4.5 Went before a show, friend (member) had made reservations. Sat upon arrival, in the front area with great views and closer to the bar. Greeted right away- wonderful server (super upbeat, friendly, knowledgeable, and personable)- also had great recommendations. Kicked off with HH drinks- dirty martinis and for a friend a mocktail. We also enjoyed fresh bread and butter and then the spinach artichoke dip bread. Wow. So dang good- soft and melt in your mouth bread with hot dip and cheese. Delicious. For our meals: Me- Crab bisque (yum) and cold lobster salad (also yum- lots of lobster). Friends- Also had the bisque, plus a ceaaar salad- one with chicken. In addition, a couple sides of fries which were very good. Offered and took a shuttle to our show (and back), which was a nice touch. Parking was also free/validated. After a bit so easy time trying to find the parking for this place I finally found the underground parking. I came here for a long dinner with a professional group I work along with. The location on the 34th and 35th floor of the Wells Fargo building is breathtaking. The views of Jacksonville are amazing. We had the St. John's Dining room which is a large space for about 10-15 folk. The staff was extremely attentive and very good. They were getting me drinks before I knew I wanted them! This place is fine dining with some pizazz. I had a four course meal starting with the sea same seared ahi tuna, baby spinach and berries, an 8oz filet, and finally Florida key lime pie. Wow! What an incredible place to eat! The service is excellent and the food always pleases everyone. We had the grilled cheese and tomato soup along with steak. Both were excellent. The last time I had the hummus appetizer at the bar which was more than enough to take home for lunch the next day. The scallops were succulent and perfectly cooked. We moved downtown and had a membership at the Rriver Club for than two years. We have never once had a exceptional meal at this place and the service is slow as molasses. The windows are not clean, the decor is in serious need of replacement and the staff is being held captive by its dysfunctional kitchen. Frankly, I am mystified that the River Club has not gone out of business. It's not the staff that is at fault and one server, who has been working there for years, is great. Managers do try and they have become very adept at fielding complaints. The problem is the chef, pure, and simple. The quality of the meals is uneven though generally of better quality for large groups with private reservations. Getting food out of this kitchen for dining room members is glacial. Expect to spend 2 1/2 hours and still have to take the desert home in a brown paper bag. The last time we dined there for "all you can eat taco night," we brought guests and were mortified. In one hour and seven minutes, they served four so called tacos to each guest, each of which was the size of a human ear. We reluctantly cancelled our membership. It's sad that the owner has run this venerable old Jacksonville institution into the ground. read more

Located on the 34th and 35th floors of the Wells Fargo building in downtown Jacksonville. We had an invite from WF to attend a luncheon here and decided to attend. There a parking garage in the basement reserved for WF bank customers. Take your parking ticket with you and have your bank representative validate it for N/C parking. Make your way to the lobby and choose from the 3 banks of elevators to get to the top. Once on the 35th floor, you'll quickly be amazed by the stunning views of the Jacksonville landscape and St Johns river. You'll see pleasure boat traffic as well as commercial barges, etc... Our hosts had a welcome table for us to sign in and a private room setup to handle our small group. We took in the sights and grabbed a seat before the rest of the group arrived. A complete buffet for lunch including tomato bisque, several salad options and toppings to make an incredible masterpiece or a simple offering to accompany your meal. There were also fresh vegetables and choice of chicken, beef or maki-mahi. Save some room for desserts because there's a full array of tasty treats to put you into a food coma if lunch didn't already do it. Cookies, small cake bites, mini Key Lime pies and much more... The experience was first class from start to finish. WF did an incredible job setting up the whole thing from presenter to location and food. The River Club is the old money high society club. If you're looking for the new money club, check across the river. Located on the 34th and 35th floor of the Wells Fargo building, the club has lots of different options for members and events. Parking is located in a garage under the building on the lower level. You will lose cell signal - it's a concrete dungeon. Once you park, take the elevator up to the main floor and then catch the bank of elevators to the River Club. The 34th floor has a bar and the dining room and some smaller conference rooms. For an event, it's good for a mixer if people will be standing around. The 35th floor has two banquet rooms for events. They are decent sized for either a seated event or a mixer where it's an open floor plan. I'm regularly here for work events or luncheons for a group I'm a member of so I feel like I've had a decent part of the catering menu over the past decade. The food is usually pretty good, remembering it's catering so you're not getting an individually cooked and plated dish. There are a number of options that can fit any desired cuisine. The best things about the River Club are the view and the service. The view of the city is just gorgeous, especially at night when the bridges are lit up. Service is also top notch. There are always workers there to validate your parking ticket, quietly take away your plate or just be generally helpful. One time I was the pain in the butt person who requested hot tea instead of coffee. The server got a little confused and brought me the tea selection and a small pot of hot water but took my mug away. I just laughed and asked for my mug back which was promptly returned. Also since we're talking functions, I should note the bathrooms are very nice. Full length to the floor walls and doors so you actually have privacy. I wish more places did this instead of the creepy door gaps. read more

If you have money for a membership here, you can dine with the wealthy with a view only matched by one other place in town: Skyline Cafe in the Bank of America building across the street. (For all of us folks who don't have a membership but still want the view, that's where we go.) I came up here once when I heard Bill Clinton was going to be here to speak. (No, I'm not going to get into politics. I just thought it would be funny to meet one of our former presidents.) Too bad he was in a room somewhere and I didn't see him. But I did hear him giving a speech of some sort. I am not a member of this dining club, so I left after 10 minutes of enjoying the beautiful view. That said, I have yet to eat here. I am not a member of the River Club, but my company hosts meetings and events here, so that is why I am able to come. The food is set up buffet style, with usually fish, chicken, and meat dishes. The blackened mahi-mahi on jasmine rice was really good, but the chicken cordon blu was hard to cut into and after a few attempts at trying to cut into it, I gave up and left unfinished. The macaroni salad with peas and ham was also really good too. It was creamy, with the right amount of peas and ham in it. The desserts were mini but delicious. There was mini creme brulees, cream puff pastries, mini chocolate eclairs, and an assortment of mini cakes. Overall, it is a nice place to have meetings and events. read more

My husband got 2 drinks "something sweet," 1 with rum and 1 with something else... he never asked what they were lol. Servers were very good at keeping fresh food out. The potatoes and fish were the most flavorful of the dishes. They also had chicken, steak, and some salads. I tried a bit of everything but potatoes and fish were the best. Came here for an event and was only impressed by the view which is definitely what you are paying for. Drink prices were absurd, $8 for half a glass of house wine, $6 for a can of soda, $4 for a bottle of water. Food was weak, risotto and vegetables were overcooked, chicken masala was bland. Servers were efficient to a fault and the server grilling the chicken was repeatedly curt and rude to at least four people in our party. Bottom line, it wasn't worth the view and a lot of local restaurants have better food, prices, and service. read more

Although The River Club probably deserves a little more than three stars it doesn't, in my estimation, quite deserve four. As the previous reviewers have both stated, the views are pretty amazing. You would be hard-pressed to find a better place in Jacksonville to watch the sunset. The decor is classy, if very "old" in style, and the staff are generally courteous and reserved. I have to say that the one big disappointment of the place was, surprisingly, the food. Not all of it, for the appetizers (she-crab soup and escargots) were both delectable and very unique, nor the salads, which were likewise delicious and very impressively presented. It was the entrees that were the major let-down of the evening, primarily because it was difficult to taste the food for all the salt. And I like salt. I'm not sure whether the chef who prepared them was having an off night, but both the rabbit and fish dishes that we ordered were totally overpowered and left us guzzling water by the gallon. Luckily for us, the dessert we ordered, comprised of a sampler of three different chocolate dishes, was fantastic and helped counteract some of the residual salt. Overall, I want to give The River Club 4 stars, but just can't bring myself to do it considering the price and general self-awareness of the cuisine. The cost of the meal, while not exorbitant, rivaled those of other fine restaurants at which I have dined, and the entrees simply didn't live up to the price. You have to be a member to even be granted entry to this beautiful restaurant, or know someone who is a member that will take you with them. I am not a member, but know quite a few, and have been lucky enough to enjoy the posh experience this place provides. The atmoshphere of the River Club is a very old world, deeply Southern sophistication with richen wooden accents, very high ceilings, curved stair cases, marble floors, and plush furniture. It is located at the very top of the Modis Building, occupying the 34th and 35th floors of Jacksonville's tallest skyscraper, and has floor to cieling windows that show off a stunning view of Jacksonville. The food here is delicious, but you would expect as much. However, you don't really come here for the food. You come here for the status and the ambiance. If you ever get a chance to enjoy this beautiful place, I highly recommend taking advantage of it. read more

Came here for a birthday dinner and was instantly impressed with the service of the staff. The view is wonderful and there was some thunder and lightning so it was awesome to see it that "high up". The filthy martinis were SO good - olives stuffed with blue cheese, yumm! I ordered the crab imperial and I don't think I have ever had a crab dish so good. Everyone else at the table had a dish they liked as well. Don't think I'll ever come back here as I am not a member and would never pay that much for a membership. read more

Ok I was here with my school Christmas Luncheon. Again the food was absolutely wonderful. I believe everyone enjoyed the food. We had a wonderful crab chowder, seafood salad, nice crispy green beans, friend baked chicken, mild roast beef and another beef and rice dish with great flavor. The place had a great atmosphere. I would have gave it 5 stars but the serves where not being friendly as we asked for more bread they gave us some funny looks and one server asked another if we could even have some more.
