We come to this area regularly to visit our retired Priest, so each time I like to find a new place to take him. I was looking for a quick place for a light meal, since we had eaten throughout the day at a festival. The outside looks divey, but the inside is clean and comfortable. The food, unfortunately was disappointing. I was hoping to find an authentic Chinese style rice plate restaurant. It is actually a typical fast food style Chinese restaurant. We ordered the cantonese style fried noodles with beef. The dish was too salty, and the meat was a cheaper cut that was tenderized. We also ordered the Precious 8 Tofu. It was billed as braised tofu, but in fact it was just plain soft tofu. Again the meat was over-tenderized... a sign of using cheaper cuts of meat. read more

Sigh...we loved this place for a while. Food was excellent. Over time, it went downhill. It was no longer stellar. Cuts of meat seemed cheap, food was overly salty, and things were forgotten from orders. These negatives became the new norm, which was a shame, as we ate from here ALL the time. We took a break after being disappointed one too many times. After about a year off, we ordered again, hoping they got their act together. I had the Triple Crown with the various meats and seafood. The decor is cute and would be comfortable if the horrible manager wasn't yelling at her workers and the poor teenager that looked like he was trying to do his homework near the front of the restaurant . A cute neighborhood place in need of a new air conditioner! Very warm on the summery evening we hit here. We tried the Szechuan spicy wontons first. Meat filled doughy goodness drowned in a thin, spicy soy based sauce. They didn't need that much liquid...but still, they tasted good. Then, onto the: Scallion pancake. Crispy, too much so due to deep frying and a bit on the salty side of town. Steer clear of that one. Chicken and black bean casserole served in a ceramic pot was up next. Juicy chunks of chicken breast, canned straw mushrooms, and a smattering of mixed vegetables in a slightly thickened sauce laced with fermented black beans. Very flavorful, but borderline overwhelming because of the starch-thickened sauce. Advice: a light broth would have made a better difference. Now, onto the Peking style shrimp. Nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked, but served atop overcooked and starchy chow fun noodles. Good shrimp, lazily executed noodles. Not a strike out, but there's better to choose from in the area. Their lunch size portions are pretty small but the quality is pretty good. We always order ahead of time and they always have it ready for us. Today for instance: I called the place to let them know that I only had $100 bill and to send the delivery guy with change ($45 bill) I handed the guy $102 and asked for $50 and he tried to hand me $15 and ran out the door. Lunch specials come with choice of rice and soup. Ordered the sesame chicken, white rice and wonton soup. All were solid, but nothing blew me away. Rice Shop has a very original menu, with traditional Chinese takeout dishes and some new ones. This place does a huge take out business. If you are looking for fancy or fusion food, this isn't the place for you. This is a very small restaurant that serves classic old time chinese food. Spare ribs are very good and meaty. The pork fried rice is the way it is supposed to be, brown, not that bright yellow color that you find at a lot of places. We live in Rutherford and wanted to try a different Chinese place. I suggested The Rice Shop to my husband. I used to work in East Rutherford and don't remember any bad experiences when I ordered from there. So we ordered for a delivery. An hour later I called just to check on them. They told me they'd be here in a few minutes. Twenty minutes later I called them again. They gave my order to someone else and couldn't find where they wrote down my order AND lost my phone number. So even though I called twenty minutes earlier they just realized they didn't have their stuff together. I am now waiting for them to bring us our dinner 2 hours after I first called. We order delivery frequently from Rice Shop. Their dumplings are really good, especially the wontons in brown sauce. I feel like their menu has the standard North Jersey Chinese fare, along with some different and interesting offerings. We really like the Crispy Chicken Seven Flavor, a spicy and garlic-y take on those standard deep fried chicken chunks. We usually order the basics - dumplings, beef or chicken w/broccoli, Gen Tso's chicken, etc... Nothing to write home about but it is good reliable food at a great price - Lunch specials start at just over $5 and include a choice of rice (white, brown, veg. fried) and also a choice of sides (soup, egg roll, or soda). This is my first time checking out this Chinese place. I'm not really a big fan of Chinese food, mainly because it's like injecting lard directly into your aoritc valve, so I tend to stay away from it unless I need some food quick. Last night I was just lazy and didn't feel like cooking, and the rice-papery menu they left in the lobby of my building was whispering to me to try them. Checked yelp and it got mixed reviews. Had to test for myself. This was an order for delivery so I can't speak on the brick and mortar. **Menu: Pretty standard fare for a Chinese place. Delivery stated min of $10 and said it was fast. Prices are slightly higher than average, but not too bad. Their website is listed incorrectly on one part, and correctly on another, so I didn't get to see the online coupons they were advertising since I didn't notice the correct listing till just now actually. **Call: The girl I spoke to was easy to understand, unlike many Chinese restaurants. She didn't rush me off the phone and butcher my order or offer a bunch of options which I can't understand. She even patiently described the hunan sauce at my request, and listed a bunch of beverages. Paid by credit card over the phone. Flawless. **Delivery: It came fast, within 20 minutes. I would say 18 minutes. Then again, I'm only one town over. Delivery guy was nice but soulless. Food was very hot. **Food: As I mentioned above, I usually stick to very basic things since bad calories can add up quickly with this Chinese crap, and I try to eat as healthy as possible. They had a "Special Health and Diet Menu" section on their menu, so I got the "Gourmet Garden" for $11.95, which had a mix of vegetables and shrimp, chicken, and beef. I had a choice of four sauces, and went for Hunan. The food is all steamed and the sauce came on the side so I can apply it at my own discretion (this is a win) and I was able to easily substitute the white for brown rice (which I don't think they charged me for unless my water was free). It had a lot of flavor. It wasn't bland or greasy or anything gross. Vegetables were all fresh tasting, and the meats had none of that veiny fatty stuff which you chew for 20 minutes before just spitting it out. I was hesitant about the shrimp because another reviewer mentioned food poisoning, but mine had excellent taste and ate it last night with no consequence. The sauce was perfectly spicy (but I could always go for more spice). Taste wasn't mind-blowing, but it stands in one of the higher echelons of quick Chinese fast food. Leftovers were great! (but then again doesn't all Chinese food? Or most food for that matter...) My chief complaint is that they totally skimped out on the meat. There were maybe 4 pieces of shrimp and not too much of the chicken and beef (I'd be lying if I said I counted it). For 12 bucks I'd expect a *little* bit more meat shoved in there. However, it's not a deal breaker, but usually these places tend to stuff the plastic containers to the brim. I would order from here again, and in time I will determine whether or not they are worthy of displacing my current go-to Chinese joint. I've been patronizing the Rice Shop since it first opened and it quickly became my favorite local Chinese. The food has always been extremely good so far. The prices are very reasonable, especially for someone who does not do takeout very often. What impressed me the most was the excellent preparation: a light hand with the sauces, flavorful stocks, fresh clean tastes with everything cooked to the appropriate tenderness. Every veggie dish I've ordered has been exactly as described: no cheap ingredient additions to stretch the dish. Favorite dishes include the Szechuan Spicy Hot Wontons, Four Precious Jewels (a nice light option with tasty proteins and plenty of veggies), Sauteed Bok Choi w. Black Mushrooms, and the XO Special. Don't order the mini spring rolls, not worth the money, seems like packaged freezer stuff from BJ's. Dumplings were not made fresh and made with a pirogi press... not really Chinese...except the dumpling sauce. This place is a takeout restaurant with chairs ....nothing more!!! Expect terrible service . the owners kids dressed in gap denim and tshirts will only visit your table to take order and to drop off food..... don't expect any more than that. I am a regular when it comes to take outs and fast food, not really a thing to boast but its true. So, a day came as they often do when I felt that hmm, today feels like a take out day. Of course, after shuffling through my pile of take out menus, I settled on Rice Shop located conveniently near by. I ordered some stuff and in the weary summer day, opted for their delivery service. Since it was only four blocks away, (I KNOW, I am too LAZY), I thought no extravagant tip was needed, but wow, did the delivery guy have an attitude. He seemed rude and even whined claiming "that's it?" and then settling to tell me that "next time, come pick it up yourself." Now, I have also worked in restaurants and if its one thing ever server knows, its to be polite to all customers, right? After receiving my first blow from the Rice Shop, I was in it for another when I opened the bag and found that there was my Soda and Rice order completely missing. Suffice it to say, when I called back on the discovery, the lady claims, "well, he's not coming back." Of course, I am quite patient and this is not the first time they have been this way, last time they came a whopping two hours later and the time before, there was no fried rice, despite charging for it.
