Stopped in for lunch while traveling through today and was absolutely blown away. It's got that "bbq pit" feel to it which I love, like you know it's going to be good as soon as you pull into the parking lot. The staff were super friendly. I checked out this place while visiting my family. I was craving BBQ and Pappy John's hit the spot! Their portions were huge! The food was so tasty, we got some pulled pork, pork ribs, baked beans, and potato salad - everything was fantastic! We came a little close to closing, but the woman working was kind. I always get great service that's fast and friendly. The Bar B Q is always good and not dry. However I did try the rib plate the other day ight and they were very dry to me. The potato salad is always good as well as the baked beans. I'm not a huge fan in their slaw lately. I think they have changed something it use to be a lot better. Look. Not going to spend a whole lot of time here, but will say that if you're anywhere close or happen to be passing through Selmer, TN do yourself a favor and stop at Pappy John's. I've passed by it several times on my travels and am glad I made the decision to stop this time. It's good old fashioned home style BBQ. From the baked beans to the ribs it's all very tasty. Don't forget the sauce. They have a medium and hot. The medium is sweet with a small kick, while the hot is the medium sauce with more pepper. Reminds me of roadside BBQ joints common to this area since the 1950's. BBQ was excellent. Meat was chopped with a good mix of crusty outside and tender inside. Good job of removing fat. Well made sweet slaw. BBQ beans were right out of a can. Could use a little meat and seasoning. BBQ sauce was first class, sweet, very traditional Memphis style. BBQ ribs were very nicely cooked, falling off the bone. Potato salad was very good, somewhat German style with a hint of bacon flavor. A great stop for BBQ. read more

I'm positive that the workers should wash their hands upon returning to the food line after smoking by the back door. Sadly, that didn't happen. Also, aren't you supposed to be away from an entry door while you smoke? This used to be real pit BBQ, now it's just electric smoker stuff. read more

Okay guys there's BBQ and then there is barbecue! We found this place and just pulled right over. We knew nothing about it but we were definitely not disappointed! First of all there ribs! Oh my god their ribs! So Amazing! Their barbecue sauce both mild and the hot are super delicious! Their pork is delicious chicken is moist and some of the best I've ever had! I got half a rack of ribs, half of a chicken, a huge side of pork plus two sodas and it was only $13 dollars! If you ask me that's a steal! hands down one of the best barbecue places I've been to! This is my favorite barbecue place in the world. You can smell the hickory smoke a mile down the highway. The "hot" sauce can be quite hot sometimes, so keep that in mind. But it is delicious! The family pack is a great value & we used to grab them all the time on our way out to the lake. Great for on-the-go. read more

I have a weakness for BBQ. I was working in Selmer, and staying in Corinth, and driving between the two when I saw this pit BBQ just outside of Selmer, TN. Stopped in the first night and could only get a pork plate; pork, buns, and a couple of sides They were out of ribs and chicken. The pork was tasty, but didn't really have the smoked flavor I was hoping for. It's hard to make really bad pork when you cook it slow so I wasn't terribly impressed. The sauce choices are hot, and sweet. I tried the hot and it was good, but a little mild for my taste. Back the second night, after calling ahead in the morning to place my order for a rack 'o ribs. Took them back to the room and they smelled great. Ribs were tender and fall off the bone, JUST THE WAY I LIKE THEM. If you like them competition style with a little pull, these might be disappointing. The glaze provides the sweet, to the pepper on the ribs and it makes for a great taste. In fact, I liked the glaze the best. I think it's apricot, with a touch of brown sugar but it was hard to identify. Sweet and hot. Note: they didn't clean the ribs much if at all before putting them on, so the silver skin was still on which is a big minus in my book. I'll leave it to someone else to describe the decor, ambiance, whatever I missed. I only here for the BBQ. read more

It doesn't get any better than this. Quality BBQ at McDonalds prices. Not much to look at from the outside, but clean and friendly inside. I had the pulled pork. Very good with the mild sauce and generous portions. Meal with 2 sides and bottled water was 8$. If I lived in the area, I would be a regular. read more

This is one of those places that I don't even want to review because if the word gets out, people might start pouring in and I don't want to deal with a crowd in a small roadside shack with limited seating options. The place is not much to look at. It is small, cramped, outdated, with only four or five tables, but this does not bother me because MOST IMPORTANTLY it is CLEAN. The service is very friendly and the food is amazing. I ordered the rib plate and my husband ordered the half chicken. The plates were piled high with delicious bbq and the sides were really good. Stopped at Pappy John's by chance on our drive from MN to FL. Was so happy with the welcome we got, but even more happy with the fabulous bbq. Although I may never be in Selmer TN again, I would recommend Pappy's if you are anywhere near. read more
