Good food, fast service, and reasonable prices. There are plenty of options to choose from, which is always a plus. They also bring complimentary chips and salsa with your meal, which was a nice touch. The staff is pleasant and efficient, and the food clearly feels fresh. Everything we ordered was very tasty, no complaints about the food at all. The only downside is the interior: it's a bit dark inside, and the furniture feels somewhat dated. We happened to hear about the nightly and lunch specials. We tried it on a Monday night and the Special Dinner was $2.00 off. That dinner was wonderful and includes an enchilada, beef taco, chalupa, guacamole, rice, and beans. I'll be returning here for certain. Herbert's Taco Hut is some of the best Mexican food I have had in ages. For starters, our server, Chris, was very welcoming and met me and my family's needs during our whole visit, which was 8 people. Also, we went to Herbert's at 6pm on a Saturday while the restaurant was very busy and they got us a table in less than 10 minutes. The portions are also huge for the price. I got a chalupa dinner for 10.99 and I had plenty of food to take home and reheat later. This was my first time eating at Herbert's and I was not disappointed, thank you!!!!!! read more

Herbert's is exactly what we were looking for on our drive between Austin and San Antonio. A small unassuming, friendly, family owned place, that served kick ass Tex Mex food. My wife and I got the $8.95 chalupa lunch special which had two overflowing chalupas, and side of rice, la charra beans, and a huge drink. Everything was on point with flavorful refried beans on the chalupas and addictive la charra beans. Kids got 3 Mexican style carne asada tacos each, which they were very happy with as well. When in San Marcos I must come eat at a local food staple Herbert's Taco Hut. Today I had the Friday special Two flour tortilla burritos or one Fried I chose the 2 flour they were filled with seasoned ground beef covered in enchilada sauce and cheese served with a side of rice and beans. The portion was great and the sauce although a little salty this time was still quite good. The refried beans were nicely mashed and not oily and the rice was flavorful and fluffy.this special also comes with a tea for your drink for the low cost of just over $8 this place is a go to Mexican restaurant and the wait is worth it as it gets quite packed. read more

You seemed like a cool guy who actually cared about his community, which I gathered from the history printed on your menu and all the photos and memorabilia posted across your restaurants.. smiling portraits of you and your wife interspersed with local ads, all memorialized beneath glass tabletops. It's a very cozy restaurant with low ceilings and low lighting, the rooms still aglow with strands of bright, multi-colored lights strung here and there. It's an ambiance you've experienced before in Tex-Mex restaurants, but Herbert's has been here since the 70s so it's vibe feels somehow extra genuine and festive. We started with chips and salsa, of course. They were placed before us as soon as we sat down. The chips are thin, salty, and served warm. The salsa is red, cold, and had a nice medium heat. We ordered breakfast tacos with carne guisada, eggs, and beans, and bean and cheese nachos. Lots of beans, thankfully they were delicious. The nachos were crunchy tostada shells, halved like half moons, and absolutely smothered in beans and cheese. The toppings actually slid off the chips very easily, so these nachos were extra messy. Couldn't complain on flavor, however. How could they not be delicious? The carne guisada was even better. The beef was super tender, tasty, well seasoned, and plenty saucy. The breakfast tacos were super messy as well but again we could not complain. Our waitress was kind and quick and running all over, this is a very busy place. The food was absolutely amazing. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and covered it with the house salsa, and it was one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. The house salsa has a nice bite to it but isn't overly spicy. The ceiling inside is very low; tall people like me have to duck a little bit, though there is a seating area in the back with a higher ceiling that I found more comfortable. New personal favorite for my Tex Mex list! This unassuming little restaurant was great! We got there at the right time, in between busy waves because we were sat immediately. When we walked out, there was a line. The service was good! The waitress was attentive and super sweet. We didn't have to wait for anything we needed. The food came out about ten minutes after we ordered. The chips were warm and thick, not the super thin ones that break under the weight of the salsa. The salsa was spicy with a nice kick and nice amount of garlic. I had the Herbert's Special Dinner and my sister had the Regular Dinner (the Herbert's without the guac). I loved it. So so so much food for the price, very tasty, flavorful food. The homemade tortillas were delicious, I could've eaten just those. I have no complaints at all about my visit. We decided to order takeout and sit outside, which was very fast. I had the chicken flour burrito dinner, and my friend got the street tacos with vegetarian substitutes. My portion was huge and good for two meals, but hers was very small. The food was fine but very heavy and made my stomach hurt. We were visiting from McKinney on a Sunday evening and dropped in around 6PM. We knew we were in for a treat when we saw locals and tourists piling in by the droves. The service we received from "Cris" was second to none. She is one of the most personable servers I've ever met in my 42 years. The restaurant was PACKED, and she treated us as if we were the only table of 8 there. The food was a true old fashioned Tex-Mex. From the guac, to the queso, to the incredible street tacos!!! We walked into a very crowded room sitting with a party if 5. I ordered a Pepsi zero for a drink while my group ordered sweet tea and waters. The waiter brought every ones drinks except mine. I ordered the cheese enchiladas with Spanish rice. After a while the food came, and yet I still didn't have my drink. I asked for my drink and then gave it to me. The enchiladas came and I took a bite. The sauce was very overbearing in taste. The cheese in the sauce felt like it was sitting out in the sun and then served to me, and the rest of the sauce tasted way to spicy to taste the actual enchilada. The rice made me choke and it was the o ly good part of the meal. We left with unpleasant thoughts. Never coming back. read more
