Riffs Bird Rock is hands down my favorite yoga studio in San Diego! (I have ClassPass, so I've checked out a lot of yoga studios. And I like this one so much I bought a class pack here.) Their Ocean Beach location is nice too, but really sets this one apart is its outdoor deck. I've always believed yoga is exponentially better when it's outdoors, and the vibes of this outdoor deck are immaculate. I love practicing in the shade under the coverings, among lots of plants and nice classmates (everyone I've encountered here is lovely). Every class I've been to here, from vinyasa to slow flow to hatha, has been basically perfect. Also, parking isn't too bad, and I love Bird Rock. My favorite thing is stopping by Calumet Park before or after class, since it's only a couple blocks away and offers a killer ocean view. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or you've never tried yoga before, I would definitely recommend checking out Riffs! It's both accessible for beginners and authentic for those who are more into yoga. read more

I've been here multiple times. Great studio, very clean and with an awesome vibe. I love being outside and I especially love the area at the back of the yoga space where you aren't quite under the canopy and you can look up at the trees. I also love the little altar that they have set up on the steps in between the instructor and the deck where the students are practicing. They always have it decorated with seasonal items and it's so pretty. I really enjoy the instructors. Today was Asia and she always teaches such an engaging flow. I also enjoy the classes with the live music. What I'm not a big fan of is the wellness area they have set up behind the studio in the grassy area adjacent to the yoga deck. They do cold plunge out there during the class and to be honest, I find it distracting. During today's class there was someone in the cold plunge in the beginning, fortunately that person was very quiet, but I was aware that they were back there. There have been other times when I was there when there were people in the cold plunge and they were laughing and talking while the class was going on. I get it that the studio is in the heart of Bird Rock that there is other noise from the street, from the taco shop next-door, etc. But to have the distraction in the space you are practicing in is not ideal. When I checked in at the front, the girl who had me sign the waiver asked me if I was aware that they had a wellness area behind the studio. I told her yes, and that I was not a big fan of it. She told me that they are brainstorming ways to separate that area from the front of the studio more efficiently. Hopefully they come up with some solutions! read more

Riffs is a very beautiful studio in a very beautiful area. It is all outside, so bring a long sleeve if you get cold. However, there are heaters & you are working hard so it doesn't get too chilly. The deck is pretty big and you can hear the ocean in the background, so it is a relaxing experience. We went to Asia's class and I recommend her as an instructor. It was a great vinyasa. The area is busy & a bit hard to park in so I am not sure how often I will get out there but I would definitely attend another class. The drop in rates are a little expensive. I would like to try the sauna sometime but it is $40 for a wellness session, which also includes a red light and cold plunge. Overall, I really liked the vibe of the studio & it was a great class! read more

I really don't know how anyone can go to any box when Riffs exists. This place is fantastic. Everyone is so nice and they offer such versatility from hot sauna, polar plunge, red light therapy to breathwork with live musician, sound bath, vinyasa to slow flow. I've been going to Riffs since 2013 when I first moved to San Diego. I actually started learning guitar there and then fell in love with their yoga classes. Riffs is my happy place- there is no where else like it. It's right next to the ocean, the deck is clean and beautiful, the teachers are incredible, and the people that work there are the nicest people you could ever meet. The owner, Steve, is very down to earth and a really nice guy. I highly recommend Riffs to anyone that loves yoga or wants to try yoga. read more

I don't typically leave negative reviews but since this place offers yoga teacher training - this needs to be expressed. Yoga is a spiritual practice that is deeply healing and one of the limbs of yoga is "do no harm." I am aware of late policies, and as a movement educator, honor different modalities, etiquette and studio practices. I am recovering from PTSD, so immediately asked if it was okay for me to join late and that I didn't want to disrespect the teacher or class setting. I'd rather leave and happily pay the fee than risk disrupting the class. The girls were very kind and instructed me to go around to the back of the deck where there was space for me to set up my mat without disrupting the class. It took me a few minutes to find where I was going as I had to walk past a restaurant, a food truck a parking lot and into an alley. When I walked up, Bri widen her eyes pointed her finger at me, and with the most hostile and angry energy signaled for me to go around to the front. I tried to let her know I had been sent by the front desk to come through to the back. I was trying to not interrupt and just make my way, but she would refuse to let me in. This was so off-putting, hostile and caused my nervous system to be completely dis regulated. I have taken class with Jess who was mindful of students showing up late (parking is crazy) and practice in whatever way that was appropriate/safe for them, because that is yoga. Deeply disappointed because I wanted to sign up for a membership but will not be back while someone so disconnected like Bri 'works' there. I am seeking a space that has teachers, not angry employees. *Riffs Studio* was my first outdoor yoga experience with it's "Bali" vibes, with it's tropical rain-forest feel, so stunning! This is completely outdoors with a pretty deck, fresh crisp air, refreshing coastal breeze along with the warmth of the sun. I fell in love with this studio taking my first class this past Monday. It was definitely a little colder as all of us students had long sleeve/sweaters on during practice, but towards the end of class the sun peeked out. The class was amazing as I took "Yin Yoga with Sound Healing". The instructor Melody had wonderful energy, and loved the touch of the instruments used for sound healing. We used two blocks, a bolster, and you basically bring everything out on the back patio with you. Taking her class was awesome and felt special with the unique atmosphere! The ambiance is so cool as though you're out in the middle of a jungle, but truly in the heart of Bird Rock.~ read more

Love their outdoor space, reminds of doing yoga in Bali. The only downside is the outside noise and sometimes smells (of food from the Mexican restaurant next door), so it's good for practicing staying present. It's a bit slower in terms of the yoga I prefer to do, but love coming here for slow flow classes, and classes with live music. Parking isn't too bad either. read more

Riffs is a fantastic yoga studio. The Bird Rock location in particular is just such a joy to practice in. There are several different instructors for the same types of yoga so if you're not so into one, be sure to try another. The yin and restorative classes are very healing. Be warned - this is an outdoor space and you will hear street noise, jets, fireworks, whatever... it's part of the practice at Riffs. You'll also enjoy the sound of waves and birds, a gentle breeze, and the warmth of the overhead heaters. My only wish is that there was a regular yoga 101 or hatha basics style class... What a great COVID friendly outdoor space for yoga. I've always loved both Riffs locations for an occasional drop-in class, but since the start of COVID I've really appreciated this Bird Rock Studio. I always find street parking, and I usually like to get there a little early to take a quick (1 block) walk down to the beach before class. You enter through the front and give your name to the usually very friendly front desk staff. There's blocks, blankets and bolsters, and you then walk to the back area which is a beautiful outdoor space, enclosed by trees and space heaters. I love the slow flow classes, there's usually a live guitarist. Such a great space to practice. read more

literally 1000/10. every single class is what you want out of it. honestly wake up early for the first class of the day because the sound of the ocean and birds is incredible and there aren't many cars driving so it is just the best start to the day. sound healing in the evening is also INCREDIBLE. definitely my favorite yoga studio in all of san diego. not a big fan of the OB location but I think only because the bird rock location is so incredible. read more

Great for beginners or people who have had a mental block to trying yoga (like myself). The overall vibe of this place is amazing the second you walk in. I am a high intensity, weight lifting girly and had all the reasons in the world to not try yoga even though deep down I knew it was good for me and my body. I drove past the studio a million times and it was referenced in a book I was reading and I took it as my sign to just sign up. I'm currently in a new member month unlimited package and have enjoyed every single class. Being in a rainforest setting just makes sense and I now look forward to it everyday. Hooray for Riff's outside classes! I'm visiting from currently cold Colorado and felt warmly welcome. I attended Brittany's Strong Hatha with Sound Healing class--a brief opening with Kirtan followed with movement (with intelligent focus on shoulder and hip openers). I experienced Brittany as being very embodied/grounded in herself and her teaching, which resulted in a beautiful ease. At one point she said that as a yoga teacher, part of her job is to offer some challenge, as that is where the transformation lies, and that "transformation is always awkward." I myself am a yoga teacher and embodiment coach, and this phrase tickled me. It's so true. Thank you for your humanness, Brittany. Always refreshing. Check out Riff's by the beach. About a year ago, I bought a 4 class / 1-month package. I used all 4 classes, but then never returned. One year later I found out Riff's has been charging credit card $59 each month for 12+ months. I didn't realize they started automatic monthly billing. I called several times and left messages, then finally received an e-mail saying they would not refund my monthly fees even though I had not been to one class in 12 months. I enjoyed their yoga and facilities, but do not approve of the business practice of keeping over $660 for services never utilized when I obviously didn't know I was being billed for them. read more

Their classes are good and the outdoor deck is really nice, but their website is awful resulting in many times where I was threatened with late fees or had credits taken away due to glitching. I had to contact them a lot about stuff like this. Their membership cancellation policy is also pretty outrageous, requiring two weeks notice to cancel and when I was two days shy of this number they refused to cancel my membership even when I told them I have a high risk pregnancy and wasn't comfortable continuing to do yoga especially since they don't offer prenatal classes. It was pretty baffling that they refused and their memberships aren't cheap. read more

Attended a live music and restore class. LOVED it. What a great way to end the weekend with a beautiful yoga practice under some palms and banana leaf trees. Only complaint was that the patrons from the bar next door were a bit distracting, but it provided a good challenge to my yoga practice as nothing is perfect. Had the amazing opportunity to join the Riffs yoga community this past weekend at their La Jolla location. Met the owner and lead teacher Karina and it was everything that we were looking for. A real yoga experience, not the new fad yoga classes you see everywhere flying through the poses just to get a workout. The people were amazing in a studio that truly cares about its students and the community. Top it off with the fact it is the only truly dedicated outdoor yoga space and I felt like I was taking yoga on a retreat in Costa Rica. Taking in the sounds and smells of the coast with a breeze running through the practice space while we practiced. It was an enchanting experience. Riffs has a bunch of great options depending on your practice style so you won't get stuck in a rut and can try new things, and the prices are on point. A true gem in the La Jolla community. I have yet to write a review only because I have had difficulty finding the words necessary to articulate how I feel about this place. The word that stands out is MAGICAL. This place is Peace, Love, Clarity, Healing. Yoga is practiced outside on a redwood deck surrounded by lush greens, and often times to live music. There is shade for those hot days and heat lamps for those chilly nights. There is no better way to practice yoga, clear your mind and connect with your higher self than to do so while listening to talented musicians play calming music, staring at the stars in the night's sky and feeling the ocean breeze on your skin. I have taken most of the classes and they are all great. There is something for everyone, whether you want to break a sweat in Karina's Vinyasa class or de-stress from the day and increase your flexibility in Steve's Yin class (which I have coined Sleepy Time Yoga), this place has it all. Riffs is a place so special to me; it really is difficult to describe. You must come check it out for yourself. My first class at Riffs was really a turning point for my practice. I was in San Diego for a work contract and had dabbled in some yoga classes in the past but Riffs really sealed my practice. The kind, compassionate and non judge mental energy of everyone there coupled with the peaceful environment really allowed me to see how transformative yoga and mindfulness really can be. I made an effort to go to a lot of Karina's classes while I was there as I always felt her calm and kind energy allowed me to really feel safe in my practice. There are definitely a lot of yoga studios in San Diego. Yoga classes tend to be more of a conduit to helping you find peace and strength within your practice. Some places work you out harder while other places have more of a soft touch.For that reason I belong to more than one studio. A lot depends upon what I'm looking for from my work out on that particular day. Yoga Yard stands out a for me because it's a bit more unique. The studio itself sits behind Riffs Guitar on La Jolla Blvd. There is a private outdoor practice area surrounded by bamboo and banana trees. Class takes place on a large redwood deck. Bulbs are strung above the deck area lending too it's ambience. There is a smaller indoor practice area also available if it's too cold out. There is something so peaceful about listening to a live acoustic guitar playing during a yoga practice. Some of the artists who perform there are truly talented. Depending upon when the sun sets you can do a practice and then walk to Calumet Park a block and a half away and watch the sun dip into the Pacific Ocean. If that doesn't put you in the zone nothing will. If you practice after sunset you can look up and enjoy the glow of the bulbs or the stars as you do your yoga thing. Maybe TMI but the redwood deck smells much better than most yoga studio floors. The evening practices that I take are a bit less strenuous. I prefer my beatings more in the morning. The studio happily supplies mats, blankets and props at no charge. Water bottles are available at the front desk. The classes offered include Vinyasa, Chakra, Hatha, Yin and Yinki. Like most yoga studios they offer a one-week all you can bend initial membership for $20. The people there are very nice and always supportive. Whether it's your first time or you are a veteran Yogi this place I think Yoga Yard has a little bit of something for everyone. One other thing. Not all classes have live music so it's a good idea to check before you go. read more

I walked in to inquire about yoga classes and prices and I was told to contact Leah, the manager. After sending a message and not hearing back, I called the studio. I asked if they could give me her email to ask her regarding trying out a class. She said she would send me the contact information, but never did. Tiffany, the girl at the front desk, said, "well if your looking to get a free class, we dont do that." I responded that I am not comfortable paying 119$ for membership without trying a class and I mentioned the promotion they had told me about that can only be found online. I would have been fine with paying for a trial. In summary, if Tiffany practices yoga, she clearly missed the point. The front desk needs work. If this is how they handle potential new customers, I can only imagine how they handle existing ones. Will look elsewhere. read more

From the first day i walked into riffs i was welcomed with a smile and treated like family. All the staff there are warm and friendly and remember your name. The back deck yoga space is really something special, the energy and peace is quite unique to riffs. I have taken a range of classes and have been very happy with the attentiveness of the instructors and quality of the experience. I started with limited experience and in no time i was comfortable and working on all sorts of things and learning. I have just recently moved to California and i have found my perfect place for some "Me time"!!! As a professional athlete a Pilates instructor, I tell people what to do and how to do it all day. So this is a great place for me to balance my life! Erica Brown was my first instructor. Her words were so clear and detailed. Not only did she give us a good workout but she really finds a great approach to connect your mind to your body and think about only yourself and what your intention is on the mat that day. You can't beat the $14 walk-in.. especially for what you're getting back! And the e $20 all you can bend 7-consecutive day new client special is a great way to see the beauty, uniqueness and benefit that you will get in this studio! read more
