My partner in crime waited in line and came back raving, not just about the tamales, but about how friendly and upbeat the staff was while keeping things moving and answering questions. You could feel the good energy even during the holiday rush. That year we ordered the beef, chicken, and the Kadillak Lite (pork, cream cheese, spinach - sans serrano peppers), and every single one was memorable: rich, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Fast forward to Christmas 2025, and we were back. This time, we showed up about two hours before their scheduled opening and were offered frozen tamales since the hot, fresh ones would be sold at opening time. The staff explained everything clearly and kindly, and that option worked out perfectly for us. Our family gathering wasn't for several hours, so we had plenty of time to defrost and reheat and they were just as delicious as we remembered. This year's lineup: beef, spicy chicken, and barbacoa. All excellent. Plus, no long wait this time, which was a nice bonus. Between the consistently great tamales, the thoughtful service, and genuinely friendly staff (even during busy holiday moments) Tamale Boy has earned its permanent spot on our Christmas table. We'll be back again next year without a doubt.

I believe we would eat every meal here. Seriously. The potato and egg, chorizo and egg are great staples for the morning. Supremas enchiladas are my go-to when I come to visit around lunchtime. I have tried the Al Pastor tortas and shrimp ranchero tortas and those are equally as delicious. A lot of locals will come in here and I have noticed a lot of workers will come in here during lunchtime to dine in together. You know its good when you see a bunch of hardworking, strong construction workers coming in for lunch. The horchata is lovely and refreshing especially on a really hot day in the Austin heat. Whenever I think about coming to Austin, the first place I think of outside of my beloved pool time is coming to this mexican cafe. Great quality food and nice staff. Thank you!

I'm glad we didn't wait in the long line and decided come back on a slower day We came in Saturday Morning, it was busy but not super crazy like Sunday First off, none of the tortillas are handmade. For the corn tortillas I feel they can use better quality tortillas Food was okay, it was nothing special. It wasn't bad but the food here isn't something I would come back for. So much hype! I can make a more authentic breakfast at home

The food: where to even start.....I hit the jackpot here. The salsa tasted like it was freshly made and served warm, so so good. The refried beans (which I don't typically order) were hands down the best I've ever had. The enchiladas were top notch, full of flavor and not overly salty. Honestly, I have nothing negative to say, it's a must try when in Bastrop!!

I've traveled all over Texas and across the U.S., and I can say without hesitation that Las Cocinas Mexican Grill is hands-down the BEST Mexican restaurant I have ever been to -- and that includes all of Austin. My family and I come here several times a week, even though we don't live close by. That alone should tell you how incredible this place is. Must-try favorites (do NOT skip these): The Margaritas - Very strong and absolutely perfect. Order them half & half (half on the rocks, half frozen). Trust me -- you'll thank me later. Nachos Al Carbon (Appetizer) - The beef fajita meat is out of this world. Tender, flavorful, and unforgettable. Beef Fajitas Cremosas (Entrée) - Get them with EXTRA sun-dried tomatoes. Oh. My. God. I have never had anything like this in my life, and it's something I crave several times a week. Stuffed Jalapeños - So good I sometimes order them as my entire meal. And the onion rings they're served on? Easily the best onion rings I've ever had anywhere. Beyond the food, the staff is absolutely amazing. From the moment you walk in, they make you feel like family -- warm, welcoming, and genuinely happy you're there. That kind of service is rare, and it's one of the many reasons this place is so special to us. And yes -- I always forget to take pictures of my food because I eat it before I remember to take photos for a review . That should tell you everything you need to know about how good it is. We are incredibly thankful for Las Cocinas. It's not just our favorite Mexican restaurant -- it's our favorite restaurant, period, and the best in the entire area by a mile. Perfect in every way.

As we walked in, we were greeted by who I assume is the owner and she let us know there was a free table next to her. Our waitress was super friendly and gave us chips and salsa shortly after being sat. The chips and salsa were excellent and I, as usual, ate too much. The salsa had a good spice and great flavor and the chips were very crunchy and crispy (like fritos but airier). I ordered a small menudo and chilaquiles with green salsa and both were really good. The menudo had a ton of flavor, good spices, and the stomach pieces were cooked perfectly; super tender and no, sometimes off putting, lingering offal smells. The chilaquiles were also great and the green salsa was mild and refreshing, with excellent side of potatos and beans. I could not finish my food as I thought the small menudo would be like a small cup not a whole bowl. I had also filled up on chips and salsa and our waitress refilled it so I had even more. All in all, this is an excellent little local spot for some bold flavors and fresh food. The menu is quite large and I'm curious to come back and have some other foods (like chicken fried steak).
