Rick's is one of our favorite places in Tyler! The atmosphere is great and the building has great character. We love sitting at the bar for just drinks or even eating dinner. The staff is friendly and fun to visit with. Everything is yummy, but my favorite things on the menu are the Texas bites and the mac and cheese. My husband loves the shaved ribeye sandwich. I was seriously disappointed, first you have to pay $10 a person just to come in to eat food that is way over priced for quality I can get at Luby's. To watch the band you have to pay another $10 a person to go onto the patio. Our waitress was clearly too busy handling her "higher class" tables who were I am guessing more profitable tip wise than us, she apologized numerous times for ignoring us because she had too many other parties she was tending to. Don't get me wrong she was sweet but when paying over $50 for dinner I expect the same service as the parties that are getting all the attention. If this is 'the best place to eat in Tyler,' no one should eat out. We went on a Tuesday night, and in spite of being one out of three tables, we still had slow service. The food was overpriced for the portion and no kids menu (we had all three kids with us). My husband had the chicken fried chicken and it had waaaaaay too much thyme in it. My chicken salad sandwich was too bland with no texture while the spicy chicken soup was too spicy to eat. Since there was no kid's meal, we got my daughter a shrimp cocktail which had 3 'jumbo' shrimp for 6.95; they were regular sized shrimp, yet there were still three of them. Great atmosphere, and although there was no live music, I can see how it would be a cool place to go to. But if you're going for the food, don't bother. read more

So high and mighty. Went to sit at the bar with friends. One of the group had just renewed his license and had a temporary paper copy. It's official with a police officer but not this so-called upscale restaurant. So not only were we asked to leave the bar, we were asked to leave the bar area. And go into an empty dining room. And weren't even friendly about it. They were overpriced anyway so glad we got to leave. read more

Friendly staff (made change for the parking meter and pointed out it was free after five). Unfortunately I had to drive back to Houston the same evening, but given an overnighter, I would have chugged a few more beers even though nothing was on tap. Great food. I went on lunch earlier in the day, then went back for dinner. I like the atmosphere. It seems lunch during the week is more of the busy time. Chicken and dumplings better than Mom's! I went to a Ricks for the first time today with two clients. We had a great lunch. Two of us ordered the special which was the chicken and dumplings. We both raved about the flavor. Big chunks of chicken in a very tasty sauce with dumplings. The other client ordered the California burger which he said as excellent. Service was prompt and our ice teas glasses were never empty. All in all a good spot in out of the way Tyler. read more

For the price, I was very unimpressed. The cocktail we started out with was mostly one big ice cube, very little drink. The fried combination appetizer was mediocre and the sauces were runny. The entrees (garlic chicken and fried shrimp) were just average and there was nothing special or attractive about the presentation that you would expect from a restaurant of this price. My Friends and I happened upon this spot during our Day Trip to Tyler, and I'm so glad we did! It was a Weekday afternoon and we only had Drinks, but I can't wait to go back for Dinner! Went here for private party. The drinks and wine were good. The bread pudding ... omg ... some of the best I have EVER eaten! For our meal, we had a fajita buffet ... the meal wasn't even 2nd rate. We had Rick cater our Holiday party last week and it was AMAZING. We picked up the food at 4 and had to keep it warm until 7:30 and it tasted amazing and fresh! Our staff commented all night how great the steaks and potatoes were! I LOVED the rice and bread pudding too!!! Honestly. I never went inside the place. Ricks is the only place on the square with Valet parking. They have to hae it because their parking stalls are blocked off by their parking service. Hey' wait a minute... I pay my taxes and own a small interest in the public parking. We had one of the best lunches in my memory. I had the caramelized sea bass with grilled veggies and my friend had the beef filet. Two homeruns. The sea bass was perfect. Someone had posted earlier that they were surprised to find a place like this in Tyler which was the reason we went there. Wow! An adult restaurant in the middle of East Texas that has an extensive menu, the Ranger baseball on TV and Nancy Wilson on the sound system. We both had a salad and shrimp cocktails and drinks. The Dewars and water was well mixed but my wife's gin and tonic was all gin.I had the blue cheese wedge which was first rate but the jumbo shrimp appetizers were less than jumbo. The waiter told us that they were famous for their white chocolate bread pudding and now we know why. I was tempted to lick the bowl - it was that good. From now on when planning an overnight in Tyler, I will be at Ricks. read more

The band and atmosphere were great! We didn't eat dinner there, but came to see the live band which was Electric Circus from Austin, Texas and they were fantastic! My complaint about this place is their "pre-authorization" charges they take out of your account every time you go to the bar. Our tab ended up being $116.00, and they debited that amount, PLUS $125 in pre-auth charges that are still pending on my account, that's $241!! I lived in Austin for several years and was around the bar scene plenty, and I have NEVER seen something like this. They took my money and are holding up money that is MINE. It's been 4 days and it still hasn't been credited back to my account like the Rick's manager said it would be. I am very disappointed in this, and had I known I would have used cash only at the bar so that's my tip for anyone who has never been before, USE CASH ONLY!! read more

The luncheon prices were better than expected for a downtown restuarant. Service was good, and the restuarant seemed very well staffed. The chicken and dumplings/house salad lunch-special was excellent. However, the hamburgers were excessively salty. The side order of vegetables were inedible as they tasted like they had been sauteed in vinegar; plus, they were over cooked. Given the decor, which was nice enough, and the prices, which were fair, our expectations on the food quality were not met. read more

My wife and I ate at Rick's on the Square in Tyler today. The food and service were great, but it turns out they have a very realistic large painting of a completely nude woman in the men's room (seductively posed, leaving nothing to the imagination). The bar area is also full of almost nude pin-up model images. I spoke with the owner, Rick, and told him about the great food and dining experience I also mentioned that the painting in the men's room was objectionable to me, and that prevented me from wanting to come back, especially with regard to bringing my kids. (The food and service really are excellent!) He kept a smile on his face, but cut me off and gave me a few very snarky responses including: - "That painting has been here a long time" - "This is a bar after all" (Except that over half of it is a restaurant, and there are plenty of restaurants that have bars and don't have blatantly pornographic images in them) - "Just use the restroom before you come next time" Not that I expected him to actually take the painting down, but he clearly had no concern for my thoughts about the matter. I definitely got a "don't waste my time" vibe from him. I should add that I couldn't have been nicer to him. If he had responded with something along the lines of, "Thank you for your feedback. We hope to see you again sometime", he would have at least come across more professional. I didn't give him an ultimatum, or tell him he had to remove it. I just told him this was my only critique about the restaurant. I won't be eating there ever again. Bummer. *Edited to add that I would have given the food and service 5 stars. read more

My absolute favorite place to eat and drink in Tyler. The entire staff are always friendly. I've eaten many things on the menu (chicken fried steak, burger, roast beef sandwich, shrimp pasta, voodoo nachos, filet mignon) and they've all been incredible. My new favorite is Gigi's fried chicken which is only available at lunchtime on Mondays. Best. Chicken. Ever. Make it a priority. Great entertainment on the weekends. I went with a female co-worker and she walked in with no cover and I was stopped to pay. At the bar all the girls were getting served and the guys waited. Went there tonight for a seminar. Our meeting was upstairs & no elevator. There was 5 people that were debating whether to stay or leave. It was very dangerous for older/crippled folks. We did finally climb the stairs. Unexcusesble! The tea was so weak that the girl tried to add water to my glass. We were told that if we ordered the steak that it had to be cooked medium due to the size of the group. Never heard of such a ridiculous thing. One did come out medium rare as requested, but the other was medium to well. Could barely eat the latter. The vegetables potatoes with gravy on them & grilled squash/mushroom/onion) I looked at their prices on line. They are very OVER PRICED for what you get. The meal was good, but not out standing for sure. There was no salad & no bread. I noticed that one lady requested bread & it came about the time she finished her meal. We were not offered dessert or coffee at the end if the meal. Actually, we were never offered coffee. We have been to meetings at other, locations & salad & coffee & desert were always offered. The waiter was average, but good under the circumstances. I really can't see a reason that we would want to return unless another meeting or friends that really wanted to go there. Very disappointed! Five years ago this was a top spot in Tyler. Today not so much. Appetizer onion rings for a table of 4 and we only had 1.5 each. The price has not dropped but the he quantity is half. Take a trip to nacogdoches at clear springs and you will know what an onion ring appetizer looks like. I needed change for the meter outside that I only had 15 minutes on. I had to stop the waiter to get my order in and made it back to the meter with :30 seconds to spare. Two of us ordered grilled shrimp which states 6 pieces. Both received 5. Waiter had to get two more cooked to complete our order then brought them on one plate. The last two were cooked better as the first 5 were over cooked to the point of being tough. What once was is no more. Another item which at one time was the best I've has was the shaved rib eye sandwich is now either the worst rib eyes in the world or it is steak ez or steak-ems. These are processed. The wait staff however does not know the difference. read more

We were looking for a great casual place to sit at the bar and enjoy some high quality appetizers. Rick's was just perfect. The bartender was professional and attentive. The wine list offered several medium-high quality selections by the glass for a variety of kinds of wine. Oysters on the halfshell were perfection. We followed these with hot grilled oysters with Parmesan. Very yummy and satisfying. I then had the beef tenderloin vegetable soup. Veggies were perfectly (not over) cooked in a meaty base. The crowning moment was the bread pudding that my husband and I shared for dessert. Oh my. It was beautifully presented with chocolate swirls all around the bowl, steaming hot with a generous ladle of decadent sauce that begged to be licked from the bowl and garnished with a fresh raspberry. I would give Rick's five stars if tables offered a bit more privacy, but for casual elegance it was memorable! read more

I always get the taco salad and it is amazing! Wait staff is great. Came to see Live 80's band on a Saturday night. GREAT band!! We sat on the patio (like we always do) and we immediately turned our table perpendicular to the stage so all 4 members at our table can see the band. Another large party of 12 beside us started doing the same and the manager put it to a stop. Very upset about that! I always turn my table that way because it is a logical lay out for the patio for everyone to see the band (which we paid $10 to see). In no way did it affect the aisle (it actually made the aisle better to walk down). Manager wasn't bending and didn't have a good reason for why we couldn't. Not only was my party mad but the large party of 12 people were upset as well. I reminded him that the new place Jack Ryan's is right next door. We turned our table back to how it was and moved to another table that was perpendicular to the stage. read more
