Love Ritchie Highway Deli. Food is very good and the owner is the best. They always sell out of their chicken salad.

Delicious gourmet sandwiches - the March monthly special veggie sandwich, The Truth hit the spot!…read moreThe sandwich shop is tucked inside The Gatsby hotel with only indoor solo seating on cozy bar stools with a window view and some outdoor seating in front of the stadium. It's primarily a take-out shop with a dozen or sandwiches and a few sides. The Truth veggie sandwich was bursting with flavor with sweet potato, crispy eggplant, juicy portobello mushoroom, and creamy lentil aioli stuffed between whole wheat bread. It was so good that I didn't even miss not cheese! Initially, I thought about adding cheese, but glad I didn't and stuck with the classic sandwich. By the time I made it through a couple of bites of the 2nd half of my sandwich, I was stuffed and didn't have any room or a craving for chips or fries that I typically get. It was a simple sandwich with quality ingredients made well. Crossing my fingers that the veggie The Truth sandwich stays on the menu and looking forward to coming back to try other sandwiches!

But I notice they had the B&W cookies on display and they're tiny, not what they show on their website. When I got back to the office, I ate my sandwiches and and a third of it was fat and tasted simple. I'm disappointed, I'll never eat here again.

We also really appreciated the friendly service and staff members we came across during our time there. The first day I ordered an everything bagel with veggies and cream cheese -- I took out the bacon and the price of the sandwich decreased by $3. The second time I ordered an egg and cheese everything bagel with avocado and latke. The latke was just okay and didn't add much to my sandwich. The everything bagels were really good as well with plenty of seasoning but I think they were a little tougher for our taste (a perfect bagel would be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, but the inside was a little tough and the outside wasn't crispy). For a coffee, two bagels, tax and tip, we paid about $32, so they are a bit on the pricier side. But the staff are very kind to the community. The place gets super busy around 9 am, so we learned to just order online the next time and our food was ready within 15 minutes. Other people and us on the first day were waiting over 20 minutes otherwise for our food, which I know can be frustrating. Very popular bagel shop.

This visit: a classic tuna with lettuce and tomatoes on challah. Fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. My only wish? A more generous scoop of tuna.

That was enough to convince me to pop into this unassuming carryout spot just south of Barracks Row. First opened in 1975, Al's is now owned by a couple who immigrated from South Korea in 1997. In 2004, they purchased Al's after owning and managing a restaurant in their native South Korea. Now, the menu is a mix of American classics like pancakes and food influenced by their heritage like the bulgogi steak sub. Open every day except Sunday at 6am through lunch, Al's serves all day breakfast like waffles and French toast. They make a variety of subs with care like the bulgogi one, which is one of the best in the city. It's carryout only so there aren't tables or seats, but the benches at nearby Virginia Avenue Park are great for meals. (There's a playground there for your kids.) The bulgogi steak sub is excellent, which is where they shine. Service is also noteworthy. The woman who co-owns the shop is kind and serves her food with a lot of care. To get there, it's about a seven-minute walk from the Eastern Market Metro.

They operate a deli counter in the front and a bar / speakeasy in the back. You can rent out the bar space for private events. Last night, we had the space (and a bartender!) to ourselves, along with 3-4 different types of sandwiches. There is something SPECIAL about their seeded Italian bread. The perfect flakiness and texture. I enjoyed the chicken fontina and Italian. The caprese was my least favorite--not sure if they use a balsamic or what, but the flavor wasn't coming through. Before I left, I decided to order a large chicken cheesesteak to take home for lunch the next day. It was a bit of a risk to order a hot sandwich that I would have in the fridge overnight but I heated it up in our air fryer/toaster oven for all of 10 mins and the bread was good (not soggy) and the sandwich itself was delicious. I enjoyed it so much, I didn't stop to take a photo until the last bite :) It's a decent size sandwich--I ate half for lunch (along with my own chips and veggies) and have another half for tomorrow so while it's not cheap, I think it's reasonable.
