Stayed in the Leconte cabin. Huge and comfortable. Was a little concerned when booking that it was right at the main parking for the bistro and events, but it still felt nestled back in the woods. Parking's an issue if you're arriving when the bistro is open. We were always able to find a space, but sometimes not near the cabin. There are a couple signs for "cabin parking" but they were frequently moved, taken down, or ignored. Something the lodge should really fix. Roomy living space, couch, several more upholstered chairs, dining table. Wood burning fireplace (in season). Smartest TV I've seen in a hotel room. Most every streaming service you could think of, and when one wasn't there, it was a breeze to download and add. Full kitchen, basic plates, glasses, silverware. Paper towels provided. Microwave, oven, toaster, dishwasher, full fridge. A few ice trays. If you plan to do your own cooking, plan to take anything more you need. Roomy bathroom, walk in shower, great water pressure. Bed was wavy when moving, so a little partner disturbance, and wife complained it was not great on her back. Ok, but could use a refresh. Daily service as you need; leave a card with what you'd like checked each morning on the door. Overall an excellent place to stay in Townsend. Enough issues that for the price, we may look around a bit before returning. read more

We used to come to Dancing Bear several times a year when we lived in TN. This is our first visit since moving away 10 years ago and I wish that I I had just retained the memories and never come here again. I am writing this review on day one and I am stuck here for the next three days. Being surprised by me experience so far, I started reading these reviews and finally found one with some of the same issues with noise, etc. that we are experiencing, only to find the response by the property trying to dispute that guests experiences. I can't wait to see how they respond to mine. We arrived last night to our "cabin" and I thought there must be a mistake. It looked like I was looking into a duplex storefront of some sort and specifically, I was seeing the side of the business not meant for customers. Unfortunately, this was my "cabin". The original cabins seem to still be here, but these are new additions. Imagine you wanted to slap up some shacks as cheaply and quickly as possible to just cram people in, this is what you would end up with. Here are some amenities to look forward to: You will have a seating area that is basically your kitchen, a bathroom in between and then a bedroom in back where, if you love firm beds, prepare to be amazed. And don't forget, you will get to hear every footstep, syllable and cough of your neighbors on the other side of your paper thin wall! What an opportunity to make new friends! And just for good measure, you can awake to the sounds of housekeeping next door sounding like they are working on a demolition project as well as there constant driving up and down the road in front of your "cabin" on the gravel road. We went to dinner in their award winning restaurant last night. I wonder if the judges are the staff and owners in these competitions? I only mock this because when we dined here before, the food was art. The meals were unforgettable and memories you would discuss for years. I may discuss last nights meal for years, but not for the same reasons. To be fair, my wife had the mussels which she said were amazing. I settled on two shareables, the beef tips and the pork belly with Brussels. The beef tips were edible but if felt like someone was trying to take some beef trimmings and fancy them up to look like a real chef came up with something innovative. The pork belly was ghastly. I have had and made pork belly for years and this was embarrassing. It was 1 inch of un-rendered fat with a shaving of meat attached drowned in a spicy sauce in the hopes you wouldn't notice you were chewing on the same bite ten minutes later. Further, our server was one of those than cannot stop talking. For goodness sake, you may just as well pull up a chair and order something. I was worried this one might just follow us back to our room. This used to be owned by Blackberry Farm, but apparently was sold to some family who has destroyed what was once a true gem. This used to be one of the only places in this region that wasn't a tourist trap. I read the reviews of late here, and I can only think these are from people who never got to experience what this place once was and who would be just as happy at one of the tourist dives in Gatlinburg. I was taking a few days from work but I see no reason whatsoever to not just work remotely for the next three days to try and take my mind off of this nightmare. This place is a hidden mountain gem! From the hospitality, to the staff, to the accommodations, this place truly is a little gold mine in the Smokeys. The cabins are just big enough to accommodate all your needs and we were greeted with a welcome basket in our cabin. We also had a hot tub on the porch which was a nice additive. The Bistro was a short walk from our cabin and the food was delicious (separate review). You're also a short drive to numerous hiking trails, Cades Cove, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Tuckaleechee Caverns and so much more. Atmosphere was fantastic...food was just OK. Started off with some drinks and then the charcuterie board which was very good, but sparse for the price. My GF ordered the burger which was good. Fries were a little limp and just warm. I ordered the trout and it was pretty terrible. The trout reminded me of some frozen filet of trout taken out of a vacuum packed freezer bag and just baked. Zero, absolutely zero flavor. Trout was made to look fancy with just a few garnishes. Finished off with a desert which sounded great, but really just straight up chocolate pudding with graham cracker and toasted marshmallow. We were visiting to spend time with a family member in hospice. Our cabin was peaceful, and private, just what we needed. The Smokey Mountains are very close by, and we did do the Cades Cove drive, very lovey. It's a beautiful property and we would definitely stay again. A special thanks to Christy, the manager onsite. She was very accommodating and kind to us. It's very clear she takes her job seriously and wants all her guests to have a pleasing experience. Also, there is a a great coffee shop onsite, as well as a delicious Appalachian bistro. We highly recommend both! There's also a cafe and general store that we didn't get to try. Dancing Bear Lodge is on the peaceful side of the mountain, as it says, and that is very true. read more

Just stayed 2 nights in one of their cabins. Ate dinner at the Appalachian Bistro. Both very nice! When I checked out this am, I dropped off the cabin key and my receipt was $200 less than I paid the booking agency. The booking agency had added charges for multiple guests and an $80 charge for administrative fees above and beyond the room charge and local hotel taxes. I asked Dancing Bear to credit the $200 overcharge and they said "there is nothing we can do". Clearly there is something that they should have done as they contract with the booking agency for a percentage of the charge. This is immoral and should be illegal, but once again the consumer has no recourse and gets financially screwed. Profoundly disappointed as I have a long history staying there and eating going back over a decade. Guests beware. Dancing Bear will never get another penny of my hard-earned money. Charles A. We absolutely loved our weekend at Dancing Bear Lodge. Everything was so beautiful and perfect from the beginning to the end. Townsend, TN. is the most quaint adorable town filled with lovely people. The cabin itself was perfect! It was spacious and everything was cleaned perfectly when we arrived. Large closest, king sized (extremely comfy) bed, a huge tub in the bathroom, hot tub on the porch, indoor fireplace and more! What else could you ask for honestly? It was sheer perfection. Dancing Bear Lodge has really thought of everything to make guest feel like they are living their home away from home. The area itself is so peaceful and quiet and the air smells so fresh when you wake up and step outside first thing in the morning. I mean really, it is true perfection and I couldn't recommend this place enough! If you are looking for the perfect serene getaway, book this place as soon as you possibly can. Wow, what an unexpected find! This place ended up being better than I even imagined! I was on my way to the area and looking to avoid the young Spring Break crowd in Gatlinburg. Townsend is advertised as being the peaceful side of the smokys- and boy it was! It is such a quaint, homey, quiet town. I rented the Jack Pine cottage with 2 queen beds. The room was perfectly clean. The beds just looked puffy and comfy, and they were! The closet and bathroom were both spacious, plenty of room for the 3 of us and our things. Everything was clean and well maintained. The room had everything for making coffee in the morning and it was good! The villas were in a different area and from my understanding, they are a more modern option. I loved the cottage with wood detailing throughout. The grounds around the lodge are beautiful, as soon as you pull up you will want to go exploring! Unfortunately the restaurant was closed when I visited, but it looked nice from the outside. At the base of the lodge is a small "town" with restaurants and a coffee shop. We went to the restaurant for lunch and it was delicious- burgers and sandwiches. The lodge gave us a card to be used for $10/person breakfast- we didn't use this because it didn't seem worth it to us. We drove to Cades Cove from the lodge and enjoyed it- it seems like Townsend is as close as you can get to the park, but it still took about 30 minutes to be on the actual Cades Cove trail. It's an enjoyable drive though! Overall, I HIGHLY recommend staying here and visiting Townsend! It's a perfect escape! read more

We came here for a family reunion and were happy with the accommodations. In contrast to some of the other rooms we saw, our room, the Sugarlands, was more modern. All of the rooms were clean and spacious. Our room has three large elevated and Elevated windows that are out of reach. They also have no curtains. The street lamp outside shines right in and makes it difficult to sleep at night. The natural light causes us to wake up early. There should be curtains. Our room is wonderful, but on a vacation, the aim is really to get a good night's rest. We were woken up at around 6 am from noise. What? This place is so quiet, I had to check and see wha the deal was. A new family was moving in to their room right next door. They were lugging their suitcases, slamming doors. The walls are too thin for that. Though they advertise WiFi, the WiFi hasn't worked for any of our 35 family members. One of us had to go into the city to get the WiFi from Starbucks to do work. Don't expect to be able to access Netflix here. Discovered that you get $15 for your first night's stay when you check in on yelp. But, you're supposed to checkin before payment "so they don't overcharge" the coupon says. read more

4 Solid Stars! My wife and I loved staying here. Their modern cabins have all the little touches of comfort to make you feel right at home but most importantly how comfortable the bed was! There is a ceiling fan in the bedroom and sliding glass door to enjoy the beautiful Smokey mountains with a complementary cup of coffee that was very easy to make. Fireplace in living room was nice but only operational in winter months. Parking was right out front and the hall to get food was within walking distance of our cabin where there was complimentary breakfast. We enjoyed even watching a baby black bear walk right past our cabin! The location is perfect to just disconnect from our busy days. They only lost a star for really bad internet service. While some of us are okay with turning off our phones, in this day and age, it's hard to not completely disconnect especially since phone data is not free. The router was in the living room and didn't reach the bedroom. Second small issue was the hot water for shower didn't last very long. Making those small adjustments would definitely get them 5 stars! Staff was also wonderful. read more

My first time in the Smoky Mountains and it was amazing! An AMAZING space for a wedding venue or for a weekend mountain getaway. I was personally there for a wedding and here were some of my favorite parts: 1. The lodge is only a 25-30 min drive from Knoxville airport. Being there for a wedding with out-of-town visitors was actually really easy and the lodge was not difficult to find. 2. The check-in office is visible from the road before you drive up to the cabins that are tucked away in the woods. Next to the office is a country store and cafe... I had an AMAZING pulled pork sandwich that I topped with sauce and toppings from their toppings bar. The cashier gave me a 10% off coupon that I was able to use at the country store next door. There, I bought a bottle of jam, hand-roasted coffee, handmade soap and chapstick... all of which I have since used at home and enjoyed very much. 3. Our 2 BR 2 Bath lodge was EXTREMELY spacious, with a hot tub on the back porch that faced the woods. It was very private and quiet. 4. Hiking trails into the mountains were a quick drive from the lodge. I did not go on one personally, but other wedding guests were able to go on hikes 10-15 min away in the morning before the wedding. 5. The restaurant on the premises had some of the most incredible food I've ever had. The menu had some of the traditional comforts, as well as unique dishes clearly created by the touch of a high-quality chef and kitchen staff. 6. At the wedding, the staff were not only kind and courteous, but FUN! They were dancing and laughing towards the end of the night after everyone had been served. They were completely composed during the wedding events and were helpful to the wedding party throughout the day. Overall, I felt they were hospitable and it was obvious they have a family dynamic. Oh my goodness can't get over the delightfully comfortable accommodation at the dancing bear lodge. A quick quiet getaway for the winter months, this was a great treat. We thought this place was awesome! A group of four of us (two couples) stayed over Valentine's/President's Day weekend and got a great deal! (Off season promo maybe?) The price was so good, we had modest expectations, but I have to say we were blown away! Staff was friendly, the cabin was cozy and had so many extras: robes, coffee and creamer, WiFi, firewood sheds out the front door, fire starters, comfy mattresses, nice big showers...) Townsend was peaceful in the off season, but was easily accessible to Gatlinburg if that's your thing. A couple things to note: 1) the stairs to our loft bedroom were very steep, so if you have mobility limitations, contact the lodge and make sure the accommodations will work for your party (this may have only been an issue in our cabin). 2) the hot tub was too small for four adults. Not a problem for us as our husbands wanted to watch golf and enjoy a fire... but may be a bummer for some. We are already planning a Smoky Mountain hiking trip with Dancing Bear as our base camp. We enjoyed our stay here. Right in the trees so lovely. Our cabin had a fireplace and comfy chairs. And a welcome basket! Lots of amenities. There's a little kitchen with plates, utensils, coffee and coffee pot and more. We felt pampered. Amazing bathtub. We were away from the hustle and bustle. There's a gift shop and cafe on the premises as well as a coffeehouse. Try the pancakes at the cafe - awesome. Great staging place to visit the Smokies. read more

We had a fantastic stay at Dancing Bear Lodge - the location is perfect and very convenient for activities in the area such as hiking and biking in some of the prettiest country side of TN. Our cabin seemed brand new and impeccably clean - the back porch with the hot tub is a great place to relax and enjoy the surrounding sounds of nature. Also loved sipping whiskey in front of the indoor fire place. Felt very safe with contactless check-in process and precautionary protocols in place amidst the pandemic. I can't say enough about this place! After ending up in Gaitlinburg on our road trip through the Smokies, we were horrified by the commercialism, crowds and massive number of chintzy mini golf spots. We ducked into a quiet restaurant and started looking up lodging in Townsend, desperate to escape the hell hole we'd landed in. I found Dancing Bear on Yelp, but no one answered when I called, as the office was closed (it was after 6.) So I called the restaurant and was given the cell phone of the office manager. I was able to book a place that night and as soon as we arrived it felt like we had been delivered to heaven! The entrance road winded up through the woods, flanked by a stream and budding trees. We had no problem finding our cabin which had been opened up for us and immediately felt a breath of relief. It was past dinner, but we ventured over to the restaurant where we were greeted with smiles and warmth and told we were more than welcome to sit outside by the fire, enjoy as many s'mores as we liked and a server would be out to tell us about dessert options. It wasn't long before we were sipping divine coffee, enjoying amazing desserts and chatting it up with Dustin, the general manager. We immediately felt like this is the type of place that cares more about their people than turning a buck. It's obviously a top down mentality, where every employee has a vested interest in the company, loves being there and is full of genuine happiness. After meeting the owners, Mark and Sharon, it's obvious why the staff is as wonderful as they are. Within moments it feels like you are a part of their family. Every question is answered with a "Yes" attitude and there's no way we felt like "just a number" for even a second of our stay. We happily spent two nights here blissfully. We actually cut our time short at nearby Cades Cove in the park so that we could enjoy the Bear for longer. From the hot tub, to their luscious King sized bed, homemade granola (restocked each day in the room), gorgeous atmosphere, Southern hospitality and first rate restaurant, we are already planning our return trip (and we don't live ANYWHERE nearby!) We wish this place all the best and thank you all profusely for such a memorable experience. Our chats with Dustin over the campfire, Yvonne for refilling our fireside coffee cups, Tiffany for accommodate my dietary issues, Sharon for a gardenside chat, Mark for making my dad wish he was your neighbor, and Nicholas for going over the top so we could take pictures! If you appreciate attention to detail and excellence is important to you then go have dinner at Dancing Bear Lodge. The decor is refreshing, simply elegant and wonderfully appropriate. We ordered braised leg lamb on rosemary biscuits for the starter, and it was wonderfully savory and satisfying. Next we enjoyed an ambrosia salad - oh my GOODNESS with a crazy good warm dressing made with a bit of butter, raspberry vinegarette, and toasted pecans. The entrée was Mountain Trout stuffed w/ crabmeat which was large enough to share so that we could finish with the fig bread pudding and pumpkin ice cream. Here is how much we enjoyed our meal - we left with the helpfully titled " lunch able " appetizer packed in a " to go " box for a hiking picnic and purchased a gift certificate for our son and his wife to enjoy on his birthday next week - FAB dinner ! read more

We are in the middle of our stay here and it has been great. We are at the Sugarland #2 and it is beautiful. Cabin isn't really the correct word. Yes, it is in the middle of the forest, but the room itself is extremely modern and has all of the amenities that you would ho0e for such as a microwave, refrigerator, TV, coffee maker, iron, etc. there is climate control and also a fan. if you walk out on the balcony, your view is all green and the wonderful forest. We are here for a family reunion so it is nice to be able to spread out but at the same time have the space to get together. Don't forget the free s'mores station at the fire pit. That was certainly a lot of fun for us all to meet there and make s'mores. read more

If you're looking for a quick getaway to the Smoky Mountains outside of the busy Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg areas, this is the spot. Beautiful, comfortable cabins. They even had the fireplace stocked and ready for us. They have an amazing restaurant there. Chef Shelley is doing some amazing things. Try the bacon wrapped scallops, you won't be disappointed. We rented the "loft cabin" which is in actuality a 2br 2bath unit, not a true open loft. Worked great for us as it was more private - but a warning - stairs are steep. Lovely rockers, a swing, and a hot tub are on the front porch, which face the woods. (I actually think these cabins have the best location in the complex; not that there is any really 'wrong' location, but these are the most private. I also believe these to be the oldest cabins, so they are showing a smidge of wear and tear, but certainly nothing noteworthy.) A full kitchen, small living room and a wood burning fireplace complete the ambiance - "woodsy" without being kitschy. A wonderful continental plus breakfast is served in the dining room daily, with a quite pleasant staff. Yummy and more than enough to give you a great start to the day! A few glitches cost them a 5th star, but they were gracefully acknowledged and I believe are not necessarily a true representation of the Inn overall. We would definitely stay again and look forward to the opportunity to do so. Restaurant is reviewed under its' own site. Note: Townsend is very definitely the "quiet side" of the Smokies, so be prepared. Do not plan to roll in at 11 (or even 9)PM and have choices to shop or dine - unless the convienence store at the local Exxon will fit your needs. read more

I would highly recommend eating at the Dancing Bear Bistro. The food had incredible flavor, the service was great, and the bar manager was super friendly and extremely helpful with suggestions. While I would recommend eating there, I would not recommend staying at the lodge. Upon arrival, noticed we had no hot water. Called the front office and they said someone was on the way. After an hour with no contact or resolution, we called back down and the office was closed. At that point we also realized the heat was not working. With no heat and no hot water on a cold night, we got up and out as fast as possible in the morning. Stopped at the front to let the front office know we were checking out and the problems that we had. The response, "oh, I'm sorry." read more

The positives: The food was delicious and the continental breakfast was also very, very good. The room was nice and clean, decorated well and it also had a Keurig machine with coffee. The bath tub looked nice, but we weren't able to use it since there was no hot water. I'll get to that in a moment. The negatives: We stayed in the lodge. Dancing Bear also has cabins, which I hear are very nice, but we slept horribly because any and all noises carried. I had earplugs with me, and that still didn't help. The hot water was not working while we stayed there. How anything was sanitized in the kitchen without hot water is a mystery. They did end up refunding our room price (although we didn't know for sure until we got out to the car and read the receipt; we were just told that we had a "credit". You would think that they would apologize and explain what the credit was when we were checking out). Unfortunately, there isn't an overnight desk person, so we weren't able to tell anyone about the issues we had when experiencing them. I was very disappointed, and I won't stay here again. The rooms are very expensive, and it's not worth the money considering that no care was given to take care of noise when the rooms were built. read more

My husband and I just stayed at dancing bear last week. This review is based off a few things which happened to us while there... We had stayed last year in the biggest cabin on the property, (leconte) and had a great time...it was a little expensive but it was nice. We liked the openness of it most of all. This time we wanted to stay in the same cabin so we booked it, it still has the same description there. We get there and the cabin has changed. It no longer matches the "open concept" description online. They put a wall in front of he bed with a tv so you have no choice but to wake up to not an open cabin but a stupid TV. Who needs more than one tv in a cabin??? Who wants to wake up while in the mountains to stare at a TV??? Change your description!!! We emailed and called the office, nothing. No response when we asked to move to a less expensive cabin since that one had lost everything we enjoyed about it. I also emailed them after the fact, STILL NO RESPONSE! That is some terrible customer service. read more

Great place to stay for one night or plenty of nights! It has the best of both worlds, hotel and cabin life. The lodge accommodates the cabin you stay in with fresh sheets and towels, but also allows you feel like you can make the place your own. The "duplex" cabins feel like more of a hotel stay.... All the other cabins feel and look more like a traditional cabin in the woods. Very private no matter where you stay. There is a lot of things to do outdoors near the lodge. A car is necessary to get around outside the lodge, but within, a pair of legs or golf cart will do. I will definitely recommend this lodge to anyone and would love to return! read more

Docking one star because the front desk staff wasn't very attentive while we were checking in and a woman came in to clean the bathroom while we were trying to pack up and checkout. We recently visited our son & his family & stayed at 'The Dancing Bear Lodge' on his recommendation. It was way beyond our expectation. We stayed in a one bedroom casita w/ fabulous bath. Spent a weekend at Dancing Bear for an event and was amazed by it. The cabins are cozy and spacious and give you that feel of a mountain getaway. The event was beautifully planned and the staff was super friendly and approachable. Coming in a close second behind the scenery was the food, which was exceptional throughout our entire stay. Our experience at the Logde was perfect. The cabins were very clean, spacious and adorable to spend time in. The peace and quiet and the proximity to the main street and the restaurants was sooooo cool, that we didn't use the car at all! The staff is just so friendly, and really knows how to please the guests without imposing. Real professionals! This place defines southern hospitality in every sense. I am more of a city guy, but after staying here for a few days, definitely thinking of coming back and reliving my short vacation. Nice rustic decor but loud with uninsulated walls. No lunch service but a good continental breakfast. Very polite but inflexible restaurant staff. Identity of the place can't decide if it is upscale or a Hampton Inn. Overall, not worth the price. read more

We stayed in one of their cabins for two nights and loved everything about it! Comfortable king size bed, plush club chairs, kitchenette, and hot tub. Relaxing in the private hot tub was such a relaxing way to end the day. Beautiful setting in the woods and quiet. This is a destination worthy of a special occasion or just for a special person. read more
