I pop into Danette's shop, introduce myself and explain our situation, and she came through big time in 20 minutes. Four remarkably moist and delicious cupcakes for the two of us and our two young adult children who were joining us. She was so busy, and still helped out. If I could give 10 stars, I would. The timing of my trip was working out that I was totally going to miss my chance to go, but Christie came back after hours just to help me out, she even gave me a candle. The bakery was beautiful, the decor felt enchanted and their display case had descriptions next to each cupcake with a picture from the theme. I love how organized she was with everything, and how easy that made it on my end--the cooking/baking instructions were simple and spot on, and the labels were perfect for peeling off to put on the table in front of the served food. The food was delectable all the way around! Such a wonderful variety, and what a treat to have such scrumptious food each day. I especially appreciated that Tara used homemade and local items, and that she took such care with the presentation. One thing I hadn't anticipated was how Tara's presence would enrich the retreat! She brought a lively and positive energy into the room every time she arrived; a breath of fresh air each time. It was so easy to have here there, and such a treat for me to not have to think one bit about what she were up to--I trusted her to do whatever she needed to do to get food on our table, and that was pure joy for me. Biggest hits: orrechiette with pumpkin ragout and portobellos; flatbread trio; gingerbread dessert; roasted pear and brie crostini; bisque with grilled heirloom, mozzarella and basil sandwiches; quiche and frittata; burritos; roasted Brussels sprouts. After much deliberation and debate, we decided on Beth at the Sugarmaker Bakery for far too many reasons. Bottom line, Beth showed up personally on our wedding day to assemble the cake (three tier, elevating layers..... think floating stairs, best way I can describe it). Prior to showing up we were shown examples of previous work by the Sugarmaker Bakery, and it rivaled the cakes on TLC "Ace of Cakes". Why Julie N. had "pleasant" things to say about her purchase, I see no reason why she felt the need to drop a three star rating on Beth. She does stellar work, and I would recommend her over half the bakers in the North Conway area!!

We arrived 30 minutes before they opened (unaware they were closed) and were still met with kindness and helpful staff who made a reservation for us for when they opened. So immediately I ordered the Parmesan bread with dill pickle butter. The bread was warm and I enjoyed it but the butter with dill pickle just didn't work for me. Lots of other things to me could have complemented the bread better. Then we order the lettuce wraps, they were ok. My friend ordered the duck and I tried it and we both really liked it! The vegetables were good! My sirloin....the steak itself was good despite being a tad overcooked for medium rare. Something on the plate had a curry flavor - it just didn't all go together well. Then the lemon ricotta cheesecake....we didn't taste any lemon, it was thick and weirdly dry for a cheesecake. It also had freeze dried something on top....we actually weren't sure what. Some bright spots - the food quality! You can tell that these are top notch high quality ingredients, and the cocktails! They were yummy! I just don't like the weird combos and what (to me) feels like being weird for the sake of being different versus just being good. Since I only come up here a few times a season I likely will go to our other favorites or try new spots.
