Tenderloin sandwich
Allan A.

What a wonderful discovery. My beef tenderloin sandwich was tender, cooked to perfection, and tasty. The onion rings which accompanied this dish were fried to golden perfection. The service was attentive. This appears to be a local place and is bar food at its best.

We ordered take out. It is fairly small and was packed. I had the huge blackened tenderloin steak,$18.00. It was cooked as I had ordered, medium rare. It was excellent. Wife had the shrimp poboy, $12. It had plenty of moist and tasty shrimp. We definitely will return.

Stopped here at the last minute - never even heard of this place, thought it looked like a good local place. We walked in and were a bit surprised at how small the place is - maybe 12 tables? That's not a problem, two things that we didn't like were the noise level (not recommended for a date) abc the spaces between the tables were ridiculously tight. Getting up to go to the bathroom was kind of uncomfortable, squeezing behind strangers to move about. Even our waitress had to turn sideways and she commented on how narrow it was for her... Onto the food, we both ordered the grilled shrimp. A dozen shrimp with two sides were $16 each. The shrimp were okay, nothing to be wowed by. The Mediterranean veggies were gross. I had a few of the mushrooms, that's all. Side salad was average, ranch was ok. My husband liked his onion rings a lot. Overall, just not that great a meal. It was average, hence the 3/5. A bit too loud and very cramped. Our server, however, was very sweet and attentive. Hard for her to shine in a squished, loud environment with just meh food. Think this is a one and done for us. Bill was $35 plus tip.

My husband and I decided to have a low key Valentine's and decided on this place to go to. It was perfect, it was so cute and they had a great variety of food. The prices were great, and our waitress was so friendly and always filling up our waters and checking on us. Our food came out super quick and everything was delicious! We will definitely be back!

So I'm not really sure how I've been living so close to this place for 13 years and never thought about visiting! Well, thanks to quarantine I had the opportunity to try this local gem hidden in a shopping plaza I visit often. River Pub is in the same plaza as Food Lion and Ace Hardware in North Raleigh. I decided to place my order over the phone and pick up a couple of weeks ago. Placing the order and picking up we're both a breeze. When I got home I opened my deliciousness. I ordered a Shrimp Po boy with house made fries. It was sooo good. Shrimp cooked perfectly and sandwich very well made. Fries were very tasty! A bit on the greasy side much but nothing a little pat of a paper towel can't take care of . I seriously enjoyed it so much that we decided to revisit the following week. This time enjoying the River chicken and cheese and the Ham and Swiss on a Kaiser roll. One with a side of tots (so good-nice crunch and so full of flavor)the other with onion rings. Again, slam dunk! The chicken and cheese had plenty of everything and so cheesy! The ham and Swiss was great too just a little too much ham for my taste. All around this place is excellent and I can't wait till this quarantine is over so I can revisit this place and stay to enjoy the food.

Yummy Chili Nachos with Chili on side so chips don't get soggy!

Hoppyum on draft and the tenderloin sandwich is fantastic. A semi-regular stop on our Thursday Night Bike Night bar rotation.

I dropped by one afternoon to check out this new pub in North Raleigh and I was delighted to find…read morehow cozy it was and how hospitable and sweet the owners, Kevin and Stephanie, are. The decor in The Winchester Pub is unique in the fact that they don't have all the stereotypical, tacky beer signage that others have and the bar is completely handmade by Kevin himself (it's gorgeous). Their selection of beers on tap is primo -- you won't see any of the over-served blah beers of other bars. Instead, you'll find a finely curated selection that boasts a variety of tastes. If you're not into beer, there are also a few bottles of wine you can choose to have a glass of. There's a small selection of canned brews you can purchase from the display case in the front of the pub, back of the pub, and in the refrigerated unit in the rear, as well as cider, spiked coffee malt beverages, alcoholic seltzers, and beer kegs. Surprisingly, there's even some bagged coffee! If you fancy bringing some pub merch home, there are branded mugs for sale. Above the bar, there are mounted TV screens, perfect for enjoying local sports games (especially European soccer matches on the weekends). Plenty of backed barstools surround the bar, and there's a line of round, leather-topped stools along the back wall. If stools aren't your cup of tea, there are two cozy leather couches you can lounge on: one in the front (by the entrance) and one in the back (next to a pool table)! If you're not craving any booze, there's a water cooler in the front of the pub and canned sodas in the fridge (Sprite and Coke). If you're feeling playful, there are couple of board games on the one of the beer display shelves by the entrance (beneath the framed red jersey). I'm more of a cider kind of girl, so Kevin suggested a fantastic, locally-owned cider out of Pittsboro, NC: "Chatham Cider Works Highway 64". It was sweet, light, bubbly, and strong, especially at 10% ABV (so, watch out!). My husband and I both sampled the "Fullsteam Igor Cake" Pastry Stout (9% ABV), which was super sweet. Hubby ended up ordering the "Casita Home Sweet Home" Imperial Stout (10% ABV), which had a cake-like flavor, was super smooth, and not too sweet. No foods are currently served here, but there are some snacks for sale behind the bar and you are more than welcome to bring in your own noms to accompany any drinks your order. From the cooler, I bought and tried: - Brown Bomber Mocha Hard Latte - flavored malt beverage (5% ABV) made with 100% Arabica coffee and milk. It's recommended to shake well and serve over ice. It was soooo creamy, chocolatey, and delicious -- you can't even tell that there is alcohol in it! - Brown Bomber Vanilla Hard Latte - same as the previous, but vanilla-flavored - Sound Craft Rosé Seltzer (5% ABV) - super smooth and tasting of freshly pressed blackberries, I could not tell that there was alcohol in it! If you're looking for a cozy spot to throw back a pint as you unwind from work, you've found the perfect place!

Despite arriving over an hour before the match started, every seat at the bar was already taken. And there are no tables so if you aren't fortunate enough to get a bar seat, you're SOL. I saw one or two bar patrons eyeing me weirdly, like I was invading their home space. So I decided to just leave. Per the online menu, they do have over a dozen drafts available, but I didn't get to try any of them. So disappointing.

What makes this place special isn't any one thing, it's everything. You can easily lose an entire afternoon here watching a game, having a few drinks, and talking with whoever happens to be sitting nearby. With its aged-brick facade and wonderful old-world decor, Mitch's could easily be mistaken for a historic tavern in Boston or Greenwich Village, but the institution has only been in business since 1974. Movie nerds will recognize Mitch's as the spot where Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins meet for beers in the baseball comedy 'Bull Durham,' while Wolfpack alum will likely remember it as the spot where they celebrated dozens of basketball wins, birthday bashes and end-of-semester parties during their time at NC State. There's a story behind why I'm giving this bar 5 stars. My first experience here a few years back…read morewas so memorable that I'm probably bias, but I was just visiting Raleigh back then and wondered in here around 10pm on a Friday, found my way to the back patio and can recall to this day what I was thinking. "I think I'm starting to like this city...". The back patio that night had a vibe and look to it that I hadn't seen anywhere else in a long time; almost Austin-wierd/cool like. I ended up sitting next to a guy who was rolling his own cigarettes from a roll of Drum tobacco when I noticed he put raisins and dates in the package. We ended up talking about finer tobaccos and the art of roll your own (his experience) and my thoughts on cigars and pipe tobacco. It was a great first night in Raleigh. Now, 3 years into living here, I can say that it's lost a bit of that first impression charm but the raw ingredients are still there. The music is still awesome, the service is still very good, the patrons are equally as surprising from night to night. I would definitely call this a Raleigh staple and hope that your first time here was as good as mine.

I would say it definitely fits into the neighborhood and appears to be a popular local hangout. Even on a chilly day, the outdoor seating is very comfortable, feel free to take advantage of the propane heaters. The drinks are excellent, and the customer service is good, it's definitely a great place to stop for drinks. Cheers!
