We traveled to the Smokies for vacation and made a point of riding bikes at Cades Cove, so needed a nearby place to stay. After exploring all the options, I decided on Townsend Gateway Inn because of their cottages. We stayed a couple nights and had a nice time. Staff were super friendly and check in was quick. We were given a couple goodie bags of candy and then made our way to our cabin. It's basically a small house, with a bedroom, bathroom, living room (with a futon), and small kitchen and dining area. It was perfect for our 4-person family. Air conditioning in both rooms, comfy beds, and black-out shades. Our only complaints were that the floors could have been cleaner and the kitchen should have been stocked with more/better utensils, dishware, and cookware. We enjoyed the amenities, like the pool and cornhole. The location was great, which only took 20 minutes to get to Cades Cove. It's also right on the main road in Townsend, which has some good restaurants. The price was a bit on the high end (more than $150/night), but I'm glad we stayed here as the cottage in particular fit our needs and was unique. read more

Clean, comfortable, updated, very nice folks working in the little hut of the main office. And as a bonus, they give guests a little brown party bag of snacks to enjoy when you're out hiking or fishing. Firepit onsite and a nice one at that, with about a half dozen Adirondack chairs. No restaurant on the premises but many are within a 1 mile. Rocking chairs in front of each room at the motel. There are also about 6 or 7 cabins and don't think they have porches large enough to accommodate rockers. We stayed in one of the cabins our first trip, and I believe those have cooking stoves? Anyway, both the motel rooms and the cabins are quite nice, and this coming from a hotel snob (I can't help it, too much business travel and it upped my game for nice linens, new rooms, amenities, etc.). Stayed here with family on a last minute unplanned trip to Smoky Mountains! The drive from Gaitlinburg into Townsend is so scenic and pretty, lots of winding roads along waters edge! Was worried since it's marked as a 2 star Inn via google reviews but was surprised to find that our rooms were overall good! Hardwood floors were clean. The staff was very friendly and even left little welcome bags for each of us in our rooms, there were 5 of us total. Easy parking as it is right in front of your room. One of the rooms had an odd smell, perhaps was a smoking room? Not sure. But it was overall a good stay. One downside is that bathroom is small and the air conditioner turns on and off all night. Last minute there was no where else left to stay so overall I think we did well finding this one place! read more

Just an overnight trip to see Cades Cove, we live 4 1/2 hours away so we wanted to stay close by. Didn't expect a lot from this place.. don't do like me and judge a book by its cover! The gentleman at check in was pleasant and gave us a treat bag to have with our morning coffee. The room was extremely nice and clean! There were amenities you don't find in the big chain hotels! Why is it so hard to find a decent, affordable room when you travel with a dog? This place may be the cats PJs when you aren't with pooch but with? Nope. First....Im a Southerner....40 is downright cold. When I book a room, I expect working heat. TGI apparently disagrees. They have these teensy little heaters set high that maybe do a great jib heating the ceiling but not the room. Now lets talk about these pillows. I could have gotten some comfy rocks outside instead. For the pleasure of sleeping in a frigid room you get summer blankets....at the end if November! If that weren't bad enough, you wake to ants. Yep...ants by the sink wanting to check out what flavor toothpaste you have. This is a road side motel that puts on airs (the Beekman soaps were a surprise). Can I say its worth the $120/nt? Nope. Great little Inn on the quiet side of the Smokies. We were in town for a weekend half marathon and chose this for its vicinity. We were not disappointed at all. Rooms were quiet, beds were comfortable, owners were very nice and accommodating and the rocking chairs on the porch were a perfect place to relax and watch the evening roll in. With the little local restaurants within walking distance, the great walking trail outside the doors a IGA nearby for groceries and the entrance to the park just down the street, we will be back for weekend getaways. read more

This was our first stay here with friends who had been here before and really liked it. We were not disappointed. The room was clean and very nicely decorated. They used quality sheets and towels and gave us a goody bag with things to snack on during our stay. That was so thoughtful of them to do something out of the ordinary for the guests. It was a quiet area and close to restaurants and the only grocery store that we know of in Townsend, TN. We were on motorcycles and they even provide cloths for wiping off motorcycles or bicycles. We pulled into this cozy lil piece and were greeted with a smile! Nothing better to see after 9 hours of driving! Pete got me checked in fast and answered all of my questions without an issue. The staff went above and beyond expectations. Our room had a nice view, the amenities were good too! Awesome walking path in front of the property connecting you to everything! Room breakdown: Cinder block walls, laminate wood floors and a tiled bathroom area with a closet. Bathroom has a door you can shut separating the sink area from the toilet and shower. Ac /heat unit was quiet and effective. Flat screen tv, lots of outlets. Bottom line. You can stay a lot of places in in and near Townsend but they won't be as good as this! read more

We don't have a lot of money and we needed somewhere to spend a quick night or two that allowed dogs. We actually chose this place because of the reviews on TripAdvisor, and we weren't let down. We were driving back from Destin to OH and I knew we'd be getting there late as traveling with small kids always seems to make 8 hour drives take 12. The office had just put the key in my room and left me a note when we arrived, they were about to go to bed but caught me at the last minute. All of the staff I met were friendly and nice. You can tell that the owners take pride in what they do. This is an old motel and most of the time when you stay in an old motel you get old motel stuff, smells, looks. They have spent a lot of time updating this place. New laminate floors. Somewhat modern TVs. Nice furniture and decorations. Bedding wasn't resort quality but was definitely above motel quality. You could see some of the details like in the bathroom where the baseboards were freshly painted and caulked and the bath was bright shining white. While they don't have a continental breakfast, they did stock a basket in our room with coffee and teas, muffins, danishes, chips, and snacks. I believe this is what more Inn's should do, we really enjoyed that. There were two things I didn't really like...our room was a bit cold. There was no central heat, just an old plug in heater that was turned on a little too late. It has a special plug that plugs into only two spots in the room....I wanted to move it to the other side of the room near my wife and the super cold tile bathroom floor, but that plug didn't work, room 17 btw. The floor was so cold it was almost painful. We ended up putting towels down to make it easier. The other thing was I wanted to leave our dogs out in the room while we went to the Smokies where they are not allowed. I told the maids we didn't need service but they insisted they had to go in and empty the trash and restock our basket. I couldn't get them to not go in the room, so I warned them the dogs were in there and may bark and growl, yorkies, but they're not mean, but that they would probably try to dart out the door. Later I asked the maids if the dogs gave them any trouble and they said no, that they didn't even bark, just watched them. She said she even petted the one that sleeps in a suitcase (Charlie, our smallest yorkie, loves sleeping on clothes). So, while I didn't really want them in there, it turned out okay and they did a great job on the room. Next time I'll leave a $10 in there with a note to walk the dogs for a little bonus, maybe it will work? Despite the crowd, the place was pretty quiet and I loved that you could hear the roaring river on the other side of the road. Rocking chairs out front were great to sit in and just look at the stars and listen to the outdoors. I think we paid about $70/night which was $179 after taxes for two nights, they charge $15 for the pets for the entire stay, not per night which is a plus. Beds are full size in the room we stayed instead of queen so they're a little small, but okay. We would definitely stay here if we visit the Smokies again. Townsend is a lot quieter and nicer than Gatlinburg which is the Myrtle Beach of the Mountains with equally big crowds. read more

We spent two nights here in one of the cabins. While we had originally reserved one of the King rooms, the owner upgraded us at no charge. Nice. The place has been recently renovated and is definitely not one of those tired run-down motels. The bathrooms are new and everything shines. Appliances are new and everything in our cabin was in good shape. We liked that there was a recycling bin. The owners are always on site and some of the friendliest folks you'd want to meet. We spent some time talking to Mike. You need to talk to Mike. Nicest guy I've met in a long time - even gave me a premium cigar someone had given him (haven't smoked it yet, Mike). The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is the low water pressure. I like strong pressure for my showers it was a little lacking here. Otherwise a great experience. Great little retro place to stay. Mid century originally, but new owners have done everything but tear the building down. They left the original floor tile and cast iron tub, but everything else is upgraded. Great bed, quiet, accurate (new) A/C, easy access, and too many cool hosting details to mention. Friendly, professional staff, municipal walking trail crosses the property, nice outside gathering areas, pool. You could find a better room somewhere, but not in Townsend, and not less than twice the price. I better stop or they will raise their rates. The best way to enjoy the "Quiet Side of the Smokies". Do yourself a solid and try out this quaint little place off the beaten path. The rooms are perfect, hardwood floors, newly remodeled and they have a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker. This place is off the beaten path just a little. But you avoid the traffic and congestion of the main drag in Gatlinburg. And the best part is you are only about 20 minutes from all the fun spots. On a road trip we needed a place to stay for the night. Took a chance and pulled in to this place. The cleanest place I've stayed in a long time & we travel a lot. I usually don't do the small roadside hotels. This place has totally changed my mind. I wish we had stopped earlier in the evening. We looked for National chain hotels. They were all booked. This place was so inviting. Had two rockers out on the front porch of each room to sit and relax. Had a fully stocked fire pit to use if we wished to. After wearing out the local chain hotel and not having friends to bunk with, I tried a new spot in the mountains, Townsend Gateway Inn. It is one of the old 12 unit, mom and pop, side of the road motor courts of the 40's and 50's. But like new. The Gateway is owned by 2 brothers and (I think, a sister). And they have personally renovated each room. There is no bulk purchase of Holiday Inn framed prints and surplus furniture. Each room was done independently with simple quality. We stayed in room 6 and loved the large space and the fixtures. Some folks called it a hardwood floor but it is more of the processed finish planking that you see at Home Depot. But I loved it! No funny odors or suspicious stains or questionable care of a mystery carpet. You know this floor is clean when you see the shine! A review on another website complained that Gateway was not serving coffee or breakfast early enough. Must have been a long wait as Gateway has no restaurant and you make your own coffee in the Mr. Coffee provided in your room. We arrived late and called from the outside phone at the office. One of the brothers came down to let us into our room. There was a basket of snacks and goodies awaiting us inside. After a day on the road, it was nice to sit in the rocking chairs and listen to the mountain stream (Townsend folks call it a "river"). You can go up the road a mile of two and stay at the Best Western and be just another Smokey Mountain tourist or you can pick the Townsend Gateway Inn where you are treated like a special guest of the coziest little inn near the gates of Cades Cove. read more

How great it was finding this cute, clean and quiet little place. From the minute we walked in to check vacancy to the time we checked out the next morning, management was exceptional. We needed two folding beds for the children traveling with us and they brought them right away, along with welcome baskets full of goodies for each of our three rooms.
