A cool pub in an unexpected place. This long and narrow bar certainly comes with a lot of charm, and an impressive amount of indoor seating. I would say it definitely fits into the neighborhood and appears to be a popular local hangout. Even on a chilly day, the outdoor seating is very comfortable, feel free to take advantage of the propane heaters. How have I never been here before?! First time was last week and it's the cutest little hidden gem in downtown. Had a very old school Chicago/NYC bar vibe with greet service! It's one of those bars where you can relax for quite a while and actually talk to people. It's not super loud and obnoxious like a lot of bars. If you find yourself in downtown Raleigh, it's definitely worth stopping in for a drink or 2 or 5. read more

There's a story behind why I'm giving this bar 5 stars. My first experience here a few years back was so memorable that I'm probably bias, but I was just visiting Raleigh back then and wondered in here around 10pm on a Friday, found my way to the back patio and can recall to this day what I was thinking. "I think I'm starting to like this city...". The back patio that night had a vibe and look to it that I hadn't seen anywhere else in a long time; almost Austin-wierd/cool like. I ended up sitting next to a guy who was rolling his own cigarettes from a roll of Drum tobacco when I noticed he put raisins and dates in the package. We ended up talking about finer tobaccos and the art of roll your own (his experience) and my thoughts on cigars and pipe tobacco. It was a great first night in Raleigh. Now, 3 years into living here, I can say that it's lost a bit of that first impression charm but the raw ingredients are still there. The music is still awesome, the service is still very good, the patrons are equally as surprising from night to night. I would definitely call this a Raleigh staple and hope that your first time here was as good as mine. read more

The drinks were made quite well and as ordered but the service quality is severely lacking. Seeming more like a friends hangout than a customer first bar. The more senior bartender (Brian) whistled and yelled at my table to shut up; all whilst a live band is playing outside blasting a clarinet directly into a microphone. The only redeeming quality was the other bartender; he seemed to be newer but had a much firmer grasp on how to treat a bar and it's customers. Brian only wanted to take care of the people he seemed familiar with and let the rest go to waste. Maybe Brian was having a bad day, but having worked in the service industry for 10 years, this is no excuse. Leave it at home. read more

My first time here was this previous Friday - really liked the place! The style was super cool - with decor that looked that 1920s to 1940s. They have self serve water (which I always love because I am forever chugging water). :D And I asked the bartender for water before I realized that and she gave me a water without saying anything. Potentially, definitely a four or five-star experience based on the ample liquid refreshment menu, a solid back-beat and a familiar by way of comfy setup. Alas the service tonight, though mildly congenial, ended up a tad lacking in the paying attention to the consumers department. Don't get me wrong, no one expects a neighborhood bar masquerading as a downtown bar to It's a pretty simple arrangement, this one, and the bulk of the buildout seems to have hinged primarily in the physical accoutrements of the room and somewhat on the side of the beer. Other nuances were lost by virtue of the fact that neither of the two bartenders seemed to totally be in the game. Lots of regulars, and lots of friends who in turn know lots of regulars. Obviously Landmark Tavern is doing some things quite right. And if they could shore up the nuances of the things that don't seem to come as naturally, they'd be golden. Landmark is definitely one of the places I frequent most in DTR. I'm not saying it's always my first choice but I have a lot of friends that like to hang here and I dig the outdoor patio. The bartenders are always friendly and my vodka drinks are always strong the way I like them. This place can be a mad house late night with the downtown crowd. You will find a diverse group of people hanging out but I do think it favors the hipsters a bit. If you want to experience the Raleigh bar scene then Landmark should be put on your list. Go early chat with one of the friendly bartenders and get to know the place before you're forced to fight the crowd for a drink. read more

There's no better choice for my first review of 2013 than Landmark Tavern, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to begin a Friday night. Dimly lit and thin, it can get crowded and intimate quickly. This is what most would refer to as a hipster bar, with most of its patrons dressed nicely and there's no shortages of scarves and plaid during Winter. If you're looking for a lot of personal space, it's best to go on a weeknight where it's much more spacious. Landmark is the perfect place for groups and if you have a penchant for conversation, it's one of the best bars to be social. So get talking! The music is at an appropriate level as to not drown out chatting, but loud enough to enjoy. I love their choice in songs -- laid back, mellow and fun indie tracks. There were so many moments where I thought "They're playing this song!? Man I love this place!" Bartenders, even when busy, are attentive and friendly...and to further raise their hipster rank, PBR is on draft and cheap. The rest of their more sophisticated drink selections are on the moderate to pricey scale, but the rotating draft and nice bottle options make up for the prices. The back patio is very specious with ample seating and space heaters during the colder months. If you're a smoker, this should be your favorite bar, as they allow smoking out back. For sports fans, they also have a TV which seems to stay on ESPN, which is a good way to glance at a game to keep updated. I look forward to visiting more often this new year. read more

In all this time, I never wandered over and checked out Landmark Tavern. Central to about any place I like to go downtown, I have no idea why I haven't tried this place out before now. I am glad I did! Going inside, I like the atmosphere. It's a long bar, a bit narrow but very nicely done. Kind of that older day feel but with a hip and shiny twist which gives it a very cool vibe. It's dimly lit but it suits the feel of the tavern. The bartenders were friendly and helpful, no problem with service on my visit. Since it is summer now, I got to go out back and enjoy the great patio they have. The patio is a great place to meet up with friends, kick back with a drink and enjoy the night. This part was my favorite, and I plan on enjoying it again. The clientele seems to be pretty diverse, and I like that. No need to think you have to fit in one type or look for this tavern, a plus in my book. I like the background music they played overhead, not overwhelming with the volume, and some cool songs that catch you by surprise. Beers and drinks are good, no complaints that I can come up with on that front. Bottom line: Landmark Tavern is a great find for hanging out in DTR. The bar itself has a great atmosphere but the best part is the back patio. No complaints on service and drinks. Definitely thumbs up! read more

My first visit to Landmark was on New Year's Eve. I added it to my pub crawl, even though I'd never been there before. It turned out to be our favorite stop of the night. There is nothing particularly special about Landmark, but quite honestly, that's what makes it great. It's not a gimmick filled club or bar with DJs playing music so loud you can actually feel your colon vibrate. They don't serve food, so make other plans for dinner. But it is great for what it is...A local watering hole with a beautiful bar, competent bartenders, a satisfactory beer selection and full supply of spirits for cocktails. 3 stars only because I've been before and the atmosphere. Went in last night though to grab a drink and dinner. I found a seat at the bar and waited a few minutes. A couple came in and sat next to me; had their drinks before they even got their coats off. I was at the end of the bar so maybe it's more forgotten though it wasn't too busy at all, but I figured the bartender would get my order next. Wrong. I sat there for about 10 minutes without being waited on. The bartender finally came up to me when I put my jacket and gloves back on and grabbed my purse to leave. I didn't intend to waste any more time on that poor service. Hopefully if I go back I'll find it was just a one time thing. read more

If I owned a bar, it would be just like Landmark Tavern. We went prior to an event in DTR and felt really comfortable there. The bar feels like it has been there forever, but in fact, the gorgeous wood detailing around the bar is from an early 1900's bar in PA. While we were there, the bartender poured nonstop draft PBR. He said that Landmark is #2 in NC for PBR sales and in the top 100 for sales in the U.S. At the Landmark, PBR is $2 for a 16oz and $3 for a 20oz, half the cost of other drafts. There's no food served, only two TVs and overall, no frills. Come here to hang with friends, not to be entertained. read more

I must have gone on an off night. I wasn't that impressed. The inside of the bar has a nice atmosphere and feels like a neighborhood bar. No food is served. It was originally going to be a cigar bar, but they made it no smoking. Service was ok, but not great. The bartender was busy talking to regulars and it took awhile before we were served. I would recommend heading across the street to Raleigh Times or the Foundation. read more

Guess it's a Raleigh staple for good reason. Six buck vodka and $6.5 for a bulliet seems reasonable. This place is so crowded and noisy though, so its a little hard to hear a conversation. It attracts the after work suit and tie and then everything in between. Patio is filled with smoke, so it's not necessarily a place to get some fresh air. I was truly impressed with the bar tender with the super hearing. Maybe he reads lips or has a phobia of leaning in, but some how he could understand your drink order from above the ruckus and there was no audible way it could have been understood, but he got the drinks done right. Was pretty efficient and good with the eye contact. Made for super easy ordering in an overcrowded place. read more

I stopped into Landmark after going to first Friday with some friends. We had just been so see this really awesome street band, and Landmark was right across the street. We really needed a drink and some air conditioning, so we headed over. I thought the bar was really great. Landmark was very comfortable and relaxed, the perfect place to chill out, have a drink and talk with friends. It isn't huge, but it's not small either, and even though it was crowded, it didn't feel crowded in an annoying kind of way, there was still plenty of room to stand, and getting a drink at the bar didn't take very long. The drink prices were a little up there, but I sort of expect that from this part of downtown. They had decent beer selections both on tap and bottled, which I wasn't really expecting and they had several cocktail and wine selections as well. I ordered a standard cranberry and vodka, and it was really good, it wasn't watered down or weak that seems to happen in a lot of other bars. Everyone else seemed to enjoy they're drinks as well. There was a small outdoor patio area as well which is nice to enjoy with the upcoming summer months ahead of us. And I know the ladies will be able to appreciate this, for a bar the bathroom was really nice, clean, lots of TP and enough stalls to avoid crazy long lines. They had background music on, but this definitely isn't the type of bar where you expect loud music or dancing. It's nice to be able to just hangout, drink and be able to hear each other's conversations instead of shouting over loud music. Now don't get me wrong I love the dancing club scene too, it just depends on what you're in the mood for that night. Hipsters come in many flavors, as do their watering holes. I'd mark this one under the "classy hipster" category. The atmosphere is classic and subdued--dark, lots of wood, simple and a nice place to have a few drinks. The best way to sum this place up is to say that there isn't anything gimicky about it. The exterior is pretty unassuming, and therefore might be easy to pass on by. Maybe that's the trick here---a well-kept secret right on Hargett. The bar itself is really beautiful (as in, the thing the bottles are sitting on). It's a gigantic salvaged carved wood piece that alone is worth stopping by this place, if you like antique furniture and fixtures. I had a bloody mary, that came with a heavy pour of vodka and a pickled okra garnish. Not my usual drink selection, but a tasty choice for a Sunday afternoon. The service was friendly, and despite what other Yelpers report, I felt that it was easy to get the bartender's attention even when she was chatting with regulars. That's what a neighborhood bar is all about--the bartender will chat with the regulars, but you shouldn't let it put you off if you're not one of them. We spent some time inside, then migrated out back to their patio area. It's a comfortable pleasant place to hang out, and they've done an impressive job of transforming the space between their building and the parking garage behind it. All the brick back there is a lovely backdrop for the intimate, flower-adorned patio. All in all, a great experience. Call me a lush if you will, but I will be back again and again. read more

I got to visit this place last weekend and wanting to since my uncle stumbled upon it last year. I was looking forward to see the bar that I once worked at in a small town in Pennsylvania make its way to Raleigh. My family would be proud to see the bar was restored to its original look at a great location. Not only was the experience better than expected, the bartenders were absolutely the best!!!! They treated me and my friends unbelievably well and recommend for anyone in the area to make a stop at this fine establishment. The atmosphere there was the best!!!! This is your basic bar where you can grab a drink and hang out. If you're looking for a place to get wasted, this is your place. If you're looking to be in a loud, lively bar, this is your place. If you're looking for a cute little date spot or place to catch up with a friend you haven't seen in forever, this is NOT your place. Beer was cold. Drinks were made well (not too strong, but balanced just right). Prices were just right. It has your typical tavern feel...low lighting, lots of dark wood, alcohol prominently displayed behind the bar. They also have a little outdoor area, which I'm guessing is packed during the summer. Overall, it's a typical bar where you go to drink. I really have nothing special to say about this bar except that I can see it being a good "safe, go-to" place any time of day. Unlike other bars on Hargett, Raleigh caters to all types of people. They always have great draft selections, and they don't seem to favor one group of people over another. They have a wonderful patio out back, and their restrooms are always clean. I like this little place :) read more

I've been to landmark in the past but failed to write a review. I like landmark as it's a great place to meet up for a date or with friends. They have a decent drink selection and the bartenders are great. I loved that you could have a conversation and the music wasn't blasting in your ears however it was really dark inside. My friend and I sat at the bar near a lamp but it just felt like it may have been too dark. Maybe my eyes are getting old ad that's the norm ;-) I wasn't really able to see the decor inside so I can't review that but I will say that it is a great place to try. read more

Landmark is my DTR hangout spot! It's a shotgun-style building with plenty of bar space and seating. They always have a good selection of beers (mmm, Hoppyum) and great liquor selection/prices. They pour wine like you would at your own house (so like...10oz? More than most places but not so much that you feel like a total lush carrying your glass around). The staff is great: Gary and Jason are sweethearts! The patio is great bc: there are heaters when it's chilly, there's plenty of seating, it's right next to the parking garage, and it's dog-friendly! I don't even have a dog, but this is kind of the best part. I get to pet like...five dogs every time I swing by. So if you don't like dogs, I guess avoid the patio. But if you do---they hang out here :) I like it best during the week or on weekend afternoons; Friday and Saturday night it gets pretty college-y (read: loud/ crowded/full of guys that are wearing more perfume than me and are wearing sunglasses as an accessory. Hey...you do you!). This is an awesome bar to post up for a few drinks. It's cozy and dimly lit inside, so you can grab a table there, or head out to the patio! BYOD(og) or meet one here. He/she probably brought pretty cool humans bc they are at a pretty cool bar, so maybe meet them, too ;) read more

Landmark is my favorite straight-up drinking and chatting bar in downtown Raleigh. Get a beer and head to the patio with some friends with whom you need to do some catching up. Sure, it's hot in the summer, but the people are great. There are patio heaters for the winter (you know, those 3 weeks it gets chilly). They have rotating tap beers, but Gary knows what I like to drink and can always recommend a good one. And for a bar, the ladies' bathroom is exquisite. read more

There is a long, full length attractive bar and bar back, coupled with several intimate booths and table seating. Fun throwback music selection as well, depending on the bartender. You could walk by this place and miss if you're not careful! Pretty standard bar. Lighting is very dark and not a glamorous place to get a drink, but you'll be sure to meet some interesting people while you're here. Staff is generally pleasant and hands off. They have great outdoor seating that serves well for those who smoke. You can get to landmark through the Fayetteville deck. Not ideal for children but i did see a baby in there today so listen, no one judges. Give it a try if you want to go where Raleigh folks go weekly (and sometimes daily). read more

Well. I'd always wanted to try this place. Very disturbing. The first bartender was nice and gave good service. However, another bartender in an arm sling came over and immediately started cursing at us. We were only there for one drink and were trying to pay so we could leave. He was very aggressive for no reason using the F word. I've never encountered something like this. I've never been cursed at for sitting down and trying to pay my tab. I have no complaints about the drinks - but that bartender was having the worst day of his life and he took it out on us. I would never go back here because of that one person. read more

The Landmark is becoming my favorite bar in Raleigh! The look of the bar was inspired by the classic Irish Public House. The wood work on the bar is beautiful. I came here with a co-worker after she very seriously announced that, and I quote, "Gary at Landmark makes the best damn Margarita in the City of Raleigh". Well, don't tempt me with a good time... So off we went on a Friday after work for some Margaritas. Gary, my main man, did NOT disappoint. That Marg was tasty. I can't be entirely sure but I think it consisted of tequila and some juices of some kind. I tried to pay attention but Gary was chatty and there was another cute bartender cutting limes, so who knows? No pre-made mix garbage, that's for sure. We enjoyed our lovely cocktails outside on their small, but still nice patio area. Landmark is everything I love in a bar. It's dark, small-ish but still has lots of seating, nice bartenders that know how to do more than pour a beer, and a patio. My one complaint is that EVERYONE on the patio was smoking. I can usually handle a few smokers, but legit, everyone was out there smoking. I'm not going to suggest not allowing it out there anymore, because I'm an American, but it did limit my ability to fully enjoy the patio area. I'd come back regardless. read more

I have spent many evenings at Landmark and usually have good experiences. However, last night I had a subpar customer service experience. The bartender was well aware of my presence, yet he continued to have a long social conversation with a group at the bar, instead of serving me and the other patron standing near me. I became annoyed with the lack of attentiveness, so my friend and I took our business elsewhere. What a great addition to Raleigh's bar scene! I love this joint. So do most (all?) of my friends. The bartenders are terrific, friendly, & know exactly what I'm gonna order and have it ready for me as I walk up to the bar. Their well bourbon is Evan Williams, which I love. Good beers on tap too that change out regularly. The music selection is a good tasteful mix of indie, soul, pop, punk, metal, country, classic rock, etc. It gets way too crowded on Friday and Saturdays for my liking but on any night during the week there's a great group of Raleighites to get hammered with. Been here before drinks are average. Recently peeved over a 1$ cover to enter just so I could spend more money. I don't carry cash after I got robbed. Raleigh is growing but a constant cover seems a bit much unless you are restricting bathroom usage, which I can get.
