Wow! I just found one of my most favourite places in Edmonton. As soon as I walked in, I felt I was in Amsterdam! It brought back all the good memories. I checked the aisles and there were so many awesome products that you can't find in a normal grocery store and they are popular in Europe! Dangerously delicious and perhaps poisonous for calorie counters! But here I am, back with a bunch of those things, enjoying every bite and say f@&$ the diet!!! Lol The best butcher in the city that I know and they are very kind and helpful. The guy who was helping us took his time to explain some stuff and did a bunch of extra things to make our experience amazing. You feel the warmth of a family and home which you can hardly find these days! I will definitely go back there and I love this place!

Small stores, lovingly run to share a particular culinary point of view, are my way to happiness. I collect them, like trading cards, often filling in my gap time with visits in order to get inspiration for my next cookery. Ben's had me from the Stroopwafels, which I loved fresh in Amsterdam, and kept me with all the Dutch items, including more foodstuffs and even fan team scarves and shirts. (I grew up in Soestdijk and Ben's brings back memories of both the foods and the way of shopping that's so different than the once-weekly big box shopping that's typical today.) The deli counter is a big win, from traditional Italian salumi to smoked horse (tasty, salty!) to gouda to sub sandwiches (which, yes, at one time I called "grinders" and "hoagies"). Ben's: go there, enjoy the foodie love, take home some of the joy.

    Wooden shoes anyone?

Popped into Ben's the other day to kill some time while we were getting a Thule Roof cargo carrier installed just down the block at Racks For Cars. First of all, why on earth did I not visit here before?!? I used to work just down the block from here 1 day a week. Even back then, office peeps would frequently go to Ben's for a quick sandwich to-go! The small store is filled with all kinds of Dutch goodies and treats ranging from wooden shoes to the largest bulk display of black licorice I've ever seen (try salty)! Even check out their website to get the run down on the treats! http://www.bensmeats.com/dutch-candy-shop/ The butcher shop is awesome and you can even watch them do their magic while you are in shop! They offer all kinds of deals/options for freezer packs of meat! Special Orders? You bet, Ben's Meat has you covered here, too! They offer hot items made to order such as Croquettes (GO TRY ONE NOW), gluten free chicken & fries, and various sandwiches/subs! Don't forget custom orders for holidays such as their Gluten Free Pumpkin Pies! Be sure to take a jaunt around the whole store to get a feel for what they offer as well as taking in their generational picture wall back by the coffee and bistro table section (you might even find a shot of Dave with Gordon Ramsey). Owened and operated by the same family in Edmonton, since 1953 - not something you find everyday! And above all, remember they are closed on Sundays so you best be getting there no later than Saturday for your Sunday BBQ needs!

.Lovely little shop where you can get all sorts of European treats, meats and sausage! They recently celebrated their 65th anniversary and it's no surprise they have so much staying power. We asked how the various gingerbread products compared and we were treated to samples of practically all their stock (and bought a whole bunch home lol). Imported items include various types of gouda, sauces and several aisles devoted to gluten free products. They make and smoke some of their sausages and the rest is locally made. They even have little packages of herring (same ones you can get at heritage days served with raw onion!). Knowledgeable and friendly, we left with a bunch of sausages, frozen krokets, some meat pastries, lots of gingerbread and smiles on our faces. I need to clean out my deep freeze before I head back to stock up on their yummy looking steaks!

Don't eat Donair and poutine. It's the worst I ever had. I still have tummy pain. It's just soggy and the meat is some old sausage.

I had had a rather unpleasant experience at the last place we took a deer, so I was weary to go back there and to try a new place. But from the moment we walked in to Victoria Fancy Sausage I felt at home. As you walk in you are bombarded with the most amazing smells! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Which was night and day from the last place. They let us taste examples of what we were ordering so we would know what to expect. Which was wonderful and everything was delicious. It only took about a week for them to process our deer and smoke all the meat. Everything was neatly packaged in numbers I had asked for. Some in vacu-sealed packs and others wrapped in butchers paper. Everything has tasted amazing and the customer service is top notch. We will be coming here for years to come!

We have several other hidden gem favourites along 118th Avenue, but Victoria is our anchor that we never miss. Their selection and quality and pricing is unmatched. I wish I could even start to figure my favourite item from here but it's hard... bratwurst? Scotch eggs? Spicy Hungarian sausage? Paprika rubbed back bacon? Chocolate breakfast sausages? Brisket filled, bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers? Be sure to come with an appetite... the hot lunch counter is . Saturdays they do Fleischkäse and it's ridiculously good. The chicken thighs, sandwiches, brisket, chicken cordon blue... again I could go on. If you have never been here before you are doing yourself a disservice. This might be my favourite place in Edmonton, and that's saying a lot. Great people working here to boot. Get on it!
