for my 08 Evo X GSR. This place knows service I tell you what. I came here when I first got my car due to a suspension squeal coming from under the car and these guys threw it on the lift and gave me a diagnosis with red bull as payment. Turns out the previous owner put a stabilizer bar that was too big on it and its rubbing the engine mount. I didn't get it fixed but the level of service I got was good. Second time I came back was 12/4/13, almost a year later for maintenance. Normally this is something I'd do myself, but I just wasn't feeling it so I brought it here. I was in and out in about an hour. Gus, the shop manager, I believe, is a really cool guy, he was giving me updates and they even let me know about a few minor issues that they found while they were under the car( under tray, some other stuff). This place is priced pretty fairly for their services and its cool because they know these cars in and out. They do the drivetrain fluid change with Redline products and so now my car shifts better than before, it eliminated the notchiness in the shifter. I did find myself getting a little bored at the shop but started shooting the breeze with some of the other guys getting work there done. It would be cool if there were some other stuff to do in the area, but there isn't, so you should bring some entertainment if you are gonna be here a while(or you could just listen to them dyno tune cars, because that's pretty sweet). I am a happy customer and will definitely be coming back. read more

Here are a few of the highlights: 1) They were happy to answer all my questions, some more naive than others 2) They helped me scavenge a couple trim pieces from totaled cars to fix broken plastic bits on my own car (no charge) 3) The service cost a couple hundred dollars less than the quote I got from South Bay Mitsubishi Overall, it was a great experience. This is quite a tuff call: I hired Robert to install a lift kit because he sounded extremely knowledgeable and I'm confident he is. When I came for my appointment he continuously warned me "don't get mad if the bolts strip when I take everything off" this made me a little uneasy but OK. Anyways he finished the job and it all seemed okay until about 3 days later, I started to hear knocking in one of my wheel wells, I called and asked Robert to look at it again and he said he'd call back. I decided to jack up my car and take my tire off to look at the sway bar link since I know it was the most likely culprit for the knocking noise, but my strut is leaking oil! I didn't notice any damage to the sway bar or any other component. This should not have happened. Pretty frustrating. I've watched some YouTube videos on wheel alignment to make sure that didn't cause my strut to break but doesn't seem that was the reason (I had my wheels aligned immediately after Jason had worked on my car). Anyways I'm happy my car is lifted but I'm unhappy I have to spend another $500 to replace the front two struts. I guess that this with a grain of salt. read more

I was going there today for asking their assistance to inspect the squeaky noise happening at my front wheel. I was suspecting the cause of the noise is because of the damage wheel bearing. When I got there, I was welcomed by mike. He had asked Robert to test drive and inspect my car. It ends up the cause of the noise is because of the dust shield rubbing the rotor. He had helped me to bend the dust shield inward the sound had completely gone!! No cost out of my pocket. i still leave $20 to mike to show my appreciation. Robert also gave me his thought about my rollcage and seat rail which I feel very informative. Big Thanks to Robert for fixing my car with minimum cost!! He is a very talented mechanic . If you own a performance oriented Mitsubishi (Evo, Eclipse, Eagle Talon, etc) and live anywhere near them, this is the place to go. I do have specific "gripes" about RRE which I think they could stand to improve for the sake of some people. Stuff that doesn't bother me in the least but would very likely make a better impression for some people. 1. RRE is ridiculously busy. Because they have such a huge fanbase, do so much for the community, and are helping so many Mitsu owners, it can be difficult to get someone's attention and ask them questions on the phone or email. I'd imagine it would be difficult to order parts from them for this reason. At least for me, they are close enough for local pickup if necessary so this doesn't bother me at all. 2. RRE is particularly informal and seemingly laid back when you go to their office, but still really busy. If you roll in and don't actually say anything, you can expect to stand there silently for a while even when it seems people are sitting there doing nothing. RRE gets so much foot traffic, it's hard to say whether you're just there to meet a friend or if you're actually someone needing help. Truth is, unless you're a regular who actually knows the employees, you may find yourself not knowing who works there and who is another customer. If you need help, ASK FOR HELP instead of standing and stewing. I personally can't stand the "I should be waited on hand a foot the moment I walk in the door" mentality. This isn't a restaurant, be assertive but polite and ask for assistance and you will get help. Don't be a wallflower just expecting to be watered. 3. RRE isn't known for their impeccable showroom or lobby. It would not be unfair to call it run down or dingy, honestly. Would it kill them to have new carpeting or paint or new furniture? Of course not. It doesn't bother me in the least but understandably some people may be a bit put off by the fact that RRE is too focused on taking care of customer cars than they are on keeping up appearances. It certainly wouldn't hurt their image to have a better looking visitor area, but again makes no difference to me. 4. RRE can be "slow" getting to some things. If you have an appointment at 5pm, odds are you will still have to wait a while for them to get started. If all you want is to get stuff done, just have a buddy follow you and then take you home afterwards. Come back the next day. I'm certainly not discounting people who have their own reasons to criticize RRE. Maybe some people would be better suited going to a different shop for their needs and I could certainly recommend some if you want to ask me offline, shops considered high quality and trusted. But this is about Road Race Engineering, not them. There's a reason why their name is among the oldest, most trusted and well spoken of by the Mitsubishi enthusiast community and it's all of these reasons why the shop suits me just fine and will be my go-to shop for any of my 2013 Evo GSR's needs, for performance or maintenance. read more

I drove from San Diego because I was told this place was the best. I got my 60k service done and they did not skip anything, no skimping at all. I had managed to break the mount for my intercooler a few days prior. I had driven all the way using a zip tie to hold it up...they fixed me up right for hardly any change.
