I received care here a few years ago, and after talking with a friend recently, we realized we both had very similar, and very concerning, experiences with Riviera Smiles. I feel it's important to share mine. I waited over an hour past my appointment time before being seen, and unfortunately things only went downhill from there. Months after my visit, I received a surprise notice saying I owed a lot of money, with no itemized bill attached. I then spent months going back and forth between my insurance and the office. My insurance was incredibly helpful and patient, and they told me the office did not file the claim accurately, which created ongoing issues. The office staff, on the other hand, felt scattered and disorganized every time I called. They also billed me for several X‑rays, including a panoramic one they couldn't provide proof of ever taking. Because the information I was getting from the office kept changing, I ended up keeping pages of notes with time stamps just to track everything. I simply didn't trust Riviera Smiles to keep accurate records. After reading other reviews, it seems like my experience wasn't an isolated one. I would recommend being very cautious and double‑checking everything if you choose this office. read more

If you look at the one star reviews here you will see a common theme. Overcharging, incompetence when it comes to handling insurance claims, and hounding the patient for more money due to their inability to manage their relationship with the insurance providers. They had me pay a deposit up front at the time of my cleaning, then when I came in for my second appointment (which had been included in the original quote/deposit) they asked me to double what I had originally paid. They forgot to send in the scans for my onlay and didn't realize it until the day I arrived to have it put on. I had to keep the temporary for an additional two weeks. They wouldn't pay to expedite it either as they assumed zero responsibility for their error. That didn't stop them from trying to squeeze more money out of me though. When I finally went to get the onlay put it, it seemed as though the dentist was mad at me, she gave me the shot to numb my mouth and began drilling immediately, no waiting for the medication to take affect. I was clearly in pain and even stated so but she pressed on. Then this dental work failed within a year of it being put in. (They did reinstall it at no cost however so I'll give them that) Almost two years later and they are still pursuing me for claims that the insurance company is saying have been filed incorrectly and incompletely. There have been four different office administrators in this time. Zero continuity, and I have to repeat this process with each new employee. I've lost at least 30 hours of my time trying to do their job for them. I've been delaying writing this review in hopes that they would make things right and I could simply leave no review, but it's ridiculous at this point. Highly unprofessional. I would never recommend them. If they continue pursuing me for this money I will not hesitate to go to small claims court to try to recoup compensation for my time. read more

I've always been referred to as a "high maintenance" patient since my early 20's. Now in my mid 70's, I think I can say I've seen most of the dentists in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria. That's why I take such pleasure in giving Dr. Ana a positive review for her business Riviera Smiles. She has cutting edge, state of the art equipment/ technology and a professional and competent crew around her. She has a good manner/person skills and great skills with her hands for her dentistry work. She took me on almost immediately with broken teeth and didn't scare me off by telling me the seriousness of my situation. Was recommended this place by a friend and very excited to try it out. Off the bat, I was sitting in the waiting room for 40 mins. I sent over my insurance information prior to ensure my cleaning was covered, which it was. When filling out the information on the tablet, it asked about preferences and one of them said "to know about costs prior to services up front". I think this is a standard business practice that is typically done, yet upon exiting my appointment I received a bill for some X-rays that I was never told were an extra charge. I was shocked at how disorganized everything was, usually there's w dental hygienist assisting the doctor and I felt like I was the assistant. I was soaked in water from them spraying my clothes and not being able to suction and do the cleaning at the same time. The cleaning was not comfortable at all and then on top of it the girl said I was getting toothpaste and I thought a toothbrush goodie bag like I've gotten at every other dentistry establishment. Instead they gave me a $25 tube. This place is money hungry and very shady about how they charge their patients. They don't value their patients, their feedback and try to nickel and dime every which way they can. Don't surprise patients with a bill at the end of the service when they don't know what they are paying for, it's a pretty awful way to run a business. read more

Dr.Martinez and her staff have taken care of me SO well! The office is clean, modern and full of friendly ladies that have you feeling comfortable throughout your appointment. I've seen a few different dentist's looking for "the one" and she is it. No pain during my visits and she's very confident and educational in explaining procedures needed/moving forward etc. (I've had a broken tooth, crown, fillings, cleanings all here... lots of catching up from lack of having a reg dentist) I don't have insurance and she has been upfront about all costs and helped guide me through the financing options etc. to make it all possible. DO NOT GO HERE. This is a dishonest business and they bribe patients to write positive Yelp reviews with a free electric toothbrush, so do not believe any positive reviews. I believed those bribed reviews, and now I regret it. It looks like there are a few honest reviews here that had similar experiences to mine, and those are the real ones. They over-charged me at the time of my filling, and said I would get a refund depending what my insurance covered. Then when my insurance paid (which I confirmed with my insurance company went through), Riviera Smiles has refused to give me a refund. They are now saying I actually owe them even more money for my initial cleaning after they had pre-confirmed in writing that visit would be fully covered by my insurance. I have been dealing with this since November. I really liked Dr. Martinez when I saw her, she seemed like a lovely person and knowledgable dentist, but the experience since then has been terrible. Impossible to talk to someone, impossible to get answers, I've even had to go in person since they don't reply to email or return voicemails. They blame employee turnover which I understand is a challenge for business, but that doesn't excuse over-charging and being dishonest. read more

I just had the best experience at Riviera Smiles! Dr Ana Martinez and her staff were beyond pleasant - they were respectful and treated me with dignity and kindness. I came in because I chipped one of my incisors and it was sharp & was cutting my lip .. I just stopped in and asked for help and not only did they get me in immediately! Wow! Unheard of! Explained the issue - Dr Ana took a look and we decided to use bonding as an interim fix. Looks PERFECT! (Will be re-fixed with a crown at a later date. I'm going in for a cleaning & complete exam tomorrow - while I'm usually a nervous-wreck going to the dentist, I'm not apprehensive at all! I highly recommend Riviera Smiles on Coast Village Road! Everytime I have been to this office it has always been very unorganized. big turnover rate of employees. Also trying to make an appointment is ridiculous very unprofessional! I have great dental insurance and I will not be returning to this office again. Simple procedures that could be done in 1 day they cannot accommoplish. the Dr. and Hygienist want you to return consecutive times for a cleaning because the front office staff overbooks their day and cannot complete your appointment for a simple teeth cleaning. read more

Terrible service! I do not recommend this place at all. Pretty disorganized and the staff doesn't know how to treat people. They don't care about their clients. First, they mess up my appointment. I got there on time and they never put me on their calendar. Instead of having just one appointment they divided into two. Then, I went to my second appointment and they kept me waiting for 30 minutes!!nobody came to tell me nothing. They put me into the room telling me the doctor was coming and nothing.. keep waiting! I have a lot of anxiety surrounding the dentist for that reason I have neglected my dental health. My past experiences have not been at all good so finding a dentist I felt I could trust has not been easy. I found Riviera Smiles on a thread in a local mom group I follow saying nothing but great things. I just had my first visit I literally cannot say enough good things. I went in extremely anxious and scared, the assistants and reception staff were great and Dr. Martinez was beyond amazing. When I first met her the fear really set in for me about being at the dentist but she quickly helped settle my fears and by the end of the appointment I left feeling so confident. Her assistant was so kind and we had such a lovely chat while I waited to talk to Dr. Martinez which helped keep me calm. What an absolute nightmare. STAY AWAY. I had some scaling done 2 years ago and they are calling me now to squeeze $400 out of me. The thing is I was very clear about finding out exactly how much I would owe when I had the procedure done. I went through it in detail with the office coordinator at the time and she laid out exactly how much I would owe. I was okay with that price and went ahead with the procedure. Well, apparently that office coordinator was giving false quotes (as per Dr. Martinez current office coordinator) and now I owe more. It's ironic because on Dr. Martinez's intake form she asks patients to if they would like to know about costs up-front. Well, apparently that is just lip service. They will tell you something and charge you more without taking any responsibility. This is a shady practice. And to add insult to injury, the scaling procedure wasn't effective. And I'm the type of guy who is very diligent about my dental hygiene. read more

Today was my second experience. I was not totally blown away by my first, so thought I would try again. I think the doctor is ok and is a good person. It is the overall experience that I do not like. Today I arrived on time and ended up sitting in the chair for 25 minutes before seeing the doctor. I was very tight on time and at 30 minutes late I would have walked out. The doctor has no dental hygienist, so she is now doing the cleaning. It was the fastest cleaning I have ever had in my lifetime. Maybe because she was running so late. And, it does not feel like a good cleaning. Then another girl appeared to do a flossing, and that was a total joke and waste of time. I could have done better with two broken fingers. What I did not like about my first visit and then months following that visit was a stronger sales and marketing pressure from a dental office. Was getting phone calls about different things and follow up that was just too aggressive. I do not need that from my dentist. On my first visit I had asked about invisible braces to maybe close a very tiny gap between two teeth. Today, I felt drilled on why I have not done that. That was one of the items that they kept calling about after my first appointment. I finally asked to be taken off of their call list. My first visit was very expensive. Today, $168 for a 15 minute cleaning and then they sold me a bottle of mouth wash for $25. The office has an excellent location in Monticeto, but for me, it all ends there. I am new to this dentist practice and I found GOLD! I was apprehensive of getting fast braces, but Dr. Martinez reassured me of the great success and she was absolutely right. I am coming up to 2 months with Fast Braces, and my teeth have moved so much - I'm so excited! I'm also sleeping so much better with the jaw realignment going on, it's pretty neat. The whole staff is friendly and very patient-oriented. I highly recommend getting Fast Braces, so much quicker than Invisalign and it works! :) read more

I had the exact same experience as Josh. Beware. They will provide an estimate based on a review of your insurance and then end up paying far more. In my case I would have opted for a second opinion had I known that what they submitted would be denied. I was actually told by the office that insurance often does not cover it -- would have been good to know at the time of service!!The office also submitted a charge to my insurance for a service I did not use which is super shady. I liked the office and dentist, but after this experience I can not recommend. Trust is everything with dentists and other medical professionals and I have zero trust in them. read more

Not a Yelper but I believe more people should know the great service this office provides. How many usually don't contact a dentist until its too late and a tooth is hurting? Well this girl does. Dentists have always made me nervous but this office made that all change, I got a cleaning from Dr Martinez and she was more than thorough with what she was about to do, during the cleaning she continuously asking if I was okay and explained what to expect especially when I was going to feel some discomfort, she did not sugar coat anything and her honesty I appreciated the most. Also I needed a root canal and had to get referred, the doctor available wasn't going to be until August 8th but seeing as I was in pain Dr Martinez and her amazing staff helped me get in that day, I couldn't believe it and am forever grateful. Her and her entire staff from reception to assistants were very professional, compassionate welcoming, and importantly knowledgeable. I wasn't just a customer to them that day, they cared about my pain and advocated for me to get the treatment I needed. She's knowledgable , great side manners, dedicates her time and effort to best care possible even when an emergency, which was my case while visiting the area. Called several doctors around and all wanted to have a pre-consult, a formal appointment, etc etc Dr Martinez's staff put me on hold while consulting with her and coordinated my emergency case. Dr M, advised on what to do best. After returning home, my dentist told me that the work done was impeccable. Thank you Dr Martinez!!! Ps. I don't like to write bad reviews but I feel like I should warn people about this dental practice because they are very dishonest. If I could give no stars I would. The dental work was not the problem. I was pressured to pay a large portion of some required dental work up front before any work could be performed which I did. When I checked into my benefits after this it appeared I had been overcharged, but I decided to wait until I had all the statements from the insurance company. I began receiving calls and emails from the dentist saying I owed them more money. I showed them all the statements from my insurance company, clearly showing them I had been overcharged. They refused to reimburse what they owed me (over $400) and said the insurance company had made an error and I still owed them. So...I finally got in touch with the insurance company's dispute resolution department and they were extremely helpful. It took them several weeks to review everything and said I had definitely been overcharged and they would contact the dentist to get the reimbursement. Almost a year later, after them working diligently on it, they told me the dentist was unresponsive and they would issue me the reimbursement and go directly after the dentist to give them the refund. Now, three years later the dentist still keeps harassing me saying I owe them money, even though I have repeatedly shown them the responses, statements etc. I finally told them if I got one more call or email I would write this review. It still did not stop. I just don't want others having this same awful experience. I guess they think the client will give up and just forfeit the money - which I almost did....because who has time to have to fight over something like this for so long! I am so sorry to have to report so negatively, but I feel I have to warn others. read more
