Walked down there today to get some curry chicken, and it's very flavorful as to be expected - and I love that they add snap peas and water chestnuts to their curry! Believe or not, there are "levels" to Chinese fast food (aka bootleg Chinese food). And Lodi Chinatown Gourmet Kitchen is, in my humble opinion, on the lower end. We decided to go out of our way and give them a try, based on some old Yelp photos of their pan fried dumplings and how good it looked in the photos. I constantly subject myself to new, lower-end establishments in hopes of finding gems here and there, but I should have known better with this one. This restaurant is very typical of any Chinese fast food restaurant and they serve most of the usuals here - I'm hoping the "usuals" of Chinese fast food need no introduction what so ever. In addition, there are your lunch specials as well, which are served daily from 11AM - 3PM. We ended up ordering the Pan Fried Pork Dumplings and a Chicken with Garlic Sauce Lunch Special with Pork Fried Rice and Wonton Soup for takeout. First, before I dive into the flavors, it was very disappointing to find out that the Pan Fried Pork Dumplings only came with 6 pieces. 6 pieces for $8!?!? What has this world come to that a bootleg pan fried pork dumpling is $1.33 each!?!? As for the food, meh. The pork dumplings were rather very average. It wasn't great, but it wasn't the worst pork dumpling I've ever had. As for the Chicken with Garlic Sauce - another meh. I've definitely had better when it comes to this type of a lunch special. The taste of it all was just a bit off and not as good as other Americanized Chinese fast food we've had at other places. It was worth a try to see if they served better pan fried dumplings than our favorite Chinese fast food restaurant, but the answer was a clear NO. Disappointed. Today we tried 2 of their combo's & some steamed dumplings. Called in a pick up order. The food was hot & ready for a quick grab & go. The steamed pork dumplings were ok. The BBQ boneless pork was just ok & egg rolls tasted old and weren't crispy. The General Taos Chicken was oily, heavily breaded overly sweet stringy barely there chicken, got tossed out. So my son basically ordered the just okay items and he'd give them 3 stars. Average American Chinese food. General tsos was crunchy and flavorful but seemed like more breading than chicken. The sauce is sweeter than most. Shrimp in garlic sauce was a little bland for me and mostly vegetables, shrimp were pretty small. Pork fried rice was not seasoned/fried enough but had big chunks of pork. Fried dumplings, egg rolls and hot and sour soup were pretty standard. Dumplings were soft instead of crisp, should poke a hole in the container to avoid steaming. Egg rolls were pretty good and crispy. Hot and sour was hearty and loaded with ingredients. Cash or credit, was ready in 15 minutes for pickup. Would give other menu items a shot, but it's not as good as my old Chinese takeout spot (Sunny Wok). read more

Very mediocre americanized chinese food. While the pick up process is simple and the food is okay -- it doesn't quite hit the spot when you are looking to indulge in a few of your favorite classics. Order beef with garlic sauce, sesame chicken, and spare ribs and everything almost tasted like a healthier version of the classics. If you are looking for a non-greasy fix of fast food chinese, this may be your jam -- for me, I'll stick to some more flavorful, satisfying dishes. read more

After more frequent visits to Chinatown Gourmet I think this is one of the better Americanized Chinese restaurants I've been too. Young Chow fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, chili grilled shrimp; these are items I routinely order. They do dumplings well; not much different than what you normally see but sauced a little differently adding extra flavor. Not particular sure why chow mein is chicken onions and peppers over rice when it should be stir fried noodles, but every place is like that. I must agree with the other yelper reviews about the General Tso and sesame chicken. Both definitely have a crispiness and crunchiness to it, that separates it from most other Chinese food takeout places. I've ordered four different dishes here as lunch specials and all four have been good. I've tried the General Tso chicken, sesame chicken, chicken with garlic sauce, and the hot and spicy chicken. All lunch specials come with your choice of white or fried rice and a wonton soup, or egg drop soup, or a soda. The price of the lunch special is $6. Out of all four, the General Tso and sesame chicken have been my favorite. As stated above, the crispiness of the chicken stands out. The sauce is similar to other Chinese takeouts, but I like the fact that every bite is crunchy and not soggy. I haven't tried the kung pao yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Easily the best Chinese restaurant in Lodi. Maybe the whole area too. The lady who works the front desk sounds mean but she's helpful and remembers your orders. The guy who works the desk is pretty hilarious. All the workers seem great. The food is amazing, like I said easily the best Chinese place in town. Their food isn't super sweet like the other places. It's also really really crunchy compared to to other places. The general tso is my standard dish to judge every place and this one is perfect. The chicken is crunchy and juicy.
