Our most recent visit was as usual a positive experience. It was our traditional late spring breakfast to welcome a friend after her drive north for her summer residence here. Part of the tradition is a cup of hot cocoa because, even though the weather was quite warm when she arrived, the first time we did this it was her late-winter transition north. This time we were so impressed by the new and larger specialty coffee/cocoa mugs that I took a picture of it. Typical Yelper, I know! Related to that, I have also added the drinks portion of the menu, which I had missed when I added menu pictures. The service and the food were good, as usual. I went with the breakfast sandwich and home fries special. I pay a small up charge to have it in one of their large biscuits. It comes with home fries and so is one of the lowest priced meals available here, though I added a side of corned beef hash because I knew I would be bringing some home anyway. Their hash could be from a can for all I know, but I really like the way they grill it and wish I could replicate it at home. I suspect it is the absurdly hot temperature their grill reaches. My wife wasn't able to eat much of her meal of burrito and home fries, but her appetite and taste buds have undergone a transformation over the past several months, so this is situation normal. She ordered a rhubarb muffin to complement her meal and her leftovers joined mine in the takeout container we brought with us. The muffin was fine, though the rhubarb seemed a bit sparse. This from rhubarb lovers, mind you. Our newly arrived friend enjoyed her egg white veggie omelette just fine.

We ordered the pulled pork, sausage, chili, and corn on the cob, and every bite was phenomenal. When I complimented the owners, they kindly brought over a rib for me to try. Up until that moment, I would've bet good money that I didn't like ribs. Turns out I just hadn't met the right rib. The food was incredible, but the owners were even better. Genuine, welcoming, salt-of-the-earth people who make you feel less like a customer and more like a guest at their table. Finding BBQ this good in Maine feels like spotting a longhorn in a moose yard. If you're anywhere near the Moosehead Lake region, make the trip. Just be warned: this place may ruin other BBQ for you!

We stayed 2 nights in a cabin here and it was infested in bedbugs. The first night we saw a brown bug crawling on the pillow, and laughed it off, joking, what if it was bed bugs? The next night there were more. Everywhere. My partner reassured me it couldn't be - the cabins are generally quite clean and beautiful- but I looked up what they look like and they were 100% bedbugs. When we got home I had the worst bites I have ever had. I went to urgent care because I was so alarmed. We had been hiking in the woods, maybe it was regular bug bites? It was bedbug bites. And they were brutal. The "breakfast lunch and dinner" triple bite thing? Not a joke. My legs and neck were covered in welts for several weeks. The food is.... I mean, they're trying their best, but at this point I'm not sure they should have a kitchen. The bar is kind of fun, and it's locals wanting to do karaoke (we love!), but it's very much a "get out if you're not here every night" vibe. We are from small town Maine, we are outdoors people, we get it- and I get it- but, skip. Skip skip skip. Bedbug city and raw chicken city. I'm sorry.

Yet indeed, I have no revelations or big reveals after revisiting this popular local haunt. The ice cream is still very good and the window service polite and capable. We also recently decided on a rare sit down meal here. We fancied some seafood for a change of pace and rather than driving a dozen or more miles away to frequent our favorite seafood restaurant, we opted to eat locally. And besides, we had tried Lakeshore's clams and scallops when we first moved here and liked them. So one of us ordered the scallop platter and the other clams (full-bellied of course). The servings were slightly smaller than at our favorite place, but also a bit less expensive, so it is a choice whether you would rather take some home for a second meal or save a few dollars in the short term. As we remembered, the food was good, so no complaints. If I push the issue, I have to say the meal didn't quite live up to the other restaurant, but that is why we have fave places, isn't it? It is only logical to occasionally test to see if others are ready to take over top spot! But there have a varied menu. And as a side note, the town of Dexter has implemented a remarkable renewal and improvement project of the neighboring beach and facilities, including building a new covered dining and activity area, which can be reserved or used more spur of the moment as available. There is a fair bit of parking , though very busy with locals and nearby camp visitors, and there are public restrooms just behind the restaurant.

Three tips for the owners to make it even more amazing: - Add at least one "better" beer on tap. It doesn't have to be some fancy microbrew, but something north of Bud would be appreciated! - Make the outside of the restaurant as beautiful as the inside. What a contrast when you walk in. Amazing! The exterior probably needs some love too. - Swap out the harsh (5k/daylight) lightbulbs with softer (3k/2.7k) to maybe make the lighting a little softer.

My wife wanted to try a special pizza they were offering that day, and I can't say I liked it as much as she (and others) did, but I suspect I would have liked a classic tomato sauce-based pizza much more, so it is just a matter of taste rather than quality.
