i heard this is one of the top 100 restaurants in canda....seriously???????
so, this is one of the top 25 restaurants in canada, 2024.....my question is: who reviews the top restaurants in canada? yes, the ambience cannot be challenged as one of the best restaurants in a city location....princes island (calgary, alberta) is unique, when it comes to city locations.....how many cities in the world have an island in the middle of the city and is home to a restaurant icon, like the river cafe? not many; i suspect. however, icon???? i do question...we just celebrated my wife's birthday on july 1st, 2024 at this top (recognized) canadian restaurant.....seriously? i could probably write a review that gets nitty-gritty, however, i will keep it simple.....ambience....fantastic......host/hostess....accomodating and genuinely concerned about servicing our reservation and table selection...the espresso martini....delicious......service.....questionable......why?...did not display an enthusiam, recognition, and genuine effort to cater to our celebratory evening....in addition....making excuses for lack of attention.....because excuses of "we are really busy"; blaming the kitchen for lagging behind.....very unprofessional....we had to get the attention of other waiters/waitresses several times....again very unprofessional...... our original waiter had a hint of sarcasm and arrogance when he said .."oh, did you order another glass of wine ?" we were not asked about our dishes' quality ( we ordered 3 appetizers and 2 main entree items, as well as dessert) until our main menu item ......the appetizers...the gull valley tomatoes appetizer was adequately visual and fresh, but defifinelty not worth the price for taste and portion....dear river cafe: do not be so pretentious about using local ingredients..... beware my fellow readers....the words-smith of advertisement bodes well for those who do not know any better.....the tartare was tasty and the sesame crackers added a nice texture that complimented the tartare... i suggest you try it... ..the last appetizer was the wild bc octopus ......please river cafe....go to the almalfi coast, or korea or peru or spain or greece and see how you should prepare octopus..you can still use ....what did you call it...."local ingredients to elevate and compliment the octopus...the seasoning and dry rub, as well as the size of the tenticle resembling a small squid and not octopus, was...how do i say, " not very pleasant to the palate....i'm being kind ... i wish you would take this item off your menu or get a purveyor that can supply you with a decent size octopus tentacle and a wood fired grill to properly cook this item...now the main dishes.....artic char...was somewhat over-cooked and the fogo island shrimp got lost in the millet, thus loosing its slightly sweet flavour....too bad....because both items (the artic chard and fogo island shrimp) are a good introduction to types of canadian harvested fish.... the halibut was way too dry and portion was unacceptable for this style of restaurant....again what a shame ...no other comment......i suspect, to many of you that have dined at this establishment, i am being too critical and judgemental in a negative way.....everyone is allowed their opinion.....i have been in the food industry for over 30 years and travelled to many countries around the world.....you have to try something for yourself....many will love this restaurant, even those with a discerning palate ...maybe my tastebuds were off this day......however, if you have some money to burn... go and enjoy the river cafe......for $350 plus for a meal( there were only 2 people in our party) from one of the so-called best restaurants in canada....try somewhere else......just my humble opinion......
