After exploring all the options, I decided on Townsend Gateway Inn because of their cottages. We stayed a couple nights and had a nice time. Staff were super friendly and check in was quick. We were given a couple goodie bags of candy and then made our way to our cabin. It's basically a small house, with a bedroom, bathroom, living room (with a futon), and small kitchen and dining area. It was perfect for our 4-person family. Air conditioning in both rooms, comfy beds, and black-out shades. Our only complaints were that the floors could have been cleaner and the kitchen should have been stocked with more/better utensils, dishware, and cookware. We enjoyed the amenities, like the pool and cornhole. The location was great, which only took 20 minutes to get to Cades Cove. It's also right on the main road in Townsend, which has some good restaurants. The price was a bit on the high end (more than $150/night), but I'm glad we stayed here as the cottage in particular fit our needs and was unique.

Anyway, both the motel rooms and the cabins are quite nice, and this coming from a hotel snob (I can't help it, too much business travel and it upped my game for nice linens, new rooms, amenities, etc.). Parking's an issue if you're arriving when the bistro is open. We were always able to find a space, but sometimes not near the cabin. There are a couple signs for "cabin parking" but they were frequently moved, taken down, or ignored. Something the lodge should really fix. Roomy living space, couch, several more upholstered chairs, dining table. Wood burning fireplace (in season). Smartest TV I've seen in a hotel room. Most every streaming service you could think of, and when one wasn't there, it was a breeze to download and add. Full kitchen, basic plates, glasses, silverware. Paper towels provided. Microwave, oven, toaster, dishwasher, full fridge. A few ice trays. If you plan to do your own cooking, plan to take anything more you need. Roomy bathroom, walk in shower, great water pressure. Bed was wavy when moving, so a little partner disturbance, and wife complained it was not great on her back. Ok, but could use a refresh. Daily service as you need; leave a card with what you'd like checked each morning on the door. Overall an excellent place to stay in Townsend. Enough issues that for the price, we may look around a bit before returning.

Our room had two comfortable queen beds, a mini fridge, coffee maker, chair, and one of the best AC units we've experienced in a motel/hotel in a long time. Everything was clean, comfortable, and exactly what we needed after a full day of exploring. The real star, though, is the pool. Actually, pools. They have two, and the one closest to our room was a huge hit with the kids. Add in the outdoor rocking chairs and fire pit area, and you have a place that makes it easy for families to unwind. Check-in was fast, parking was effortless, and the rate was very reasonable for this time of year. Townsend River Breeze Inn isn't trying to be a luxury resort. It's focused on doing the fundamentals exceptionally well: a clean, cozy, affordable place to sleep, swim, and enjoy your vacation. That's a formula that works. We'd happily stay here again.

This definitely fit the "not fancy" bill, but it was ok. At 3:30 in the morning the smoke alarm started beeping. We called down to the front desk and they said there was nothing they could do about it until 8am when a manager came on shift. They had no help to offer. Just expected us to stay in the room with it chirping loudly every other minute and did not seem to care at all about the inconvenience. Wouldn't even let us have a late checkout for the inconvenience.

We were able to call the owners and they either answered immediately or called us back to answer all of our questions. The cutest room was Critter Cove which had an additional crib sized mattress that wasn't included in the website description. The Bear Den has a glider rocker. Firewood was available to use in the fire pits at the restaurant in front of the Inn. We just used it and paid for it the next day. One caveat: the restaurant is only open for a few hours during lunch, even though they advertise being open until 7 pm. Plan to eat elsewhere if you arrive outside of lunchtime! We stayed for 2 nights instead of the 3 nights that we had reserved, and the owners quickly credited my credit card for the unused night. It was an all around good experience.
