Our group of five (three adults and two kids, ages 10 and 13) had an amazing time at Rich Oliver's Mystery School. The instructors balanced fun and safety perfectly, teaching the fundamentals and physics of riding in a way that made sense for all skill levels. By the end of the day, even our beginners were riding clutched motorcycles, banking into turns, and going over small jumps. The facility is clean and well maintained, the gear and bikes are in excellent shape, and the staff are professional, patient, and genuinely love what they do. The kids didn't want to leave. For Christmas, my son got a private lesson with Rich to learn how to ride a dirt bike. We drove from Sacramento for the experience and it was time well spent. Worth every penny. Rich went over the mechanics of the bike, started my son slow (who had never ridden a motorcycle) and progressed him quickly based on his ability. By the end of the day my son was even taking some jumps. I really admire the teaching style of Rich and am grateful that he gave my son a good foundation in riding. Rich Oliver's Mystery School is something that benefits all types of motorcycle riding, whether it be dirt or road, track or street; the "mystery" is the skill set you will learn that you never thought you had. Due to rain, the two-day Fun Camp was cut short to one day. I was bummed because the second day was supposed to be when the real fun was to start. But, we're currently scheduling a make-up weekend. I still feel compelled to write about the experience because it was just so much fun! In fact, I might say it was the most fun I've had on a motorcycle, ever. What is it? It's basically a flat tracking school, but not specifically a flat tracking school. The venue is set at Rich Oliver's residence in Auberry, CA, which is roughly 30 miles East of Fresno, just at the foot of the Sierras. His property is impressive and a motorcyclist's dream as it is literally surrounded by various mini tracks used for all the different drills and races. The equipment is provided: a Yamaha TT-R125 outfitted with Lindemann Engineering suspension, a dual-purpose rear tire made for easy and predictable sliding, and a few other factory options making it an ideal dirt tracking companion. Rich instructs the group (max. group size is 8 at any given school) starting out with the basics: how to operate the motorcycle, which is made to accustom each rider to its assigned machine for the weekend. He then goes over proper riding technique. While many may think that dirt riding might be contradictory to the way you have been riding your street bike, it really isn't. So, here's the deal and why this school will benefit anyone who rides a motorcycle. The drills Rich put you through allow one to understand how a motorcycle works under extreme circumstances. You learn how a bike reacts when the rear starts to slide and do unpredictable things like falling; in turn, you learn how to make an unpredictable situation predictable, while having the most fun you will ever have. It's really quite a rhythmic experience as you begin to put all the fundamentals you learn the first half of the day together. The day moves very quickly and it should be noted that his school isn't for everybody. It helps to go with a group that is equally skilled. Our group had four that have attended before (including Rich Oliver's Pro School, which is a four-day camp that puts very experienced riders, usually racers, through rigorous and physically demanding drills), me, and two that had very little dirt experience. The two with no dirt experience struggled a bit but did their best and improvement was noted and would have been exponential the second day, according to Rich. For whatever reason, I was able to pick it up pretty quickly, perhaps because of my limited dirt experience when I was a kid. At one point, I posted the best time for the Big Oval Time Trial at the end of the first day. There's no feeling like going WOT deep into a dirt, lean the bike, dump down a gear, and feel the bike go into a controlled slide. Then, you go WOT again and power slide out of the turn and prepare for the next. Yes, there is a lot of crashing involved and in fact, I won the award for the nastiest crash of the day, a high-side that pitched me into the air not high enough to throw me over the bars, but onto the bars...about 1 cm away from the family jewels...weee! I have to keep this short and sweet because we weren't able to do the second day, which was supposed to be twice as hard and twice as fun. I was really looking forward to the 25 lap race at the end! Oh well, until next time. For now, I leave you with this bitter-sweet taste of quite possibly the best thing you could do for your riding. No, I don't expect to start backing in the 125 at the track, but I think this will help my overall riding. Okay, time to go buy a dirt bike now! UPDATE: I wrote this review in Feb. Since then, I've gone to the Fun Camp two more times (and bought a dirt bike). The second day is so much more intense and way more fun! The first half is spent doing drills and a few lectures on health & nutrition & race preperation (i.e. focus) gained from Rich's race experience -- very cool stuff! The second half is spent racing! While it's nothing like road racing where you get chills before the race starts, the competition is equal. Shoving an elbow into your buddy while sliding around his or her outside is good for a few chuckles (and bruises). Winning the 25-lap main is pretty rewarding too because you need to stay consistent yet aggressive...and yes, I did win :) read more

I'm a relatively new rider (1.5 years, 30k, scrambler). Before ROMS, my experience on dirt was limited to weekend camping excursions. I completed the off-road challenge. The course included all conveniences (gear, bike, food), which enabled me to focus on the fundamentals - by observation first, then heaps of practice. Track conditions were well maintained and provided a variety of turns and technical features. Some friends and I did the Fun Camp this weekend. This is the 2-day camp for those who already know how to ride a motorcycle, but not a dirt bike. All four of us absolutely LOVED it! This school is run by Rich Oliver and his family. They take you into their home and under their wing as though you are already friends. They are absolutely amazing. They have thought of everything and their hospitality is beyond measure. I was blown away by how genuinely kind and wonderful they all are. Rich Oliver's provided the Yamaha bikes and the gear (for rent). I am petite and so am particularly difficult to fit and another member of our group is taller than most, so we brought our own street gear, just in case. But, we were both fitted effortlessly, head to toe, including the Shoei helmets! Lunch was provided in the house and fruit, snacks, and water were always available in the shaded resting area. Rich Oliver himself is humble and incredibly fun. He clearly loves what he does and has a great time out there with you. His joy is infectious. His helpers (family and neighbors) were patient, experienced, and encouraging. They definitely run you through the drills and practices that you will need to know how to ride dirt bikes. There are no hard sells here at all either, just FUN! I will definitely be going back for more lessons and feel truly honored to have been able to learn from them; in their home. My gf and I attended the one day learn to ride course, and it was one of the funnest things we have ever done. Rich and Karin are extremely kind and welcoming. The group of students spans all age ranges from kids with their parents, young adults, to older folks. It doesn't really matter because everyone is there to have fun and learn how to ride in the dirt. You don't need a license to attend and it was so gratifying for me to see my gf, who has never been on a bike, power sliding through the dirt by the end of the day. The Yamaha motorcycles and riding gear are all top notch and in excellent condition. Facilities are super clean. We had tacos for lunch that were delicious. I attended two of Rich's classes with my brother in law and two nephews. This is well run machine. In our group the ages were 7 to 70. Rich and his crew did an amazing job of teaching all age levels. His facility is well maintained. He has several different tracks set up to teach different riding skills. Both the gear he rents and the motorcycles are well maintained and in excellent condition. They clean up all the gear and motorcycles every night. His wife Karin prepares the lunch and helps keep things running smoothly. This is truly a family business. Great teaching style and progression of skills. Knew exactly how to pace the class so we didn't get too overwhelmed yet felt challenged. The amount of knowledge gained in the one day class was far beyond what I had hoped for or believed could be taught in such a short time. At the beginning of the day, I wouldn't have believed I and my friends would be sliding our bikes through turns with confidence (at least most of the time... ), or taking fast turns through a foot of mud and water. Rich and his family were also great hosts. Lunch was healthy and plentiful, and served out of their lovely kitchen on their outdoor porch. 1 year ago I attended my first "FUN CAMP" at the Rich Oliver Mystery School. I went into that weekend as a racer with quite a bit of motocross, road racing, and supermoto experience and honestly was not sure what I would learn or not learn during the weekend... I left the camp on sunday afternoon with a great big smile plastered on my face and couldn't wait to open up my checkbook and sign up immediately for another "Fun Camp". The weekend was spent rippin around the many beautifully groomed tracks at Rich's ranch while doing drills, races, and learning from the former AMA roadrace champ himself. Rich and his staff are very experienced, professional, and down to earth. The lessons that I took away have been useful in every race and most riding experiences that i have had since that first weekend. I had so much fun that weekend that I decided to put together a group of my close moto buddies for another weekend at the Mystery SChool.... well, I have been back to the "Fun Camp" 7 times now and have helped 70 other very pleased motorcyclists be a part of this action. I took the POST motorcycle update course this week. Rich and Karin were amazing hosts and both were a wealth of knowledge! I have ridden dirt bikes my whole life and thought I was a decent rider. Two days of instruction with Rich improved my riding skill tremendously! Karin made lunch for us both days and the food was amazing! A professional well organized team The Mystery School campus is an organized and safe environment for dirt track/fun school. Eight bikes awaited our group: clean, well-maintained, and ready to ride/train/race. The bikes are fresh and kept in full working order. Adjustments are quickly made to accommodate all sizes. The "bike barn" is neat/organized, clean, and is a comfortable place to get geared up. Mystery School rental gear(gloves, pants, helmets, etc) is great quality kit that is clean and fresh. Goggle wipes and micro fiber cloth were kept handy to keep the goggle lens clean. The tented pit area is used for breaks between drill/track training/race sessions. Water, cytomax, assortment of energy bars, fresh wide variety of tasty fruit(the peaches were awesome), comfortable chairs, etc to keep the students hydrated and fueled in comfort. Safety: The Mystery School campus is a very safe environment to practice drills, train and race. Plenty of hay bales positioned in appropriate places around the tracks. Rich ensures that everyone of his students is very aware of their surroundings. Students are not allowed to wander. Drills are focussed and conducted for maximum learning with maximum safety protocol. Students, from experienced racers to first time riders, are able to focus/train/work hard 110% with no distractions. Ariel was on her third day of riding/training with Rich. She had a blast and learned a lot right along side her Dad(an experienced road racer, cars and bikes). Their are plenty of breaks to ensure students remain hydrated and are not over-worked. Perfect mix of intensity training and rest. Rich Oliver: Articulate and great communicator, talented, super positive, coach. Rich was always "present" and kept our group training hard and smart. Immediately learned our names(yes, a small thing, and, very important). Always a smile. And he got the whole group to progress at our different skill levels, learn, and have a ton of fun. The fun aspect infused the whole weekend. Rich can ride fast and in complete control, with great style and technique. When he demos a skill/drill he starts out in a slow easy mode then finishes the demo with full intensity/awesome skilled racer mode. Students are given the entry level version and are then given the master of the universe version. Effective way to give all skill levels a model to work with. When on the track with a novice group Rich rides just a bit above the average skill/speed so students can have a chance to follow and learn by emulating. When the skill level goes up so does Rich's pace. And occasionally he lets it all hang out, full tilt to give us all a show!! I could go on and on, but really, the man has got the whole lets learn/train/race and have lots of fun package down! This was about as much fun as its possible to have in a weekend. I went with a group of experienced riders, I am a very new rider, and we all learned a great deal in his step by step process. You do drills and skills and eventually build up to the point that you do a bunch of actuall races! Rich is an amazing teacher, and he and his wife Karin welcome you (lunch, breakfast and dinner were included), feed you, and help you relax and have a great time. I recommend this highly. read more

I attended a 2 day Police Officer course and was amazed how much I learned. Never have truly ridden off road bikes before, this concept was very new to me. As a street rider, your skill set is different than a motocross rider. Rich knows this because he was a multiple AMA champion. He understands every aspect of ridding a motorcycle on street or dirt and transfers that knowledge onto the students like me. Riding an off road motorcycle is fun but not the reason I would give him more stars if I could. The reason for such high ratings is pretty simple. He takes you from a brand new dirt rider to one that can take a dirt bike and slide around a corner and feel in control. Might not sound super impressive except when you consider he did this for me in just 2 days! I had my doubts and my confidence was not very high. Rich encourages you to push yourself and trust that even if you fall, you will learn. His course is fantastic and in such a nice setting. There are no distractions and he is very organized. If he tells you that you will be doing certain things throughout the day, you will do them. This is not a "look how well Rich can ride" type school. This is all about the students and watching them progress and start to apply all the things they learned. This is what sets this course apart from others. Rich truly wants you to learn and see exactly what you can accomplish. I will go back to his course as often as I can because I can only get better with his coaching.
