It is truly an honor to write my first European Yelp Review and it was truly 5 stars (because all…read moreof them were not!) After flying almost 9 hours from Newark, NJ into Naples I opted to book one night for my mom and I next door at Hotel Gabbiano. Us Americanas are not used to restaurants opening after 7pm - and many in Italy don't until 8, however after attempting to camminare (walk) some steep hills to nearby-ish places we instead decided to waltz into Villa Molpe thanks to the kind reassurance of an elderly man who was at the hotel entrance who seemed to be working valet or security. We were the first patrons and the weather was splendid so we got first pick of two seats overlooking the water. Our server (who spoke a tiny bit of Spanish) appreciated our broken Italian and promptly welcomed us with fresh bread, a bottle of white wine and massive heinekin. I love olio con pepa (evoo and black pepper) so we had that with our bread. The fried calamari was fresh, crisp and fantastico. This was the first of three orders of mussels around Naples and the shells weren't as clean as they could've been, the broth was more peppery than I am used to but I realized its common for the region and didn't mind. Mom enjoyed her grilled steak which tasted like sirloin or skirt steak on the bone, the fries were seriously delicious. My white wine went down like glorious water and mom never saw such a huge Heineken bottle but she loved it. We wanted coffee to go for our early morning ferry but ended up receiving them as dine-in and didn't mind that either! We had a wonderfully light mixed berry cheesecake and ultimately got an espresso wrapped to go. Such a memorable first night in Italy and I wish experiences like this At least once in a lifetime for tutti (everyone!) If you need a tour guidess; ANDIAMO! Let's go! Lol ciao.

Forget Florence and Pisa and Montalcino and head south to where the coffee and bread are ten times better. This second story gem is down at sea level in the port of Pozzuoli, and I have eaten there about twenty times. Be advised: the menu is very, very limited. You can get a starter of octopus or a plate of olives. There are a couple of seafood pastas and risotto pescatore. Then you can get some fish or some fried calamari or shrimp. That's about it. But the guys who run the place are great, and I love to watch them interact with foreigners --- by which I mean anyone who lives more than ten miles away!! I first ate here in about 1986, and the young guy that was our waiter then was our waiter in April of this year, and one of the old cooks was still down in the kitchen. Don Antonio and his wife are long gone, but his son is still there every night it is open. I highly recommend this place for an adventurous eater, but don't go there and waste a table if you are wanting some sort of special fancy meal. This is where small groups of old friends go for good food in a simple setting.
