"It's not what I expected....
I'm glad that we didn't go here for our anniversary."
Sometimes we're chapters or even whole books apart, but my wife and I were on the same page today.
We kept hearing about Rigatoni's (my brother and sister-in-law are fans, but they probably go to the one in Castro Valley), and finally ate here.
A few people told us about the food, but they didn't mention that you have to order at the counter (as my friend Vi states, "it's sort of a self-service type of spot without an actual waitstaff"). I partly write reviews so that people aren't surprised when they walk into a place ("Oh, I didn't know that you had to wear pants"). Anyway, I'm glad that we weren't really dressed up.
The staff was busy, and so a few minutes passed before we ordered (we were the only ones at the counter). There were 2 cashiers, and they were just average.
I made my presence felt right away by knocking over a WET FLOOR sign (I didn't see the damn thing). I didn't pick it up, but the woman bussing tables cleared it out after a few minutes.
The (free) bread is to the right of the fountain machine (there are about 8 sodas to choose from- I can't remember if I had Minute Maid or Country Time Lemonade, but I also had some Fanta Orange, and my wife had Barq's Root Beer).
Because we loaded up on it, I'm going to give the bread a score (8/10).
I really liked the sourdough bread (I had 5 pieces- all bread pieces here are small). My wife liked the bread with poppy seeds (I initially typed poopy) and the dark bread (I can't be more specific). To my surprise, I liked the raisin bread more than she did. She took a small bite and that's it.
I'm a fan of Great Harvest Butter. I'm glad that it's offered here.
Forks and butter knives are to the right of the bread (you can also pick up extra napkins). I was given a steak knife only.
The tables and chairs are pretty nice.
The restaurant is spacious (the seating capacity is over 80), but it's still hard to move around if other people also are (in other words, it's easy for someone to get in your way and vice versa).
It's best to sit in the middle or the back. We were near the front, and the grill is right behind the counter. As a result, it was pretty loud on our side of the restaurant.
The ambiance is good, but not great (a lot of framed pictures of Italian families adorn the walls). The restaurant not only appeals to families, however, but to people of all cultures (by the time we left, The United Nations had arrived).
The music playing inside was about what I expected. The songs made me think of Michael Bublé and John Mayer, which is fine.
The restrooms are private, but very clean and spacious (2 people, a man and his young son, for example, could use the men's restroom at the same time).
The parking lot is a bit small, but otherwise fine.
Note: All prices include tax.
Soda: $2.07.
The cups are pretty big, and I alluded to there being free refills earlier.
Garlic Bread ($3.02): 6/10 (my wife would give it a 5/10).
More cheesy than garlicy (on the plus side, you receive about 7 pieces, making the bread a good value). My wife kept wondering where the garlic was, and I can only imagine that it was placed in Witness Protection after it saw what happened to Mr. Spaghetti.
Our garlic bread was basically thrown on the table (I'm glad that my steak wasn't smashed in my face).
Oven Baked Lasagna ($10.96): 7/10.
More cheesy than meaty. My wife liked her lasagna okay, but it was lukewarm (my food could have been hotter too, and this is strange given that we received our dishes in under 10 minutes).
Rib-Eye Steak ($15.35): 8.5/10.
They looked good, but neither of us ate the fresh sauteed mushrooms.
My pasta tasted better than I expected (it looked like it was covered with horseradish). I was pleasantly surprised.
I really liked my steak. It was well done, but still very juicy. It was also flavorful and not too fatty or greasy. Nice.
The portions here are solid, but they could be better (I would have been happier with a little more pasta and a bigger, or at least thicker, steak).
Orders can be placed on-line, and there's free Wi-Fi inside the restaurant.
There's a Kid's menu for children 10 and under (the 5 dishes are each $6.57, and come with a Kid's Fun Cup Soda).
Rigatoni's Reward:
If we come back and present our receipt within the next 14 days, we can order Rigatoni Bolognese for $6.99 instead of $8.99. That's nice, but no thanks.
I want to try the Italian Sausage Fettuccine ($9.87). I don't know when that's going to happen, though (this partly has to do with my wife and I being busy people).
This is a good place to go for a casual meal (I love the breadsticks at Olive Garden, but my wife and I typically have an annoying server). The level of service could be better, though, and the food is just a bit above average.
