You've just entered the western city limits of Jackson on I-40. And you might think a barbecue food truck adjacent to an interstate popular for truckers couldn't be that good. But the truck drivers know what they're doing. And so do locals and other motorists who decide that exiting I-40 for barbecue is worth it. Because it is! Exit 87 BBQ is indeed smoking legit barbecue overlooking I-40 as numerous people drive by. And they have a whole bevy of smokers to prove it. The brisket is tender and flavorful with crispy edges. The pulled pork is just as good, maybe even better. You can choose between spicy and regular barbecue sauce. And refrigerated units are filled with numerous drink options and various cheesecakes. This roadside stop really surprised me and I would definitely go again!

The barbecue nachos are flour, tortilla chips and not corn. They were over fried and the chunks of barbecue were too big to fit on the chip. This was some of the worst barbecue I've had in a long time and maybe ever. There was zero Char on the ribs. They tasted almost like they had been steamed or something. They were wet but not sauce, just with what seems like steam. The dry rub seasoning was basically just wet goo. Regardless, the fact that half of them were probably around 48° makes it impossible to enjoy them. I still don't understand how this is possible. The atmosphere is fine, though it's a tiny restaurant. The service is uneventful. There were only two tables, including ours that had customer at it. Our server was sitting in the corner with her boyfriend the whole time hanging out with him and she would just get up occasionally and check on us. She had no personality. There's a 0% chance I would ever give this restaurant another chance. Horrible. Absolutely horrible. It's completely obvious that there is zero supervision or management this restaurant.

We loved that the rib meat practically fell off the bone when picking it up. The ribs were tender and had a great flavor, not too Smokey. I ordered it without the house dry "dust" and enjoyed them with tasting all three BBQ sauces that are conveniently left on the tables. The slaw was super fresh and not overpowered by a lot of creamy sauce, just enough for flavor. The baked beans had a great bbq pork flavor and were fresh and hot. We had a great server. She put the house rib dry "dust" on the side and suggested to sprinkle it on the french fries my husband substituted for the beans; great idea!! The atmosphere has a fun nostalgia flare to the Shack style construction. We will definitely return.

Today I ordered the lunch special: pulled pork barbecue with fresh homemade coleslaw, crispy French fries, and a Dr Pepper. Everything was delicious, fresh, and exactly what I was hoping for. I had the pleasure of meeting Kenzie, who provided excellent service, and the manager, Cory, who was friendly and welcoming. I learned that Kenzie makes all of the restaurant's homemade fried pies. Cory recommended the chocolate fried pie as one of his favorites, and after trying it, I completely agree--it was absolutely outstanding and the perfect way to finish the meal. The restaurant itself is older and a bit dated, but it is clean, well-maintained, and has a warm, hometown atmosphere. During my visit, there were plenty of locals dining in, and I noticed a steady stream of customers picking up to-go orders, which says a lot about the quality of the food. I have high standards when it comes to food, customer service, and cleanliness, and I'm happy to say this restaurant met every one of them. If you're looking for authentic barbecue and friendly service, I highly recommend giving this place a try. It's definitely worth the drive. John Lobato, DIT

The sweet lady at the DT window takes one order at a time, rotates and yells it at the kitchen, takes your money, then waits until your food is ready and gives it to you. Then she waits on the next inside person inside repeating the same process. Back and forth from the counter to the DT. Pretty inefficient method that explains the long wait. There can't be much more economical than this. A half rack of ribs and two sides for $14. What the actual fuck? That is insane for March of 2024! A sandwich, side, and a drink for $7?!?!? Anyway. The bbq "meat" itself was pretty good. I had higher hopes for some good all around BBQ but the sauce just glopped it all up man. I didn't like it all and neither did the bride. Ribs were well cooked.
