The most amazing fall salad, we decided to return the next day as well. I had the salad and added blacked haddock which was so flavorful. We also had the scallops and their burger your way which my husband said was great and he is known for his burgers. The wait staff was helpful and pleasant. Incredibly beautiful location across the lake from Mt Katahdin and thus caters to hikers since that's the Northern end of the Appalachian Trail. I had the NEOC scramble which was fine with it's spinach and such. This is a great base for others who may not be full fledged AT masters, but we walked the AT to some waterfalls called big and little Niagara on a stream called the Nesowadnehunk. This is a little way beyond the restaurant in the famous state park where Mt Katahdin looms. So take the car. Friendly staff, good food. read more

Spent a week in Maine and Canada and keep thinking about the meal I had at River Drivers. Simple, clean, healthy and delicious. I arrived at night so it was dark - I can't speak to the views, I can only comment on the food and service. I had a marathon the following day, so I opted for a special of pasta w/ grilled veggies & basil: while it might sound boring it was precisely what I needed. Healthy energy for a long run. Solid service, not too pushy, informative, efficient and keen: a great experience I hope to someday return to in order to soak up that view! read more

Hands down one of the best lobster bisque I've ever had! The mussels were delicious and plentiful. I could do without their bread though. Unlike the rest of the other reviewers we had exceptional service! And an amazing view to boot! Definitely take a walk down to the lake if you get a chance. The view here is stunning! We went just before sunset and snagged a table on the patio, and we could see Katahdin across the lake as we sipped our wine. The food here is good, too. It helped that we went in mid-August, so they had a lot of fresh produce on the menu (from their own garden!). The peanut butter/chocolate cake was rich and decadent (as you'd hope!), although it was a really large portion. My husband and I split it, and we still couldn't finish it. My husband and I went to River Drivers several weeks ago on a Wed night at around 5ish for dinner. We spoke to Jake our host and told him we wanted a table for 2. We waited for over an hour and a half with more than 3/4 of the dining room empty since it was a midweek. He asked us to sit at the bar while they clear a table for us. We sat at the end of the bar right next to where Jake the host stands and we clearly have a view of the entrance of the restaurant. While we're waiting for our table, 5 tables of people came, sat down and served while we were still sitting at the bar, waiting. No one ever came to get us nor asked if we needed anything. So we decided to eat at the bar and the female bartender never looked at us once after serving us 1 drink. There was only 1 couple sitting to the left of us and we saw she went over to them several times and asked if there's anything she can do for them. I got annoyed and went up to Jake and asked why we have not being seated yet while he sat 5 tables of people that came after us. He simply said he forgot. Needless to say, we will NOT go back to this restaurant who gave no regards to their customers, ignored us with their inattentiveness and rude attitudes. read more

Great little find out in the woods! Food is fantastic and great wine, beer, and drink selections. Had the grilled tomahawk pork chop and shallot mashed potatoes that were to die for. Others had the chili, butternut squash ravioli and poutine. All great dishes. read more

Ive eaten here twice. Its upscale, bar food and a little pricey. The inside is beautiful tho and the view is spectacular, it must be why. The lobster bisque didn't have a lot of flavor or lobster meat and isn't thickened--its like the consistency of milk. First time, I asked for well done wings and they still weren't cooked through--but they promptly refired them. Second time I had the chicken on a bacon biscuit and was good, the pickles made it! Seemed like it needed a spicy, maple type mayo or something tho. Its a huge piece!! but the breading doesn't stick, its definitely home made. But just like first time, i had to sit and watch everyone eat because my order was given to another table by accident--they promptly made me one tho. The burgers looked great and our meals came fairly quickly, even tho the place was full, both times. Look forward to trying some other stuff. read more

We stopped in on our stay in Baxter. The food was great! We tried the zucchini corn app and it was phenomenal, but a small portion, perfect for a app. Our sandwiches and the app were beautifully crafted and plated. Prices were just right on everything including the drinks! Definitely worth a visit. read more

What a wonderful way to enjoy the brilliant views of Baxter State Park while enjoying a creative and well composed menu. This was the highlight of our week in northern Maine. The lobster bisque was bursting with chopped lobster meat, the Caesar salad was well dressed with fresh lettuce, the burger was a beauty, and the salmon was delicious. Excellent dinner close to Baxter State Park. We did 4pm Wilderness Tour by NEOC (saw moose and bald eagle!) and then went to dinner. Lobster bisque is fantastic - lots of meat, thin cream. Baked haddock, grilled salmon and pan seared scallops were all delicious. read more

We really enjoyed our dinner here on our first night of our spur of the moment trip to Millinocket/Baxter State park. We sat outside and the kids could run around the open space and get out their "cooped in the car for hours" energy. The food was delicious, my daughter gobbled up her salmon in no time- a sure sign of good food. After dinner, we sat around the campfire for a bit as the kids roasted marshmallows with new friends. Lobster bisque was so delicious! With big chunks of lobster, it was creamy and not to thick, served hot with crackers. The fish and chips was meh...I'm not a big fan of bread crumb type, being from RI it's normally served battered. So its merely a matter of preference. The fish was fresh NOT frozen, which you would be surprised that in Maine of all places it can be! The decor and ambiance was great! Typical Maine decor with a moose head on the wall, and novelty items to purchase. What caught my eye was the copper top tables, clay pots for the sugar packets, a comfy couch in the middle of the restaurant, and a full bar. The waitstaff was pleasant and attentative. My family and I went here in June 2010 for my 18th birthday after going on a moose tour on lake Millinocket. Everything was absolutely delicious. The chef even picked herbs from the little garden out back. Can't get fresher than that! One dish had these little yellow patty-pan squash and other crisp tender veggies in a fantastic sauce with pasta. My brother and I each had a Caesar salad and clam chowder that was probably the best I've ever had. The atmosphere was homey and instantly cosy and the people were kind and gracious. Everything was just fantastic. We didn't see a moose on that tour, but we still talk about the incredible meal we had here. If it wasn't a 12 hour drive away, we'd be going here on a regular basis. read more

Not the easiest place to find or get to but was well worth it. Food was exceptional. The crab stuffed haddock was out of this world. Best rice pilaf ever and the fresh veggies were perfectly seasoned and prepared. Save room for dessert! Service was very good. Really enjoyed the live music; folk and Native American. We stopped in again this year after rafting. We just ordered drinks and decided to order nachos when we saw this huge plate come by. We were also told that the chips are made in-house. The nachos were just OK. The chips were thicker; almost like toasted pita bread. The cheese was just about melted and overall, needed more toppings. Jared salsa and sour cream in the corners was not enough to offset the dry chips and massive quantity. I think that if they added beans or re-fried beans would help with the moisture. read more

Severely overrated, highly overpriced.... You spend 20+ per person on meals that probably cost 5-8 bucks to produce... The locals said it was a classy gourmet place, but what they usually do is dress up pub grub (burgers, onion rings, fries --which were soggy and somewhat wilted-, nachos, etc). My friends said they do their steaks, seafood and other things pretty well as far as appearance goes, but I don't eat either so I can't tell you about taste. The salads were pretty good (I don't like how they're served though: a thin line on a rectangular plate), but everything else is either take-it-or-leave it or way too expensive for what it is. Speaking of odd plating, though, some of our entrees were on BIG square plates... How pretentious... I expect to see those in an Asian restaurant but here it seems out of place. Well "Holy O' Jesus" that was a good burger. If your looking for a place to eat on the border of the largest uninhabited piece of land east of the Mississippi River - well, ya ain't got a lot of choices, but if you ended up at this place - your gonna be happy ya did. It is certainly a bit pricy for the locals, so you won't see any there eating from this fancy menu. The crafty mango, spiced salsa on calamari - does make up for the lack of any locally grown or even local recipes on the menu (why no moose meat? Or baked beans? venison or land locked salmon/perch? and no blueberry deserts? ). Take a look at the walls when your there, cause the reclaimed wood is beautiful. Sitting outside for the sunsets over Millinocket Lake is a special treat (with some bug dope of course). A great culinary respite in Northern Maine... waiting to add a star when the menu reminds you more of Northern Maine in taste and not just jargon. Have to agree with the other reviewer that big rectangle plates seem out of place in the back woods - and wish they would embrace their location a bit more. BTW, if you get the "Twofer" (discount meals on Tuesdays, I think) - beware, as our pork and beef were overdone and chewy... seemed like re-warmed meat. read more

Was in town visiting my mother and decided to take her out to lunch here. The food was really delicious - really tasty crab cakes, super fresh ingredients, very well prepared. Bottom line, the chef and the spot on the lake is the reason to go here. The reason not to go here is the service. Our waitress was downright surly and not once did she say thank you or how was everything. This struck me as really odd, since my hometown isn't exactly swarming with jobs, you would think that this place could do a better job recruiting servers that are actually nice and dare I say "service-oriented." So, again, go for the chef and the setting, but keep your expectations low for their service. read more

We were a little unsure of eating here because some of the reviews we read were a bit iffy and mentioned it being pricey. After eating there we would definitely recommend it. The food was excellent - the salmon was superb! As for the desserts - there were 5 of us - we got a piece of blueberry pie, a raspberry pie and an "ooey gooey" and shared them - they were all great. The only thing that we joked about was the dirt road to get there! The view was beautiful, particularly if you walk down to the lake. As for the price, it was pretty much in line with what we pay in central PA for a meal of this caliber. It may be high for that area of Maine but if you are from an suburban area it won't shock you. read more

My favorite place to eat after getting down off the mountain. Great food, great service, great atmosphere.

Drinks were good, the bartender was quick and attentive while we waited for our table. However, our server was awful. Young girl with curly blonde hair, never introduced herself, smiled and barely spoke, she walked up to our table and said "Are those drinks paid for?" and when we said "yes" she said "Are you ready to order" she aggressively threw down plates and bread and aggressively picked up plates (when she actually decided to come to our table) left our glasses empty consistently, we had to chase her down to get refills even on water. The only time she smiled was when we said we didn't want our bill separated. It felt like she didn't want to work and was annoyed that we were there. We had a really nice day rafting and we were looking forward to a fun meal but she kind of spoiled it for everyone. Food was okay, overcooked Haddock and very bland rice, not worth the price. Pretty views, but overall everything was sub-par. read more
