I keep being drawn back to Meuwly's, though I no longer live in the area nor purchase many pork-based deli meats. Meuwly's offers much more, and attending one of their events served as a reminder of the breadth of their food expertise and local knowledge. Each Easter, our family ham comes from Meuwly's. In late March, my partner and I attended the "Easter with Meuwly's" event, hosted by Myles Fedun, Chef de Cuisine, who is a Canadian with maternal and paternal Ukrainian heritage. This event celebrated Myles's Ukrainian roots, and he highlighted some of the regional differences in the same traditional dishes within his own family. The experience was amazing, awesome... whatever your vernacular, we had a helluva great time. There was of course so, SO much food, which was paired expertly with wines and refreshing cocktails made from in-house mixers and cordials. The charcuterie was beautifully presented, prepared by a young woman whose name I missed. A fellow named Tyler assisted Chef Myles and introduced some greens to the carb-fat-meat-dairy fest, albeit with plenty of lardons and butter. One of the owners, Pete, welcomed us on arrival, and then continued with preparing their delicious Easter hams. Meuwly's is an incredible Edmonton business which I cannot recommend enough. They are doing great things here, and showcasing many wonderful in-house, local, provincial and Canadian-made epicurean products. You can even stop in for lunch. For me and my family it's a new tradition, it's supporting local, and wow it's just darn good. Edmonton proud!

For $24 we got 2 slabs of ribs, hot potatoe salad loaded with bacon and a gigantic portion of coleslaw. At any restaurant it easily would of cost $60 plus dollars. On weekends they smoke some brisket or Montreal smoked meats and I definetly want to try them. But from the moment we walked in to Victoria Fancy Sausage I felt at home. As you walk in you are bombarded with the most amazing smells! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Which was night and day from the last place. They let us taste examples of what we were ordering so we would know what to expect. Which was wonderful and everything was delicious. Amazing prices on steaks and roasts. You can also get pre made beef meat balls, chicken breast, season chicken wings, pork tenderloin and fresh fish too. They have a freezer that also has frozen meats and packages of chopped up bacon bits for under $2!!!! I often get there jerky... again you cannot beat the price for the quality. (The only drawback is that they are only open while school is in session from mid-Sept to mid-April; usually, if you look them NaitCulinary on twitter, they're pretty good about keeping everyone posted about the hours!) They have a great selection of fresh meat, occasionally, fish, some sausages, some pre-seasoned options, and as well, in the past year, they've also had a variety of cheese. I love stopping in here because the meat is always fresh and prepared that week by the students in the retail meat program. And if you ever have any questions, the students and instructors that work in the shop are very knowledgeable and helpful! This is a great place to go if you live alone or just don't need a large portion of meat at any given time, as they do carry smaller portions of steak, ground beef, etc. I really enjoy their bacon, as it tends to be sliced a bit thicker than the ones you would typically find at the supermarket.
