I keep being drawn back to Meuwly's, though I no longer live in the area nor purchase many pork-based deli meats. Meuwly's offers much more, and attending one of their events served as a reminder of the breadth of their food expertise and local knowledge. Each Easter, our family ham comes from Meuwly's. In late March, my partner and I attended the "Easter with Meuwly's" event, hosted by Myles Fedun, Chef de Cuisine, who is a Canadian with maternal and paternal Ukrainian heritage. This event celebrated Myles's Ukrainian roots, and he highlighted some of the regional differences in the same traditional dishes within his own family. The experience was amazing, awesome... whatever your vernacular, we had a helluva great time. There was of course so, SO much food, which was paired expertly with wines and refreshing cocktails made from in-house mixers and cordials. The charcuterie was beautifully presented, prepared by a young woman whose name I missed. A fellow named Tyler assisted Chef Myles and introduced some greens to the carb-fat-meat-dairy fest, albeit with plenty of lardons and butter. One of the owners, Pete, welcomed us on arrival, and then continued with preparing their delicious Easter hams. Meuwly's is an incredible Edmonton business which I cannot recommend enough. They are doing great things here, and showcasing many wonderful in-house, local, provincial and Canadian-made epicurean products. You can even stop in for lunch. For me and my family it's a new tradition, it's supporting local, and wow it's just darn good. Edmonton proud!

I had had a rather unpleasant experience at the last place we took a deer, so I was weary to go back there and to try a new place. But from the moment we walked in to Victoria Fancy Sausage I felt at home. As you walk in you are bombarded with the most amazing smells! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Which was night and day from the last place. They let us taste examples of what we were ordering so we would know what to expect. Which was wonderful and everything was delicious. It only took about a week for them to process our deer and smoke all the meat. Everything was neatly packaged in numbers I had asked for. Some in vacu-sealed packs and others wrapped in butchers paper. Everything has tasted amazing and the customer service is top notch. We will be coming here for years to come!

In a word: underwhelming…read more When I first saw this place, the Ukrainian, perogy loving side of me got very excited. I finally tried it today with two friends and we were all unimpressed. The price point surprised me - $8 for 6 perogies and $11 (!) for 9. There are four options, all of the cheddar cheese filled, with different choices of toppings. For a place that claims to be "gourmet", I expected some more wild combos or at least some different options for fillings. I went with the classic Kool Kiev, topped with sauteed cabbage, garlic sausage and scallions. The cabbage was plentiful, but I didn't even see the sausage in the container until I'd already eaten a couple of perogies. And it wasn't genuine Ukrainian kubie. Just two and a half sad slices of sad sausage. What really disappointed me was that I saw the perogies being ladled out of the pot of water and into my container, which made them on their own quite bland. They were good quality, but tasted boiled and that's it. For me it's a MUST that they are cooked and sauteed or fried with the onions and meat to make everything extra tasty. I think what made this a two-star experience was the price. I can go to the Ukrainian market and buy two dozen perogies for $8 and do as good of a job cooking them up as they do at Baba Fink's, if not better. The toppings were not high quality and there were bags from Lucky 97 hanging everywhere behind the counter. The food was not bad, don't get me wrong, but I should have paid $7 for what I had, not 9. Disappointed.

Amazing prices on steaks and roasts. You can also get pre made beef meat balls, chicken breast, season chicken wings, pork tenderloin and fresh fish too. They have a freezer that also has frozen meats and packages of chopped up bacon bits for under $2!!!! I often get there jerky... again you cannot beat the price for the quality. The only down fall is they are not open during the summer so check there website to know when the start of the semester is!

(The only drawback is that they are only open while school is in session from mid-Sept to mid-April; usually, if you look them NaitCulinary on twitter, they're pretty good about keeping everyone posted about the hours!) They have a great selection of fresh meat, occasionally, fish, some sausages, some pre-seasoned options, and as well, in the past year, they've also had a variety of cheese. I love stopping in here because the meat is always fresh and prepared that week by the students in the retail meat program. And if you ever have any questions, the students and instructors that work in the shop are very knowledgeable and helpful! This is a great place to go if you live alone or just don't need a large portion of meat at any given time, as they do carry smaller portions of steak, ground beef, etc. I really enjoy their bacon, as it tends to be sliced a bit thicker than the ones you would typically find at the supermarket.

Bought two bags of cabbage rolls for New Year's Eve. The woman said they carry Gluten free perogies but were also sold out. She seemed also a bit annoyed with me scrutinizing ingredients, I tried explaining as a Celiac it is IMPERATIVE that I scrutinize every ingredient to ensure it is safe. My husband also called about 20 minutes upon our arrival to check their hours and double checked their sausage was Gluten free he mentioned she sounded mad at his question.
