This place is not like it used to be. I always order my Panini with grilledchicken,tomato,mozzarella, basil, and balsamic. It WAS my favorite sandwich, but the last 2 times it was not the same. They must have different cooks. The first time I thought maybe it was just an off night, but when I ordered it yesterday it was not good again. I order it to go so I don't know how bad until I get home. There was no basil both times which gives it that good flavor, and the tomato was just a tiny wet piece of skin that should have gone in the garbage. We've been coming to this restaurant for family affairs for a long time. Every time I'm back home in NJ, we stop in here for lunch. They have a huge menu and delicious deli food. (3 - 3.5 Stars) This is not the best deli in the world. Not by a long shot. That said, the nostalgia factor associated with this place is a sufficient draw for me to crave its simple old-world charm. Is it over-priced for what it is? Sure. Is it filled with elderly folks (read: our grandparents) who are either loud and obnoxious, terribly slow, or both? Absolutely. But that's just it -- you throw in a complimentary selection of pickles, coleslaw and that surprisingly "more-ish" macaroni salad and one's day is made. At least mine usually is. In my larger days, as a chubby child, my dream meal was the cheeseburger with Long Branch fries, cheese on the side, and a cream soda. The food is fine for what it is -- an attempt to duplicate the great New York City delis to which it aspires. As a New Yorker, it is certainly no 2nd Avenue Deli, Katz's or anything close, but this is New Jersey, and what can one expect (with all due respect, of course)? Though it falls short by a non-trivial margin, whenever I find myself in New Jersey (very infrequently these days), I feel compelled to stop by. There's just something about the throwback charm -- brusque service, comfort food of varying degrees of quality, and the same patrons who have been going to Richard's for donkey's years. It just feels right. Conclusion: My grandparents took me there as a child and the thought of the macaroni salad makes me want to schlepp over the river to eat said salad...I mean visit my grandparents. This food is not schlepp-worthy, it is not notable, but as a Long Branch deli, it is a neighborhood establishment that deserves respect. I look forward to stopping by soon. read more

As soon as you are seated you're served a trio of macaroni salad, pickles and Cole slaw- all delicious. I ordered a corned beef sandwich which was just ok. My mother had the chicken BLT which she said was very good. Richard's is a staple deli in Long Branch. A solid deli with good food and great servers. read more

A true deli. Consistantly warm, moist corned beef sanwhiches with just enough coleslaw on it to keep the sanwhich neat. Potato salad is good too. Hours are different depending on the day so double check. read more

While visiting my wife's family in Long Branch we decided we needed a typical Italian style deli sandwich so we took a recommendation for Richard's. I ordered a club and it was meticulously made but without any dressing on it (some Mayo was in the bag when we arrived back at the house). The lettuce and tomato were VERY fresh and delicious. The bread was tasty but the bacon was way over cooked and crumbly. Unfortunately, we all tried the house roasted turkey so we can't compare the cold cuts to other places. The turkey had very good flavor but was extremely dry. The atmosphere of the place is very nice - the staff was very courteous and the pics all over the place that do document the many years it has been in business are a great distraction when you wait for your order. They also have a very nice selection of some Italian foodstuffs. Overall, I would not hesitate recommending this place to a friend but I would caution them to avoid the Turkey. BTW, no credit cards - seems pretty standard in this area. read more

Richards is an old fashioned, New York style deli. Some of the servers are a little strange, but the sandwiches and the hot dogs are great. I came here with my girlfriend for lunch before we hit the beach. Had a diner vibe, with a lot of old people. Nonetheless the server came out with a trough of coleslaw macaroni salad and pickles. I would not recommend this place to eat. The waitress put a Corral on the table that had coleslaw macaroni salad and assorted pickles in it. Just looking at the pickles dry and shriveled. That entire Corral should have been thrown out after the last customer who ate out of it. The rye bread was mediocre and very small resulting in a small sandwich. I see a lot of positive reviews, but not my last trip there, which was the final straw of me going to Richard's deli. My wife ordered chicken matzo ball soup, matzo ball on the side, otherwise the container is all matzo ball, and very little soup. Which they did, as instructed, however, the matzo ball came in a separate PINT container along with another PINT container of the soup. So that became my quart of matzo ball soup. And to add insult to injury, there were no vegtables or parsley or dill in the soup, which are standard for Matza ball soup. The broth was very thin without much flavor, the matzo ball was undercooked. Very chinzy and haphazard. I won't even go into the turkey on rye, which was also dissapointing. read more

You can't come to Long Branch and not stop at Richards for breakfast or lunch. Everything here is the highest of quality and fairest priced. Pastrami, Corned beef and Thanksgiving sandwiches are my favorites. Nothing says thank you better than a catered lunch from Richards. Was in the area the other day and was looking forward to getting my usual corned beef sandwich. I asked if it was lean and the waitress checked. She said it was running fatty and there was a $2 up charge if you want it lean. I said ok. Never even looking at the menu my sandwich came. It is not an oversized sandwich by any means, nor never was. They serve a trio of coleslaw , macaroni salad and deli pickles. Always consistent, and alway good. There is no complaint on the taste of my sandwich but when I got the check I thought it was way too pricey for the amount of meat in the sandwich, which I estimated could not be more than a total of 4 oz. I only ate half and took the other half home. Just for the heck of it I weighed it on my accurate food scale, and yep, just as I thought the meat on the other half weighed in at 2 oz. So ok, 4 oz is the right amount we probably should be eating but what I thought was excessive was what they charged. My sandwich was $9.75 + $2.00 and with tax over $13.00. Plus tip this was a very pricey sandwich for the size of the sandwich. On another occasion I had a bowl of their matzo ball soup which was really not even good at all. Matzo balls were way too light and fluffy for my taste and had no taste. I don't think I will be returning to Richard's any time soon. Oh, and they only accept cash! Food is good but some employees are down right rude! Two of us were in on a Tuesday. Arrived around 2:30. Ordered and ONLY after we had placed our order were told they closed at 3:00. By the time we received our order, it was around 2:40 or so - that meant we had, at the most, 20 minutes to eat. The waitress came out once and asked if we needed anything. Then she came back and not-so-subtly handed us foil with which to wrap our sandwiches. When I paid the bill, I mentioned that, had the employees felt we had not enough time to eat, we should have been given that information when we arrived.
