Pizza, pasta and wine was we started our Italian leg of our trip with. Venice is obviously amazing but we weren't in the mood for the tourist trap. Da Roberto is a little off the main path and lived up to what i missed. Outdoor seating was perfect with the fan. Nice and quieter corner away from busy traffic. Service is slower paced as expected. Simple and good As Americans on holiday, this was our first pizza in Italy. We weren't too impressed when compared to what we are used to in the US. My wife ordered a Margarita which looked more like a cheese pizza, I got a Capriciosa (ham, mushrooms, artichoke) which was made with canned mushrooms. I've since had a second pizza in Italy which also used canned mushrooms, so maybe that is all proper and good. My pizza was gritty in texture and the bottom crust weak, and it tasted average. Service was fine. It took us a little too long to get our server's attention to get the bill, but that was likely just a lack of experience on our part. Nice place, outdoor seating, but a nearby smoker spoiled what was a good spot. Again, adjusting to the way things are in Italy. I'm giving a generous 4 star rating to account for our lack of a baseline on what to expect. read more

On our first full day in Venice, Gayle, Erin, Jim, and I had just came back from Murano Island and were ready for Lunch. We decided to wander a bit inland to avoid the St. Marks Square crowd. At some point, we encountered Da Roberto and not knowing "right from wrong" dining choice-wise, we took a seat at an outdoor table. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal here on a recent trip to Venice. We wanted something a little off the beaten path but not too far from our hotel near St. Mark's Square. This did the trick. Unlike some of the other establishments in Europe, service here was surprisingly speedy and attentive (and our waiter looked like he was straight out of the Jet Set), and the prices weren't too bad. We each enjoyed a glass of Prosseco (when in Venice...) and split a cheese pizza and a serving of lasagna. I agree with the previous poster that the pasta trumps the pizza. Generally mediocre but pleasant nonetheless, my namesake's trattoria is pricey for the portions but has a nice atmosphere. Next to a small canal, the outdoor patio is quaint and comfortable. Service was pretty good if a bit slow; that said, we did have to ask for oil and the bread was sparse. Each dish we ordered was rather standard, with little imagination and on the small side (pesto penne was simply that; some meat would have been a nice addition). For the price, there are better offerings, but it's hard to beat the location and charm. read more

This is a fine (and romantic) restaurant with beautiful linens and an extensive wine list. It serves grilled fish entreés as well as what I found was an excellent pizza. The prices are reasonable considering the location (close by St. Mark's), the service (couldn't be better) and how well appointed the tables are (only freshly ground pepper will do). There is no house wine, so we enjoyed a very acceptable Rosso in a perfect 375 ml size. (Duca Del Frassino Valpolicella, 13.50 euros) Now, what did I find so exceptional? Fish soup... priced at an eye-widening 23 euros. I expected a huge tureen, and got instead a reasonably sized bowl. Then I tasted - WOW! Very little salt, and so flavorful with a restrained herb seasoning. It had a single shelled shrimp, an entire unshelled prawn, what tasted like a big chunk of crab, and then some very mild, light, almost puffy (maybe breaded) white fish (similar to Japanese fish cake). Normally I hate unshelled anything in soups as I think shells give an unpleasant taste, but this prawn must have been fresh. I've had fish soups and stews in Hawaii, Seattle, San Francisco, throughout Mexico, New Orleans, Florida, Boston, and a few places in Europe, but this was the best I've ever had. Now I know you're rolling your eyes at that overused expression (BIEH), and I hate to use it, but this soup was just so awesome. My poor husband was underwhelmed by his grilled sea bass. In fact, he wasn't sure it was really sea bass, but it was acceptable, and properly cooked, so he ate it without further complaint. It's been my experience that many restaurants substitute when they run out of a particular fish. It's just easier than suggesting another choice. 95% of their patrons probably wouldn't know the difference. There's no way to know, and it's even possible that there are taste variations in sea bass from different world regions. What we should have done is ask our waiter if he could recommend the sea bass. This is the kind of place you could do that. read more

We stumbled here because we were staying at the savoia hotel near by. This was one of our best meals in Italy. Yes it's expensive, however you pay for what you get. The grilled sea bass was very fresh best I've ever had.. followed by excellent scallop (in the actual shell) And scampi! If you like seafood this place really lives up to the Venetian name of good seafood. Vitelli our server was excellent and gave us great advice on things to order. My husband had pizza and it was also superb. I can't understand the negativity toward this restaurant. FYI We are from LA and very will well traveled and know what good food tastes like. read more

On the way through Venice my fiance and her sister and I had spotted this joint and I took the namesake as an omen that we should entertain the notion of noshing here. We had two days in Venice and passed by it on the first day after cavorting around the side streets and canals (It is off one of beaten path to get to the sites of Venice (San Marco Piazza, Rialto, et cetera). We dined here on the way back in the evening on day 1. We were really wanting to dine at a joint just West on the other side of adjacent canal bridge called "Trattoria alla Rivetta" that is tucked against the bridge and canal. The wait there was too long by time we decided to eat (and after reading reviews it did not seem to fare much better than Trattoria Da Roberto). Of course this review is subjective to our experience: We were hustled fairly aggressively by the waitstaff when we were just wanting to review the menu and see if it tickled our fancy. This is typical of many joints no matter what country you are in, especially in tourist areas - even in San Diego, CA where we hail from. We asked for a moment and the waiter seemed pretty peeved. I was not hungry and only wanted a Spritz Campari. My fiance and her sister were starving so we sat down. We were presented our menus, no drink menu. We had to ask for the wine & aperitif menu and they seemed further annoyed. My fiance had seen someone with shrimp and pasta - and after reviewing both the Italian and English menu had thought the shrimp scampi was this dish - it was not. 30 Euro later on that dish and she is presented three mediocre sized prawns split in half, cooked in the traditional scampi sauce. No pasta. It was not so much of the fact that what was brought out but that they could charge 30 Euro for three prawns. Either way we were not excited. The clam and pasta dish that was ordered by my fiance's sister was enjoyed more thoroughly. A waiter came by and asked if we wanted a digestif or any dessert - we were full and turned off and very politely declined. I turned to speak to my fiance and heard a loud "bang" on the table to my right. It sounded like the waiter had slammed his fist into the table but I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he had stacked the three menus in a rather rude and aggressive way in his hands against our table. Regardless of his action it was extremely rude. Spend time looking elsewhere. Honestly there were a lot of personal and charming places way out to the East on Via Guiseppe Garibaldi that I wish we would have tried... Take a walk, its one of the most open streets in Venice on the East side near the large park green that you dead end at when you walk along the South side of the main islets. We asked for the bill, and paid and left. I took my wine glass that the Spritz Campari came in due to my annoyance and feeling extremely slighted with both food and service. This was also one of the first places I experienced a "covered seating" charge - chalk that up to experience. Its laughable however when you sit inside our outside they charge this. A very Ryan-air esque way of tacking on things to the bill - especially when the place was not packed with patrons. read more

I would definitely recommend going elsewhere! the service is awful, truly. all employees were on their phones constantly, it took over an hour to sit, receive 2 drinks (1 each) and receive the check (which we got 30 minutes after finishing our drinks) and then finally getting the check, it was wrong! which then it took another 10 minutes to get the correct bill- might i add there were maybe 3 other tables. It was our first night in Italy and we walked around Venice looking for a "restaurant" that would stand out from the rest. This place didn't exactly do that since there were hundreds of Trattoria Pizzerias there but we chose it because after an hour of walking we were just hungry and ready to eat! It was also in a busy corner which allowed us to people watch as we sat outside. We sat down and asked for water - natural for me and mineral for my husband. I also ordered a glass of wine and my husband ordered a beer. They served us bread and refilled it when it was empty. My husband had a seafood pasta and I had their Margherita pizza. Both were good but not mind blowing; I think I was expecting a "made by an Italian grandma" tasting experience. The bill came out and we were charged for the water, a sitting fee, and 12% for service. No wonder they say you "don't need to tip" in Italy - it's already included in the bill! read more

Our dinner was much less than expected this evening. The place looks nice with waiters in Clean white coats. However, looks can be deceiving. The food was tasteless especially the pork chop. The vegetable soup was cabbage soup without vegetables. The spaghetti fruiti de mar was cheaply done without quality seafood as the clams and miniature shrimp came from a can. Found this place while looking for a quiet place. Food was decent; wine menu was very limited. We had to go with whatever they had on the glass. Waiters started to walk around when we were close to finish our plates. On one occasion, my wife was asked 5 times if she had finished. Finally one of the waiters took her plate without asking. DO NOT GO HERE!! Very expensive and poor service, we had stopped by earlier in the day to look at the menu and the fresh fish that was on display. The manager or whoever was in charge gave us a business card inviting us back for dinner with a 10% discount. At the end of our dinner (which was over $200.00 for 4 people) the waiter refused to accept our discount card, basically saying it was no good even though the manager who gave it to us was there! Late November in Venice st Marks square flooded. Found this great place off the beaten track. The lunchtime traffic has passed it was raining this place was a real gem, spent a leisurely two hours Carbonara was wonderful. The gnocchi was fantastic, the cheese course awesome, the house wine was more than acceptable, reasonable price for where it was. Would recommend. read more
