WARNING: This restaurant is blatantly dishonest, fraudulent, and predatory to tourists (please scroll to the bottom if you already got stuck with a grossly inflated bill and are trying to rectify it). The menu lists prices in the range of €8-12 per entree, which felt about right given that we'd been paying roughly €10-15 per entree at other restaurants in Rome and Venice, for surprisingly filling portions. This place had cheap decor and what tasted like watered down wine (first glass was free, so couldn't really complain). We figured we'd be slumming it tonight, no problem. Ordered a roasted fish, lasagna, and a generic meat plate, and also got a bottle of sparkling wine. We were pleasantly surprised when they brought out a decent sized fish, a smallish lasagna, and a big old plate of meat. Meat was dry. Fish was good (and we told them so--this was before we knew they were trying to shaft us). Lasagna was mushy and salty. We thought we'd be paying €60, tops.
Imagine our surprise when we got a bill for €230. They explained that the prices were per 100 grams, and that the meat plate is served in 1kg portions. So for anyone not keeping up, the advertised, listed price is **one tenth** the price they will actually charge you. Everything from the design of the menu to the way they described the dishes was designed to conceal this cleverly laid trap. The "per 100g" prices resembled per entree prices from other restaurants, and some of the food like the lasagna had prices per entree. The food brought out resembled the pictures on the menu, only bigger. On top of that they added a €15 cover charge AND a €30 service charge, none of which were disclosed at the beginning.
There is no universe in which €230 would be a remotely reasonable price for the lackluster dinner we were served. No family of our size would have ordered the absurd amount of food they brought out to us at the prices they charge. They're desperate for customers, and this is how they make up for their lack of customer volume--hidden charges, and misleading prices intended to trick you into purchasing more mediocre food than you bargained for, and paying more than it's actually worth.
To add insult to injury, the con artist of a manager that took our order attempted to gaslight us, insisting that he told us it was 1kg and that the price was by weight. He tried to say that everywhere in Italy charges like this. Nope, nope, and nope. After a very heated discussion we got them to knock it down to €150. I now wish we would have just held firm and paid €100 cash. I cannot recommend putting down €100 and just leaving because I don't know how the laws work in this country, and if that would constitute dining and dashing. However, I now think the best course of action would have been to hold firm at €100 (or €60 for that matter), and invite them to call the police to help us resolve the matter. I highly doubt they would want the police sniffing around their fraudulent menu and charging practices. There is no way their bill would hold up in any fair court--no meeting of the minds, no clear explanation, and worse than that, an overtly predatory scheme. I accept that businesses frequently engage in puffery, salestalk, and even up selling. But this was much more than that--this was a trick, plain and simple. My only source of comfort is that eventually the entire restaurant overheard our discussion, and hopefully the other patrons were able to avoid being victimized themselves. I am looking into how to report them for false advertising and other unfair business practices. Please don't let this restaurant sour your trip like they did to ours. read more
